Three Missing N.J. Children Found Dead In Trunk Of Car
Boys Missing Since Wednesday

POSTED: 7:13 am EDT June 23, 2005
UPDATED: 8:10 pm EDT June 24, 2005

Three young Camden, N.J., boys missing since Wednesday have been found dead in the trunk of an abandoned car in their neighborhood, a family member has told a local TV station.

A police briefing is imminent.

Harry Hairston, of WCAU-TV in Philadelphia, spoke with a family member, who said the car was on the property of the family of Anibal Cruz, one of the missing boys.

Police activity in that area became frenzied around 6:30 p.m., according to sources at the scene.

The families of the three Camden children made a tearful plea to the public Friday afternoon for help find their missing boys. There was a $9,000 reward and the public was invited to contribute.

The reward from the Citizens Crime Commission was for any information related to the three missing Camden children.

The mothers of the three children -- Elba Cruz, Jessica Pagan, Iraida Roman -- appeared on camera earlier Friday to ask the public to send any information about the case to police.

The three children have been identified as Anibal Cruz, 11; Daniel Agosto, 6; and Jesstin "Manny" Pagan, 5, all of Camden.

"All you guys, we love you. We want you back. We're not mad at you. Please come back. Please bring my baby back," said Jessica Pagan, mother of Jesstin "Manny" Pagan. "If you have him, please let him go, please."

"If anyone has seen the three kids, please contact that number that they gave you, "said Iraida Roman, the mother of Daniel Agosto. "We want them back home as soon as possible."

The mother of Anibal Cruz spoke in Spanish and asked for anyone with information to come forward.

During the emotional pleas, many family members, along with some officials, were in tears on the podium.

Police had been working closely with family members to track down all possible leads.

More than 100 searchers, including police officers, volunteers, firefighters, helicopters, dive teams and bloodhounds, were looking for the three children.

The children were last seen by friends and relatives playing in a yard near Bergen Avenue at around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officials said the boys were too young to have wandered very far since last being seen Wednesday evening. A river is about three blocks from the home where they were playing.

I saw this on the news. I cannot imagine (and I hope I do) the agony these poor families are going through. My heart is breaking for them.

This is SO sad. I cannot imagine what those parents are going through...to have your child missing, be searching for days, and then find them so close to home. If only... :guilty:

Can you believe that my DH was just lecturing my 11-year-old DS yesterday about getting into the trunk of the car? DS was trying to hide from DD in the trunk after I left it unlocked, planning to return to unload some things (I forgot). DH saw him and chewed him out thoroughly (I was next). DS thinks that a tragedy like this cannot possibly happen to someone as old as him. He thinks it can only happen to 'little' kids. :guilty: I cannot believe I was so stupid as to leave the trunk unlocked either.

Oh man, I was just telling my dh that I hope these kids are found alive. I didn't get a chance to hear the news on tv yet. I'm sick over this.........How very, very sad.

The bodies were discovered shortly before 7 p.m. by the father of one of the boys.A neighbor, Carmen Cilla, said she saw David Agosto open the trunk of the maroon Toyota and collapse to his knees screaming. Police rushed to the scene and immediately cordoned off the property with yellow crime scene tape, draping white sheets over the tape to shield the car from view.
Poor Guy.

I suggest you march DS right in front of the tv to show him that it can & DID happen to an 11 yr old. Seeing pictures of the other boy, & having it personalized & made real for him, may really make it hit home. That DH was not just lecturing him. (Otherwise, I'm glad your situation turned out better than this one.:) )

OMG, how tragic! I'm guessing the kids were playing and locked themselves in the trunk. I'm sorry, I haven't been following this story.

My heart goes out to those families. :sad1:

I was almost in tears when I saw the breaking news update... The aunt of one of the victims said that the car had been searched before this but was empty.. I'd hate to think something more sinister has taken place but it really does sound like they were playing around & got themselves locked in...

Heartbreaking :guilty:

I remember a similar thing happened in our province about 2 years ago. Kids were playing hide and seek and locked themselves in a chest in the attic. They died as well :guilty:

This makes me wonder if they saw all the police and thought they were in trouble so decided to "hide" until the police went away. What a shame for those families. My heart breaks for them and for what happened to their babies.

So heartbreaking. I am praying for the families.

They showed a heartbreaking video of the one dad opening the trunk of the car and discovering the boys. It was horrible.
