The video game thread

Not a gamer by far, I play on my Switch and only play Big Brain Academy, Disney Magical Worlds, Tetris and Animal Crossing! LOL!!!
My question is about the newest XBox: My son just got it for his birthday yesterday along with Forza and he is happy with it, but we also wanted to get him a second controller along with 2 player games. Can you all suggest any? He is 15 and his siblings are 16 and 17. They like COD, GTA, Elder Ring? Wand? Something like that and games like that.
TIA!

My mom used to LOVE playing video games even before she married my dad and the video game she would always play was Centipede and Mom is an expert champion of Centipede and if you were to challenge my mother to Centipede she would win. And every weekend my parents would go to the arcade and they would play video games all day and Mom would play Pac-Man and Dad would play Tron and I would be watching from my infant carrier because I was a baby and Dad was really good at Tron and he even mastered the Tron sequel himself. But when I got my Nintendo Entertainment System when I was five my dad and would spend father/daughter time trying to beat certain games and it was fun but Mom is the worst player of Super Mario Bros because each time she plays it takes Mom a long time to finish a level because Mario always loses with her and Dad and I always laugh at her when she plays it. As for me I love video games like Bejeweled and also love game show based video games as well and have a dozen game show video games. My dad likes puzzle video games and sports video games like boxing games but Dad's all-time favorite Nintendo game is Mike Tyson's Punch-Out but I can never find it anywhere. Did you ever play that video game growing up?

So, Xbox controllers can be tricky because there are so many. I think that for the new system they sell basic ones and then these high-end configurable ones. With controllers it's always good to stick to the same brand as the console manufacturer as the third-party ones can be of varying quality and sometimes lack features needed for certain games. I'd probably just get a standard Xbox controller (I believe any Xbox One controller is also compatible with Series X/S).

As for games, I am not really sure what is out on Xbox, but if they like Forza, then anything in the Need for Speed family might be good. There are lots of Call of Duty options and other shooters too.

Hi! 👋 I remember playing Banjo Kazooie as a child, as well as Super Mario, Street Fighter, Goldeneye 007 and the like. Is my inner 90s kid showing? 😋

Now I play on the Switch, but usually cozy or puzzle games. Right now I'm alternating between Animal Crossing New Horizons and Disney Dreamlight Valley. I've heard good things about Coral Island but haven't purchased yet. And family racing on Mario Kart is quite fun!

I grew up in the golden age of adventure video games, dominated by Sierra. And to this day, nothing has ever topped the original Gabriel Knight (although the Syberia series comes really close). I'll play first person, but my heart remains with traditional point and click, and I usually play at least one a month. I'm also really into city building sims, currently playing Cities Skylines and looking forward to the release of Manor Lords.

My mom LOVED the Gabriel Knight PC game series and she has every single Gabriel Knight game made and she solved each one and I always liked to watch her because Gabriel Knight was always funny and I always thought he was cute and tough with that awesome southern accent and he always reminded me of Gambit from the X-Men but the Gabriel Knight series of computer games was great and Sierra was known for creating great computer games during the 80's and 90's. Another Sierra game that was my mom's favorite was King's Quest and that series is wonderful and I believe that there were eight games in the series. And the very first King's Quest game she got was King's Quest 7 and when I first saw it the animation was wonderful and Disney-like and it was just like an animated movie and my mother loved it so much that when she solved it she started the other games in the King's Quest series and liked them too. Did you ever play King's Quest before?

I played 7 shortly after I beat the first Gabriel Knight and was looking for something else. It was fantastic! I haven't gone back and played the others, but now you've inspired me to look for them :)
