The Running Thread - 2016

After my first rD marathon in January, I had reservations for an 11am-ish breakfast at Kona at the Polynesian. Right after the race, I believe I ate a banana at the finish but nothing else. After walking out of the finish area and over to the monorail, I assumed I'd be plenty hungry for breakfast at Kona. I ordered big. It looked great. I sample a little of all of it, but regrettably left half of my meal behind. I had been warned that I might not be hungry for a while, but just assumed that could never apply to me. After a real shower, etc. and a tad of rest at Pop Century, we hit EPCOT in the afternoon. My appetite was back in full for dinner at Via Napoli.

Definitely not. I have to eat something very mild. I actually don't make any ADRs for the day of the half, because I sometimes get sick after the race.

My first marathon was also in January. I ate little snacks throughout the day, but couldn't eat much at a time. We had dinner reservations at Rose and Crown. I still was not hungry, so ordered only the potato-leek soup. Basically, fell asleep in my soup. Family decided to take me back to the resort! I think I was just too tired to eat!

QOTD: To follow up on yesterdays question. You just finished your race and you experiencing that "runners high". What is your post race routine?

The local races I run here with my friends all generally start and finish at a brewery and race registration includes three free beers, so we usually hang out and drink those beers and then head out for brunch or to hang at the pub in our neighborhood and ride bikes to bar-hop. The only outlier is Thanksgiving - I go straight from the race to my house to start prepping for Friendsgiving.

WDW races? Parking lot drink (beer or bubbles) and then off to brunch. DL races? Clean up at the hotel with a hotel-room mimosa and then off to brunch.

Nope. I'm hardly ever hungry after a race. It takes several hours before I want to eat any real food. I am always ready to rehydrate, though. Post-marathon afternoon is generally spent bar hopping.

No question you're my Spirit Animal.

@LSUlakes I have a race to add to the calendar! This is my 1st time reporting a race (because it's my first race in 2 years!), so please let me know if you need any other information.

Coca Cola Classic 10K, November 12 (1:10/ n/a)

I'm also signed up for the PHM, I haven't determined a goal yet.

Ahh! I finally bit the bullet and signed up... I'm nervous exited! :-)

ATTQOTD: We don't usually linger for a long time after finishing a race. For local races we'll grab whatever food offerings they have (I'm always hungry after I finish running) and hopefully a beer if provided. We might linger and cheer some folks in, but we usually head for home pretty quickly.

At Disney we collect our medals, box, etc get our picture taken and then head out to get cleaned up and back out into the parks to celebrate!

Very exciting. I will add to the list soon. Quick question, after two years of no racing, what made you want to run a race again?

Well I just started running regularly again in February of this year! :) My last race was Feb 2014. I had my gallbladder out in Sept 2014 and that stopped all of my running for a long time...the doctor did a little extra abdominal muscle tearing. #oops Then I got lazy/out of the habit. But now I'm back... for good!!

ATTQOTD: Primary concern post-race is getting my blood-sugar back onto an even keel - so unless I happened to take a gel within sight of the finish line, step 1 is grabbing that bottle of Powerade/Gatorade and getting that going. And water.

If I finished without taking a final gel and I'm due, time-wise, I eat some of a gel post-finish. That's enough to get me to my car or bag check, where I'll have a Clif bar waiting to get some complex carbs and protein going. And water.

I rarely hang around after finishing, so the next step is driving home or to my resort, where I'll down a chocolate milk and/or Pepsi (Pepsi comes in if I feel a migraine coming on - it's magic!) And water.

Next, foam rolling and stretching, followed by a shower. And water.

After that, 2nd Breakfast, which is usually eggs and toast plus some fruit. And water.

By that time, I'm generally ready for some rest: TV, book, nap or a little of each. And water. :thumbsup2 I also do laundry after long runs and races - it's perfect for getting me up and moving a little without feeling like too much on an exhausted body.

ATTQOTD: Am I the only one who has trouble eating a large breakfast after a race? I typically eat whatever they give after a race (bananas, string cheese, water, coconut juice ...) and I even packed some post race soy milk, but I've had trouble eating a real breakfast afterwards.
Nope, not alone! I absolutely have to keep the calories and glucose coming after a long run/race, but I have no appetite at all. What seems to work for me is eating every 45 minutes/1 hour or so and keeping things small and simple. A chocolate milk. Half a bagel with butter. A scrambled egg with a couple strawberries. Whole wheat waffle with peanut butter. Greek yogurt. I'll keep that up until I feel okay again. I'm usually ready for a real meal by dinnertime.

That's awesome that you're back at it! Good luck in your race training!

I am both a southerner (grew up in Texas) and a midwesterner (lived here for most of the last 20 years), so completely understand.
I am both a midwesterner (grew up in Illinois) and a southerner (lived here for most of the last 15 years), so I also understand.

Btw, I'm also a foreigner, eastern-europeaner - so that part of me probably doesn't understand.

@LSUlakes: I also have a race to add...

It's on Thanksgiving and has an odd distance of 3.14 (Pi or π) miles. Also, the first 750 registrants get a Sara Lee Pie.

November
24 - opusone - Rotary Run 3.14 Pie (22:00 / N/A)
So how can you ever finish the race?

Never mind, technically you can cross the finish line, but you just can't get to the finish line ..you know what I mean. Math is hard.

@LSUlakes , You may want to modify the race listing on the first page to reflect this more accurate distance.

I'm one too that has no appetite after racing (or long training runs). But I know I can usually force liquids down so will drink chocolate milk& hopefully gatorades/powerade/water. Otherwise, a shower & then try to keep moving around, which at Disney is way easier than at home. Also, check my official results as soon as possible to make sure it recorded correctly, as I had a half a few years ago where my chip failed the whole time so had to send in proof I did finish and the time I got on my watch to the local half.

So how can you ever finish the race?

Never mind, technically you can cross the finish line, but you just can't get to the finish line ..you know what I mean. Math is hard.

As a big math geek, I appreciate this! On the actual course certification, they do round up to the next meter, so it's officially 5.056 km which is 3.14165... miles, slightly more than Pi. Close enough, but at least they round up so at some point in that last meter, you do pass Pi distance. Here is the second page of the course certification where you can see the 5056 meters...
