The Walking Thread

So whats up in your area for shoes. Locally OC California, Hoku is out, On is in. I wear sketchers because the step in is the greatest invention ever, but most everyone else is wearing Ons.

TiggerTigger, you are not alone! I have been there. I'm sorry that you are experiencing this. I know it's hard to eat when you are so stressed. Try to find things that pack nutrition in smaller quantities. It does help. I had to take care of my mom while I was dealing with all that. I will put you in my prayers and send you positive energy.

It was wet, breezy, and 45 degrees today. It was cold. But I layered up and walked. I was by myself self today so I was able to walk the speed I wanted. I only did 2 miles, but they were both 15 minute miles! I'm sure I will pay for that tomorrow.

It was so cold that even the dandelions didn't want to be open. Very few open today.

For me, I get fitted at a run shop. I wouldn’t go with trends unless it’s a lifestyle sneaker to wear casually. So, it’s what’s recommended based on my foot mapping, wear patterns, needs/uses and comfort during store testing on the treadmill. The Brooks Glycerin is traditionally a safe bet for me, but my newer speed shoes are ASICS Superblast 3s and my trail runners are New Balance Fresh Foams.

I have tried the Hoka Bondi and the Hoka Clifton and I’m not a fan of either. I see a lot of people wearing On at the gym and my kids wear them as casual everyday shoes but I haven’t seen a lot of them on people on our trails or at races.

While six of these pairs are in rotation and a seventh is for specialized use (the trail runners), this is currently everything I have that theoretically “could” be taken out for some miles. I would probably regret it with the older ones, but I keep them around because they still have tread life.

I've found Brooks to be great, however Ons do have a better cushion/shock resistance. At Disney I find wearing my Brooks in the morning and then switching to Ons when we go back in the evening is a great combo.

Happy Sunday!!!

I raced today but I did choose to do intervals. So, it’s not a 100% walking effort. In fact, my heat map for pacing looks like a dotted line because of my fairly consistent run/walk/run approach. I didn’t use a timer either. In the early stages, I went by feel but after the halfway point, I started using street signs which had a consistent pattern. Still, my walking played a tremendous role in today’s results. The last time I really got into interval running I wasn’t pushing hard enough in my walking intervals. All of this focus on walking and walking those races last month has given me the frame of reference to know when my walk is too casual. There were very few instances where my walking pace fell below 13:45. There were quite a few times where walking dipped as low as 12:50-12:55.

I will spare you the run details as that’s not the point of this thread but I will say that I not only met but far exceeded my goals. If I can stick with this method of training and keep mainly to walking, I think I can achieve some things I never thought possible. After today, I think I want to wait for cooler weather. I also think a race with a view is good and all but it’s not everything.
- It was upper 70s and nearly 100% humidity today. I really felt the heat after a while and I know it slowed me down. We had a strong sea breeze which helped in that regard but also added to resistance, which is another slowing factor.
- The view was great but I never considered the smell of low tide. By mile 10, it was turning my stomach, which also slowed me down.
- The timing for today was a good test for some things with Disney. While the race started at 7, Galveston is quite a bit of a drive. I was up before 3:30 and out the door a little after 4am. That’s comparable to RunDisney timing. Plus, the tiaras and tutus were very Princess.
- Like most races, I met a number of great people. Those memories will stick with me just as much as the race itself.
- I currently feel like I smoked a full pod cigarettes (I quit nearly 19 years ago). The race went right along Galveston’s Seawall Blvd and we ran/walked right next to traffic. Who knows how much exhaust/fumes I inhaled.
- Bittersweet, but the start/finish was right next to this big historic hotel that is tied to extremes with memories. I had a phenomenal weekend rehearsal every here during my symphony years. I loved it so much I wanted to get married there. DH and I both fell in love with the venue but it took them weeks to get back to me to secure the deposit. I couldn’t trust them with my money or plans after that… so it remains the beautiful place that never happened.

I think some also hinges on the model. DD17 has Cloud 6s and I find their cushioning comparable to lighter Brooks models like the Launch or Revel while something like the Cloudmonster is in the vein of the Glycerin Max.

Happy Monday!

I took it easier today because my body was telling me that I put in a race effort. I guess that's a good thing because it tells me that I worked hard and didn't leave much on the table. Still plenty of room for growth, but growth also comes from treating myself properly in recovery after such an effort. I'll start pushing back towards normal, at least for distance tomorrow, but today was just making myself move. I put in 5.29 miles at a nice breezy relaxing pace. That also meant altering my route, which is fine, but also made me realize that I prefer my norm.

I didn't stop much for pics because I knew I was going slower and I wanted some rest time at home just to ease into my morning. 1. I was craving doggy snuggles. 2. More of what I planted in March is finally starting to come up...including a surprise. So, I wanted to survey the growth. I may skip walk pics tomorrow for you in favor of spring growth pics, but for today, I'll share some of what's going on out there. It's actually kind of walking related...I've never shared but surveying the growth has been one of my more recent post walk treats. I'll spare you the novel of what's growing, what may be growing, etc. but I may share pics tomorrow.

Funny side note from yesterday, but between the time before the race where I was moving around to semi-warm up to some time afterwards, my watch did pick up two separate and distinct walks. Walk 1 was 48 minutes and walk 2 was nearly 20 minutes. Most of my pics from yesterday were pre-race, so i guess you really did get walking pics after all!

I walked yesterday evening, 3 miles. The ended with blue skies and sunshine, which is the exact opposite of how the day started.

Unfortunately, I was hit with a horrible stomach flu last night and have been in bed all day today. So no walking today, and likely not tomorrow. I just don't have the strength. ☹️ I really look forward to my daily walks.

TiggerTigger, I think you did an excellent job on your race! You have certainly given me inspiration and motivation to do more. You can share your running or interval work if like. And you share whatever photos you want to post. I like to see what it is like in other parts of the country. I haven't been blessed with ability to travel. DH traveled for work for 20 years so he just wants to be home.

I'm sorry about your stomach flu. Those are just awful. Hopefully it's nothing more than one of those 24 hour bugs where you start to feel like yourself pretty quickly. Hopefully you have something like Gatorade or Pedialyte handy as well as some nice bland foods to help recovery.

I'm on the cusp of travel season, so I am hoping to share other parts of the country...although, I am going to have to miss at least one of DDs tournaments...unless something wild happens with air prices. I love to travel. I start going stir crazy if I'm home for too long. During Covid, we'd hop in the car and drive (since it wasn't prohibited here) just to get a change of scenery. I once drove the Louisiana just because I hadn't traveled in a while and the state line is close enough to make me feel like I was really going somewhere without going too far. I do the same with Galveston sometimes just because hitting the coastal areas has a similar effect. That used to be easier. I used to be about a 35-45 min drive to Galveston. Now, I'm close to 90 minutes.

I will probably share more race details tomorrow as I realize I shared the pic of that officer and he's a great story. I also met some other interesting people who I think make it stand out why so many people come to enjoy races...even if they're slow or walk the entire time. Yeah...things to think about for tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday!

Today was another 100% walking effort. I went 6.37 miles. I pushed myself to be faster today, but I wasn't expecting much. My body will be in recovery mode for at least a week and the odds of seeing anything overly speedy is highly unlikely. So, I wound up feeling like I was working harder and moving faster than I really was. Still, I got a later start and sunrise looked like it would be best from the dock. So, I pushed myself that extra for the time boost to allow for a quick stop.

I also promised some race details.
- That police officer pictured above is a really cool story. He's done this race quite a few times and always runs the half in full uniform. He's a lieutenant in the police dept and has been there since something like 1991. He works three jobs just to stay busy, involves, and varying it up. His job enabled him to go back to school and get his pharmacy degree, so he also works as a pharmacist. Sounds like he does that at facilities for people in need. I hate to do him any disservice but I forget the third job. Either way, I was behind him for a while on the route and crossed paths once. Super nice and supportive guy.
- I met a woman at the start who wasn't sure if she was going to finish in time but she was going to try... because she's spent the last handful of years fighting for her life. She'd had a decent chunk of her liver removed in order to save her. I don't know if she finished but I passed her at one point and tried to encourage her the best I could
- I met a woman who appeared like she was probably a good 20-30 years older than me. She was just so giddy to be in the environment and super curious about all of us with glitter. She was out ahead of me for a while, but when I passed her, I realized that she had something with her leg. At this point, she was walking, and the one leg didn't seem to bend at the knee. I'm thinking it was a mid race injury because the sheer math behind her current pace meant I should have passed her miles earlier...but either way...she was still doing it and had a smile on her face.
- We were promised firemen (and one fire woman) to give us our medals at the finish. They weren't kidding. When I crossed the finish line, this enormous muscular man wearing pretty much just his uniform pants and some harnesses greeted me with a huge smile and draped the medal around my neck.
- I know champagne was advertised to go with the celebratory race finish but I never saw any. It's probably an omen since I'm not a huge fan and the cheap stuff would really turn my already turned stomach. I did, however, find some sparkling water (LaCroix). Not a ton of flavor options but grapefruit seemed like the most appealing in the moment.
- boas and tiaras were available right at the start of the last .1 miles. I did not want to waste any time, so I skipped it mid race and jumped back in to get mine after the fact. Priorities!!! After seeing this process and seeing what was given out, I am so glad I bought my own. I think I already said this...but seriously... I liked mine so much better. I wasn't the only one that went this route. I saw others who came in their own unique tiaras and tutus.

I also promised some plant pics. I may have to split this between two posts. First off...what I bought and how it's going...
1. I bought five monster elephant ear bulbs. These things are supposed to reach 6-10 feet in height and up to an 8 foot spread. I was a little nervous because only one was showing growth for a while, but then I remembered that only one bulb looked more mature. I now have all five showing growth. Due to the potential size, I limited the driveway flowerbed to three and put the remaining two in an empty space up front. So, yay for all five growing.
2. I bought two cleopatra canna lily bulbs. Only one is growing and I have a feeling that's all that's going to grow. It might be an omen. They supposedly multiply on their own like crazy. A neighbor at our first house had big orange ones growing. No clue how many they planted at first but they took over the corners of all four yards around the fence section where they were planted. Those looked a bit different and are a bit shorter. These have deep purple leaves with hints of green. The flowers are supposed to be a blend of bright red with yellow and white. These are supposed to top out around 5 feet in height. I planted them on the left side of our driveway and the very end of this bed. There's iron decorative (but also functional) fencing for the driveway in the mix, so it should create an interesting visual as they fill in and spread.
3. I've shared a bit on the hostas already. I ordered five giant roots and wound up with five standard size and one runt. Supposedly, all of these varieties are known to hit over 4 feet in height and spread over 5 feet in width. All of them are growing and showing early signs of spread...height not so much just yet. I am hoping they spread enough to fill in around the elephant ears and create sort of a visual balance with each other.
4. Starlette lilies- I bought three of these and while I think all three grew, I think all three have died. As you'll see in #5, there's going to be room for confusion and potential surprises. Whatever type of lily was growing had similar leaves to #5 but they had sort of burgundy colored edge to them. While the pics I've seen of the mature plants are solid green, it seemed plausible that these were the starlettes, not just due to quantity, but that the flowers would have been a mix of that deep purplish burgundy with bright orange. I will be utterly shocked if I see any of these blooming, but who knows.
5. Stargazer lilies- These are my favorite. They made up most of my wedding bouquet. I ordered six and I think I have either four or five growing. So, definitely not all, but most. Again, the plants look so similar to the starlettes in the online pics that it's entirely possible that they could be a mix, but I doubt it.
6. The bonus bulbs- In the stargazer packaging I found a two or three smaller bulbs. They almost looked like broken off pieces of the stargazer bulbs...kind of like working with a head of garlic and how you can break off the individual cloves. In any event, they looked strange but I planted them. Two of them are growing, and they look NOTHING like anything else. I used a plan ID app to determine what they are. It said Easter lilies. They do look like the early growth pics I've seen of Easter lilies but the company I ordered from doesn't even sell Easter lilies. The app I used also identified the other lilies as tiger lilies, and I doubt that's right. Although, it does add an interesting thought in the mix. Stargazers are Oriental lilies. Starlettes are Asiatic lilies. Tiger lilies are also Asiatic lilies. So, either they all look too similar to ID without a flower, or I could have a mix of both simply due to the numbers growing...not to mention the mystery lilies.

Oh yes...and weeding is a never ending battle. I do some here and there but I sustained way too many mosquito bites to keep it going.

These are the giant hostas. I know there were four varieties (Big Daddy, Marmalade on Toast (2), Abiqua Drinking Gourd, and Sum and Substance).
IMG_4179.jpegIMG_4178.jpegIMG_4175.jpegIMG_4174.jpegIMG_4173.jpegIMG_4171.jpeg

These are a couple of the lilies that I believe to be stargazers. They all pretty much look the same.
IMG_4172.jpegIMG_4180.jpeg

And these are the bonus bulbs that are a mystery, but the app says are Easter lilies. One literally burst through during the day yesterday. It was definitely not popping through when I came home from my walk yesterday morning but there was a decent size mound of dirt off to the side that was displaced by its eruption from the earth.

Cool race details! Interesting people indeed!
You also have such beautiful walking space. I am somewhat limited in my walking choices since people refuse to leash their aggressive dogs. Your plants are looking good. I didn't realize that they would get so large. Mine pretty much tops out at 2 feet. I cut way back on our flower beds, down to 2, because I can't keep up with the maintenance. There will be no walking for me today.
