The WDW Vets Head West! A DL May 2012 TR - Complete!

Amazing pictures! You do a great job composing your photos :thumbsup2 Thanks for sharing what lens you upgraded to...I was just about to ask since my current lens doesn't do well on low light situations. Btw, did you end up keeping your new lens on all of the time for the daylight/outdoor shots too?

Can't wait to hear about more of your trip!

Thank you! Love hearing positive feedback on my photos, helps to make it worth viewing the park through the lens of a camera.:thumbsup2 I kept the lens on for everything it really is a great all around lens. The last couple of days there I took my other two lenses out of my bag because I was never using them. :lmao: The majority of the pictures we took were with that lens some of the pictures were taken with our point in shoot due to convenience.

I'm glad that Paxton was able to warm up to characters even if he wasn't as excited about them as he was before.

If your DH had ordered an adult meal, Paxton probably would have ate half of a nugget and a few fries and been done... at least that's how it usually seems to work for us. :lmao:

I'm looking forward to seeing this WOC update... :thumbsup2

That's pretty much what happened for his other meals, but I never ordered a kids meal again. I just stuffed myself by eating mine and the rest of his.:lmao: Rather have too much to eat than not enough.

WOC was definitely an experience. ;)

Sorry I'm so bad about checking the DL TR thread since yours is the only one I read. That being said, I LOVE the updates!! I love seeing the attractions that are just at DL that I kinda forget about, like the Alice in Wonderland ride! The DCA rides look like so much fun, I think that's new since I was there last, and def didn't pay attention to the kids rides that were there anyway! You're making me want to go back!

The Little Mermaid ride looks great - what was it like? I can't wait for it to open at MK either. Is that slated for 2014? I don't remember. Nope, looks like "holidays 2012" - maybe it'll be open for my December trip?! That'd be awesome.

Your DL/DCA day sounds like so much fun already. Love the Picture of Paxton smiling on the ladybug ride! :goodvibes And great to see him okay with the characters again - the pic with Pluto on the ground with him is so darn adorable!

The Little Mermaid ride was fantastic! It kind of starts out with Scuttle explaining the premise of the movie, and then you move through the main scenes of the movie with all of the music. Most of the scenes you just glide past similar to how you do in Nemo & Friends, but the Under the Sea room you actually move in a circle around the room so you are almost going through the scene and get to see it from all kinds of different angles, which is probably why it was my favorite part! Everything was bright and colorful, it was just absolutely beautiful. I loved it!

Oh man, did he LOVE that Ladybug ride! I really wouldn't have expected that to be his favorite since he loves stuff with music that he can dance to. But he definitely had fun spinning around!

I'm glad that Paxton was able to warm up to characters even if he wasn't as excited about them as he was before.

Seeing him with the characters this year made me appreciate even more the memories we made with him at WDW in November. I'm glad we didn't go with our original plan to wait until about this age to take him for the first time, because he probably wouldn't have wanted anything to do with the characters by then!

You are probably right about lunch. :rotfl: There were quite a few other meals where we ordered Paxton a kids entree and he barely made a dent in it. We wasted quite a bit of money on food for him! But that's unfortunately pretty typical with him.

Finally joining in over here. I'll try and get caught up later this evening

Finally joining in over here. I'll try and get caught up later this evening

 Happy to see you here, Carla!

Bug's Land looks so cute for little ones!

It was adorable! We've never done Pixie Hollow, so aside from the TSM queue, I can't think of anything else we've done to give you that shrunken-down feeling like Bug's Land did. Plus with all the clovers over us, it was a pretty shady area of the park too! That was a plus in the middle of a hot California day.

Great updates! I have to say, your little guy is sooo cute!! Love that interaction he got from Pluto....so sweet!
I remember those mini naps in the car, totally messed up your afternoon when you just knew they needed more sleep, but there was no way it was going to happen....excellent job keeping him awake!:thumbsup2
Can't wait to read more, more, more!!

So the other day I was thinking- "I wonder if Khertz is going to do a PTR for her Oct trip?" Then as I was crusing the PTR boards, I find that not only do you have a PTR, but DLR TR as well! :faint:

I'm just going to blame my poor eyesight for not reading the links in your siggy!

I'm on board now and I'm loving reading about your adventures. Paxton is looking so much older and (if it is even possible) cuter than ever! :goodvibes I love, love, love the photos of him and Pluto, Paxton has such a sweet smile!

You guys are really making DLR look appealing, and are making the wheels turn in my head even faster. I've got to get out there, preferably sooner than later!

Oh and I loved the little details that you posted, the different characters in the popcorn wagons are so cute! Do you remember that they used to have popcorn carts like that at the MK? I think it was only on Main Street, and it was definitely the clown. I have really vivid memories of that from when I was a kid, and I remember being disappointed my first trip back as an adult that they popcorn carts had changed. Maybe they shipped them all over to DL?

Thanks so much! It was really cute the way he was so hesitant with them at first, then started warming up. I have pictures of it from some of his other character meets, but he would clasp his hands behind his back and kind of shuffle up to them slowly like he was a little nervous, but always with a big smile on his face!

Ugh, the mini nap!! Luckily, we managed to avoid those the whole 4 days. When going back to the resort for naptime or bedtime, we traded off sitting in the backseat and keeping him awake. It never fails to happen when we go to the mall around here, and are trying to get him back. That 10 minute drive home feels like it takes forever!! I was happy it was not as difficult in DL as it is at home.

:lmao: Well, I'm just happy you made it to both. Better late than never!!! It is probably my fault for having so many links in my signature that I had to shrink them down. :rotfl:

DLR was quite the experience, and I really fell in love! I bet you & Everett would too. It's so charming, and small but packed full of great stuff to do! I thought MK had a lot for the little ones to ride, but DL has those same rides and even more, which made it great for us since we probably won't be back for a long time. I was worried that we'd be taking him all the way to the opposite coast and he wouldn't be able to ride much, but happily that was not the case at all!

Interesting about the popcorn cart guys! I don't remember them being at WDW, but I'm sure I never paid attention to that kind of detail as a kid. Wouldn't that be funny if they really did send them to DLR and those are the same Fantasyland clowns you remember from when you were a kid?!

I'm all caught up :thumbsup2. I really like all the different attractions that you have shown. Looks like alot of rides that would be good for little ones. I do have one question since we will be taking DS to WDW when he is 17 months. Does Paxton have any problems with strangers? When our DS meets strangers it takes him awhile to warm up to them. He doesn't get upset or anything he would just rather put his head on my shoulder and play the "I'm super shy and Mommy's little angel" He loves his stuffed Mickey and characters but I have no idea how he would react to a huge Mickey walking up to him. I realize all kids are totally different but I was just curious what you guys experienced... Thanks bunches!

We actually have the opposite problem...DS is too friendly! He will sit in random strangers laps if they will let him, and will pretty much walk up to anyone and start talking to them. Recently, he has been very excited about waving to people, so he does it constantly. One time I was pushing him through the mall in his stroller and he was waving the entire time at everyone that passed us. We haven't done any face characters yet, but I'm hoping we can meet a couple of princesses next trip because I think he will love them. He just loves people! It makes me kind of nervous sometimes, because he would be a very easy child to abduct and would just go off with anyone, so I feel like I have to be close by every minute! Hopefully your DS will warm up and enjoy the characters! It's so fun when they do. :goodvibes

DAY 2 Continued: Tuesday May 15th

After a nice nap back at the resort, we were up and moving around 4 pm, but it still took us awhile to get out the door so we didn't get to the trams from the parking garage until a little before 5 pm. We hadn't really decided ahead of time where we wanted to go when we got back, but we decided on the spot to go back to Disneyland since we had not spent much time there this morning. Before we could enter the park, we had to again stop at the ticket booths to check me in for the AP Fantasmic! Event that night. I still was not definitely sure I wanted to go, but I figured I could get the wristband now and decide when the time came if I was going to brave venturing out to the park alone later that night. Once I had my wristband, we headed through the DL turnstiles.

The first attraction we headed to was Pirates of the Caribbean.

(DH didn't snap a picture of the ride building, so we did another night which is why it suddenly looks dark!)

0626-001.jpg

Now I have to say, I have heard and read over and over again that POTC at Disneyland is better than at WDW, and I never really believed it until I rode it! I loved that it had so many extra scenes, and the first Bayou scene as you are floating past the Blue Bayou restaurant is really nice and calm. I think this version also has a second drop that the WDW version does not have? Also, some of the scenes seemed so much bigger than their WDW counterparts, and filled up the whole room instead of just one side like they tend to do at WDW. DS must have enjoyed it too, because he was dancing to the music! Guess he was born to be a Disney pirate:.

When we walked out into New Orleans Square there was a pirate band playing some pirate-y music.

0610.jpg

That morning, we had spent all of our time in Fantasyland and it occurred to me that we had never passed The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh! Of course, a quick glance at the map told me Pooh was actually in Critter Country, not Fantasyland, so that's where we went to next.

0630.jpg

0631.jpg

Splash Mountain, which I never did ride!

0633.jpg

0634.jpg

0635.jpg

Although the queue here is not interactive like it is in WDW, it was still a cute queue with lots of little treasures tucked into the trees. Luckily, we didn't have a ton of time to look at them, because we walked right up to board a ride vehicle!

Since this ride uses more blacklight, it was easier to capture some good pictures than POTC had been.

DAY 2 Continued:

By the time we finished up on Winnie the Pooh, we were getting hungry for dinner. We checked out the menu at the Hungry Bear Restaurant since it was right there, but neither of us were sure about eating the sweet potato fries, so we ended up at Golden Horseshoe instead. Since I had the wristband, we were able to purchase special meals available at different CS locations, so DH got some kind of special party hot dog, I got the fish & chips, and we made the biggest mistake ever and got DS the Kids Power Pack. It came with string cheese, yogurt, apple slices, and goldfish crackers. I figured he'd eat most of this no problem! Yeah, right!! Refused to eat the cheese or the apple slices (he never really eats cheese at home, but he does eat diced apples, so not sure why he wouldn't eat those!), ate half the yogurt and we didn't even open the goldfish because he had been eating those as a snack every day. He ended up eating some of my fries and DH's hotdog to supplement because he was literally crying and throwing a fit every time we tried to give him some of his own food! So much for trying to get him to have something a little healthier...

0658-001.jpg

From this picture, you'd never be able to tell how awful dinner really was!

Once we were finished eating, we made our way back to Fantasyland to ride something we had missed that morning, Pinocchio's Daring Journey.

0660.jpg

0661.jpg

It was a cute little dark ride, but man did I forget how dark the story of Pinocchio is!

We were about ready to head over to DCA to get in an attraction or two before taking our spots for World of Color, but we wanted just one more thing before we left! Another of the snacks available for the AP Event-goers was a brownie berry skewer...brownie bites alternating with strawberries drizzled in chocolate! We stopped to pick one up at the Bengal Barbecue CS in Adventureland to take with us and eat on the promenade before entering DCA.

0662-001.jpg

Every bit as delicious as it looks!

We made our way into DCA and remembered first to stop and have our free 5x7 photo printed with the voucher we had gotten that morning for the Visa meet & greet. When we did this in WDW last year, they only showed you the pictures from the m&g as an option to have printed, but here they let us see all of our photos and told us we could choose any of them. We ended up picking one of the ones from the Pluto greet anyway of the three of us, and they customized it for us with borders & Pluto's signature. :thumbsup2

Up next, DH wanted to ride ToT using the rider switch pass we had gotten earlier. Since DS had not sat quietly in the stroller while I had ridden earlier, we came up with a new plan for when we wanted to ride attractions with a height requirement, and decided the one sitting out with DS would take him on an attraction nearby that we had already done as a family. That way he could be entertained while we still got to ride the thrill rides.

So since the plan was for DH to be riding ToT, I was happy to take DS for another spin on Monster's Inc. since we had enjoyed it so much that morning. I walked up to the attraction only to find it was already closed! So much for that plan. We walked over to ToT intent on waiting for DH nearby only to run into him coming back towards us. He said the FP line was enormous and not moving, so he didn't feel like waiting either. It's a bummer because he never ended up riding ToT and we never rode Monsters Inc. again for the rest of the trip.

We still had some time to kill before we were ready to get a World of Color spot, so we decided to head back to Bug's Land and ride the Ladybug Boogie again since DS had enjoyed it so much that morning.

0663.jpg

A little video of DS on the ride

Once we had gotten jostled around on there, we made our way to Paradise Pier to locate our FP location.

0667-001.jpg

0677-001.jpg

We found a good spot and settled in to wait for the show to start in about 45 minutes. All was going well.

0674.jpg

...And then everything went to hell! I had asked DH when we were getting ready to come back to the park if we should bring DS's pacifier with us just in case, but he didn't think we'd need it, so we left it. Prior to vacation, we had gotten DS down to just using his paci at bedtime, but we had been a little heavy handed with it on our travel day because of the plane ride and the pure exhaustion. I think we both honestly thought he would fall asleep in the stroller without it. Despite all of our efforts (rocking the stroller, holding him, bouncing and singing) he was just not having it! He was crying, kicking, going back and forth between my arms and DH's and nothing was consoling him. I kept thinking if we could just hold on until the show started, he'd be interested enough in that to calm down. After almost 30 minutes, DH and I looked at each other and just gave up. Only 15 minutes before the show was about to start, we decided to leave. I didn't want to disrupt the people around us anymore, and I didn't want to keep trying to get him to hang on until the show only to have the crying get worse.

DH and I were both really bummed as we strolled through the empty park on the way out (Of course, once we put him in the stroller and started walking he was fine...TODDLERS! :sad2:). But we knew we had been good parents and made the right decision, and at least we had 2 more nights to try to catch the show with hopefully better outcomes.

We got back to the resort and bathed DS and put him to bed. Even up until the last minute, I was going back and forth about whether I was going to venture out to DL alone for the AP event, and despite all of my worries and reservations about it...I decided to go!

At 9:30, I snuck out the door (DS was already passed out sleeping in the living room) and headed back to DLR by myself. I had driven to the park when we went back from our break (usually DH does all of the vacation driving) so that I would be familiar with driving the car and the route. I parked with no problem and made sure I got a spot as close to the elevators as I could.

DL was closing at 10 that night, and it was about 10-till by the time I got into the park. I hurried as quickly as I could up Main Street to Tomorroland so I could try to ride Space Mountain before park closing since it wouldn't be running during the party.

0682.jpg

However, when I got over to the attraction, the wait time said 45 minutes. I know sometimes they beef it up right before closing and you don't actually end up waiting that long, but if it was a real wait time, I definitely didn't feel like waiting 45 minutes! So I hopped in the 20 minute line for Star Tours instead.

0679-001.jpg

I got to see another scene (the pod races) that I had never experienced before, although I did go back to the underwater planet with Jar Jar Binks. But it was still a very fun attraction!

There were 2 rides open during the party I wanted to try to ride while I was by myself so that I wouldn't have to ride them while the three of us were together, and they were Big Thunder Mountain and Indiana Jones.

I walked over to Big Thunder Mountain in Frontierland and waited maybe 10 minutes if that to ride. Since I was in the car by myself, I was sliding back and forth across the seat which made it feel like an even wilder ride! After that, I tried to find my way to Indiana Jones, but I was kind of wandering around in circles. At one point, I sat down on a bench under a lantern to look at the map to try and figure out which way I needed to go, but then I felt ridiculous being at an AP event looking at a map, so I stopped looking. :lmao: I had no clue how to get to Adventureland from where I was, so I went to New Orleans Square to check out the crowds for the Fantasmic viewing.

It was already PACKED around the Rivers of America, so I decided since I wouldn't have a great view anyway, I might as well ride something else. Since it was right there, I took another ride on Pirates of the Caribbean, which was walk-on. It was weird going through Blue Bayou now when it was closed and deserted after seeing it packed full of people eating just a few hours before when we had ridden!

After riding that, I decided I'd better find myself a spot for Fantasmic. I snuck in under the rope of the middle section, and had a pretty obstructed view. I wasted the time until 11:30 playing games on my phone. Once the show started, I was able to move over along the rope a few different times until I could see a little better between people's heads. I'm so short, I would have had to be there from the minute the party started to have an unobstructed view anyway.

Since DH had gotten a lot of pictures the night before and I only had the point & shoot camera, I didn't even try to take any pictures and just enjoyed the show instead. I've never been that big of a fan of Fantasmic in WDW and prefer to only see it once every few trips instead of every time. While I disliked not having a seat and having people's heads in the way, overall I enjoyed the DL version of the show a lot more! The dragon was absolutely incredible, as was the pirate ship!! It was definitely worth going back to the park by myself to see this show, and really a once in a lifetime opportunity for me since we will probably never be considered DL AP holders ever again. We were so lucky and happy that an event overlapped with our vacation dates, and allowed us to see a show we wouldn't have been able to see otherwise!

There was still about 45 minutes to an hour of the party left when the show ended, but I was ready to get back to the room and go to sleep. I followed the huge crowd leaving the area and they actually led me right past Indiana Jones! I considered stopping to ride, but kept walking instead knowing I'd get to ride another day. I was just too tired!

0683-001.jpg

I couldn't resist getting one shot of the Castle lit up on the way out!

It took no time at all to get a tram back to the garage, and walking back to the car was not nearly the scary experience I had been imagining prior to taking the trip. Even when I got back to the resort, I managed to get a parking space right next to the building where our room was, and I saw security out walking through the lot too so that made me feel safer and DH appreciated me not calling him down to meet me at the car and walk me back to the room! :rotfl: It was about 12:30 am when I got back, and all I wanted to do was crawl into bed! So since we had a rope drop morning ahead of us, that's exactly what I did.

UP NEXT: Another attempt at WoC!

I loved POTC at DL. Did you get to eat at Blue Bayou? So good!

Bummer you missed out on WoC. I hope you got to see it later during your trip!

I'm not a huge fan of Fantasmic but I enjoyed it more at DL. Maybe it's the backdrop of the park. Maybe it's because I can walk away anytime I want and don't have to deal with a huge throng of people headed in the same directly. But I think it trumps WDW's version.

Looking forward to reading more!

Glad you liked POTC! I appreciate your comparisons to WDW throughout your TR. Hopefully one day, we'll get to experience WDW.

Sorry to hear about your WOC experience. Gotta love those "toddler" moments...which can be super stressful, especially in that confined area where you can't take your child out for a change of scenery and then comeback. (When we were at WOC last, the CM's wouldn't even let me take the baby to the nearest restroom to change DS's diaper and come back with 30 minutes till showtime because they could not guarantee re-entry) Luckily you still have two more days to still make WOC....please tell me you made it!!!

I'm sorry the power pack wasn't a big hit! I've looked for it around WDW after reading about it in PirateKate's TRs, but I haven't been able to find it. Its too bad Everett wasn't with you guys, he'd never pass up a piece of cheese! :rotfl: It drives me batty when DS won't eat, so I completely understand how frustrating it is!

Brownies, strawberries and chocolate sauce- I think I need one of those right now! :rotfl:

I hope you guys made it back to WOC. Its tough being a parent sometimes. Everett is a paci guy too, although he only uses it at night. I'm not looking forward to the day when I have to take it away! :headache: I understand what headaches those silly pacis can cause!

Because we were short on time, we skipped all TS restaurants so no Blue Bayou this time. But I would be interested in trying it out next time we plan a DL trip since we will hopefully be there longer next time!

I think you are probably right about the other pluses of Fantasmic at DL. Despite a ton of people leaving the area at the same time, they are dispersing to different areas of the park instead of all trying to funnel to the exits of the stadium like at WDW. Plus, you can really just walk right up and find a spot just before the show starts instead of standing in line for an hour to get in. It probably won't be a GOOD spot, but still.

Well, this TR did already convince one person to take their first DL trip, so maybe it will also push you to your first WDW trip! :thumbsup2 When I came home, everyone kept asking which is better, DL or WDW, and now that I have experienced both, I can't choose!! There are such great and unique things about both of them that I can't pick one over the other. Unfortunately, DL is just too far away to make regular trips out there, but we definitely fell in love with DLR and this won't be our last trip!

It seemed like when we left that they were prepared to let us back in because they asked us, "How many?" and were going to give us some FP's back until we told them we were leaving for the night. Maybe it depends on how crowded it is or something?

I can't answer that question yet! :rolleyes1 Then there would be no suspense... :lmao:

They had the power pack at almost every CS place we went to in DL. I don't know what it is about cheese but we couldn't even trick him into eating it like we can sometimes do with other things! Trying to feed a toddler is one of the hardest things ever. Right now we are going through an "I hate carrots" phase, even though up until now, carrots were the one vegetable he was GUARANTEED to eat!! So so frustrating, and that night was definitely the worst!

We broke Paxton of the paci completely about a week after we came home. The first night was heartbreaking. He cried and screamed for 45 minutes until he finally fell asleep. The next night, we tried giving him his baby Donald Duck plush that we bought him on our trip when I was pregnant with him. Worked like a charm! Not one tear since that night! Hopefully you will find something like that that will work for Everett when the time comes. I did get a few other suggestions from friends on facebook that made me laugh. Most of them said they cut the tips and their kids would tell them the pacis didn't "work" anymore! :rotfl:

Love your report. 10 visits to WDW and 1 to DL I am ready for DL again. Gald to see the Dolfin cove photos and the driving info, we are Wyndham owners as well. First report I have ever read about it. Your report is really Awsome:thumbsup2
