The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Oh Kathy, I hope the delay is only until this afternoon! Crossing my fingers!

Ellen -- 24 hours is a lot. I hope Matthew can get past this and concentrate on his studies. 4 1/2 years is a long time to be in a relationship when you are only 19.

Robin -- I did see the manatee story. I hope it finds its way home soon. They didn't have much luck rescuing the one that got lost last year. It's too bad you can't find any recreational gymnastics places near you. The place my two go does have competitive teams, then they have less competitive teams, and then they have classes.

Glynis -- How did your meeting go last night? I hope Timothy continues to feel okay today. That is ridiculous about the school not letting Leslie attend if she is coughing! I hope you can get that worked out.

Gretchen -- I'm glad your mom is able to go with you to Disney. It will be nice for all of you to get away and make some good memories.

I think that she is better where she is, the instructor she has is the pre team instructor so she is going to be able to help her.

That's great! Is it rhythmic gymnastics Kady is doing?

Ann -- I hope you feel better soon!

Aimee -- I hope you avoid that nasty bug.

Sheryl -- It sounds like Alexis is doing great! It's amazing how fast kids can bounce back.

Liam and Caili have gymnastics this afternoon -- this evening really -- so we might just have sandwiches for dinner.

Have you called the Dr? This has been a few days now and you may need an antibiotic. Take it easy today!

I haven't called a Dr yet. I didn't have a GP until recently, I just scheduled a physical appointment a couple of weeks ago with DH's GP. I have been debating calling, but I do not want to bring the kids with me around sick people and I do not want my parents to get sick either. DH has no time with his new employer either.

My fever was down this morning, but seems to be on its way up again. I just took it and it was 100. It had been around 101-102 the past couple of days.
I took an 800mg Motrin I had from the hospital when Emma was born.

My parents are dropping some homemade soup and a roasted chicken off at the door. Gotta love them.

----------
Kathy, sorry about delay. You sound like me, I tell DH all the time nothing ever comes easy for us. I still have good vibes about this one.

Den meeting went really well! We have 2 of the cutest boys ever, and they were so excited to be there. They worked really hard, and we were able to complete the requirements for a badge. It was fun!

I'm hoping that all will go well with the school. Grrr!

You're not rambling, everything you said is so very true. I absolutely can compare this loss to when I lost both of my parents, some may find this hard to believe but it is true. I had Sammie almost as long as I've had Kyle and definitely spent more time with her because she was always home. Johnny always said he'd like to come back in his next life as my dog because of how much I spoiled her.

Bob always says the same about my dogs.:rolleyes1

:goodvibes Hang in there - hopefully it will work out this afternoon.

Thanks, everyone, for your prodding to get the appointment made. I called my doctor yesterday, and her office is setting up the appointment. They will call me back when it's scheduled, and I'll go in. I'm not really nervous, as I do self-exams at least once a month, and so far, so good. However, it will be nice to have that fact confirmed.

Timothy woke up in the night burning up! His fever was about 101 and he was all stuffy and miserable. We spent a couple of hours getting the fever under control and sucking out his little nose. Poor guy. He was able to go back to sleep, and woke up fever - free but with a stuffy/runny nose. At least he's happy. I've slathered his chest with Baby Vicks, so hopefully, that will help the stuffiness.

Leslie, is another story. She has a slight cold, but nothing really to worry about. She has started her "seasonal" coughing, though, and her teacher is totally panicking! I guess I can understand this, but I sat down with her before school started, and told her about the cough, how it's not contagious, just a sign of her asthma. However, the teacher told Leslie yesterday that she is not allowed to come to school until her cough is gone. Well, that would mean I'll have to homeschool her, as she coughs all Fall and Spring! I'm beyond livid! Leslie came home in tears! I've called the school, and the principal is going to get back to me later. I'm keeping her home today, to give her nose a chance to dry up, and to let her get beyond the emotional upheaval. I may end up going to the doctor and getting an inhaler for Leslie. She really doesn't need it, but if it's going to cause problems at school, I'll get her one.

Dinner tonight will be pizza meatloaf muffins, salad and garlic bread.

Glynis, I am so glad that you made the appointment. It is a bit of discomfort for a big return. Thanks so much for doing this.
I hope Timothy feels better real soon. Could it be his teeth?
That is just wrong about Leslie. I hope you get this resolved in the right way.

Why, why, why can't anything go right for me?????????? Just got a call, there's an insurance issue now, we're delayed until this afternoon, if not it will be tomorrow....... I took off work today.......:mad:

Oh no this is just so not right. I hope when you FINALLY sign those papers that you and Johnny crack open a great bottle of wine. You so deserve it. I totally understand your sadness over Sammie. I am so crying right along with you. There is a bond with our furbabies that just can't be broken. You need to take all the time you need. I am holding you very close my friend.

Ellen -- 24 hours is a lot. I hope Matthew can get past this and concentrate on his studies. 4 1/2 years is a long time to be in a relationship when you are only 19.

Doug and I totally agree 24 hours is a lot. He is trying to get 3 years completed in 2. He is doing a double major in Ag Production Systems and Ag. business. The Business degree is the 3rd year studies. He is wanting to become an appraiser for Cattle and machinery along with banking. We are very proud of him. And if any one can handle this Matthew can. He is a very good student and very responsible. It was his choice not ours. As far as him and Ali they have been friends since middle school. We live in a very small town. One Middle school and one High School. Matthew's graduating class was only 85. So it isn't too unusual to be together since 15. They didn't start to get serious till their senior year. But even so it is very hard. We shall see where it goes. But I do agree what will be will be.

Well the sun is finally shining and it is a georgous day. Doug and I going to get our flu shots today at 2. I hate shots but I really feel they make a difference. So to the doctor we shall go.

Tonight is Church night and our date night so we will be going to the Pub for dinner. Yea!! No cooking for me.

Make it great day my friends.

Glynis, sorry to hear Timothy is sick. Poor Leslie...:headache: that darn teacher.

The kids and I got a much needed nap today. I was one happy mom.
Still feel awful, my temp spiked again this afternoon but kids seem to be doing well and Ron is staying at arms length.

Take care of yourself. I know it's hard with 2 little ones, but try.

It was very good, I'll be keeping that recipe!!!!!! If anyone is interested let me know & I'll post it.

I'd love the recipe!

Good Morning!

Wishing everyone well...quick check in. I have a couple landscapers and a realtor coming today. Have to get the retaining wall landscaped and start getting a couple appraisals. That means gotta clean up a bit. Then A has 2 friends coming over.

I'm glad things are coming together for your move. When do you think you will be moving?

Thanks, everyone, for your prodding to get the appointment made. I called my doctor yesterday, and her office is setting up the appointment. Good for you. I'm glad you made the appointment. As my OB-GYN told me last month, those new machines can detect things none of us can feel and have GREATLY improved the odds for women.

Why, why, why can't anything go right for me?????????? Just got a call, there's an insurance issue now, we're delayed until this afternoon, if not it will be tomorrow....... I took off work today.......:mad:

Kat, I'm so sorry, I'm sure you're about to explode. I hope it happens this afternoon. Otherwise, ask the attorney if you can sign your docs today. This is a normal practice (at least in SC) and the attorney can then hold your funds for you to pick up after the closing or have them wired into your account.

Tonight's dinner is ham, mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. And some kind of cake for dessert. Mom got a LOT of cake and we certainly don't want to be wasteful. :rolleyes1

hey y'all,

Kathy, I am so sorry! Gosh I pray this happens today!! :flower3:

Kat,Both Bob & I still sometimes hear Smoky or think we get a glimpse of him in the house. Angelina bought Alexis a very realistic stuff schnauzer that she keeps here. When she showed it to me, I bawled!

I don't know what's wrong with me today, woke up tired but got DH & Alexis ready & drove her to school. Came home still tired, laid back down & didn't wake up til noon! My head feels like it's in a fog! So I'm sorry to not be able to jump in on the chat.

Ann, I hope the rest helps & you get over this. Glad the Luke & Emma are well!

Glynis, I would be hopping mad at that teacher! I would take her to the dr., just to get a note saying she is not contagious. I hope both of your sweet kiddos start feeling better.

Tonight is homemade pizza.

Leslie, is another story. She has a slight cold, but nothing really to worry about. She has started her "seasonal" coughing, though, and her teacher is totally panicking! I guess I can understand this, but I sat down with her before school started, and told her about the cough, how it's not contagious, just a sign of her asthma. about Leslie's teacher. Sounds her teacher is so paranoid about swine flu that she's lost common sense. Obviously a cough does not = flu in all (most) cases. I hope a call to the principal will knock some sense into her.

Why, why, why can't anything go right for me?????????? Just got a call, there's an insurance issue now, we're delayed until this afternoon, if not it will be tomorrow....... I took off work today.......:mad:

Fingers crossed it comes through this afternoon!!

My fever was down this morning, but seems to be on its way up again. I just took it and it was 100. It had been around 101-102 the past couple of days.
I took an 800mg Motrin I had from the hospital when Emma was born.

Bless your heart  Can't be easy to care for two little ones when you're fighting something yourself.

I  this disease. I have another obstruction of some sort; I woke writhing in pain and it's now subsided a little thanks to my friend Vicodin. I was able to finally get into work (it's a Wed so I had things I needed to do) around 2pm.

I am scared to eat anything solid right now so I am not sure I'll eat dinner.

Aimee, so sorry you are under the weather yourself. I dont know how you do it being such a busy woman.

Zipuzee, glad to see you sticking around. We love to add new girls to the mix. Name please so we dont keep using screen names.:) You probably know about most of us from lurking, but ask if you need anyone intros or a WFD roster!!

Quick fly by post to let y'all know we DID CLOSE on M&D's house this afternoon and we also have Sammie back home where she belongs.:cloud9:

Asking for good thoughts for Kyle. Today is day one of walk-on try-outs and he is sick, maybe cold or flu, not sure yet. Poor kid can't catch a break.

Quick fly by...

Kat, So glad you closed!!! Keeping my fingers crossed for Kyle...hope he feels better. I am also happy that Sammie is home.

Aimee, I hope you feel better soon.

Dinner is chicken ala king (love that stuff) over rice with steamed broccoli.

All is well here. Had the landscapers here...and the realtors. All went well. We are trying to get the house listed asap. Tom is heading out for the 30th and we are hoping to move around Xmas.

I miss all of you...:grouphug:

Kathy- I'm glad she's home and it didn't take to long. I lost mine last July, and I still have my good and bad days. It's a bit easier for me because he lived with my parents- we got him when I was in high school. I still have a hard time at there house, his bowls and toys are still out. We have some good laughs about him, but I still cry too. I wish I could make it better for you. If you ever want to tell us how wonderful she was, I'd love to hear. Well now I'm just about crying, so they'll be happy tears that you finally closed!!! What a weight of your shoulders.

Lauren- Glad things went well, have you known about this for a while or is everything happening all at once? More importantly it won't get in the way of your disney plans will it?

Ann- Hope your feeling better, but what's a WFD rooster?

Glynis- Hope classes are going well, including for you. Cub scouts sounds like a lot of fun.

Gretchen- I'm glad your mom will be going with you, seeing kids at disney- you can't help but smile.

Laura- She does 4H and swimming so I don't think she really misses gymnastics, we just used it for a while to help her get over her fear of heights- and everything else.

I had a dr appointment today, and the receptionist (the sweetest lady in the world) is from Scotland and it reminded me- has anyone heard from Vickie?

Nancy's chuckwagon casserole for dinner tonight. Have a great night all.

Ann- Hope your feeling better, but what's a WFD rooster?

Whoops....I meant roster, a list of players! I am the worlds worst speller. (Which I am sure you have all noticed) Dh picks on me all the time for it on these boards. I blamed it on pregnancy for a while :rotfl: but that excuse is over. Can I blame it on sickness today???!?!?!

WFD- DM came loaded with all my dinner fixings. roasted chicken, mashed, peas, french bread, gravy and cranberry.

Congrats Kathy!!!! Can you feel the wieght lifted off those shoulders!?!?!?
Prayers for Kyle. I wish him the best.

Kathy--Yay on the closing! What a weight to be lifted off your shoulders. Glad that Sammie is back where she belongs:hug: And sending lots of luck to Kyle on his tryouts today. Crossing fingers!

Ann--I'm a terrible speller as well! Thank goodness for spell check--and sometimes that doesn't even help

Lauren--glad you got some of the relocation stuff done today. I remember that all too well and it was over 3 years ago! Sending lots of PD for a smooth transition and a quick house sale for you!

Sorry I've been absent the past couple days. DH is in Toledo on business so I've been playing single parent. Also just been down in the dump--but I think that's mostly due to the weather. We've had this weather system stuck right on top of us since the weekend. And it's supposed to be raining into the next couple of days. Just very depressing!

We've had chili and pasta with meat sauce hte past couple of days. Tonight is leftover night, b/c with DH gone we have tons of food leftover. The kids aren't excited about it, but so it goes. Happy Hump Day all!

WhooHoo!! That is the best news I have heard all day. You must be so relieved.
Prayers for Kyle on the walk on try outs. And I hope he gets to feeling better real soon.
So Glad your girl is back home where she belongs.

Quick fly by...

All the good luck I can muster for you Lauren. I hate to move - the packing is a killer. I hope it is smooth and easy for you. Heck I have lived in the same house for 25 years there is no way I would look forward to packing this house up. :rotfl2: Good luck my friend.

Amen on the closing! Time to celebrate:banana:
Poor Kyle...does he have a fever?

Ann, several days with a fever as an adult is not acceptable, you need t see a doctor! (lecture finished).

Aimee, I'm sorry your feeling so bad....please rest.

Sheryl, maybe sinuses? You could just be exhausted.

Steph, feel better? When is hubby home?

Glynis how do you read a book in a day with sick kids, a house & a husband? Please share your secret~

I'll post the recipe in a few minutes....it was so good!

BEEF BOURGUINON (from the food of France cookbook) I did make a few changes from the recipe....

3 lbs cubed chuck (I used short ribs which I will do again)
3 cups red wine (I used a bottle of white)
3 garlic gloves, crushed
bouquet garni (I used rosemary, lemon thyme & basil from the garden)
5 tablespoons butter (cut it down to 3 tablespoons)
1 large minced onion
1 sliced carrot (I used 4)
flour for coating the meat
4 strips of bacon
6 oz. small button mushrooms (used 1 box of sliced)
olive oil
s&p to taste

~Add salt & pepper to flour & coat beef, shaking off extra flour
~Heat olive oil in heavy pan or Dutch oven
~add beef to brown on all sides & remove
~add garlic, onions & chopped bacon to oil & meat drippings & cook until tender (I cooked my bacon in separate pan to cut down on fat)
~add meat back into Dutch oven, herbs, carrots & wine.
*an hour prior to serving add butter

I cooked it on very low heat in a Dutch oven for 5 hours.
If you cook bacon in the main pot you will have to skim prior to serving.
