I really could have done without reading this post. Seems like a common problem at WDW and resorts. That would make for a MISERABLE vacation for me personally. I am scared of snakes, rightfully so:scared: Why aren't they trying to control this if there is such a predominant and legit issue with them. That seems to me bad for business, especially since this recent post. Doesn't sit well with me. :sad1:

The snakes live there. They were there long before Walt bought the land. The vast majority of them are harmless to humans, and the snakes keep the population of other "less than desireable" creatures down. The snakes don't like people any more than we like them, so don't over-worry about them.

It's a swamp!! There is nothing to be done. Actually, the snakes are an asset. They help keep the rodent population down, so Mickey and Minnie can remain the 'big cheeses'!! Sorry, couldn't resist. But they really are good for the control of less desirable elements. Disney does a pretty terrific job of keeping their guests safe. My advice? Stay on the walkways, keep your eyes open. Believe me...those snakes are a lot more afraid of you than you are of them. They are harmless. But, can we talk about the alligators? Now, that's something to be concerned about!!!!

I have not read the "snake post" recently but have read others like it on this board. I am deathly afraid of snakes and if I saw one at Disney would probably die on the spot. That said, I have been to WDW 14 times and I have never seen one at Disney. I also don't look for them. Don't let it ruin your experience at Disney.

Snakes are just a part of living in the South. We live in Louisiana and we see snakes all times of the year. There was a bright green grass snake beside our garbage can on New Year's Day even though the temperature was only 47.

Snakes, in general, are as equally afraid of humans as the humans are of them. Well......in my case......there is no way they can be 'cause I am terrified of snakes!!!!!!

Anyway, I wouldn't let the previously posted incident scare you off.

Have a great trip, Lisa

I've been to WDW 17 times in teh last 16 years, staying both on-site and off0site, and spending plenty of time in Kissimmee/St. Cloud and greater Orlando, and I've never seen a single snake anywhere.

I've seen lizards, gators, and rabbits, and I've even seen a couple of wild cats that actually live inside the WDW and Universal parks. But no snakes.

Don't go lookin' for 'em, and ya won't see 'em.

I've been to Disney more times than I can count, and I've never seen a snake there. I live near Orlando, and have seen a few snakes, all non-poisonous ones fortunately. Snakes are quite common, especially in swampy areas and woody areas. Disney has some of both. If you are snake phobic, stick to well lighted walkways, and pay attention to your surroundings. That is your best defense. Given the choice, the snake will go the other way. Most of the snakes I've seen around our neighborhood have been hiding in landscaping and come out when the bushes are trimmed or the yard mowed. There was the one in the street that we ran over with the car (not intentionally, but if it will cross the road during rush hour, well, we can't be responsible for our actions!), but other than that, nothing major.

Why aren't they trying to control this if there is such a predominant and legit issue with them?

Most people don't have an issue.

Most people realize there's nothing to be done.

It certainly isn't hurting business.

Chances are you will never see a snake, if you do see one, it will not harm you. So try to relax.
:)

You have nothing to be afraid of until you see a very poisonous black mambo snake in Namibia standing straight up (they can raise 75%) of their body poking their head into a birds nest as you're standing a mere 3 feet away.

If you're going to a swampy area, you have to expect you will see swamp things. Chances are, it's your run of the mill garden or grass snake that's more scared of you than you are of it. It won't bite you or wrap it's self around your ankle or your child. It's going to slither as far away from you as possible.

Are you speaking from experience??

I've been to WDW 12 times and have never seen a snake...and that's counting 2 times in Fort Wilderness Cabins.

Disney does remove potentially dangerous snakes. The vast majority of snakes at WDW are utterly harmless, the only way they could hurt you is if you tripped over one and fell. :teeth:

From Florida Museum of Natural History’s Guide to Florida’s Venomous Snakes:

Although 45 species of snakes are found in Florida, only the 6 listed here are venomous and a danger to humans.

You probably won't even see one, so forget about it. :)

Are you speaking from experience??

Yes I am! I was in the Namib desert in mid-November and I was so scared I just kept backing up and our Guide kept saying "no sudden moves guys, no sudden moves..."

It was really quite the thing to see!

Really..... I have come to the conclusion that some people either live in a bubble or they simply believe that they are the only living creatures allowed to roam the earth and live! I can't say that I love snakes but God put everything here for a reason and we should learn to live with it, just be aware of your surroundings..........heck I live in A huge metropolitan area in Florida and never in a million years did I think I would see a coyote here, last week I did, and you know I let him do his thing and just watched in awe at how animals have adapted around us who have invaded their homes.
Oh besides snakes, we have cockroaches the size of birds, alligators and if you are the WL you may even see the coons, the deer, the wild turkeys and some ducks in the pool!

Exactly! :thumbsup2
Besides, the snakes eat the bugs, especially roaches.

Saw one by the path coming from the Asia part of Animal Kingdom a few years back. People were actually coming up to look at it like it was animatronic. :rotfl:

Had one in my kitchen back in the summer, Copperhead, btw. No clue how it got in except that we live on a lake on a very wooded lot. As Jeff Foxworthy says...............

You might be a redneck if you've ever had to kill a wild creature in your home! :lmao:

Seriously though, we also hate snakes, DH can't even stand to see them on TV so you can imagine how traumatic this was.

Or some people have a phobia. Have you heard the term? It's an irrational fear. Some people have fears (possibly brought on by a traumatic experience) and they can't control that.

In June of 2005 the family and I were walking back to the Contemporary from Magic Kingdom one night and at about the half way point between the two a copperhead crossed the sidewalk right in front of us. We notified a castmember about it and since it was a poisonus snake he said he would notify the proper personel about it but it was probably long gone by the time they got there.

Wow, what a frightening experience. Black mambas are extremely aggressive and have been known to charge at people.
