The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Lauren- Step back and take a breath, you have so much going on and it must be overwhelming. Most you can control but the issues your poor Mom has been suffering from are beyond your reach :sad2:. My heart hurts thinking of you trying to cope with it. :sad1:

Sheryl- I don't know much about allergy testing but I do know that Kady's Dr ran a range of blood tests for her.

Kathy- I agree with Janice, try elevating and ice to see if that helps.

Ellen- I will find the website Welby used and share it with you. WE found out that we did not use enough essential oil and that we could have added a bit of cornstarch to absorb the oil in the butter. It feels like silk but as it melts on your skin it seems to be a little oily until the skin absorbs it all. We are going to try soap next week.

Ladies, my poor Welby was fired today :headache::mad::headache::sad2: her dentist has been weird since she told him she was pregnant and today he called her in to fire her. She is totally distraught, never in her life been fired or had her employer unhappy but I guess strep and a Dr note made this guy mad. It is a small office so he was impacted but geez...........he could have laid her off.

Dinner is out of the refrigerator, Buddy is not feeling great and I am having soup.

Lauren - I am so sorry you are dealing with this. It is difficult for anyone to care for a person in your Mom's condition, then add a baby to the mix, an upcoming move, your thyroid problem. I feel so bad for you, wishing I was closer so I could help. I would call you but I know you've got your hands full so PLEASE call me if you want or need to talk, anytime. I love ya girl.

Janice - I'm beginning to think you're right about my ankle, thanks!

Nancy - I am so sorry for Welby, that's just not right!

Nancy Poor Welby that is just plain wrong. Tell her for us keep the faith something better will come along.

Lauren.

Ladies, my poor Welby was fired today :headache::mad::headache::sad2:

Dinner was chicken strips. Tried to find something at Trader Joes but nothing was appealing.

Tomorrow night's dinner will be snacks. I'm taking pepperoni, cheese and popcorn and might get a hotdog.

Hey all...

quick check in...

Mom went to my other sister's house today...she was supposed to go tomorrow but I have been having chest pains (like muscle soreness...like I got hit with a bat) since yesterday so I called my sister and she came and got her and I went to the dr. My heart rate was about 90...the dr said if I didn't have a thyroid problem she would have sent me for tests. She gave me some meds and I have been resting a bit and feeling better. Anxiety is yest another symptom of hyperthyroidism and the fact that everything going on has been causing me stress.

I had a problem with a realtor being very pushy, A's dad second guessing his move after he told Andrew, landscapers here for 3 days, My Mom, the baby and the move...just too much right now.

My sister has agreed to keep my Mom until Jane gets home from vacation...we are going to Pittsburgh this weekend so Nancy (sister) was going to take her Fri - Tues but she said the rest of the time is fine.

I am just so sad that I can't take care of my Mother. She is at the point where she does not remember anything...waking us in the middle of the night cause she cant fing the bathroom, not being able to work the TV remote and calling me every five minutes to help her change the channel or volume...having accidents...I am rambling right now...just exhausted.

Dinner will be take out pizza and I will make a salad. It is just A and I. Tom is doing last minute running around.

Keeping everyone in my prayers.

Oh, Lauren! I can just tell that you are beside yourself! Please don't stress so much! You have to take care of yourself. I wish that I lived closer so I could help out! At least take you out for some ice cream! Sending you lots of long distance hugs!:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:

Kathy - I'm so sorry about your ankle. Take it easy!

Nancy - Welby's situation is just plain crummy! That was not the correct way for her boss to handle it! Hugs to her!

Can they do blood testing for all allergies??

Like Aimee said, yes. Liam was getting a blood draw for his food allergies, so his allergist had them test for all the environmental allergies too. The results were not pretty. Fortunately, they didn't recommend keeping him in a bubble.

Aimee -- I'm so glad you got all the ADRs you wanted! We didn't like Le Cellier the last time we were there either. Hopefully, you will have a great meal this time. So many people rave about it.

Kathy -- I would just try icing your ankle and taking some ibuprofin for now, and see how it is in the morning. If it is still swollen by morning, I would call the doctor.

Lauren -- You have so much stress in your life right now, you should not for one second feel guilty for letting your sister help with your mom. You need to take care of yourself. When you feel yourself getting stressed, find some way to relax. I tend to sit and glue hundreds of sparkly crystals to Caili's skating dresses. I am very proud of this latest one.

Nancy -- I am so sorry Welby lost her job. That doesn't seem right to be fired because you and your child were sick.

I am impressed with all the different products you are making. If you go public, can I buy stock? ;)

Dinner was pan-fried flounder, avocado salsa, chipotle crema, corn on the cob and green beans. It was so good to eat all homemade food!

Wow...I missed a LOT and I should have taken notes. :scared: I hope I don't forget anyone!

Lauren - I'm sorry you're dealing with so much at one time.

Prayers for Glynis's Dad and Aimee's mom.

Kathy - how's your ankle?

Nancy - I don't know who Welby is :confused3 but that royally stinks she was fired. It sounds a little suspicious considering there was a pregnancy and a legitimate doctor's note. Can she fight it somehow?

I just want to update you all on Marisa's knee. She went to a specialist yesterday and is going to have a pretty huge surgery. It is going to leave some "pretty nasty scars" and involved bone and ligaments etc. 12 weeks on crutches at the minimum. He was concerned about her job but Marisa is working a lot from home already becasue sitting at the desk kills her and she is really zapped after therapy. I think it is the third week in November, after she takes Kady to see Miley Cyrus.

 for Marisa. I hope the surgery is well worth it in the end.

The Dr. adjusted Ron's BP meds yesterday, so please keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer this gets his BP where it needs to be. It is down to crunch time for him to pass for his med card. :headache:

 and prayers that things go well.

Chris should ask the allergist to do a blood test for the allergies, especially if there may be food allergies involved. It is far more accurate than the scratch test, and it is a lot easier on the kid. After her surgery, Alexis is probably a pro at getting blood drawn. Liam always gets tested using a blood test.

I'm not Laura and Nancy... but yes, they do blood testing for all allergies. The labwork is more effective than the skin test. I don't know an allergist around that does the skin version of allergy testing anymore.

I had no idea they could test for allergies using a blood test. When I got tested in NY a couple years ago, they scratch tested all the way up both forearms and you're not allowed to scratch. Both my arms were covered in welts and I could still see some of the spots a week later. :headache:

It is AGAIN rainy and cloudy and now very cold. I was such a woosy that last night I turned the heat on to "just take the chill off".

You had the HEAT on already?

I saw this as I was skimming last night and I really had to stop and slow down my reading at this point. I couldn't figure out what recipe we would want that you would feed to guinea pigs:lmao:

:lmao::rotfl2: I'm only laughing because I did the same thing!

Sheryl - I thought I had multi-quoted your post about Alexis and her school church service. It made me smile. :goodvibes

Lauren, I wish I could find the right words to help you thru this. Know that I understand your situation and am keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

 When one door closes, another opens.

She should file for unemployment. I don't know the specific rules for your state, but even though she was fired, (depending on the reason given on the paperwork), she should still qualify. And a small business probably won't appeal it.

Nancy - I don't know who Welby is :confused3 but that royally stinks she was fired. It sounds a little suspicious considering there was a pregnancy and a legitimate doctor's note. Can she fight it somehow?

It stinks, all right. But if this is a small business, like I suspect, it would probably more trouble than its worth.

I am impressed with all the different products you are making. If you go public, can I buy stock? ;)

Its interesting in what you find to relieve stress would probably result in me jumping off a bridge:rotfl: Gluing sparkly things to material would make me crazy!

Hmm, stock in Nancy's company. Ya know there's a shop in my area that sells gift baskets, lamp oils and knick knack stuff call Nancy's Corner. I'm sure we could come up with some clever name and help you get established...just saying:idea:

Kathy - I agree with the concensus here - rest and ice, but if the swelling persists you should get it looked at.

Sheryl - I hope this thing with Angelina works out!

Evening y'all,

I'll try to catch up here, too many bad thiings going on today.

Lauren, My heart goes out to you! Your chest pain does sound like an anxiety attack. Chris had one not too long ago & her Mom had them for years. It would be no surprise that you are having stress induced illnesses right now. Pleas try not to feel so guilty about your Mom. I've seen my sisIL & my aunt go through the guilt of caring for a parent with alzheimers. It can tear you up if you let it. There is nothing easy about this illness. I'm praying for you and your family! If it can help to talk about it please call me. Love, hugs & prayers, my friend.

Glynis, Nancy's soup is posted on this thread. Lebanese lentil soup. I'm not thrilled with my naan recipe, but I think I have one that Becky's posted that I will look for & try next time. I'll need to because the soup is a definite do over!

Nancy, I feel so bad for Welby! I know she is probably too upset right now, but this just sounds wrong. I'm guessing the guy is going to make up some other reason for firing her, but it sounds like his only reason was pregnancy & illness. If that is so, she really needs to look into fighting this. At a minimum she should get unemployment & that might be her first fight. I had to do that (many many moons ago) it was hard, but beating them, sure made things feel better.

Kathy, If it's just one ankle, you are probably overdoing it at the gym. Swelling and pain is usually a muscle sprain or a stretched irritated ligament. I'm not a doctor but my experience from having a kid who was a cross country runner. Lay off the gym & see if it improves. Angelina ended up with a ligament tear & surgery, so please take it easy.

I am upset to learn that blood testing can be done for "seasonal" allergies. Just a couple of years ago, I was getting scratch tested every year! I'm talking 3 yrs ago, things can't have changed that much that quickly. When Chris talked to the ped. allergist office they mentioned testing & she freaked out. Maybe they didn't mean scratch testing & she just assumed it, due to her childhood experience & mine. I hope so but sometimes I do feel like Nola is in the dark ages on health care! I will tell Chris asap & we are going to get this figured out. Thanks all!

Thanks all of you for the prayers & well wishes for Angelina! As I said before, it's looking good. I won't be able to say much more until it's a done deal. Just lawyers, bankers etc right now, so things are slow & extended prayers would help! :grouphug:

I'm glad you all enjoyed the Alexis-church story!:goodvibes

Anyone have a clue what could be wrong before I make a doctor appointment…I noticed a little pain in my ankle on Tuesday but nothing extreme. It’s continued and I continued my treadmill yesterday and today. I’m now noticing my ankle is swollen, any thoughts????

If you don't remember turning it wrong or something, I'd wonder if it was arthritis too... will ice help the swelling go down at all?

Mom went to my other sister's house today...she was supposed to go tomorrow but I have been having chest pains (like muscle soreness...like I got hit with a bat) since yesterday so I called my sister and she came and got her and I went to the dr. Keeping everyone in my prayers.

Lauren! You are so overwhelmed right now  I wish I was close enough to help with something. This may have already been discussed... but is your mom moving to an assisted living situation a possibility? The role of a caregiver is brutal and when they are in an advanced stage of demetia/other issues, one or two people really can't handle it all. It really takes a team of people to handle the daily grind. Or maybe she does live someplace like that already?

Many  and prayers to you, Lauren.

Yes, she should qualify for unemployment even when she was fired. I hope she rebounds quickly - is the job market near you steady? Ours is horrible :sad2:

Mom and I went shopping all day, which was fun. We picked up chinese at a local place tonight in time to watch Greys. :woohoo:

I hope so but sometimes I do feel like Nola is in the dark ages on health care!

Like I said, I got scratch tested I think 2 years ago in New York City...so it's not JUST NOLA. Granted, it was in the Bronx but the allergist was at what was supposed to be the one of the best hospitals in the Bronx. :confused3

Have a good day everybody!

Thank you Ladies, for caring about Welby. My Sis IL is employed by the St of CT Judicial Dept and did some checking. The office that Welby works in is very small and is not subject to the same "rules" larger businesses must adhere to so he was able to fire her. She has a hearing scheduled for unemployment compensation and hopefully the guy won't challenger her claim. The woman did tell her that the arbitrators were really fair so hopefully they will see that she did nothing egregiously wrong. She just happened to get sick in an office that does not tolerate absence.

He told her yesterday that she was in a "probationary" phase of her employment. A 3 month and then a 6 month phase. When she told him that she was never told about any probationary period and has never been aware that he had one he told her she was wrong. Period. He told her that once she started the ordering the price increased and he had no idea why. She told him that she placed the same order that the last assistant ordered with the same person who has handled all of their shipments. The products that arrived were name brands as opposed to generic but that the Dr did not give her the opportunity to discuss it with the sales guy and send it back yet held her accountable for his mistake. The Dr said, "I have no idea why it was higher but that was your fault." He said it was an example of her lack of concentration. She had asked him for specific examples of her mistakes and he said one time she gave him the wrong fill. She finally told him that she was sorry that he felt that way and left.

She has told me about the way he has behaved since she told him she was pregnant and from the outside looking in, it seems like he was peeved that she was expecting and decided to get rid of her.

Lauren- still thinking about you and hoping that your anxiety level decreases some. That pain from an attack is like a heart attack and is so frightening.

Dinner to be determined later today.

Good morning. I haven't read back because I've missed a whole lot. I'm so sorry I haven't been a good friend to all of you. I don't really have an excuse except to say that I've just been in a real funk and I can't seem to shake it. I am ready for vacation and I hope the packing, etc will help, but I'm just not myself.

Sorry.

Thanks for all the advice on my ankle. It's still swollen after icing but like I said it's not that painful. I don't have time to call the doctor today so I'll wait and see what happens over the weekend.

Kyle's coming in this afternoon and heading back to BR tomorrow so I've got to get in the kitchen and cook some stuff to send him back with!

Gretchen - Of course you're in a funk my friend, that's expected. Take your time trying to get back to a "normal" feeling, it doesn't happen quickly BUT vacation will help, I guarantee it!

Lauren - Thinking of you and will call you later this morning.

WFD - Going out with my guys for dinner!:yay:

Lauren, I am sorry that you are dealing with so much stress right now. You have so much going on on top of the move preparations. I am glad that you are letting others help. I am curious, is your Mom in assisted living? Make sure to take some time for yourself.

Nancy, that really stinks that Welby got fired. It's true with the small places you don't have the same protections as a larger shop. She should definitely file for unemployment though. I have sat in on some arbitration related to termination cases and it is true that in general the employer really has to have a strong case with written backup to deny the claim. It is highly likely that she'll be approved since she is pregnant and also has that doctor's note.

So last night I did end up making the pasta and meatballs. I wanted comfort food and it was good.

Dinner tonight is steak for John, wild mushroom risotto, broccoli, and summer squash.

When I got tested in NY a couple years ago, they scratch tested all the way up both forearms

Ouch. When I had it done when I was a teenager, they did it on my back. At least I couldn't see the welts and it was harder to scratch.

Its interesting in what you find to relieve stress would probably result in me jumping off a bridge:rotfl: Gluing sparkly things to material would make me crazy!
 This made me laugh. Cleaning doesn't work for me. It only makes me more stressed at how much more I have to do. Creative stuff makes me feel productive and uses up enough of my concentration that I can forget about the mountain of laundry or checkbook balance or whatever else is bothering me.

Just a couple of years ago, I was getting scratch tested every year! I'm talking 3 yrs ago, things can't have changed that much that quickly.

They haven't. The office Liam goes to still does scratch testing for environmental allergies, but not for food allergies. Because Liam has both, they just did the blood test for everything. I don't know if someone could request the blood test for environmental allergies. Like everything medical, it probably depends on the insurance company. In Alexis's case, though, Chris should be able to request the blood test because Alexis is being tested for food allergies, and the scratch test is not accurate. When I was tested, my scratch test said I was allergic to chocolate! Needless to say, I ignored that.

I don't really have an excuse except to say that I've just been in a real funk and I can't seem to shake it.

Gretchen, that is completely understandable, and I know I am just happy when you are able to pop in here. I am glad you have the vacation coming soon to look forward to.

Lauren -- I hope you are feeling a little more yourself today. Take it easy.

Kathy -- Enjoy your dinner with Kyle!

Nancy -- I hope Welby is able to get the unemployment. Somehow I missed that she was expecting again.

I'm making linguine and clams for dinner tonight.

Sorry.

No need to EVER apologize here. Sweetie, you have been through a lot so a funk is perfectly normal. Just let it happen and before you know it they will be a memory. Been where you are and it does get better in time.

Lauren ~'s my dear friend. Please don't be to hard on yourself. Mom is going to be taken care of and will be safe. You take care of you!!

Nancy ~ Oh thanks - I will be looking forward to getting the body butter recipe. LOL
That stinks about Welby. I am sure you are going to miss Nola.
I hope Buddy is ffeling better today.

Kat ~ How is the ankle today? Rest it and elevate it when you can.
ENJOY Kyle tonight. And get to cooking :rotfl:

Sheryl ~ Prayers are continuing for Angelina.

Aimee ~ I am so glad you are having so much fun with your Mom.

Bethany :wave2:

Wow the sun is shining today! Can you believe it?!! It is still very cold for September but the sun helps it to feel warmer. I am so not ready for winter.

I am so excited as Matthew is coming home tonight and bringing one of his roommates. They are working for a local farmer tomorrow and Sunday. So I will be fixing a huge dinner. They have requested Steaks - I got 1 1/2" T bones - cheesy potatoes and corn on the cob, I am also fixing a strawberry pretzel salad and an angel food cake for dessert. Think that will hold them for an hour or two? Matthew hasn't been home for 2 weeks so I am REALLY excited to see him. We talk every day but that is just not the same.

Doug & I and Stephanie & Marty are heading into Lincoln tomorrow for the game - GO BIG RED!! It should be a GREAT time! We are playing Louisiana-Lafayette anyone rooting for them?

I won't be back on until Monday, so you all play nice and have a great weekend.

When I was tested, my scratch test said I was allergic to chocolate! Needless to say, I ignored that.

Now THAT would make me jump of a bridge !!
