The Running Thread - 2021

ATTQOTD:
A) 3-4 miles, a good weekday run either before or after work
B) 10 miles, it's nice to hit the double digits but not have to arrange your whole day around it
C) Half and above, I feel like you get the most for your training...also for your money and time.

D) 5K, while I enjoy some of my local 5ks... I am not ashamed to admit I really love race bling and it is a rarity to get shiny things for running a 5k

ATTQOTD:
a) 4 miles is the sweet spot
b) 11-13 miles. No good reason. Just feels like a long run
c) Love the 10 miler. Short enough you can put on a good effort the whole time but long enough that you're not going full-out. It's over just about when I'm starting to want the race to be over :)
d) I don't know... most of my marathons have been death-marches at the end. But as my training progresses I like them more. Still probably my least favorite and the first thing I will give up once I start feeling my age.

ATTQOTD:
a - 10-12 miles. That is what I have been doing for the last nine months. Nice distance to clear my head after work
b - 20-25 miles. Long enough to be a good slow run but not too long. My long runs used to be 30-35 miles and I was over-trained for races.
c - 100 miler. I have only done a handful but they are always a memorable experience. So much that can go wrong. All of mine have provided many opportunities to learn how to adapt on the fly. Much more a mental/resilience challenge versus physical.
d - Probably 5k. I have not run one alone in more than 5 years (I have been running for 7), so I have not really pushed for a good time.

ATTQOTD:
A. 4-8 miles depending on what time I drag myself out of bed
B. 15 miles is a good number for me
C. Half marathon. I haven’t done anything longer (yet)
Least favorite- 5K. Everyone is in such a hurry. I just like to get the exercise (or do my best to make everyone else look fast haha)

How long is your planned ultra? Is your training plan from DopeyBadger or elsewhere? How long do you think your 30-miler will take?

If it stays as scheduled, I am about to embark on a 26 week plan to prep for my first 100 miler - Woodstock 100 here in Michigan. Only goal is to finish in the 30 hour limit. Training plan came from a friend. It is fairly demanding the further in I get. I have never run 30 miles as a training run only in races; going to assume 6ish hours?

BTW - you motivating me to look up the Yeti Challenge. I am going to do it in March on a weekend I have 10 and 16 planned, so it fits pretty well. Looks fun!

(Hi! It's been a while, what with quarantine weight gain and ashfall and my back deciding that it hated me.)
Hi, yes, long time no read! Welcome back!

BTW - you motivating me to look up the Yeti Challenge. I am going to do it in March on a weekend I have 10 and 16 planned, so it fits pretty well. Looks fun!
That does look fun! Would probably wreck my current training plan though. I have to resist the challenges and the bling!

QOTD: What is your favorite distance for a:
a. weekday run?
b. long run?
c. race?
(Bonus- least favorite race distance?)

a. Used to be 6, becoming more like 3-4.
b. 9 miles. Before I was on a plan that was always my Saturday (long day) run.
c. Favorite is HM, you can run a good race and not be completely wiped out.
Bonus. 5K, which is always a near-death experience for me. Except it's also my favorite distance since it's over so fast and you (used to) could run one every weekend.

There are track sprinters and ultramarathon runners... and everything in between. So let's talk distance!

QOTD: What is your favorite distance for a:
a. weekday run?
b. long run?
c. race?
(Bonus- least favorite race distance?)

A: Somewhere between 45-75 minutes I find to be a nice time to run in the morning. Long enough to work up a good sweat during intervals, but not too long it interferes with the rest of the day.
B: 16-20 miles. I enjoy long runs of 3 hours or so. Plenty of time for conversations with friends and taking in the scenery.
C: marathon. Traveling around the world for a full or longer makes it feel more worthwhile.
D: 5k. I am not a fast sprinter.

ATTQOTD:
a) 4 miles -It's enough time to run & shower in 1hour.
b) 10 miles - It's been a long time since I've done that, but a double digit run always feels substantial
c) Half or Full marathon- The half is a better training cycle for life, but the accomplishment of a full marathon feels so good!
d) 10K. I've only done one and it was so miserable that I don't want to do it again!

Pre-baby ATTQOTD: What is your favorite distance for a:
a. weekday run? 4-6 miles
b. long run? 10-15 miles
c. race? Half
(Bonus- least favorite race distance?) 5K, I can never seem to get pacing right.

Post-baby ATTQOTD:
a. whatever I can get done
b. whatever I can get done
c. whatever is available due to COVID
d. still a 5K :rotfl2:

QOTD: What is your favorite distance for a:
a. weekday run?
b. long run?
c. race?
(Bonus- least favorite race distance?)

A. 1 hour (about 4.5ish-5 miles at my current pace)
B. 8-10 miles. That's when I really get into the zone without totally killing myself.
C. Probably half marathon (I actually prefer 10K as a distance but I have the worst luck with 10k races)
Bonus: Marathon

Awesome! Good luck with the training!

I was sort of thinking that the Yeti might be a good way to get in some big miles during training - sort of like DopeyBadger's 90-min on Saturday + 150 min on Sunday. The downside is that it really takes over your weekend.

There is another Yeti 24-hr Challenge where it is 50 miles instead of 50K, but again, you split it into 6 runs every four hours. I'm not sure when they do that one.

QOTD:

A. 3-5 miles
B. 6-14 miles depending on what I'm training for (often will do back to back long runs on Sat & Sun)
C. half marathon
Bonus: 5K because in the beginning I always think "it's only 3 miles, I should be able to run this super fast", but in the end I always feel like I'm going to die!! 😆

QOTD:

A. 5ish miles makes me feel like I am accomplishing something
B. 10-12 miles for a long run. Doesn’t eat up too much of my time on Saturday.
C. 10 mile race is my favorite. I’ve only raced that distance once and loved it.

Bonus: 5K.....besides Disney races I haven’t run a 5K race in 3 years. Too hard and fast to really get into a groove and zone out.

There are track sprinters and ultramarathon runners... and everything in between. So let's talk distance!

QOTD: What is your favorite distance for a:
a. weekday run?
b. long run?
c. race?
(Bonus- least favorite race distance?)

a. If I'm doing a run during a break for work I go more by time, 45 minutes to an hour. If it is after work or on a day off 5 or 6 miles.
b. If I'm not training for a marathon 9 or 10 miles. During marathon training 15 to 17 is my sweet spot.
c. My favorite is the half. Long enough to feel worth traveling for but short enough I don't really need to train for it.
Bonus - I don't do them any longer but 800m is the worst distance there is. Of the distances I do now probably the full.

D) 5K, while I enjoy some of my local 5ks... I am not ashamed to admit I really love race bling and it is a rarity to get shiny things for running a 5k
So I registered my nephews for the virtual kids races for marathon weekend. The older one has done some 5Ks both real and a runDisney virtual one and was a bit "underwhelmed" by the brightly colored plastic of the kids races medals. He was expecting metal. His younger brother was ecstatic and liked having his own medal.

ATTQOTD:

a. Most of my training runs range from 2.5 to 4 miles. I usually pick 3 out of habit I suppose from my days on the Galloway plan for anything lower than a marathon.

b. Let's go with 6 miles.

c. I used to say the 10K because it's long enough to be a challenge, but not so long as to take a big chunk out of your day, but believe it or not I think it's the marathon now. Now I don't like training for the marathon. You have to really want the marathon to train for it. Yes, it literally defines the rest of the day and spills over into the next two or three. And yes it's brutally difficult especially since both of mine were in hot and humid Orlando. But that feeling of realizing that you're going to finish the marathon is incredible. Granted it also helps that I have some very fond memories that may have been either a runners high or hallucinations during the last 10K portion of both WDW marathons that helped make the experience. I may very well have a very different opinion should I decide to run a marathon outside of Disney World.

Bonus- Like many the 5K, but for different reasons. I've never run an all out effort 5K since all of mine were part of challenges so I needed to take the 5K slow to save my legs before the races or let them recover when I ran a 5K immediately following the Half or 10K. But since most of my 5Ks have been runDisney, the shorter distance also means less unique runDisney moments.

I'm doing very badly following this thread in 2021, but running is going alright!

QOTD:
a. 4-5 miles
b. 10-15, 12 is usually just right because on my favorite trail, there is a bathroom at 6 miles, so I can make a pitstop and turn around and head back
c. half marathon
d. 5k - I also always feel like I'm going to die. I am not built for running fast

ATTQOTD:
a) 6-8 miles*
b) 13-15 miles*
c/bonus) unsure since I don't race a lot but probably a half is my favorite since there's training, but not as much as a full (depending on your goals, eg my NYQ half was harder than my full BQ). 5k you're going full throttle and I've never paced it right (it's been almost 5 years since my last one). Usually I go way too fast my first mile to clear the field and pay for it at the goal line. It's also been a while since my last 10k, but I think it's very hard to pace because you're going a pretty fast clip for a longer distance.

*with nothing to train for, I've been running mostly 3-6 miles during COVID
