The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Have a great trip, Lauren! I'm so glad you are getting away!!!

It's a gorgeous morning, here. The sun is shining, and it is pretty warm! Nice. Looks like Fall wanted another turn!

Dinner tonight will be Kat's Cajun pork roast with garlic butter, roasted new potatoes, and acorn squash. No dessert tonight, since my little ghouls came home with enough candy to last until next Halloween!

Have a great day, everyone!

Afternoon all--

Sounds like everyone had a nice Halloween!! We didn't have that many kids at all this year, but enough so that we emptied out almost all the candy in the bucket!!
My bf didn't show with her daughter, Ross text her to find out where she was and she told him that they were at her dd school, and dd didn't want to leave. Grrr Ross past on going with some friends earlier to take her dd. Thank goodness his friends came back around and he took off with them for a bit. This isn't the first time she has done something like this, and in all reality she and our friendship are on thin ice with me. Kris can't figure out why I stay friends with her, and in all honesty I'm not really sure either, lol. I know that part of it is that she is just so darn good to my dgm who is 95 in a nursing home and I am the only family she has, Grammy K just loves visiting with her. My bf goes with me 1x a week and curls and sets her hair and paints her nails for her. I can say that I have started to distant myself, it is just so hard (plus she also is my hairstylist, lol).

Lauren--Have a wonderful trip!! Can't wait to see pics!!

Nancy--I just love the pics on FB! How fun, what a great job they did with the party!

Sheryl--What did Alexis go as? You might have said and I missed it, sorry.

Nothing to exciting going on here, some of you might have seen my post on FB. Kris and Ross have gone up North to take docks out and I am home alone for the day. I am resting on the couch,(in hopes I feel good enough to get some much needed errands done tomorrow), I'm dissing, reading a pile of magazines and working on our Dec vacation plans. (plus trying to get a few minor things done around the house) It is nice to have the house to myself on a Sunday, but I do miss my boys, lol.

WFD--I will have a sandwich of some sort or soup, the boys will eat in their travels.
Happy Sunday all!!

My wrist is still not great. I wrapped it last night. I guess it needs time.

Bethany, The do not have that on the menu anymore!

I hope your wrist feels better! If it is CTS, wrapping it each night while you sleep should help some.

They don't?!? I know it was 4 years ago that I was there, but that seems like an easy menu item to have. :confused3 I was looking to plan a trip and the guidebook I have is from 2006. Maybe it's time to get a new one! :rolleyes1

Bethany- I like the way your school motivates the kids to build character. The little ones must have been cute though!

And to continue the vent...............Marisa told me that Pneumonia girl is at it again! Her little girl was running a fever so she dosed her up with Tylenol and sent her to school. The school asked that kids be fever free for 24 hours without medication before sending them. This woman can work from home and was that day. She did not want to be distracted, is what she told Marisa. :headache: Common courtesy notwithstanding, how do you send a sick kid to school when you could keep her home and let her rest adn not germ up the rest of the kids?

They do so much for the kids at this school. There is the character program plus the "positive behavior support" program. They can earn dog tags from the character program and individual and class rewards through the behavior (conduct) program. They're forever getting stuff.

I can't believe that mother would send her DD to school sick like that. :sad2: She's probably the first mother to complain if the teacher is out sick too much and her precious DD has to deal with substitute teachers.

For breakfast this morning, Alan made the kids, Monster Brains, aka cracked wheat cereal.

For lunch I'm making "Worm Sandwiches", and for dinner tonight we'll have pizza mummies.

I woke up with a splitting headache this morning. I think I hit the books a bit hard last night. I've finished the medical terminology class with a 97%, and need to finish up the anatomy. I read and studied for hours last night, and I think I overdid it. Hopefully, the Advil I just took will kick in soon and I'll start to feel good enough to get my house in order.

That is quite the menu!

How is your head? And that grade rocks!! :cheer2:

Okay I think y'all have said enough to convince me to cancel the buffet at Chef Mickey's!!

Bethany, Sorry about the sunburn! So you think Kat & I are strange for getting together in DW & not as much at home? Hopefully since our guys got along so well, we can remedy that! But I don't hear Kathy jumping in to join us for buffet & character dining at Mardi Gras! Somehow I just can't picture Johnny at Chef Mickey's!! :upsidedow

The best part about Chef Mickey's is the character interaction. You can kill two birds with one stone. The food is mediocre and it's a very noisy place to eat.

Yes, it's slightly amusing. ;) What is even more odd is that while I've seen both of you since moving here, I haven't actually seen both of you at the same time. :confused3

Just popping in to say Happy Halloween everyone! The kids had a great time trick or treating. It was unusually warm here with a very good breeze and an almost full moon. It was kind of spooky.

I saw that full moon! The strange thing for me yesterday was that Halloween smelled the same here as growing up. :confused3 I don't know how to describe it. The air smelled the same and it was not as cold here as Halloween growing up and the environment is totally different.

We had mostly really little kids yesterday. They were so cute. Not too many people came by, darn I have leftovers. ;) Maybe because I wasn't giving out chocolate. I had mini granola bars, pretzels, goldfish crackers, mini oreos and the very famous pixie sticks.

The dogs are still on old time and woke me early. Not sure yet WFD. I be back after more coffee.

I didn't have any trick or treaters. Granted, I didn't have my light on but if I had seen (or heard from Anabelle) people walking around, I would have turned it on. Only one person walked by and Anabelle went nuts, then got quiet really quickly when the person (teenage) turned and looked at her with this crazy mask on. :lmao:

Anabelle woke me up at the usual time today too. (5:30....so now 4:30) but I stayed up and I am getting some stuff done. :thumbsup2

Wendie - What does "take docks out" mean:confused3?

We own one business, two separate parts, one is new home construction/remodeling and the other part is camp care.

Part of the camp care with our 150+/- customers is putting their dock in the lake in the spring, and taking it out in the fall. They go in as soon as ice is out, and are removed when the customers call or before they freeze in. Granted the longer they wait to take them out the colder the water is and the more Kris charges;), lol. Last year we had one customer that called the 1st weekend in Dec and Kris had to cut his way to the swim raft with a chain saw and a 2x4, lol...that customer helped put a new roof on our house this summer, :lmao:

DEP in the State of Maine does not allow docks to stay in all year. Some lakes have certain dates they have to be out by, etc.

Hope this explains it, lol. (probably a bit to much)

Wendie I am glad you are back to posting. I missed you over here.

Alex and I raked and mulched over 10 bags of leafs. There is still more to do but he and I couldn't pick up one more leaf. Right now I am finishing the laundry. I am afraid to lay down thinking I will never unbend again. :rotfl2:

We are having spaghetti w/ meatballs with garlic bread for dinner.

Our potluck dinner last night was really good. It is always fun to get together with friends.

I have alot of things to do today before our trip so not sure if I will be on later. have a great week and if you need me, call.

Love to all!

Have fun!!!!

My bf didn't show with her daughter, Ross text her to find out where she was and she told him that they were at her dd school, and dd didn't want to leave. Grrr Ross past on going with some friends earlier to take her dd. Thank goodness his friends came back around and he took off with them for a bit. Argh, I've had friendships like that. I would distance myself, too. Put the ball in her court.

We only had a handful of trick or treaters :confused3 though DH is stoked about the amt of candy left! It's all the sugary candy he likes - spree, smarties, nerds, etc. I bought that kind so I wouldn't be tempted

I started to have second thoughts about my Christmas Eve at Coral Reef decision. Last time we went, we were seated 45 minutes after our reservation time and judging from a thread on the Restaurant board, that's typical of them. I really don't want to miss IllumiNations on Christmas Eve but due to my mom's work schedule, we can't have a reservation until after 730 (IllumiNations at 930). So, last night I decided to try for Tutto Italia, which is booked but a lot of other places came up including Akershus. DH decided their menu sounded better than Coral Reef, and we have only done breakfast there. Plus the princess is an added plus.

Anyone have thoughts on dinner there?

I am planning on baked italian pastina with sausage tonight, though I had lunch at like 230 and may not be hungry anytime soon.

Wendie -- I hope you enjoyed your relaxing day.

Lauren -- Have a great trip!

Nancy -- Your story about the sick child in the restaurant in Disney reminded me of one of our trips, although Liam was the child and I was the bad parent. Liam had strep the week before our trip. He finished the antibiotic while we were there. The next night, we had booked the Fantasmic package at the Brown Derby. Liam had been fine all day. We got to the restaurant, the chef came over to talk to Liam about his allergies, we ordered, and the next thing we knew, Liam was asleep! I felt him and knew he had a fever. My first instinct was to leave, but there was no way any of us was going to be able to carry him out of the restaurant and all the way out of MGM as dead weight. Plus, we had already ordered our food and the only reason we were eating there was because Liam begged us to book it. So we stayed. (We did skip Fantasmic.) Liam woke up when his food arrived, and he was able to make it out of the park on his own, but he had strep again. We got another antibiotic the next morning, and Liam was fine for the rest of the trip.

Now, I do not drug my kids up and send them to school, although I know a lot of people who do.

Bethany -- It sounds like you are in a great school.

Glynis -- I'm glad your kids had a good weekend. You always make holidays so fun. Congratulations on the great test score!!

I lost all my multiquotes when I posted yesterday, so I hope everyone had a good weekend. Becky and I took Caili skating this morning and then we had seafood fra diavlo for dinner. Yum!

Anyone have thoughts on dinner there?

We did dinner there a couple years ago, and I would not go back. Becky and I thought the food was very bland, and my salmon was overcooked. The best part of the meal was the appetizer bar, which had some different cheeses and other things I had never heard of or tried before. The princess interaction was pretty good. Liam especially liked Jasmine, who complimented him on all the creative drawing he had done. However, I don't remember the kids eating anything, except for bread and dessert.

Wendie – I’m so glad you’re back with us, I missed you! I hope you’re feeling better and were able to relax today.

Aimee – I’ve never been to Akershus, can’t help. I’m still unable to use the online dining site, not sure what the problem is, but it’s making me mad!:headache:

Laura – Seafood fra diavlo…YUMMO!:thumbsup2

Where did the weekend go?
Hope everyone had fun yesterday.

Ann, thinking of you today. I hope it was wonderful for all.
Lauren, have a great time!!!!

Dinner last nigt was mussels fra diavlo & I sauteed some broccoli rabe in garlic & olive oil.
Tonight dinner was a boneless chicken that I marinaded in pineapple & orange & roasted white turnips, carrots & elephant garlic.
I made a small gingerbread cake for dessert, tomorrow is DMs birthday but she is working:guilty:
For the cheese lovers out there I bought a white English stilton with cranberries from TJs & it is delicious, we had it after dinner with dried apricots, figs & sour cherries.

Earlier today I took Anabelle for a walk. I had to put her in the back of somebody's pick up truck because somebody's pit bull got out of the house and was running around loose. Two other people were sitting on top of cars trying to get away from this thing. He was not vicious, but he was jumping all over me trying to get to Anabelle. I was kneeing him to knock him down every time he jumped up on me and I was yelling at him. I picked up Anabelle and she was scared so she was climbing all over me and scratched my face in the process. I look a hot mess. Sunburned with a farmers tan and a scratch now too.

I was miffed though because it was a little embarrassing to have these people watching me get jumped on by this crazy dog. At least they gave me the idea to put my dog in the pick up but it took me a bit to get her in there. Once I got her in there, the other dog stopped jumping on me and just sat and looked at me. That was the same time the a/c unit next to us kicked off and all of a sudden - silence. It was like time stopped. I just looked around at these two people sitting on the cars, my dog sitting in some stranger's pick up, and this pit bull staring up at me. At least the owner came out at that point and got the dog.

I was also miffed because I was trying to see how long it took me to walk a mile and I was like 3/4 of the way through it at the time.

Are those the kind of docks that you have to swim out to, the ones that are not attached to the shore? They are meant to be jumped off of? :confused3

Bethany -- It sounds like you are in a great school.

Yes! :goodvibes It really is a good school. The majority of kids are so polite, too. They say "Yes, ma'am" when you tell them to do something - and then they do it! :faint:

I used to get strep a lot as a kid. I remember having it on more than one family trip. (Not at WDW though) :headache: My brother, on the other hand, got sick with something (ear infection? croup? I dunno) on our first WDW trip. The Yacht Club provided a humidifier for the room (yes, in Florida ) and I think they got him and my mom transportation to and from a clinic. He got a little stuffed Mickey Mouse that I think he still has to this day.

I gave the majority of my 3rd grade class chicken pox. I somehow got exposed to it over Christmas Break but didn't know it. I went to school the first day back from break, only to find itchy spots that evening. :rolleyes1 That one day was just enough time to expose the rest of the class to the germs. :rotfl:

Where did the weekend go?

I was just wondering that myself. It is getting dark SO EARLY NOW!! :sad2:

Janice - Clean out your PM's, THANKS, it worked.:cool1: I disabled the pop-up blocker and I'm good to go!!!!!

Dinner tonight was really good. turkey cutlets with a mushroom scampi. So good! So rich and so not WW! I had Nola tonight and she loved it. Her Mom and Dad wet out to dinner so Buddy and I got to enjoy her for a few hours.

Bethany- that must have been terrifying for you!

Lauren- Have fun and safe travels!

Laura- this was not a child who got sick while at dinner, this was an obviously sick kid who was dragged to sinner. WE took Kady out for supper one night, ordered and by the time the meal came we needed to have it wrapped, she failed that fast.

Kat- I have been able to book online this week but I really prefer to call.

Janice- we have not even really started raking. The man next door is out every day...every day! and I bet he is cursing us about now :guilty:

See you all tomorrow!

Bethany--Nope in Maine docks are what you can walk out on from land, sit on, tie boats up to etc. Some people have just 3-4 4'x10' sections and one customer has 28 sections.
What you swim out to and jump off are swim rafts. He hauls a bunch of those in as well.

I thought docks had to be attached to the shore but I wasn't sure when you said he had to go out to get them. 28 sections?!? I don't understand why they can't stay year round. I've never heard of that. Seems like a LOT of work!

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, docks are near shore, and rafts are out in the water.
Some people have sections making a T some a U shape some have to go quite a few sections(feet) out to get to deep water. It all depends on the lake and how much money they want to spend. There is wheel in, floating and standing docks. (I won't get into boat and jet ski lifts, lol)
The customer with 28 sections put 14 sections together to make a 24'x24' on water patio, the other 14 sections are for his boat dock along with 2 lifts, lol. This is a link to photos of Shoremaster Docks and if you click on customer photos all the ones from Maine are our customers. This might make it easier to picture.
http://www.shoremaster.com/dockbuilder/photogallery.html

The main reason they have to come out is because the lakes all freeze around here, and when the ice goes out it will take the docks with them, and mangle them. Kris does Shoremaster Docks and they are all aluminum and very easy to remove(don't let the customers know that;)). He averages around 100.00 an hour. Most of our customers are in a 30 mile radius, we just have a handful that are further away.

I hope I haven't confused you more, lol. I'm sure you are wishing you never asked me anything now huh?!!? lol:);)

Did you get it fixed? Mine is working - though I haven't been able to pull up my existing reservations (says it's not found?).

Don't be embarassed! The owners of the loose dog should be. I had to find owners for two wandering dogs on my street two days ago. Pitties are typically eager for a good ear rub if they can get you to do it - he sounded like a hyper pup! When Winston has escaped out the front door, he thinks that everyone in the neighborhood are anxious to play with him  Of course lots of people are scared of dogs, esp bigger ones, but dogs don't realize that  Glad you were able to put Anabelle someplace safe so she didn't get trampled.

Morning, everyone! Looks like it's going to be a beautiful day! I'm so happy that the sun is back!!!!!

Dinner tonight is undecided, right now. I've got to see what's in the freezer and pantry before I make a decision. Can't do that until I get the kids off to school.

Dad called last night, and confirmed that he's coming to my house for Thanksgiving!!!! We are all so excited! I'm doubly excited because it means that Alan will finally finish some of the "honey do" projects around the house!!!

Wel, I'm off to get the kids ready for school. BBL with dinner plans.

Aimee - Thanks to Janice, I'm back online with the ADR's! Make sure you're putting in the correct phone # when trying to retrieve them. I had the same problem a few months back.

Glynis - So happy Dad is coming for Thanksgiving!

WFD - White beans & rice with grilled chicken sausages and a salad.
