The Running Thread - 2016

Thats kind of my problem. I need/want them for the gym to watch TV so I need wired and I hate running with my cell phone. I live in the south so my running attire 10 months out of the year consists of shorts, shoes and a hat. Socks only if it's over 6 miles. So the thought of carrying my phone is kinda intimidating.

Now I just sounds like a whiney baby.

Not at all! I live in NC and regularly have to run in 100+ degree heat indices. I'd much rather do that than run on a treadmill!

If you like the concept of the bone conducting headphones, though, I think they just released a wired version.

Agreed. I don't go anywhere without my phone.

I've needed my phone three times on runs: once to call for help for a loose dog who was hit (not badly) by a car, once to call the number on the tag of another loose dog, and once to call 911 for a cyclist who took a spill!

ATTQOTD: I don't think I've ever gotten a running related gift. I think I'm in the gift card camp, through. Or a race registration would be great.

ATTQOTD: running gifts or ideas.

No strange gifts except a bright peach colored running tank top...before I was even a runner.
I received a gift card to a local running store last year! Saved it until April and got 2 pairs of shoes that were marked down to make way for new models.

Everyone that is getting or asking for race registrations.......very smart. Never considered that as a gift idea...........UNTIL NOW!!!!
Like the way you are thinking!

ATTQOTD: I love when DH picks out nice running tights or pullovers as gifts for me. My in-laws give Balega socks sometimes which is really appreciated.

IMO, the best socks ever made! worth the ~$10/pair, which makes me want to vomit when I see how many pairs I have. But again, my feet are so happy with them!

ATTQOTD: I've asked Santa for a new Garmin 230 as my current 610 is being held together by duct tape, electrical tape and super glue and the reset button is missing which makes intervals a challenge (I use a thumb tack to reset).

In the past I've received the usual suspects, gift cards/certificates, race entries, etc.

I really hope you have been good because you need Santa to bring you a watch ASAP. A thumb tack while running... what could go wrong lol.

Those of us living south of I-10 know exactly how you feel about the running conditions most of the year. I have yet to find a way to make the summer less miserable. But think of it this way, our neighbors in the northern part of the country are mostly confined to treadmill running for a few month of the year. Could you imagine going for a 20 miler on a treadmill? I will take the heat down here over that.

Balegas are all I wear, even for every day. I am not even going to count how many pair I have and do the math on the cost. I do always try to get them when they are buy one/two, get one free.

I split time between #TeamBalega and #TeamFeetures ... yeah, it's ridiculous to pay that much for socks, but it's 100-percent worth it.

This is one of the things I love about this board. I was firmly #TeamThorlos but after seeing how many people on here loved Balegas I gave them a try. Now I won't run in anything else! They are fantastic! For what it's worth, I tried Feetures but found that socks with forefoot and heel cushioning but minimalist midfoot cushion aggravate my pf.

It's great having the feedback and information on things I never would have discovered on my own. Balegas, InkNBurn and Orange Mud just to name a few. I've given up on keeping track of how much @Ariel484 alone has cost me in new gear! :rotfl2:

Have you also looked into aqua jogging? Once you get to a point where the movement doesn't hurt, but supporting the weight still does like on an elliptical, aqua jogging is a great way to build and maintain running fitness and get in longer workouts without the pain. I looked into this a while ago, but couldn't find a pool deep enough. (It's supposed to be complete zero impact, so you don't even touch the bottom. Lots of stuff online on how to do it correctly.)

Thanks for the suggestion but in this case I need to deal with the pain. My doctor specifically said to do the elliptical for 6 weeks because it is the closest thing to the running motion, to strengthen everything, without the impact while the bone continues to heal.

Thanks! Good to see you back around here again.

Good progress in making it back to the elliptical. Once your muscles remember what they're supposed to do, I hope the pain and soreness goes away.

Thanks John. I have been told to expect to be in pain for a few more months. So when I can start running again (a month from today) I will have to take it slow.

Same here. I feel like I don't have much to contribute, and it kind of makes me sad.

I am usually on top of this stuff but what did you do?

ATTQOTD: I think I would echo much of what has been said about running form, foot strike, types of shoes, etc. But specific for me is simply my size. I am a big guy, I don't exactly fit the runner's build stereotype. I do get conscious of it at times, but I am what I am. I like to blame it on my genetics; I come from a family of "healthy" men. But it is a balance of the genetics and a love for ice cream! So I don't exactly fit the norm of a runner or at least what I think a runner should be... Interesting. Whatever, I love running.

@Waiting2goback happy to hear that your injury is improving and good to see you are back on the thread. I miss your inspirational quotes!
I will be back with them soon enough. It ihas just been crazy for me. The wife and I have started mediation to finalize the divorce, she is moving out in a couple weeks, and I start a new job on Monday. All of this has kept me from my computer.

QOTD: It's the end of the month. What is your monthly mileage for November?

ATTQOTD: Unless I run today, I am coming in with a crowd pleasing 45.66 miles.

Monthly mileage- 0

But, I did consistently get in my P90X workouts and I may even be able to add in some new ones this month.
I stayed pretty consistent on my bike but the total minutes dropped for sure. I stopped keeping track toward the end of the month so I have no totals. But I underestimated how much more I needed to rest once I started back to work this month.

ATTQOTD: Today is a rest day so my total for November is 123.85 miles. A new PR for me and I had to calculate it like 5 times to make sure it was really that high. I feel like I have come a long way these past few months!

You have made HUGE strides over the last couple of months. You should be very proud of yourself.

QOTD: Before we know it Christmas will be here. For those shopping for a gift for you and they want to get you something for running what items do you suggest for them to purchase? What are some odd running gifts you have received?

ATTQOTD: I ask for things that are fairly simple in regards to running, for example the type of GU I like, or a subscription to Runners World. I've also asked for someone to register me for a race or a gift card to my local running store. As for as odd things I would say some coconut milk may be the strangest. Apparently its great for hydration, but I couldn't make myself drink it. Another year someone gave me running shorts. Not that shorts are odd, but they ended up being a size to small and way to short. I was unable to exchange them as well :(. I think having someone else buying a running gift for a runner is a difficult thing to do, as we each have very specific things we are looking for with our running gear.

There are many new things I would want for running but I am very picky and I don't think anyone would buy them for me. I generally get Disney gift cards for gifts because they are easy and they bring a smile to my face every time.

I'm behind here again! I'll get caught up eventually though.

I had a good race Thanksgiving Day. It was the 80th running of the Manchester Road Race (my 9th) and apparently we had quite the elite field - Galen Rupp and Paul Chelimo Will Clash - though I didn't realize it ahead of time.

I finished in 45:29, a PR by 38 seconds, and my sister-in-law beat her time by a second for a nice 41:25 finish. My husband had to sit this year out trying to recover from runner's knee.

@LSUlakes - I'm adding a last minute race for this Saturday. December 03 - mrsgryphon - Tinsel Fun Run 2 mile - (NG / N/A)

I haven't tried Balega socks yet. I mostly run in either some thin SockGuy socks with air channels in them... the ones I get are some discontinued ones that last year I used to buy up a bunch of pairs every time I needed to round out a LeftLane Sports order up to the $75 for free shopping. They have (had?) them for $5 a pair and I love them. For longer distances though, I have 4 pairs of the Thorlo Experias that I bought at the Tink 2015 expo. Nothing new on race day right? I wore a pair of those for the HM the next day. :D
