Day two at the Sagamore (October 5, 2002)

Cast: Me, Gail (25)
My Grandpa (70)
My Grandma (72)

I got up at nine and was showered and the three of us were out to town by 10 AM. We drove to the main stip, but it is walkable distance... a long walk, but walkable... We ate breakfast at this small mom and pop restaurant andi t was yum! We walked up and down the main drag (9N) shopping, but mostly looking in all the shops. They had some antique stores that held some older items. It was kind of cool and allowed for bonding between my grandparents and myself, learning about their generation... I mean I learned what Farina was due to our milling around these shops. We took some pictures in fron of the Sagamore sign and there was a bar across the street. This guy, who was drinking at noon, jumped out of the bar and ran over to sit next to me in front of the Sagamore sign. He was very strange to say the least.

We drove up to the main building of the hotel and walked around and really saw the grounds which were very well kept, but had these little flags all over the place like when a company sprays for bugs. We peeked into Mister Brown's Pub and decided we would have dinner there later in the evening. Afternoon Tea was taking place on the Verandah. We did not take part as we are not tea drinkers, but the Tea looked interesting. The cost is $18 per person and you get some finger sandwiches in addition to different blends of tea. There was a piano player providing background music. We walked back to our lodge and found a small hut with an ice machine/holder with bags of ice for the guests to take back to the room (no ice machine) and a pepsi machine for $2.00 a can!!! Now there is a Tops supermarket immediately before you turn to go into the Sagamore, so I cannot imagine who would buy a can of soda for two bucks! ANyway, we grabbed a bag of ice and went back to the room. My grandparents took a nap while I watched some TV.

They got up and freshened up a bit and we got ready for appetisers on the Verandah consisting of a raw bar... oysters, clams, shrimp, and sushi. While getting ready, my grandfather missed his little dog so much he started talking to a squirrel outside our room in his baby talk for the dog. It was quite funny.

We went back to the main building to the Verandah for the raw bar. There were a ton of people milling about and come to find out they we waiting for a wedding reception to start, so they were hanging out in the verandah taking up tables from people who wanted to eat some oysters. I had really jumbo, jumbo shimp cocktail and my grandparents had oysters. My grandmother was "in heaven" with the oysters. It reid one and it had not real taste to me and had a very rubbery texture. In he future I'll stick to the shrimp. We finished up and headed over to Mister Browns for dinner. The plan was to have appetisers at the raw bar and dinner at Mr B's. I had Chicken Quesidiallas, which actually was an apptiser, but the smaller portion was just right for my fullness scale. My Grandpa had Jumbo SHrimp stuffed with really good crab meat! Grandma had salmon, which she said was really good. The pub is decorated rather rustically, kinda like WL Whisepering Canyon CAfe, with really low cielings. There were a few large groups watching college football and they were being a little loud and that gave my Grandmother a headache. Since she wasn't feeling that well, I got my cheesecake to go and we headed back to the room.

When we returned, our room was rather warm beacause we left the heat on, but I was really craving a fire, so we turned on the air conditioning and lit up the fireplace. The Sagamore supplies each fireplace with a basket of wood and some matches as well as a fire starter mini-log. It was so nice to sit back watching a movie with my Grandfather and smelling thatwoodburning campfire smell. I wrote a few more trip memories I wanted to remember and housekeeping came to our room around 9:30 to turn down the beds. We declined the service and they still gave us Godiva chocolates for our bedtime candy. As I settled into bed, I noticed my voicemail light on my cell phone. It was a message from my best friend Jenne, who had her baby three weeks early. I was so bummed I missed it. After all, I am a labor and delivery nurse at the hospital she delivered at. Thankfully she and baby Haley are doing well. I have already promised to take her to WDW for her third birthday!

In all, Saturday was a much better day!

Part three tomorrow and final thoughts...

I have to say I like your trip report. Friends went to the Sagamore with a 3, 2 and newborn plus grandparents this time last year staying in the condos. They had a really good time also...so good that my friends went back on their own 2 weeks later. Your start was a little disappointing but it nice to see it pick up.

As an aside...I find your comments on seafood hilarious. I guess the more unusual seafood is an acquired taste.

Isn't that just yummy that they leave you the Godiva chocolates without turning down the beds? My kids were in heaven!! lol And, no, I didn't tip them. I really didn't even think about it at the time. Did you?

Glad to hear that Mr. Browns was good. I don't think I would consider going back if none of their restaurants were not any good!

Look forward to your next report!
