The Updated and All-Inclusive Costume Thread

Someone talk me down. Or don't. You all know how it goes in here.

I need to finish my castle-skirt outfit. I haven't embroidered since I was a teenager (but I remember the basics) but I'm considering hand-embroidering the park icons onto my hat for this race. Like this. The only one that would give me any trouble is the tree because of the thickness.

And I think I want to put some sort of quote on the shirt. Front only? Back only (because of the bib)? Both, and split it if it's a longer one? I have a few friends locally with cricuts, but I don't know what all goes into that and putting HTV onto a tech-fabric shirt. Or design/font stuff. (Maybe this is too much, especially since I'm under 3 weeks before we leave AND it's the holidays?) I love the song they used with the Happily Ever After fireworks, so I was considering something from that...

If you have time and it's not going to stress you out, I say embroider away! It'll also look retro, which goes with the race theme.

I have a Cricut and applying a quote with HTV or infusible ink is easy peasy as long as you don't get too fiddly with the font. Tech material is better than cotton when it comes to that. You can also most likely use a Cricut design to apply your icons design to the hat if you decide not to embroider it. (I say most likely because it depends on the size and material of the hat.)

I would put the quote on the back of the shirt as more of your fellow runners will likely see it there. And I like the "Spark a Dream" quote for your Figment costume for sure! If it's for the castle-skirt outfit, I'd go with "Every Wish".

I was thinking about going a Pooh (red shirt, no bottoms) but I was afraid I'd be kicked out / banned for life / arrested.
Well, considering how pale my husband is, people would probably think he's trying for Donald but with a red shirt LOL (apologies in advance for blinding people with the glare from our stark white legs on marathon day! Maybe I should find some self-tanner LOL).

For whatever reason, this made me think about an embroidery version of Squid Game's - Dalgona episode (please don't let me get the tree!) LOL.

I think it looks very cool but I would probably try doing it on scrap fabric first, to see how time consuming / frustrating it is, and how visible it would be.

Yeah I just scrapped the idea about 10min ago when I found a patch on etsy that I love. AND she said she's shipping stuff tomorrow (I messaged before I bought it since I know some sellers only ship a couple times per month) so I should have it in plenty of time.
The decisions fly fast and furious in my brain. 🤣

I know it's very late in the game, but I would not have understood the bottom of you was Donald without the explanation. I guess I was expecting more intermixing of the two characters ( I.e. Donald dressed as anger or vice versa). I'm not trying to be negative, just wanted to provide some feedback in case there are some details you could add to make it more clear. Maybe a duck bill? Or something blue to represent Donald's shirt/hat?

Following up on this to say that I've found some yellow foam and am going to attempt to craft a duck bill to add to the Anger headband. I also picked up a package of white feathers that I can glue to the headband or possibly use on some cooling arm sleeves if I feel like I need even more. (I'll post pics if I'm successful.). Wish me luck!

This sounds amazing!

I vote back because you’ve got enough space for the bib on your shirt. If you’re going to place the bib on the skirt though, you might be able to do something front and back. If it’s a cricut idea, maybe a simple gold castle image on the front, and the quote on the back?

I like all of those quotes. I listened to the song again and this one also made me think of runDisney:
“Moving down this road we've chosen,
There's no limit to where we're going”

The cricut idea really isn’t too much, especially for someone that uses it regularly. The most time consuming part for me is taking the cricut out and putting it back when I’m finished lol. I don’t use it regularly either, so it shouldn’t be too much of an ask.

The headband ears I bought for my race costumes are here and I’m in love . I got black ears with no bow for Sorcerer Mickey, and I think it’s going to be fine. If I have extra time after completing the rest of my costumes and I’m feeling adventurous, I can attempt to make a mini sorcerer hat out of craft foam or felt for the center (highly unlikely, but maybe). I just need to get lightweight rope to put around my waist and I’ll have one costume complete. 3 more to go for MW… :rolleyes1

I really need to get these costumes going, but I’m having trouble finding tanks in the colors I want. I keep searching online, but as it gets closer I get more concerned about shipping times. I want a good tech material tank that I’ll be comfortable running in for any distance, but the color options have been pretty scarce. :badpc:

Anyone looking for running bottoms to bound in or for costumes, Bolder Athletic (formerly Sparkle Skirts) is having a massive sale with a ton of their inventory at $22 and $40. NO affiliation, I just wear their stuff a lot and got the email today. They are usually at the Expo so you might even be able to pick up if you need something for MW.

Yesterday I sewed a satin circle skirt to go under my castle dottie. (And then ran out of elastic so I couldn't finish the one for my purple skirt.) I'm going to do a test run with it today, but I'm having MASSIVE static cling issues with the underskirt and my thighs. Any tips on alleviating this other than rubbing a dryer sheet on it or spraying it with something?

Hmmm... maybe try tacking it with a few hand stitches in strategic spots to the dottie skirt? I've never worn one so not sure if that's heavy enough to keep the under skirt pulled away. Sadly, satin is super prone to static, but Florida humidity should help. My W&D 5K costume had a few satin layers and I had no static issues while I was down there for the race.

A dryer sheet or hairspray will help temporarily, but you'd need to take that with you to hit the skirt again when static builds back up. Another option would be remaking it from a different fabric, but ugh.

I've been working to finish up the layers for my Disgust/Mickey costume for the first half of the full marathon. I sewed a simple circle skirt and waistband, added the D for the belt, and painted on the design yesterday. I laid wrapping paper on my bathroom floor and used a toilet paper roll to "stamp" modern Mickey heads instead of the amoeba design.

20221216_140330.jpg 20221216_121246.jpg

I also stamped the top and neck scarf (photo is midway through that process) and I think it all turned out pretty cute! I did manage to mess up the tank top badly enough to replace it with a cheap one I found online, but the color is WAY off. (You can see it in the bottom of the shot of the skirt photo.) So I will be going on a wild goose chase today to try and find one the right color. If all else fails, I'll go back to Joann for more of the green fabric and just make one. ::sigh::

I'd prefer not to spend a lot since this whole thing is likely to end up in a discard pile or the trash if DH can't meet me in the park to hand it all off when I make the switch to Joy.

What are your thoughts on a black shirt to provoke more Mickey vibes? Guessing that will be easier to find.

Interesting idea!
Edit to say this took me down a whole rabbit hole with the marathon costumes as they really weren't very mashed-up at all. DH and I did some brainstorming and came up with a couple of details that I think will cinch it. THANK YOU @GollyGadget for the inspiration!

So, for Disgust/Minnie, I'm keeping the skirt (posted above) but going with a black top and adding white polka dots. I'll add a Minnie bow to the light weight ears that I'll wear on top of the Disgust wig. AND I'll add the black tail I'm wearing for Pluto/Fear in the 5K to both costumes for the full.

For Joy/Mickey, I'll ditch the bow and just wear the plain black ears over my own blue hair. I'll keep the mouse tail, and I'll add a wide belt to the Joy dress in red with big white buttons. I think we've got it!

Let me know if you need any help with the serger. I’m far from an expert, but have managed to reach myself to sew clothes for my kids and now workout clothes too.
Thank you for your offer @accm

I don’t know when my next battle with the serger will be but will take any advice you can give! I also understand if you are busy preparing for MW, my costumes are only for April.

The library has these machines.
E9ED43BA-64C6-4D53-98FE-0741E258A83D.jpeg
I have 4-way stretch fabric, Polyester thread and stretch needles.
93A165DA-44BB-4EDB-AC33-17A372EADA82.jpeg
The objective is to sew the following stitches.
A767EC9A-E2E5-45C4-8904-8955418A5A15.jpeg
I understand that this stitch is not feasible with the tool at my disposition.

The first time I tried to use the serger, my thread was getting cut.
The second time, I use the thread that came with the machine for testing purposes. Here are the results:

I don’t seem to be getting the settings right. Here are my questions:
  • What am I doing wrong?
  • What settings for all these knobs do you suggest?
  • Am I trying to do the right stitch, the three thread super-stretch?
  • Is there a way to make the flap (overedge?) a bit smaller? In other words, the stitch less wide?
  • Where do I position the fabric with respect to the cutter?
  • Is the fact that I did not switch the needles to my stretch needles a problem?
  • Do I need to use the stitch finger B?
  • Can I do the border stitch on the same machine or do I need to switch to the sewing machine?

I actually have the same serger! The first thing I'd check is that your machine is threaded correctly. There are lots of videos online that can walk you through it, but this is what mine looks like (don't mind the mess, I'm racing against the clock to get everything ready by Friday):

I don’t seem to be getting the settings right. Here are my questions:
  • What am I doing wrong?
  • What settings for all these knobs do you suggest? I would start with everything at 4, lower the stitch length to between 1 and 2 (knob on the right), and increase your differential feed to between 1.5 and 2 (up and down adjustment on the right). Stretchy fabrics are hard because if you don't have your settings right, you'll snap your thread. I find lowering the stitch length is the best way to prevent that from happening.
  • Am I trying to do the right stitch, the three thread super-stretch? I would probably do use a 4 thread overlock stitch instead, since that's generally a stronger stitch
  • Is there a way to make the flap (overedge?) a bit smaller? In other words, the stitch less wide? There's a knob on the left hand side of the machine that sets the width of your seam allowance. I always leave mine at 6 (1/4"). You could make it smaller, but I'm honestly not sure how that would affect everything else
  • Where do I position the fabric with respect to the cutter? Are you using a pattern or did you self draft? All patterns will tell you the seam allowance, or if it has no seam allowance and you need to add it. Most of the patterns I use have a 3/8" seam allowance, so I generally align the edge of my fabric to be lined up with the outside of the blade.
  • Is the fact that I did not switch the needles to my stretch needles a problem? Most likely. The stretch needle will definitely help
  • Do I need to use the stitch finger B? I'm not sure what you mean by this
  • Can I do the border stitch on the same machine or do I need to switch to the sewing machine? You'll need the sewing machine to hem

Something else that I'm not sure if it could be impacting your sewing is the threads. I generally use serger spools. I looked at the manual, and I think if you're using regular spools of thread, you need to put these little caps on top of it:
1671373948237.png

If you try these and send me a picture of your stitch, I can help you troubleshoot with tensions to adjust.
