Right now The Force Awakens is tracking very closely with Avatar and with the next week being a holiday for most kids I don't really expect that to change. In terms of calendar and competition this is almost a replay of Avatar in fact. So that does make a comparison interesting. However...
I've never understood the dislike for Avatar. I haven't watched it because it didn't really speak to me, but neither did Titanic, or Cider House Rules or No Country for Old Men or many, many other movies. Turns out not all movies are made for me personally. Who'd a guessed? So I agree with you, this really ought not to be personal.
Now on to the comparisons I do find interesting, numbers:
The Force Awakens is now already the biggest money maker domestically of all the Star Wars movies if you separate out the special editions and sits at #11 on the unadjusted all time domestic chart. If Box Office Mojo's predictions are right it will be in the #5 slot after Sunday and will beat Star Wars: A New Hope's cumulative total. It will be $80 million away from Jurassic World at that point and will have got there a full two weeks faster than JW. To me that means JW's and Titanic fall for sure, maybe within another week. That leaves only Avatar domestically and once you've overtaken Titanic you're within $100 million of it so. Keep in mind that in its first week TFA raked in almost three times as much as Avatar in its first week and on its weekest day so far it has managed 2.5 times Avatar's box office. Even if it drops substantially I don't see any way Avatar's domestic record survives.
Internationally is much harder to predict. A lot hinges on China. Avatar did big business ($200 million) in China. Star Wars doesn't have the brand recognition in China that it does elsewhere, but Disney have been pumping the PR heavily so it's too soon to write it off there. Avatar made 75% of its money overseas. Right now Star Wars is making just over 50%, but it hasn't even opened in China yet...
