The Running Thread - 2016

100% The. Truth. Also, having a group of running besties doesn't hurt - especially when they're Disney-obsessed.

Anyway. Thanks for all the well wishes, y'all. Didn't really mean to drop a picture and run, but pain meds make it hard to be eloquent.

Anyway. Got home from California lay Tuesday (after being off my feet almost all of Sunday, quite a bit on Monday, and then all day again Tuesday), and felt the worst I've ever felt. I'd been texting with my aunt, who passed along some of my symptoms to the senior orthopedist in her practice (she does PT and has basically orchestrated all of my PT throughout my various surgeries), and he encouraged me to go get a set of x-rays done so I could get the ole insurance referral to come see him.

I figured my ankle was just a sprain, but after the x-rays were taken, the doctor discovered two stress fractures near an area I had a screw put in about 14 years ago. So, what's up gel cast and crutches! I'm stuck with those bad boys for at least two weeks, until I get another set of x-rays and hopefully transition to a walking boot.

As for my hip, it's still swollen badly, but is likely a Grade II/III sprain. I'm scheduled for an MRI next week to determine if there is any fraying or tearing in the labral area ... but, as for now, I'm just laying low and on a lot of delightful pain meds.

Aw, sorry @Keels...here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

When we walk Max, we have a concentrated citronella spray that our greyhound adoption group recommended. That way, if the wind is wrong, you don't pepper spray yourself. I've only armed it twice, I think.

Do tell more. I recently got attacked by a dog on a run, so I've become a little wary of them. I don't want to carry pepper spray because I'm confident I'll primarily spray myself. (I also don't want to hurt the dog.) I don't think it would have helped in this situation--it was a very fast, unprovoked attack. But I'd like to have some option what to do when I come across the random unleashed dog that I can predict might become a problem. Slowing to a walk and avoiding eye contact is just not terribly empowering!

ATTQOTD: Watching The Spirit of the Marathon documentary was the first time where I started to think (not outloud) that maybe I could run a marathon one day. It certainly inspired me to keep running no matter the distance.

An old friend's husband has actually attempted the Barkley twice. I think that he was able to complete three laps before running out of time this past race. Very confident I would never attempt that race but more power to those that do.

I don't really have any music that when I hear I want to run but I do enjoy hearing a song and adding it to my running playlist.

@Keels hoping for a speedy recovery for you. Your whole ordeal sounds very painful! You have such drive to continue to finish the half on two stress fractures.

ATTQOTD: There are movies (Prefontaine, The Cutting Edge) that inspire me to want to run, but not at that moment. I have had a drop every thing moment from reading a magazine though. I had picked up a Woman's Running Magazine and was reading through the articles and all of a sudden I thought "why read about it when I can go do it." We were having nice relaxing time in the backyard and all of a sudden I was putting on running clothes to go for a run.

Attqotd: as a few others have shared Spirit of the Marathon and Spirit of the Marathon II. Second one not quite as good, but both make me want to get out and run.

If I remember correctly aren't they doing a third one, which is based on the 2014 or 2015 Boston Marathon? I would imagine that its coming out soon... I saw either the first or second one at the movie theater with a running friend of mine. They are interesting films but not great. I will still watch them because they are based on running.

QOTD: How far (Miles/Time) is it to your nearest specialty running store? What's the name of that store?

ATTQOTD: From my house it is 22.6 miles and take around 30 minutes to get to. I am normally already in town when I go which is during my lunch break at work which is 10 miles or 20 minutes. The store is called Varsity Sports. If you happen to be in Baton Rouge, LA and need some running stuff, this is the place to go.

Just over a mile. It opened in the last year or so. It's called River Valley Running. They did the most to try and find me the right shoe than any other store I've visited has done. I have fallen in love with both shoes they recommended for me.

ATTQOTD: It's about 12 miles from my house, but only about 2 miles from work. :) It's been called Ultramax Running but just changed ownership and new name is Fleet Feet. I love the store and the staff there!

ATTQOTD: There was a Fleet Feet about a 1/2 mile from my house, but it moved to a larger shopping center about 4 miles away. There is a store called Soler's Sports (owned by Roger Soler - 1984 Olympian) about 1.25 miles from my place. Soler's is more of a mom and pop specialty store and generally I prefer their service and knowledge to Fleet Feet, but both are great.

Raleigh Running Outfitters (in Cary) is 13 miles and about 30 minutes from me. I don't go there often, but when I have they've been friendly and knowledgeable.

I've got a Fleet Feet and a local shop (2nd Sole Rocky River) both within a few miles (less than 10 minutes) from my house. Both seem to have an overabundance of young staffers who feel like they have more enthusiasm than knowledge. I recognize I'm not an expert, but I haven't felt like I'm getting great shoe recommendations from either.

We have one about 4 miles from our house called RunGr8. It is actually owned and operated by friends of ours. That makes me feel even more guilty when I don't purchase things from them though. I am a big amazon shopper-- both for the convenience and price. I do pop in there when I want a new running visor or fuel though.

There is one under 10 miles away called Charles River Running - just bought some shoes there, and the customer service was amazing.

Another one, just over 10 miles away, is called Marathon Sports -- right on the Boston Marathon course -- gets great reviews, and I've been meaning to check it out.

ATTQOTD: I actually had to google the closest store to me and it looks like it's 65 miles. My favorite stores are the Red Dirt Running stores in Lincoln and Omaha. They are about 2.5 hours from me. I just visited the Lincoln location for new running shoes (asics again!) and also came home with a pair of amazing flip flops (super feet).

Random Question: How much faster could I expect to run in a race v. by myself? I know there are SO many factors that could go into this answer! I ran 3 miles last night in 32:09 and am really wanting to be at a sub 30 min 5K (again...). Think I'd be close in a race?
