The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

I feel like I need to warn you all! Don't make that caramel pop corn if you are thinking of dieting or dieting. I could eat the entire bowl myself. I wrapped it up so it's muffled cries won't haunt me tonight. :rotfl2:

LOL! I'll keep your popcorn quiet if you come & hide the 4 baskets of candy I just put together for tomorrow!

Laura, so glad the kids didn't go to your neighbors prior to the fever...close call. Please take care of yourself & the kids.

Bethany your a Southerner now.....sunburn in October. Were your kids allowed to dress up for school today?

Speaking of buffets I don't know if I would go to one right now with all the stuff going around......they ick me out a bit to start. Add in flu & everyone that chooses to not wash their hands post bathroom = GROSS!

Sort of...but not Halloween costumes. This was Red Ribbon week as well as Character Counts! week. Red Ribbon week is the drug awareness week, and Character Counts! is our character education program that has 6 color-coded "pillars of character". The school has an extremely strict uniform policy, but this week they could wear a shirt for the color of the day (character pillar colors) or a red shirt instead of their uniform shirt. Today was orange, so several kids had Halloween shirts on.

The kindergarten and first grade got to dress up for part of yesterday; they had their little parades and parties yesterday because of the Fall Fair (outdoor carnival games) today.

This sunburn has horrible lines too. It's like from my elbow down my arm, plus my face and ears. :headache: Oh, and an extremely distinct watch line. It's so bad I should post a picture of it on FB. :rotfl: I look like a crawfish.

Sorry...looong winded answer.

:rotfl2:

Nothing for dinner for me. Came home from the gym earlier with a stomach ache and it's just gotten worse.

Oooh, I hope that's a 12 hour bug and nothing more serious

Since I can't eat popcorn anymore (:sad1:) I can avoid this recipe (and, the 10 pounds it would bring with it) thankfully. I do have popcorn envy, though. I miss it.

One of my employees is having a rough week and I am bringing her dinner tomorrow night. They are very basic eaters, just the two of them, and I know she doesn't do mexican food. She suggested "a simple meal" because she struggles with allowing other people to help her. What would you bring someone? Since I can bring it right over in time for dinner, I was thinking about something other than a casserole (which I always do if it's for new parents, who often freeze stuff). Would you do a meat and some sides? Or soup and salad? I'm always scared people will think my food is yucky

What about a lemon roasted chicken, mashed or roasted potatoes & green beans?

Aimee I would suggest roast chicken also. you can never go wrong with mashed tatters;)

Tonight is our annual halloween dinner with my neighbors. I am in charge of appetizers. I am making chicken wings, pigs in blankets, ham rolls and a kalamata olive spread. My friends daughter requested my baked beans too. They are making pulled pork.

WOW yesterday afternoon it was 65 now its 43

Good Morning and Happy Halloween!

Trick or Treating is from 4 - 8 here so that is what we will be doing today. I have invited a few people back to the house for pizza. Nothing special...just picked up some beer and wine and cookies for dessert. I tried the Cupcake Chardonnay that people were raving about on the newest wine thread and I love it!

My wrist is still not great. I wrapped it last night. I guess it needs time.

I have to go a finish cleaning a bit and make my treat bags. We do not get any trick or treaters but these are for the kids coming over.

Kat, Hope you feel better.

Aimee, I agree with roast chicken...one of my favs!

Bethany, The do not have that on the menu anymore!

Janice, Care to share your baked bean recipe?

Sheryl, I am going to paypal you more $...I sent the wrong amount in the check. :rolleyes1

Have a great day all!

Happy Halloween all! I'm headed out in a bit for work. Looks like it's gonna be a beautiful day for trick or treating. We had fun last night at the carnival, dinner and then out with a girlfriend for a quick drink. Tonight is a trick or treating hayride with some of the Matthew's classmates and then the adult costume party afterward. Good times. I don't like to dress up either, but the couple hosting the party are really fun and costumes are required. We had a blast last year, so I'll sacrifice a little!

Maria--I would make the ADRs! Just made some for our crew in January. The ILs and some good friends (my F&W buddies and families) are joining us for marathon weekend. We have Boma, Kouzzina and Ohana right now.

Kathy--Hope your tummy upset isn't that nasty stomach bug.

Laura--sorry you had to cancel your plans b/c of sickness. Seems to be the norm instead of the exception right now. Ready for this cold/flu season to be over!

Lauren--Have a fun night tonight! I've been wanting to try the cupcake wine too. I saw an ad in the food network mag this month, and for me, if it's called cupcake I need to try it! ;)

Okay, need to go finish getting ready! Have a spooktacular day to all the boys and ghouls pirate: princess: :darth::maleficen

Happy Halloween everyone! Hope all the kiddos have fun! Still have the stomach ache but planning on grilled shrimp, rice pilaf and charred corn relish.

Here is the orginal recipe

Pinic baked beans

3 c dry navy beans
4 qts cold water divided
1 med onion chopped
1 c ketchup
1 c packed brown sugar
2 tblsp molasses
1 tblsp salt
2 tsp dry mustard
1/4 pd bacon cooked and crumbled

Rinse beans and place in dutch oven with 2qts water bring to a boil reduce heat and simmer for 3 min. remove from heat and let stand for 1 hour. Drain and rinse. Return beans to dutch oven with remaining water bring to a boil reduce heat simmer for 1 hour or until tender. Drain reserving cooking liquid. In the dutch oven or 3 qts baking dish combine beans 1 c cooking liquid, onion, ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, salt, mustard and bacon. Mix welll. cover and bake 300 degree for 2-2 1/2 hours or until beans are as thick as desired. Stir occasionally and add more reserving liquid if needed.

I skip the dry bean process and use bush's baked beans but all the rest of the ingredients. It turns out really well. My friends daughter is an expert of baked beans she gets this :thumbsup2:thumbsup2 cause that is all the hands she has :lmao:

Good Halloween Morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Haunting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Laura- I have to ask.....was there ice cream for Rocking Liam? :goodvibes Have a fun night with the kids!

Kat- how are you feeling today?

Steph- I am exhausted just reading the list of events you have coming up :faint:

Maria- 4 baskets? Do you get a lot of kids?

Aimee- I love soup for a comfort meal. If you think that they eat beef I would consider Glynis pot roast. It really is easy and flavorful and they will be able to reheat it if they do not want it the same day you bring it. I do not use a crock pot for it, I sear the meat and finish in a dutch oven, remove the meat and vegetables and then tighten up the gravy. YUM!!

Janice- Is Alex Trick or Treating this year? I know some folks don't get the older kids but I enjoy them when they come. Lately we do not get so many and I miss them.

Now about that popcorn.........................you're killing me. I keep trying to back away... baaack away....baaaaaak awaaaaaayyyyyy. popcorn:: mission a failure!

Bethany- I like the way your school motivates the kids to build character. The little ones must have been cute though!

Lauren- We liked R&C a lot last year. It was one of our favorite meals on that trip. I have that same heebie jeebie thing with buffets as Maria does with the flu season starting so early. I usually am okay with them, but there is a lot going around adn I often wonder how many people follow through with their dining plans even when there is a sick one with them. Last year there was a family in the Yachtsman with a really sick child. I mean she was not able to even hold her head up. As a Mother, I was appalled that they did not either cancel their meal plans or have someone stay behind so that the poor thing could lie down. She tried to eat soup and ended up sort of lounging on a chair and her Mom and dozing :sad2: Now as a customer I was irritated. This was less than a week before Christmas and while I do not kid myself that we are all exposed to germs more in a crowded place like Disney but jeez Louise!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was still peeved that this family cared more about their own personal vacation then they did about keeping a sick kid away for other people.

And to continue the vent...............Marisa told me that Pneumonia girl is at it again! Her little girl was running a fever so she dosed her up with Tylenol and sent her to school. The school asked that kids be fever free for 24 hours without medication before sending them. This woman can work from home and was that day. She did not want to be distracted, is what she told Marisa. :headache: Common courtesy notwithstanding, how do you send a sick kid to school when you could keep her home and let her rest adn not germ up the rest of the kids?

Off soapbox and back to WFD..................

Ann- Please try to enjoy Emma's special day. I know that you have a lot with your family but you know that they all want you to be joyous for your daughter :grouphug:

Glynis- between you and Ellen, the bad weather is starting way too early!

Speaking of horrible weather- La got slammed yesterday!

I got interrupted, lost my train of thought and now I have to run. BBL and thinking about all of you!

Eeeewww. I am not a fan of freezing rain. I don't like the way it feels when it hits you in the face. :headache:

We had a lot of Campbell's bean and bacon soup growing up. We always paired tomato soup with grilled cheese though. I put some Worchestershire Sauce in my tomato soup.

I always put Worcestershire sauce in my bean and bacon soup! Reminds me of my mom's hamhock and lima bean soup. I sure wish she'd written that recipe down! Oh well, at least Campbell's is a fast alternative!

No rain here right now. The sun is trying to pierce through the clouds. It will be cold, tonight, though!

I feel like I need to warn you all! Don't make that caramel pop corn if you are thinking of dieting or dieting. I could eat the entire bowl myself. I wrapped it up so it's muffled cries won't haunt me tonight. :rotfl2:

No kidding!!! It is THAT good! I'm making more today, along with the chocolate kind. Alan and I will snuggle with it after the kids are in bed. Can't wait!

Morning all! Happy Halloween!!!

For breakfast this morning, Alan made the kids, Monster Brains, aka cracked wheat cereal.

For lunch I'm making "Worm Sandwiches", and for dinner tonight we'll have pizza mummies.

The kids will go trick or treating around 5:30 and hopefully finish up around 8:00. Of course, if it's really cold, they'll come home earlier. We live on a circle with lots of families, so we get lots of people coming to our door. I always hope I have enough candy, and luckily I've never run out before. I hope this year is no different.

I woke up with a splitting headache this morning. I think I hit the books a bit hard last night. I've finished the medical terminology class with a 97%, and need to finish up the anatomy. I read and studied for hours last night, and I think I overdid it. Hopefully, the Advil I just took will kick in soon and I'll start to feel good enough to get my house in order.

Glynis - We never did holidays and special occasions as fun as your family! I hope I am the kind of parent that goes the extra mile like you. (not a stab at my momma - she was just a different kind of mom!).

:woohoo: on your grade!!!

Thanks for the dinner ideas! I am actually making a pork in the crockpot thing today and DH bought me a 4.5 pound pork loin, and I only need 3 pounds, so I am going to use the extra 1.5 pounds for them and then do potatos and green beans as the sides. I'll figure out something easy for the pork.

Dinner is a pork noodle dish from the latest Food Network magazine. My dad is coming over today, they are going clay shooting and then watching the UT game tonight. I thawed some cheeses I had on hand and will put together a few snacky things to munch on. The weather is gorgeous and I have no real plans other than work stuff. Boo!

Help, help, help!!! I need the recipe for Kat's Cajun Pork Tenderloin with Garlic Butter. I've lost my recipe, and I'm craving it for tomorrow!!! Can someone repost it for me???

Thanks!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome home..You all are the best!!

Sounds like everyone has some great fun Halloween plans!! We aren't doing much. Ross had a school dance last Friday and a party last Saturday. He had a Halloween class on Wed at the dojo and then this morning he had the Halloween class for the "little dragons and tigers" he teaches.
He will sit outside dressed up to pass out candy and then when my bf gets here with her 6 year old daughter (and maybe her niece) Ross will take them around our neighborhood to TOT. They live out in the boondocks so our little neighborhood is perfect for them.

I probably won't be leaving my couch as I am getting my behind kicked with this sinus infection and bronchitis. Ugh!!

Kat--I hope your stomach feels better in time for your yummy sounding supper!

Glynis- As always you have such a nice time planned!

Thanks for asking about Ross, he is doing awesome, still busy as ever with sports and school activities. He just finished his 1st year of 7th grade football, he was starting center and defensive end and the team went 7-0. They are just a great group of boys, and really know how to play as a team, they have been playing together (the majority of them) since 1st grade. The whole class of 2015 is actually really close and all get along well, (including the parents which I think is half the battle).

Lauren--Sounds like you have a busy evening ahead of you..fun but busy! Take it easy on that wrist of yours!! When I had all my wrist trouble a few years back it turned out I had a torn TFC and a build up of scar tissue. If you don't find any relief from the naproxen and a splint then you need to see your Dr. (after vaca of course, lol)

Janice--Thanks for the warning on the popcorn, lol. I would be the only one eating it, Ross can't have it cause of his braces and Kris only likes buttered popcorn, so it would not be good for the waistline, lol, especially where I can't get back to the gym for another week!!

Bethany--We don't have a very strict dress code here, but the kids weren't allowed to wear costumes to school either, we had something similar though called spirit week and each day was a different theme. The first day was school color day, backwards day, superhero day, ski bum/snow bunny day, and it ended with pj day. The kids had a blast with it.

I know I missed a bunch, I mean well honest, trying to get back into the swing of things, and I'm a bit loopy with the meds I'm on right now as well, lol.

I hope you all have a fun filled day!! Again, thanks for the warm welcome home!!! xoxo

Here ya go:

Cajun Pork Tenderloin with Garlic Butter

Dry rub:
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
2 tsp. rubbed sage
4 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. ground black pepper
1 tsp. garlic powder

2 pork tenderloins
2 Tbs. butter, softened
1/2 tsp. garlic powder

In a small bowl combine the salt, cayenne pepper, sage, paprika, black pepper and 1 tsp. garlic powder. Rub this mixture on the pork tenderloins. Grill over med-high heat, turning each tenderloin a quarter turn every 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

Mix butter with 1/2 tsp. garlic powder. Slice each tenderloin on the bias and serve with garlic butter brushed on top.

Happy Halloween Y'all!

We'll be heading over to BIL & SIL house later. Their neighborhood goes all out, lots of lights, decorating, mini-haunted houses it's always fun. We'll be having hot dogs & chili, my veggie chili, taco dip, spider cupcakes (DD) & lots of other treats. I'm bringing the margarita fixings & DD request for red wine instead of sangria. (She's hypoglycemic so she can't indulge in sweets & high sugar cocktails.) I bought Pumpkin Mickey glow in the dark Trick or Treat bags for the kids & Mickey lollipops in DW!

Okay I think y'all have said enough to convince me to cancel the buffet at Chef Mickey's!!

Bethany, Sorry about the sunburn! So you think Kat & I are strange for getting together in DW & not as much at home? Hopefully since our guys got along so well, we can remedy that! But I don't hear Kathy jumping in to join us for buffet & character dining at Mardi Gras! Somehow I just can't picture Johnny at Chef Mickey's!! :upsidedow

Kathy, I hope your stomach is feeling better for your yummy dinner!

Lauren, Sent the wrong amount? If it's just a few dollars don't worry about it.

Janice, I'm so sorry!! I forgot about mailing your recipe book! I came across it a little while ago when I was getting the stuff out for the kids. Monday I promise!!

Glynis, You sure accomplish so much! You amaze me! What's a pizza mummy?

Wendie, I'm glad to hear that Ross is doing so well!:goodvibes

I hope everyone has a wonderful & fun time this evening! Take pics of the cute kiddies in their costumes for us!
