The star wars spoiler thread

I'm kinda wondering what will happen AFTER it stops breaking record? As in will it have two screens at every theater making solid money till march like titanic and avatar did?

Yeah. There's a certain amount of been there that Avatar and Titanic don't face. A larger segment of the population doesn't do Star Wars - because. You didn't have that with the others.

But remember this doesn't have China yet. Everything it has done was without the #1/2 movie market in the world. My guess is it begins to stall as soon as this weekend starting to flatten out and then China breathes in new life and the "see it one last time" marketing starts up mid-January to try and push it over the top.

Early Christmas returns are 40-50 million (previous record was 27 million for Christmas Day).

Revised numbers are at the top end after a strong late night showing. $49.34 million. It's over $440 going into Saturday so $500 million today or early tomorrow and $1 billion total likely this weekend.

I'd say $1 billion is guaranteed this weekend given the overseas has consistently been more than 50% of total box office. I also wouldn't write off it's long term prospects either. It hasn't opened in China at all yet and while it may not beat Jurassic World there I think we can still assume tens of millions in box office. I also think the re-watchability factor is greater than people are assuming.

Disney could also very easily game things a little by doing some sort of re-release in February

They were over 820,000,000 last night.

i think the the domestic record is broken and TFA should go over 800 million domestic the tough part will be winning the internationally

for the rocrd i could care less if it does or does not its a huge hit and thats what matters

My thoughts:

I really enjoyed it, saw it once, plan to go watch it again soon.

The new characters are awesome, Daisy and John show great chemistry.

Yes, the death star 3.0 but I'm not sure what other massive weapon they could devise, unless it's something like a virus, etc. which isn't very Star Wars like.

I do think there should have been more back-story explaining what happened between 6 and 7.

People keep talking about Rey still possibly being Han and Leia's daughter but never mentioned, but why can't she just be Leia's daughter if they're separated? Then who is the father, if anyone important?

I do think there should have been more back-story explaining what happened between 6 and 7.

I think they'll keep the backstory in the comics and novels, which is where it belongs. After all Star Wars just threw us in at the deep end with no real backstory at all.

This certainly deserves to do better than Avatar

Avatar was some technical pizazz that made good use of 3D resurgence, it was up against NOTHING ( like titanic...the perfect storm) and it was from a cinematography standpoint...unrivaled.

I'm not a fan of avatar...it has no chance as a franchise...people went and saw it and forgot it the minute they went to the potty on the way out...

BUT...this movie is completely different. It's milking old friends to make its billion(s).

I'm not sure the face off/spite is necessary here.

Interesting conversation at Beat Buy today. For whatever reason they were showing Revenge of the Sith - and a dad and 2 kids walk up...

Kid 1 (12 I guess)- it's the REAL Star Wars!
Kid 2 (7-8 years) the new one is REAL too!
Dad - they we all real.
Kid 1 - Yeah, but this is from the originals!

There was so much in that conversation... In a way though I think that's a big part of Star Wars. They've done what no one else has done. Each generation has their own trilogy and story. Maybe it's repeated. Maybe it's connected. But each generation has a tie to it.

Imagine growing up when you saw Star Wars if someone said to you your kids would have more attachment to Anakin Skywalker than Luke... You would've thought they were nuts.

Some of them seemed a hell of a lot more "real" than others...

For instance: the "scoundrel" scene between ford and the artist formerly known as Carrie fisher in 1980...

Now compare that to "I love you anakin...I DEEPLY love you" before Maximus and his squeeze went into the gladiator ring to fight the monsters from Harry Potter in "episode II"

...dad was wrong - if you're honest.

At the end of the day, they are projecting the Force Awakens to over double what Disney paid for Lucasfilm from all the revenue streams

Whoa now! I agree with almost everything here, but one of the greatest recent rip-offs in Oscar history is Titanic over L.A. Confidential. That was a pure example of bells & whistles impressing the judges if there ever was one.

Right now The Force Awakens is tracking very closely with Avatar and with the next week being a holiday for most kids I don't really expect that to change. In terms of calendar and competition this is almost a replay of Avatar in fact. So that does make a comparison interesting. However...

I've never understood the dislike for Avatar. I haven't watched it because it didn't really speak to me, but neither did Titanic, or Cider House Rules or No Country for Old Men or many, many other movies. Turns out not all movies are made for me personally. Who'd a guessed? So I agree with you, this really ought not to be personal.

Now on to the comparisons I do find interesting, numbers:

The Force Awakens is now already the biggest money maker domestically of all the Star Wars movies if you separate out the special editions and sits at #11 on the unadjusted all time domestic chart. If Box Office Mojo's predictions are right it will be in the #5 slot after Sunday and will beat Star Wars: A New Hope's cumulative total. It will be $80 million away from Jurassic World at that point and will have got there a full two weeks faster than JW. To me that means JW's and Titanic fall for sure, maybe within another week. That leaves only Avatar domestically and once you've overtaken Titanic you're within $100 million of it so. Keep in mind that in its first week TFA raked in almost three times as much as Avatar in its first week and on its weekest day so far it has managed 2.5 times Avatar's box office. Even if it drops substantially I don't see any way Avatar's domestic record survives.

Internationally is much harder to predict. A lot hinges on China. Avatar did big business ($200 million) in China. Star Wars doesn't have the brand recognition in China that it does elsewhere, but Disney have been pumping the PR heavily so it's too soon to write it off there. Avatar made 75% of its money overseas. Right now Star Wars is making just over 50%, but it hasn't even opened in China yet...

Just went to see it last night for the 2nd time and I have to say…I appreciated it even more. And again, what I keep harping on is the acting. The level and quality of acting in this movie is so well done. Kudos for Abrams getting that much out of his cast.

One thing that I have a question about is this Starkiller Base. Does anyone know if it is a mobile station like the Death Star was or was it a planet/moon that actually orbited a star?

It would have to be mobile as it actually destroys the star when it sucks up the energy to fire.

totally agree with this
domestically the record will be TFA no question about it the question now is world wide gross which will be tougher
Star Wars history suggest it wont because its earnings typically are domestic driven usually 45% domestic and 55% international where as other top grossing movies are 30% to 70%
in the end im guessing 850 million domestic and 1.4 Billion internationally
personally i like both Avatar and TFA and could care less which one earns the most
