The Running Thread - 2016

I love all the drink names...my wife is set on the Uh-Oha but since we're staying at the Poly I'm hoping to end a couple nights there. HippopotoMaiTai sounds right up my alley :)
Uh-Oha is DANGEROUS!! :faint:

But delicious. HippopotoMaiTai is also delicious...Dark and Tropical Stoney is good as well, really different. Krakatoa Punch and the Polynesian Pearl are good as well.

Another classic case of me thinking I was posting in my journal. Oops (FYI 54:37, goal was 55:05...close, so my blind training is working). I'll bore people with details in my journal.

I guess I promised to post about my 7 mile tempo treadmill run. It was technically a virtual race vs dopeybadger who was doing 7 miles easy. Although he still beat me on time... He did "math" and said I won even though I took longer.

Checking in for my 5k! I had no official goal, but wanted to be under 35 minutes... I'm going to guess I was about 33 minutes. (See below and let me know if you think I have this wrong).. I can't figure out how to look up the official results yet. Overall I'm really happy with myself. My husband agreed to run my race till a little after mile 2, when I took a 2 minute walk and he decide to run the last mile. Totally fine with me, I had a great time, and since the race was in my town it was nice to run really locally.

The race clock had 33:50 on it when I passed, I was near the front of the starters as most people were walking so even the last runner was at the front. However I'm not positive what time I started at.

Map my run had me at 34:32 for 3.4 miles, I started it slightly early and ended it slightly late.

Now to find another race!

Hope everyone else had good races too!

If you would like to revise your goal or set up for this upcoming weekends race, just let me know. Good luck to everyone and have a good race! I look forward to reading about how everyone did over the weekend!
All sorts of good news on the jhorstma front! Perfect weather (58 degrees - 30 degrees cooler from my last run) in Manassas Battlefield for the Prince William Half, leading to a PR at 2:10:23. But far better, my 23 year old son, who's new to running (but an avid hiker) ran it with me and for his very first half marathon broke 2 hours at 1:59:22! And even better, he's hooked! Says "sign me up dad for the Disney Marathon!" So now there are four of us emptying our wallets to RunDisney for next January - DW (5K/10K), DD (Dopey), DS (Marathon), and me (5K/Marathon)!

That is awesome (about your son) and congrats on the PR!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend, the weather looks amazing for running! I'm fixing to get in 15 miles of trails later this morning and then a few days off as my wife and I head to WDW for an quick ADULT trip! Food & Wine, Ohana, and we're trying out Grog Grotto for the first time

Maybe we'll run into you. My wife and I are going down from Thurs - Tue to celebrate our anniversary.

I've spent the last 3 weeks compressing my training into 6 day weeks so that I won't have to run while we're there. It's been a strain on my legs, but two more runs and it will have been a success!

congrats on the PW Half for you and your son. Weather was super nice today. Glad you had a successful run! Haven't done the PW Half yet but it looks like a nice event.

I wanted to jump in and tell you guys about running with pumpkin friends this weekend. So, I'm not sure if it was their first time holding the race at the farm or what but they gave them a tiny barn to do packet pickup day of and I guess they expected more the day before at pre-race pickup because the line was about 20 minutes when I arrived and closer to an hour by the time my friend arrived (I got back in line for her so it wasn't nearly as long). The farm also decided that finishers should only get small pumpkins (fine with me) but they gave one container of small/medium pumpkins for tough pumpkin and made the rest large. As a result my pumpkin (which was on the smaller size by the time I got there) was 11lbs and my friend's was 13lbs. This meant that @roxymama's strategy of a football carry was out. We ended up running at the start and at the finish and otherwise just walking our pumpkins because we didn't want to risk tripping over vines or rocks in the fields we were running through. We still had a great time and felt very accomplished though, it's just not what I expected. I had hoped to run more with my pumpkin friend but my pumpkin friend was just too big for that. On the upside it's a very nice fall decoration. Overall, I feel I would consider running the pumpkin run at a different farm at some point because I want to run with a little pumpkin but this farm did not seem well prepared or the company that holds the run didn't communicate well with them so I would skip out on running there.

It sounds cute! I just put up all of pumpkin decorations, and I have literally been putting pumpkin spice on every breakfast food I've eaten this past week (toast, hot chocolate, oatmeal), so a pumpkin run sounds right up my alley! Sorry, that it wasn't organized as well as it could have been though!

Congrats to all who raced this weekend! Looks like everyone is starting to get a little relief from the summer heat as well. I had 16 miles planned for the weekend long run. A friend and I started at 6:30 to get the first 6 in before joining the big training group for another 10. The first 6 went well, and so did the next 6. It started going down hill from there... By mile 14 ish I knew I was in trouble and started to walk/run with the goal being to run the last mile. I hit mile 15 and tried to get going only to get hit with bad cramps in my calves. I walked until it went away, and would try again only to have it repeat. After 4-5 times of that I gave up and stopped at 15.4 miles. I think my problem was not taking in enough fluids on Friday. I had plenty of fluids during the run Saturday including roughly 60oz of water, 2 Gatorades, 3 GU's and two salt tab things. I just need to better prepare myself for my long runs, and I should know better.
In other news, LSU fired Les Miles. I figured it was coming, but I did not think I would have happened in September. I wish the guy the best, as he is a really decent person, but our program needs a change.

QOTD: What is your opinion on virtual 5ks? (I think we discussed this at some point, but I have had a few people PM me as a QOTD idea. I figured it worth discussing again.)

ATTQOTD: While I haven't participated in one, I think if its a event that gets someone to get out the door and run, then so be it. It could open the door to other possibilities for that person or it could be a event to keep someone on track for a goal. Some people may want to race, but are not comfortable around large crowds, so I see this as a event that works for them. It is also a great way for fundraising for a charity or cause that is spread out across the country to get many people from all over to partake in a event and not just one small area.

No QOTD and sign of @LSUlakes today? He must be out celebrating (or regretting?) the firing of Les Miles.

Took a little longer to get to my desk with all the conversations of the firing on Sunday. I had a beer to celebrate. It was time for him to go, and even though a part of me feels for the guy, I quickly remember they are still paying him another ~$12 million. Hard to feel bad for a guy who would not change after given a chance with that big of a check hitting his account. If we have any Houston fans here, I think yalls guy is our #1 pick at this time.

I don't mean to offend anyone who participates in virtual runs at all, but for the mostpart*, I don't understand the appeal. I think I'll just leave it at that. :)

*Having said that, I did recently do 1 virtual 5K - 100% of the proceeds went to the One Orlando fund since the medals and shirts were donated, so I felt good about where my money was going.
