Running spouse ... love it!

Everyone should have a running spouse. Helps keep the actual spouse from being bored with running and training talk all the time.

Anyways, I have a quick question @FFigawi - how do you do the ziplock with spibelt? Do you just put it inside, or do you safety pin it to the outside?

I put it inside the belt along with anything else I might be carrying. I end up rotating the pouch over to my hip because when it's fully stuffed, it bounces around too much if I leave it against my back.

@Keels I hope you get better soon.

I've been lurking here all summer. Everyone seems very supportive. I'm training for the PHM. I just started running this summer and completed a C25k program last week. This week I have started a 5k2 10k program. Tomorrow's run calls for a 3 minute tempo run. I have looked up tempo runs, and if I understand it, it's supposed to be faster than my normal run. I am already running at 95% of my max HR. Am I missing something?
Hi congrats on completing your C25k! That's how I started. I also went to a 10k program. I will admit to not doing tempo runs until after I had a 10k down because at that point I was most concerned with getting to the 10k distance. I'm not sure if helped or harmed me in the long run but I made it to my 10k healthy which was my main goal. As others have said if you're in the 95% HR zone you're going a bit hard. It's okay to go slow in training. I know that's something I still struggle with and think many people do from time to time.

So to reiterate the things I should have for running are a running spouse, yoga, potatoes, and beer?

Thanks @Anisum! I have been focused only on getting to the minutes/distance, not so much on the HR. I'm heading out to run now.....we'll see how it goes.

Not a big deal, but I noticed a typo. The Brewers 10K is me (I know, the names are really similar). I don't think I'm going to change and put down a specific time, since I don't know what the weather will be like, but I do have a goal range in mind. Like I said earlier, I would really like to go for a PR.

This race is actually me. So thanks! I did this one last year and enjoyed it so I am really looking forward to it. I'm just hoping the rain they're forecasting either moves through before or not at all. I wanted to do the Mini Marathon but decided to stick with the 10K. Hopefully next year I can do the Mini, and I hope you're able to as well!

I thought something was up, when I had the correct name when I went to tag you but it wouldn't pop up correctly, so I thought maybe I left some numbers off the end. What actually happened is I forgot the * in front of your name. I will make the correction and thanks for letting me know. Good luck!

@Keels Sorry to see that picture. I hope you have a speedy recovery!

@Baloo in MI , life does sometimes get in the way of our running. I know the feeling. Hope things improve and you have a good race!

QOTD: Do you have a movie, book, song, YouTube video, ect that after seeing it, makes you want to stop what you are doing and go out for run ASAP? Have you ever actually just dropped everything you where doing and went out for a run?

ATTQOTD: Yes. I have a few things that when I watch them I am very motivated to go out for a run. The movie would be Without Limits, which is a story about Prefontaine. YouTube also has many running hype type clips that get me going as well. I am not saying I must watch these to get myself out the door, but sometimes they get me a little more motivated about the upcoming run. For the second part of the question, I was being a little lazy and getting into bed one night when I was wasting time on Facebook which led to a video about running, and then another. I felt a resurgence of energy and put on my running shoes and went out the door for a run. It wasn't a long one, but its always better to have something to post than a big 0 for the day.

What do others do with these plans when they have already been building up their base to run longer than 3 or 4 miles? For example, if I can already run 6 miles ... should I just substitute the 3 mile long run with a 6 mile long run until the plan catches up?
That's exactly what I do - keep running my long runs at whatever for whatever distance I've been doing them, then start increasing when the plan gets to a distance beyond my base.

I highly recommend using the McMillan Running calculator at https://www.mcmillanrunning.com/. You don't have to use a race - just use your fastest time from a particular distance. You don't have to enter a time for your goal race, either, just the distance. Once calculated, click on Training Paces over on the left - that'll calculate paces for each type of workout, and you can click on each workout type - Tempo Run in this case - to read about how it should be approached. Doing all runs at 95% of HR is a recipe for disaster, IMO: generally speaking, most runs should be at an easy pace, and long runs in particular should be at a pace at which you can speak in full sentences. More advanced training includes some long run workouts that push pace, but if you're just getting started, that's probably too much too soon.

ACK, what happened?!?!

Wow DopeyBadger.......thank you so much for the detailed response!! That's great info! I Just started running in June. I am 45, so I didn't expect it to be an easy thing to begin. I am happy to have made it this far and don't want to get injured. I do have a Garmin, but I am still learning how to use it and haven't been paying attention to the heart rate feature until this tempo run thing came up. So much to learn! Thank you......I will try to digest this and I'm sure I'll have more questions.

I have a tempo run scheduled tonight, so I hope my example helps (I'm using just one type of tempo workout.) The nice thing is that although I'm running 6 miles total...the first 1.5 miles will be at a "warm-up"/easy pace for me at 12:58ish and then I'll do 3 miles at my "tempo" pace of 9:42 (which is a pace I'd be happy running my upcoming race at god-willing) and then 1.5 miles back at my easy 12:58. The warm-up often feels too slow and the cool-down is a relief. If I wasn't watching my garmin (which I'm actually not doing tonight because I'm trying another "blind run" with my watch covered in tape) then I'd do 1.5 miles of super chill/I can talk all day/heart is not pumping/truly just jogging and then 3 miles of "this feels like I'm running a race...maybe not a PR-level 5k, but a pretty good effort", and then 1.5 miles of that easy stuff again for a cool-down.
I hope that makes sense. So even if you run a tempo workout...you don't have to run the whole thing at that fast pace. You could try once a week doing a tempo run and just extending gradually how long the fast portion is. Like next week I have to do 4 miles at tempo (yay???)...but still get my warmup and cool-down sandwiched around it.

@Keels Ouch! But on the bright side I'm impressed by your snazzy nails.

QOTD: Do you have a movie, book, song, YouTube video, ect that after seeing it, makes you want to stop what you are doing and go out for run ASAP? Have you ever actually just dropped everything you where doing and went out for a run?

ATTQOTD: Yes... Top Gun. I feel the need... the need for speed! :rotfl: Gets me every time. It's rare that I just up and go for a run nowadays: schedule's too full. But as a teen and young adult? Absolutely! I distinctly remember getting super stressed and frustrated with school work late one night and going out in the snow to run until the stress faded. I also remember enjoying an amazing beach sunset and suddenly feeling a need to run along the shoreline for a bit - so I got up and did!

ATTQOTD: Hmmm, Yes! I was watching an Australian Ironman on some outdoors channel and they had the stragglers coming in pitch black over the finish line and I was just like "well, I can go run 5 miles" or whatever it was that I went and did. I listened to my superhero music and felt kind of awesome.
Oh, and the olympics this year did give me a few "I want to go do something active" moments as well.
I guess I can credit rundisney trip reports for getting me wanting to run in the first place...so I still like to read them and will often just google a random dis-race and the word "review" or "recap"...that's usually pretty motivating.
And sorry if this is stereotypical, but getting anything run related in the mail post-online-shopping makes me over-eager to go for a run.

Looking forward to hearing what others say, so I can maybe use some of the suggestions.

ATTQOTD:

Movie: The Barkley Marathons documentary made me want to run an ultra. Not an ultra where briars pop up and hit me in the neck or where I need to run without sleep, but it made me want to push myself further.

Songs: Songs play more a part while I'm running. Thunderstruck will pump me up no matter where I am in a race, and it helps me get back on track if I'm faltering.

Nothing has ever made me want to jump up and go run though.

Random song related thought while I was running 9 miles the other night: Living on a Prayer rolling around on my playlist at the half way point of any run makes me as giddy as Eminem playing during mile 8. Both happening during the same run = perfect run.

My personality does not lend itself to this type of behavior. I have seen movies that inspired me, watched sporting events that inspired me, etc - but I have never been so inspired that I felt the need to run "right now". I have replayed parts of movies or games in my mind during runs to give me a "lift", and I often replay Alabama football games in my mind during my Sunday morning long runs. (Roll Tide!!!)

If I hear a song that makes me feel like running, I download it and add it to one of my running playlists.

ETA: I have seen or heard negative things that sent me out the door for a run, but that is because running is my way of eliminating stress, and it helps me deal with tough times.

I usually want to get out and run after reading about people running long distances or watching something like the Olympic Marathon or some other distance race on TV. I also want to run when I hear 'Guns and Ships' from Hamilton because it's one of the few songs on my running playlist that's also on my car playlist. I've never dropped anything to go running in those situations. I often use them to encourage me to keep on keeping on.

Also, I have another race on my calendar in October. It's a 5000 yard race (2.83mi) at Yards Brewing Co. I'm excited by the unique bling, a metal coaster/bottle opener, a glass, and a growler. The growler is because I'm running with my local running club and I'm 80% sure it's empty but it's still exciting.

09 - Anisum - 5000 Yards Dash (35:00 / N/A)

You got it! Red sparkle skirt optional but highly recommended.
I mean sparkle skirts seem like the key to any race.

All growlers are empty if you use them right.

@LSUlakes I have a run to add
@roxymama Christmas without Cancer 5k, Evegreen Park, IL October 1 2016 (TBD/NA)
It's just outside my door, literally, and likely will only have less than 100 people running and then way more walking. So likely sub-30 goal but not sure about going for a PR or anything. We shall see...I'll consult my coach later this month :)

ATTQOTD: I'm not sure if makes me want to go run "right now", but I love the movie McFarland. My husband and I have a tendency to incorporate lines from movies into our everyday speech and sometimes on a run if we are struggling we'll say, "That's not Danny Diaz! That's not Danny Diaz!" Works every time.

Yes, I have dropped everything and gone out for a run. Twice, in fact. Once was to stop an argument with Mrs. FFigawi (legal spouse, not running spouse) before things got really ugly and I said something I'd regret. The second time was to try to clear my head after my heart dog was put down.

Interesting question. I can't say I've ever had a book or movie that's made me want to go out and run. There are plenty of songs that I have listened to and been like man this would be great for a run. There are also motivational videos I have seen that help get me "hyped" but nothing that's made me drop everything and run.

ATTQOTD: No movie or song ever sends me out the door for a run. Stress does send me out the door occasionally, and as a SAHM there are plenty of times (particularly over summer break) I'd like to run out the door but can't since I am a responsible parent ;)

Read this article this morning and thought of the triathletes on this thread: Race with an Anaconda anyone? Not what you expect to find in Maine...
