The Running Thread--2024

I would be remiss to not mention that Haley Batten who was raised in PC took silver in Mountain Bike Cross Country, overcoming a flat tire, even.

It is the highest finish for an American ever in mountain biking

Great comeback.....well worth the fine for the feed zone infraction (although technically, there is supposedly no specific rule that states you have to take drink/feed if you ride through the zone.) I don't think the amount of time she may have gained provided a material advantage. If it had, then Puck (who I adore) would have had a better case. And Tom Pidcock's win was just awesome to watch--another comeback from a flat. He was so calm in the pit waiting for a wheel change, and that last pass!

Which really says something about the quality of the runners, but also about shoe tech.

There’s going to be a reckoning with shoe tech at some point (there has to be, right?!) but I’m not sure when that will happen.

The majority were wearing the Nike Victory 2, which is a pretty minimal track spike. Air zoom pod in the front, some zoomx foam in the heel. I would say that the benefit of the super shoes comes from faster recovery during training letting athletes go out harder without the wear and tear on their bodies.

And maybe the track is faster, bouncier??

Can anyone explain the finish line photo from the men’s 100m? Because I look at it and don’t understand the finish order. But I also have 0 experience with these type of pictures, so I’m just looking for like a “how to read this pic” sort of thing.

I think they go by the position of the torso to the line.

Here’s the official finish line photo. First part of the runner’s torso that touches the line is what counts. The red lines show each runner’s chest.

Ok. That makes a lot more sense then because Thompson’s foot was definitely there first and it’s just like 🤔🤔🤔. Especially when they don’t really explain to the masses that it’s the torso and not just crossing the line with a foot.

The orange shoe isn’t Thompson’s foot, it’s the other US runner’s. I thought it was at first until someone pointed it out, and then I was like… oh yeah, the Jamaican guy has different color shoes!

What a race.

I watched the race with my family last night and they were just as confused. When I nonchalantly told them it was the torso that mattered, I realized it wasn't common sense. I just watch A LOT of track and field.

The torso is why you see a lot of folks lean at the finish.

Yeah, I get the "leaning" thing as a general principal....I just figured it was like a 'no arms' thing so that you can't just reach forward to win/gain places by breaking the line, but I would have certainly thought that a foot or leg would count. Just makes things that much more interesting! I wasn't impressed that the announcer was calling a winner when things were clearly as close as they were.

Also: GO TEAM on us not spoiling things on here! I'm very impressed with our ability to save the excitement for others.

During Rio, when I was the only runner in my group of friends, I got all sorts of questions about the woman who "flew" across the finish line to beat Allyson Felix to get gold. Mostly they wanted to know if she'd be DQ'd, but no, it was legal. Her torso go across the line first, as much as I didn't like it.

Training opinions wanted. (Cross-posting from my training journal for more eyeballs, so sorry if you already saw this.)

I missed my 3 mile M pace run yesterday due to delayed travels and a power outage and massive storm. Should I try to "make it up" today? Normally I would not, but it is only week two of my Dopey plan, which is also light due to D23 travel (and tons of walking there):

Monday: rest
Tuesday: 2 miles LR
Wednesday: Strength train
Thursday through Sunday: D23 Ultimate Fan Event

Thoughts??

will missing yesterday and having today be a rest day snowball into missing tuesday or skipping strength on wednesday? I know for me, 2 days in a row off can make things dicey on the consistency front.

Maybe reframe it from "making up" to switching your LR and rest days?

Good thought. Honestly, it probably won't affect the next few days either way. It is a bit busy today but I think I'll go ahead and do it if I can carve out some time later this afternoon.

July Running
Miles: 75.35
Time: 13:12:26
Avg Pace: 10:32
Avg HR: 148

July was OK. It was hot, but I finally got new shoes and leg soreness seems to be going away. I hope? If I could get a T+D under 140, I would be able to assess my fitness a little better!

July Walking
Walks: 10
Time: 2:55:57

It was hot, so unless I walked my lab before 8am, it wasn't happening due to his paws and his fur coat. We still accomplished 10 walks, which was decent. Later this month, when it cools down and the kids go back to school, there will be more time to walk :)

I just heard one of the announcers talking about some runners moving around events in attempt to do the 5,000m, 10,000m, and marathon. Is this the Olympics version of the Dopey challenge? :D
1952. Emil Zatopek. Won gold in the 5000 and 10000m and then during the games, decided to enter his Very First Marathon Ever....and won gold.

….and Siffan Hassan (I’m sure I spelled that wrong) is doing the same on the women’s side.

she took bronze in the 5k today. It’s noteworthy that she’s doing all 3 races, but will be much more impressive if she is “relevant” in the races…to quote Des and Kara.
