The Updated and All-Inclusive Costume Thread

I tested my 5K costume this week. This is the Fear/Pluto mashup. I'm walking so not too concerned about it, but it's all comfy. I'll add face makeup for nose and whiskers.

Since I'll be using the tail for the Marathon too, I'm going to add snaps so I don't have to rely on safety pins to keep it in place on all three costumes.

I actually have the same serger! The first thing I'd check is that your machine is threaded correctly. There are lots of videos online that can walk you through it, but this is what mine looks like (don't mind the mess, I'm racing against the clock to get everything ready by Friday):

Something else that I'm not sure if it could be impacting your sewing is the threads. I generally use serger spools. I looked at the manual, and I think if you're using regular spools of thread, you need to put these little caps on top of it:

If you try these and send me a picture of your stitch, I can help you troubleshoot with tensions to adjust.
Battle with serger #3 underway… I think that I will successfully tame that beast!!!

Thank you 😊

Do you use the serger for the seams at the bottom of the shorts you make or a different sowing machine? If you use the serger, which settings/stitch type is it?

For the super stretch seams that I succeeded doing yesterday, I used:
- 2 needles that came with the machine (not my Stretch needles)
- Overedge cutting width #7
- Both needles thread tension #4
- Lower looper tension #2
- Stitch length #2.5
- Differential feed control 1.5

Is that what you use as well?

I was able to reconstruct a running T-shirt for DD… No bottom border for now. She is testing it today to see if it chafes.

So I decided against a costume for this year, but only spending a few minutes checking if I could get this graphic printed on a high-quality running shirt in time. 😅

I love all the creativity in this thread, and look forward to seeing all of your great costumes in person!

That sounds pretty close to what I set my machine for, with some adjustments depending on actual fabric. The main difference is that my cutting width is generally set to 6. Hopefully the test went well!

Great, thanks for the validation 👍🏻 If the cutting width is 6, will there be loose threads or will the entire seam will be less wide? I would like the seams to be less wide.

The test went very well and she showed her friends how her mom had adjusted a T-shirt! 😎 They did point our that the bottom border was inexistant though 😝

The seam is less wide, but the looper threads are still tight against the edge of the fabric. Honestly though, if you figured out the settings that work, I don't know that I'd mess with it for 1mm

Please do this!! I just wish they let us run in the park.... it is better than a parking lot.

No one is home to eyeball this with me, and this hat is sold out/discontinued in this color. Is this centered? I need to iron it down. 😬😬

Hard to tell from the photo - do you have a flexible tape measure? You could measure from the border of the patch to the next seam on each side.

I should be packing right now, but instead I'm tired and procrastinating, so here are photos of my finished outfits for the 10k, half, and full. I just managed to finish it this afternoon! I wish I had had time to topstitch the long sleeve crop, but it's honestly nothing short of a miracle that I even managed to finish these in time, so I'll take what I can get.
