The WDW Vets Head West! A DL May 2012 TR - Complete!

You were at DL just couple of weeks before we were at DL with our kids! (and our DD is about the same age as your DS. )

I had been looking at WDW TR because after our very first Disney trip ever, I am now thinking about another one! :cool1: I was interested in your last WDW trip because it mentioned it was with a small child. I really enjoyed that TR and found this one from there. It is really neat to read because it makes it easier for me to see the similarities and differences between WDW and DL, because I have something to compare.

Even though we stayed out past bedtime every night we were there, we still only made it to the fireworks - we skipped Fantasmic and WoC. If we had just had our 20 month old, we might have tried, but an overtired, cranky 7 year old is harder to deal with! Our 5 year old did manage to fall asleep in the stroller, which I was pretty impressed with.

My DD LOVED the characters - probably more like your DS did on his trip to WDW. It was great, but she did not understand about waiting turns or giving others a turn. She would be SO excited to see them and then cry when it was time to leave. We ended up actually avoiding characters a few times when the lines were longer or we were getting tired because we didn't want to deal with her disappointment when it was time to go!

I am looking forward to reading the rest of your TR!

I went on Mr. Toad on my first ever trip to WDW and I remember a train coming toward me. That's all I recall about that ride.

Loving your TR!

I am one of those rabid Mr. Toad fans, and what I loved about the ride was that you either went to the Mad Judge (who sent you to jail) or you got hit by a train (and went to hell), now these are not particularly child-friendly themes, but that is exactly why my brothers and I loved it so much. To us it was thrilling and we used to have so much fun riding it together. Maybe you needed my brothers and I along for the ride to truly appreciate it! :rotfl:

You guys got some fun rides in that morning! It was neat to see the pictures of the Storybook canal boats, and I think the outside boats at Small World are really cool. I hope to get back to DL someday soon to try out their Space Mountain. I love the one in WDW, so I'm sure I'll extra love DL's!

Still here enjoying your TR. I must say I do not remember ever going on MR.Toad's wild ride in MK but i remember this old disney world commercial with this little boy telling his like 9 month old baby brother not to eat anything before going on the ride. Not really important but crazy that i remember it

Looks like a great morning. I can't believe PP was already a 20 minute wait after you made the first ride of the day on Dumbo.

I remember Mr. Toad from when I was growing up. I really didn't know the story or movie myself either, but it certainly was a "wild ride" and I always enjoyed it. I think part of the reason I liked it was that I could sit in the front of the car and "drive." :rotfl:

The storybook canal thing looks cool too. WDW needs it. :thumbsup2

I loved Roger Rabbit too. He's another one that I wish had some more representation in the east coast park. :lmao:

Great updates!! LOL on Mr Toads. I think it's just neat bc of how it's so original to the park, WDW doesn't have it, and YES it is freaky. I generally ride it once to get it out of my system. What did Paxton think? Oh and FYi - movie is really weird too. I haven't watched it a 2nd time, though I might whenever we head back to DL.

I love those storyland boats!! They are very nostalgic for me. :goodvibes

Toontown looks like it was fun. I absolutely love the pics of Paxton in Goofy's house!! Such a cutie pie!

I just showed the videos to Stitch and she thought Paxton was sooooo cute!! And he is, love that little laugh when he spins on the tea cups!!!

Congrats on getting rid of the pacifier. I think you are right about the timing and giving him a chance to get used to it before the next vacation.

Aww, thank you!! He definitely has an infectious little giggle! It was a lot of fun this trip to see him more interactive on the attractions than he was just a few months ago.

Getting rid of the pacifier luckily wasn't as rough as I had thought it would be! That first night was torture but we gave him his stuffed Donald Duck the next night, and it was all good from there. DH asked me, "Won't we have this problem again when it's time to get rid of Donald?" and my response was I don't care if he takes Donald with him to college, at least it won't ruin his teeth! :lmao: At least we have 2 of them, so we have been rotating them out to get the same "wear & tear" on them both.

I'm glad my TR was helpful! Traveling with a little one was such a big adjustment for us after traveling to Disney World so many times as adults. It totally changes how you tour the parks! Too bad you missed out on WOC. I guess that is just incentive to plan another DL trip! I was bummed we missed out on seeing the fireworks since they were only showing on weekends. How were they? We kept Paxton out pretty late almost every night too, but luckily except for that first attempt at WOC he was pretty good. Normally he goes to bed at 8 at home, and it was more like 10 before he got to bed every night!

Awww, your DD with the characters sounds precious! Well, except for the crying to leave them part, I bet that was rough! Paxton did that a couple of times in WDW, especially with Pirate Goofy! He was wriggling all over trying to get down while we were waiting in line, and he started fussing when we left, but forgot about it quickly. I was a little bummed he wasn't as excited about them this trip, but I was just relieved he wasn't scared. And at least we had one trip to remember where he absolutely loved them!

Thanks for joining in! Whenever you do start planning that WDW trip, consider doing a PTR...I'd love to read along! :thumbsup2

I went on Mr. Toad on my first ever trip to WDW and I remember a train coming toward me. That's all I recall about that ride.

Loving your TR!

It was so bizarre! I do think I remember seeing the train too, but honestly the whole ride is kind of a blur. lol

I am one of those rabid Mr. Toad fans, and what I loved about the ride was that you either went to the Mad Judge (who sent you to jail) or you got hit by a train (and went to hell), now these are not particularly child-friendly themes, but that is exactly why my brothers and I loved it so much. :rotfl: Maybe that's what was missing!! I didn't realize there were 2 ways you could go...I do remember seeing a judge, but I thought I saw a train too? Maybe DH took some pictures that I just didn't include because they were too dark. I'll have to go back and look now.

Oh yes, DL's Space Mountain is incredible!! I didn't know whether or not to believe the hype about how much better it is, but it's definitely true! I loved their Small World, and it was neat how it started and ended outside, so you really felt like you were entering a different little world and coming out of it at the end. Very cute!

Still here enjoying your TR. :lmao: I don't remember that commercial, but funny that is what you attribute with the ride. Lol Maybe if I had ridden it as a child I would have been more excited to ride it again as an adult?

I loved Roger Rabbit too. He's another one that I wish had some more representation in the east coast park. :lmao:

I was astounded by the Peter Pan wait too!! That was crazy. We probably would have been better off going to PP first before hitting Dumbo!

I agree with Roger Rabbit! He definitely should have some presence in WDW. :thumbsup2

Toontown looks like it was fun. I absolutely love the pics of Paxton in Goofy's house!! Such a cutie pie!

Paxton was a pretty indifferent to Mr. Toad's although he was looking around more since the front of the car was lower and he could actually see. We found that problem on a lot of the dark rides where we sat in the front row...the front of the ride vehicle obstructed Paxton's view so he could only see out of the sides.

Toontown was SO great at DL! I liked it in WDW when they had it, but definitely better all around in DL. He had a blast in Goofy's Playhouse, that was probably one of my favorite moments of the trip just watching him run around and have fun.

I love Toad. I grew up with DL, and never got to ride the WDW version. I've always thought SpM was better at DL, but even MORE so after the DL refurb. So smooth and the onboard music is awesome. Though, I still haven't ridden Space at WDW since the refurb (but I know DL is still better. teehee).

How are you adding videos to your TR? It's it the same as adding a link or pic?

Can't wait to see your thoughts about World of Color. Wish those Glow with the Show ears were out when you were there. Those look amazing!

I forgot to mention the onboard music! That definitely improved the ride/experience as well as the smoother ride. Since the refurb at WDW it doesn't seem to rattle you around quite as much as before, but it's definitely nowhere near as smooth as the DL version.

For the videos, I uploaded them to my Photobucket account and used the IMG code. Just copied & pasted into the post and it will post the "thumbnail" picture of the video that creates a link to the Photobucket.

Those ears look pretty cool!

Sounds like a good start to the day. I would be doing Dumbo then Peter Pan as well, but Hydroguy (one of the big FAQ guys on the site for DL) said that you should do PP first, THEN dumbo, because the PP line builds faster and it is such a short ride. Will let you know how that worked out.

Mr. Toad at WDW is one of those things that was not that great really - but anything that's gone is remembered fondly. My first trip with DW in 1997 we were able to ride it before it was closed down. Most notable for the WDW version having two separate independent tracks that didn't all share the same scenes. (Two sides were slightly different.) Also notable as being one of three rides in Fantasyland that you could see bare breasted women. (Actually in all 3 cases it was bare breasted mermaids.)

Toon-town looks pretty awesome. Even though DD is 9 - she's still gonna want to look at that stuff. I'm glad we're going one time before she starts to "leave childish things behind".

Personally love Roger Rabbit, and can't wait for this ride. DD I am sure doesn't know who Roger is, but debating that it might still be too young for her. Though funnily enough she will recognize many of the characters when we watch it someday, as she watches both old looney tunes as well as Disney shows. Wondering if the Jessica Rabbit stuff is a little too raunchy for her yet.

Keep those updates coming - I need all the tips before we go on July 21st!

I kept meaning to read that Hydroguy thread, but I just never got around to it. Looks like I missed a good tip! It was all good though. Longer than I would have liked to wait for Peter Pan that early in the morning, but not a day-ruiner. Hopefully doing the reverse works out well for you!

Interesting about the two tracks! I guess it will be my generation's "Snow White's Scary Adventures" or something similar. :rotfl: We will take Paxton to DL again in a few years and be excited to ride it only for him to wonder what the big deal was! :confused3 :lmao: Well, maybe not Snow White, but I'm sure something will close that will be upsetting to DH and/or I for its nostalgia.

Toontown there is fantastic! And like you said, good that you are going while DD is still into that sort of environment. But it has more to keep older kids interested than WDW's version of Toontown did, mostly the gags over by Roger Rabbit. There was a section where you could get inside a "jail cell" with bars made of rubber so you could take a picture where it looked like you were pulling the bars open to escape and I saw a lot of tweens having fun taking goofy pictures there!

Watching it now, I can't believe I was allowed to watch it as young as I was at the time, but I'm sure most of that stuff went over my head anyway! I think the spinning aspect of the ride would have her interested whether she knew the story or not at this point.

I was debating doing an update tomorrow, and you just convinced me that I should! :thumbsup2 Your trip is getting so close!!

DAY 3 Continued: Wednesday May 16th

After a nice nap, the three of us were up and moving by 3:15 and headed out to the car by 3:40 to get back to the park! We got to the garage and took the elevator down to the area where the trams pick up and DH took these pictures.

0791.jpg

0792.jpg

The escalators to the parking garage, for a little perspective.

We took the tram back to the parks, and went through bag check quickly. We decided to hit up DL first since we would be making another attempt at World of Color later and would go over to DCA closer to showtime.

First, we stopped for some pictures in front of the trains station/Mickey grass at my insistence.

0794.jpg

0796.jpg

With that out of the way, DH wanted to use his Space Mountain FP from earlier in the day, so we split up. I was going to try to take DS on Jungle Cruise since DH wasn't too interested in riding that, and we'd meet up in Adventureland when he was finished with Space.

0802-001.jpg

Space Mountain loading area

When I got over to the Jungle Cruise, the wait was something like 30 minutes, so that just wasn't going to work! Instead, I walked over to Critter Country to check out the wait time for Winnie the Pooh. It was basically a walk on, so soon DS and I were cruising through the adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood. I tried calling DH when we got out but he wasn't answering so I figured he wasn't done on the ride yet. We found a bench and DS had a lot of fun playing and climbing on it.

0798.jpg

DH eventually found us and we went back to Adventureland so I could ride Indiana Jones while he found something else to do with DS. I rode using the Single Rider line, which I got a little confused about several times! It was weird because you go up the exit! Then I had to take what is I assume also the handicapped entrance since I had to go up an elevator, over the platform that went over the standby line, and back down an elevator that brought me to the loading area. Although it was kind of a long way to walk, I was on the attraction in no time!

0804.jpg

Oh my goodness, this attraction is fantastic! I had my backpack between my feet and I was in the outside seat. We hit one of those fast turns and I realized I'd better hang on to the strap of my bag so it didn't go flying out of the vehicle. :rotfl: The rooms were so HUGE and you really felt like you were in a scene from the movie. I really enjoyed this attraction! I'm glad even though my first attempt to ride the night of the AP Event didn't work out, I had a chance to experience it.

While I was riding Indiana Jones, DH decided to take DS to see the Enchanted Tiki Room.

0807-002.jpg

0811-001.jpg

I was not disappointed to miss out on this attraction until DH came out with DS and told me DS had a great time dancing and applauding through the entire show. Then I was sad I hadn't experienced it with him to see that. :(

By then, it was around 5 pm so we started looking for a place to eat dinner. We ended up at the Plaza Inn Restaurant on Main Street to get a little something different than the burgers and pizza we had mostly been eating. This was another place served cafeteria style, and ALL of the food looked amazing! I had a hard time turning down the fried chicken or pot roast with mashed potatoes, but the three of us decided on the pasta station instead. We all got the penne pasta with alfredo sauce and chicken. DH's and my portions were huge, but we still got DS a child's portion. He definitely didn't need it and could have easily shared from our plates since we didn't even come close to finishing ours. We felt like we were eating forever and there was still so much leftover! A much smarter plan would have been for the three of us to share one plate of pasta and get one of the delicious looking desserts!

Once we were stuffed, we decided it was time to start heading over to DCA since there were still some things we wanted to try to do there before attempting WoC again. The biggest thing we wanted to ride was California Screamin'! Since I had gotten first dibs on Space Mountain earlier, one we made it to Paradise Pier, DH went to ride CS first while I took DS on Little Mermaid again. We walked right onto the ride, and my phone immediately started ringing. It was DH telling me the Single Rider for CS was not operating then (??) so he was going to meet us at the Little Mermaid exit. Once we met up, we decided to walk over and ride Triton's Carrousel. Since about 20 minutes had passed, DH ran over to the Cast Member at the CS line to ask about Single Rider and they were letting people in again, so I said I'd take DS on the Carrousel while DH rode CS.

0817.jpg

0819.jpg

0820.jpg

0825.jpg

DS loved riding the Carrousel! He giggled almost the entire time, and when he wasn't giggling, he was saying, "Wheeee! Wheee!" It was adorable!

Meanwhile DH got a picture of the California Screamin' track.

0827.jpg

We met up after we were both done, and swapped. DH took DS on the Carrousel twice while I rode California Screamin' through the Single Rider line. Man, was it ever chaotic up on the loading platform!! There is just SO much going on, I almost missed the CM waving me over to get on the coaster.

This was probably my favorite attraction in all of DCA, because I'm a roller coaster junkie! The launch was fantastic, as was the inversion in the Mickey head. SO. MUCH. FUN! I wish we could have ridden it a dozen more times, but with DS with us, we didn't want to keep riding the thrill rides and missing out on the time with him.

When I caught up with them, they were still on their second ride on the Carrousel. DS was still lit up like a Christmas tree & loving it. In fact, when the ride ended, he started sobbing when DH took him off! So what did we do? Yep, got right back on the Carrousel, this time all three of us! I rode sitting behind DS.

0829.jpg

After DS's Carrousel marathon, we decided it was time to move on to something else.

We went over to Mickey's Fun Wheel with DH begging me the entire time to go for one of the swinging gondolas instead of the stationary ones. Even though I was hesitant, somehow I let him convince me it would be fun, so we joined that line. I was starting to have second thoughts the closer we got to the loading platform, but suddenly, DS did something that saved me having to ride. Yay, right?! Wrong! He peed all over me!!! Never has this ever happened ANYWHERE since DS was born (aside from him wetting through the diaper at night a few times), and it happened right there in line. I was holding him and talking to DH when suddenly I felt something wet on my arm. I thought maybe it was from the little girl with the bubble gun in front of us, until I realized it was warm. :/ DH grabbed him and carried him out of the line holding him as far out as possible, and I heard several people in the line asking, "Did he throw up?" as we went past them.

Luckily for me, it didn't get on my clothes so I just needed a good arm washing in the restroom. And luckily, we had decided to bring pants in the bag to change DS into in case it got chilly that night during WoC, so I was able to clean him up and change him into his jeans. It was a good thing he didn't do this earlier in the trip at all, because that was the first time we had thought to bring extra clothes for him into the parks. Rookie mistake, I know! We should ALWAYS have extra clothes for DS on us at all times!!

By the time we were both cleaned up, the wait time for the Fun Wheel had grown, so we didn't get back in line, thank goodness. I was really glad not to have to ride on those swinging gondolas!! Instead, we walked around the Paradise Pier area in and out of the shops to buy some souvenirs and on the lookout for ice cream, but the only place in that area had soft serve and we weren't in the mood for that.

0835.jpg

0839.jpg

0842.jpg

0850.jpg

After walking around a bit, we decided to head over to the WoC FP viewing area to give it another shot. Apparently at some point, DH walked through the Bakery Tour and got a picture of the Mickey bread.

0859.jpg

When we got to the area, we crossed our fingers and went inside to try to find a good spot. Of course, if you are a group of adults or the kids in your party are older, definitely get to the viewing area as early as possible to get the best spot. Since we had DS and didn't think he'd do well waiting, we usually waited until about 8 pm to find a spot which meant we were higher up (but then again, we didn't want to get wet either!) and crowds had formed already. We managed to keep making our way down further (DH thinks we actually might have strayed from the blue area to the yellow) and found a really great spot with only one group between us and the nearest railing.

We got settled into our spot, and were smart enough to remember the pacifier this time, so DS got that as soon as he started getting cranky from being in the same place too long! Learned our lesson from the night before, that's for sure. DH ran off once we were settled to track down an ice cream cart and came back with an ice cream cookie sandwich for himself and one of these bad boys for me to enjoy while we waited.

0860.jpg

45 minutes is a LOOONG time to wait for a show with a toddler who needs entertaining, but we managed to do it this time, much easier than last time since we had the pacifier too, although he didn't seem to need it as bad as he did the night before. Go figure, right?

DH got this movie while we waited of Paradise Pier as the colors changed.

Finally it was SHOWTIME!

UP NEXT: World of Color FINALLY!

Yay!You finally get to see WoC!!! ( I am assuming!!)

And yay for skipping the swinging gondolas (even though it was because you got peed on)! Smart move. I hear they are pretty intense (esp with a little one!) :woohoo:

Another great update! I like how you and DH split up at times so that you can do the 'big' rides while the other does something more kid-friendly with DS :goodvibes I've heard such great things about the Indiana Jones ride, can't wait to get our Disneyland trip booked for next year so I can start really planning!! :cloud9:

My husband hates roller coasters, he calls them death machines. I, on the other hand, love them.

Of course, when we came up to Mickey's "Fun" Wheel, HE decides we should do the swinging gondolas. Then proceeded to laugh at me when I kept screaming on the ride. ...I don't understand how that ride doesn't have you strapped in tighter. It was terrifying.

Exactly. Isn't that excitement he has the exact reason that you just absolutely love and look forward to the Country Bears at Disney World? :confused3 :rolleyes1 :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

I'm glad you got a chance to ride Indiana Jones. I know they say it is the same ride as Dinsosaur, but I fail to believe that. How can it be "the same ride" when the theming couldn't possibly be any different. I think that would be one of the hightlights for me if I ever get to Disneyland.

Oh yeah, and California Screamin' too.

And Carsland.

Ok, I really need to get out west sometime. :rolleyes1

I'm glad you're finally going to get a chance to see WoC!

It worked well to take him on attractions this time since he didn't nap in the stroller in the parks like he did last year, and of course it was a lot more fun than just sitting there! Indiana Jones is fantastic. It was one of those things I was bummed I only had time to ride once. I would have loved to try it out again!

I love nothing more than a good roller coaster! But your post makes me even happier DS saved me from the Fun Wheel, even if it meant getting peed on! Heck, he might not have been the only one peeing after taking that ride if you know what I mean! :rotfl2:

I guess I will just have to give in and TRY to find something enjoyable about Country Bears since it will probably lead to some more cute Paxton moments. Darn it!

I guess technically it's the same ride as in vehicle and track, but that's about where the similarities end. The themeing and story and scenes are so vastly different that you don't stop to think to yourself, "Wow this is a lot like Dinosaur." As you are riding it, it's really nothing like Dinosaur and not to be missed. I can't stand Dinosaur because it scares the mess out of me, so I was more than happy to not see a giant carnotaurus at the end!!

Yeah, you really need to get to DL!! And I really need to get BACK so I can see Cars Land!!

OMG!!! Those swinging gondolas look HORRIFYING!!! I don't blame you for not wanting to go in one of those!! I'd take getting peed on to get me out of that one for sure!:lmao:
