The Running Thread - 2016

Mind blown! Am I a luddite or what? Actually, when the apple watch 2 came out, I had no idea the first iteration had no gps.
Yeah, that's what originally kept me from getting an Apple Watch, that it didn't have stand alone GPS...now I actually do have the series 2, with the stand alone GPS, but I still use Garmins when I run and still carry my phone...:confused3

I think it has 1GB of storage for music or something...but again, I just take my phone anyway so I use that for music (and I only listen to music on my looooooong runs).

I hope nothing I say here offends anyone but I've always had a special admiration for back of the pack runners/walkers. Yes we are all amazed at the elites and anyone who finishes any race is awesome. But I always admire people who have the dedication to be out there for say 6 hours for a marathon. That's a long time to be doing one thing continuously, especially one athletic event. I honestly don't know if I could do it. It's always great to see those folks cross the finish line.
Thanks :)

I am not offended. Sometimes I feel really bad that I am slow when I finish a half in like 2:50 or 3 hours, but then I try and remind myself of this. Some of the people that I am so in awe of that finish the race and their cooldown runs before I am even close to being done maybe have never even run as long as I am. It's really hard to be focused and keep moving for that long. :) I know it's not quite the same as a 6 hour marathon, but it's still hard. :)

ATTQOTD: I only started running last year, so last Christmas I asked for (read: ordered it myself) a black Sparkle Skirt and also got one for DD26. She is the only other person in my family who runs (although DH does occasionally but he is clueless for gear) so she got me tons of tops and jackets/hoodies last year! Like @Ariel484 I usually get Disney Gift cards as gifts as everyone knows my Disney obsession. This year DH and I are combining our gifts to each other and getting a new, Purple brand, king size bed/mattress. Slightly running related as I have had on/off back issues my whole life and it is SO much easier to run when your back isn't hurting from sleeping on a bad mattress!

QOTD: Before we know it Christmas will be here. For those shopping for a gift for you and they want to get you something for running what items do you suggest for them to purchase? What are some odd running gifts you have received?
I may or may not have walked around the local running store and sent snapchats to my family with captions like "so cute", "look at this top", etc. One item was a hat branded with the local running club's logo (by wearing club merch I get a discount plus it's a cute winter hat), these socks, and an top that was printed like an ugly Christmas sweater. I'm generally picky about my running clothes so I usually know when someone plans to buy me some but I will always accept a good pair of socks, a race entry, or fuel to try out. In the past, I've received my Garmin 230, some tights and winter running clothes, and my stridebox subscription. Nothing too weird there.

ATTQOTD: This year my running related Christmas gift was my Dopey registration fees. I have been told to expect a minimal visit from Santa this year after that cost. But I bet he leaves some gels and a pair of socks or two in my stocking.

ATTQOTD: I've asked Santa for a new Garmin 230 as my current 610 is being held together by duct tape, electrical tape and super glue and the reset button is missing which makes intervals a challenge (I use a thumb tack to reset).

This is soooo me. I don't own a Garmin/gps watch, but I have a running watch that I have had since 2005. It is on its third wristband, I have to use a pen to move it from time to stopwatch and just last week it literally fell off my wrist when the third wristband (which was already tapped up) came apart... maybe time to finally get a new watch!

I think it gives me more power with each step and a slight increase in speed with a slight decrease in cadence.
Okay, I think finally get what your trying to do, sorry, I was just really confused. Yeah, getting some "power" off your step off does make a difference. Thanks for explaining!

As for gifts we don't really do exchanges anymore, but in the past I got mittens many times for running, some I still have and use for running, like today I used a pair!

Re: the Garmin accelerometer thing, supposedly it's supposed to learn and calibrate itself to your running style as you use it. So, it usually sucks right out of the box, but as you run outdoors with it, it calibrates itself to you with the GPS statistics. I don't remember how long it's supposed to take to sort itself out, maybe just a few outdoor runs, but after some period of time of calibrating itself to you, it's supposed to be better once you turn off the GPS and use it indoors.

I Have never received a running related gift for holidays, even though I have asked. Every year my MIL asks for my Amazon list which has waffles, socks, foam roller, etc., on it and yet I get mismatched candle holders, a glass bowl and other pieces of crap I don't want or need. LOL! I told DH I wanted some bluetooth earbuds this year and then on Black Friday, Costco had a pair for $30 off so I ordered them myself.

I've had mine for over a year, so it is fully self-calibrated, but it is still inaccurate on the treadmill. DCRainmaker also reviews it as being pretty poor. I think it is okay (within about 20 secs/mile) at your easy run pace since that it basically what it is calibrated to since most runs are at that pace; however, it really gets off when you run anything faster or slower than that pace. Also, I believe that my form changes slightly when I run on the treadmill, so that could be a contributing factor as well.

The footpod accelerometer does a much better job.

I was trying to reply to someone who had asked how someone else got theirs to be very close to their treadmill numbers but the quote wasn't coming up when I hit the button. :)

I believe it is probably one of those things where it works well for some people but not for others if your style of running changes. Like maybe you (not you specifically, just in general) grab the handles a lot or something, anything that changes how you usually swing your arms. If you're really concerned about accuracy, the foot pod is probably the way to go. For me, I would probably just note the distance on the treadmill and edit it in Strava at the end if it was really off. :)

November mileage was 96 miles. Had to cut some longer runs short due to feeling sick from stomach vs. goo issues.

The weirdest running related gift I received was last year for Christmas. My husband gave me one of those balls that you aren't supposed to use to massage your feet. It was really spikey and kinda hurt when you would roll your foot back and forth on it. Even he thought it was a bad gift once he tried it out.
