The snickers superbowl ad was pulled

Yeah thats what I was thinking, the ad man, the ad company and the exec at Mars that went with it probably all are getting canned.

I'm not the least bit homophobic, for I feel if you want to be gay, be gay, its a free country, but if you are going to do a gay commercial or whatever, at least use attractive people. I wasn't offended because I'm anti gay, I was offended because watching 2 ugly fat white guys kiss is just a turn off gay or straight.

Now if it would have been say Christina Augulera and Brittney Spears kissing over a snickers bar, I'd be munching on one right now.:thumbsup2

Or Matt Damon and that charming young fellow from Prison Break -- now that's a candy eating scene to catch.

Who reaches out and starts biting off the end of a Snickers bar in mid-air? It wasn't even plausible.

That's what I was wondering. I only saw a clip on The View, so I was wondering if there was some sort of build-up as to why the one guy would just start munching on the other guy's candy bar. :confused3 Whatever it's intentions, it was just a gross commercial especially with them ripping thier hair off. Blech.

I actually laughed when I saw it. I thought ripping off the chest hair was more disturbing then the kiss.

Sorry but I dont see anything wrong with it, (altho i didnt see the online thing with the wrench thing) Most people who are not gay will probably have that same reaction, I would probably eeeww too if I had accidentally kissed a woman, (not that I would grab anyone's snickers from their mouths, gross) but it doesnt mean that I am homophobic or anti gay or im going to start beating gay people. I mean really this is more PC junk ruling our lives. Was it stupid, probably, but i dont think it was going to spark a riot of beating gay people, c'mon!....

Gosh - I feel like a Jerk. I only saw about 15 minutes of the SB and during that time this commercial came on and I thought it was funny and I laughed at it.

I didn't really think about the phobic nature of it until this thread came out???????

DH laughed too. I just thought he was wierd for finding it funny, not homophobic

I didn't think it was homophobic. I think the concept (would that guy really try and eat it out of the other guys mouth) was absurd, but I think the reaction of the guys after they "kiss" was pretty damn typical of 2 straight men in America.

Heterosexual men tend to get skeeved out at the thought of kissing other men, so I don't think it's homophobic. I just think it's a dumb commercial.

Yep. I was skeeved....I don't know what it means, but I know what it feels like!:scared:

In the most literal sense of the word, the ad was homophobic. :) But in the common usage, absolutely not.

I didn't think it was funny, though.

And I disagree that anyone will be fired. They did nothing wrong, and they'll get more press out of this than they would have if these groups weren't protesting.

I thought it was stupid, but I told DH "There will be great crying and gnashing of teeth over THAT one tomorrow". :lmao:

As for people being fired, it's entirely possible that their job ended when the commercial was done anyway.

I'm shocked at the number of people who dimiss what this commercial was obviously trying to do. I wonder if people would feel it was OK if a commercial showed two guys getting oil on their faces and then launched into some black stereotypes.

I don't think it should have been banned, but I do think it was sad they even thought it was OK put out there to represent their company.

That just goes to show how different people can see the exact same thing very differently. I didn't think it launched into any homosexual stereotypes, rather I saw it as poking fun at the "manly men" that accidentally "kiss" each other. I didn't see it as being any different than the Seinfeld episode where George was concerned about having a male massueuse, and his anguish over the possibility that "it moved" (his words, not mine :rotfl: ) during his massage.

Oddly enough I was thinking of that exact same episode because of another thread where somebody was trying fly the gay choice argument. Pretty funny stuff, but IMO homophobic just the same.

Exactly. "Homophobia" didn't even enter my mind until I opened this thread...I personally didn't associate the ad with homosexuals, I associated it with the 'average guy' trying to be ‘manly’ who the ad was humorously making fun of. I swear people these days look for things they can claim was ‘offensive’ or ‘discriminatory’ in any way they can find (or make up). I assume you didn’t like the ‘ESL class” one? I thought it was hilarious.

The Mars company received 100's of emails and calls from vendors stating they were removing all Mars products from their machines because of that tasteless add and demanded it be pulled!!!! Thats the power of the people right there. It wasnt a homophobic commercial, it was a dumb commercial. Gotta question that word--"homophobic" . It means being afraid of homosexuals correct? I have 2 of them in my family, i dont agree with the lifestyle they have chosen , but i am not "afraid" of them. Is anyone actually afraid of them? Doubt it!

It is one of the most incorrectly used words I can think of. It’s amazing how quick the left will throw out ‘homophobic’ for things that clearly do not fit the word’s definition.

My sentiments exactly.

And I thought the ESL one was funny too, I'm incredibly un-PC, and I think that people would be much happier if they stopped looking for veiled insults around every corner. There are plenty of nasty things in plain sight, why go looking for more?

Literally, homophobia is the fear that you yourself are gay. Not that you are afraid of other people who are gay. :)

But we use it to mean a dislike for gay people, or outward meanness toward them. I don't think the commercial displayed that, obviously others do.

I thought it was dumb and in no way affected my desire to eat Snickers bars. Would not have remembered it (much less the Snickers) unless I'd seen it here. But I love the Cavemen commercials, and have no idea what they are even selling. Rarely do I remember the product advertised!

i was thinking the same thing!!

I just thought it was poking fun at two "macho" men and I didn't see the undertones of the homophobic stuff. I guess I just wasn't digging enough. I was more mortified that one of the men pulling out chest hair looked like he had his ma hair groomed into a shape, lol. I'm glad to see I'm not the only ones that didn't see more into this.
