The Running Thread - 2016

He did say I may need orthotics. I think there was talk on this thread about them previously so my question is, does anyone have them and does anyone run with them? Don't they move around when you run?
Not sure this helps, as I don't use custom orthotics and don't know what/where your injury is, but I deal with chronic peroneal tendonitis thanks to an old injury and CurrexSole insoles have been a total game-changer for me. I cut them to fit and they don't budge within my shoe at all.

QOTD: What is the longest distance you have traveled for a race in terms of both miles and travel time?

ATTQOTD: WDW: miles, 90ish. Time: 1.5 to 2 hours by car.

Spin off from yesterday's QOTD that I never answered... Shoes! I'm eyeballing a couple and thought I'd throw them up here and see what people think. I ran in the Brooks Ghost 7 for this year's marathon (and training) and it was fine: not amazing, not awful, but fine. I've got a pair of the Ghost 8s now and, again - they're fine, but not life-changing. I'm waiting to see what the Ghost 9s are like, but meanwhile... any thoughts on Nike Pegasus 32 and Brooks Launch 3?

I'm a total forefoot runner - like to an extreme. So Newtons feel amazing, but tend to mess with an old tendon injury because they reinforce that forefoot strike to an extreme. Altras are out because I need a higher heel thanks to that bad tendon, plus they're way too loose in the heel. The Ghost has done a good job of helping me land closer to midfoot, which is better for my ankles, knees and hips. But they're heavy. And bulky. And feel a bit like running in winter boots.

There are two kinds of cyclists. Those that have fallen and those that will. It's kind of inevitable that sooner or later you'll crash or fall over. It's why you wear a helmet. Even zero speed falls in the parking lot can hurt. :rolleyes1

Yep. I got my first crash out of the way early in my biking. As for zero speed falls, you are correct. In some ways they are worse than crashes at speed. My wife broke her arm in the driveway learning how to clip in and out of pedals.

For those of you who bike how did you get started? It's not like running where anyone with sneakers can give it ago until they get good shoes/clothes/etc for it. I would like to do tris (I think I've mentioned that before) but not being able to touch my feet to the ground terrifies me (my childhood bike was evidently poorly fitted because I used my feet as brakes) so I don't really want to spend the $$$ on a bike if it's not going work out.

Well, I biked a lot as a kid and then when I moved to Florida one of my friends had an extra bike so I went biking with him. It was a cheap Target bike but worked for what it was. I gradually started biking places I needed to go anyway and then decided I wanted to do a week of cycling in Italy. I hadn't done more then 20 miles at a time and ended up doing that for 5 days straight in Italy over some pretty challenging terrain. I was hooked and bought a road bike shortly after that. I do biking events around my house and we try to rent or bring our bikes on vacations.

QOTD: What is the longest distance you have traveled for a race in terms of both miles and travel time?

Cleveland to Anaheim for the Disneyland half in 2006. A little over 2,000 miles and I can't remember the travel time but I flew direct so probably around 6 hours each way.

ATTQOTD - I don't travel much for races, since my husband and I both run. We have to keep it local for childcare, and even that gets tough with no family locally.

Our furthest is the same for both distance and time: Richmond to Myrtle Beach (aunt and uncle live there) - 270 miles & appx 6 hours drive time with the gajillion stops made while in the potty training time

ATTQOTD:
Mileage - Chicago to WDW 1156.5 miles.
Travel time - Maybe a tie between WDW & two trips to Cincinatti, both times with toddler in the car. 5-6 hours, can't remember exactly.

I haven't tried the Pegasus in probably 10 years, but they have always been a consistently solid pair of shoes. I also haven't tried Brooks in a very long time, but my wife and daughter use the Glycerin 13s and love them.

I would add the Adidas Ultra Boost ST to your list to try. I know, Adidas??? That was my reaction as well. In any case, I just bought two pair and, so far, I really, really, really like them. They feel great on the feet, are middle of the road as far as weight, have an 8mm drop, are well-cushioned, but at the same time, you can still feel the road. I know cushioning and feeling-the-road don't really seem to mix, but you just have to try them to see what I mean. The downsides to these shoes are the price and potential fast wear on the thin outsole (although supposedly this has improved some since they switched to Continental rubber for the outsole). I am hopeful on the outsole wear front, but I've put less than 30 miles on mine so far, so only time will tell.

I'm waiting to see what the Ghost 9s are like, but meanwhile... any thoughts on Nike Pegasus 32 and Brooks Launch 3?

If the Brooks Launch 3 fit anything like the Brooks Launch 2, they are an amazing neutral, comfortable training shoe. I have 4 pair of the Brooks Launch 2... 1 just retired that I wear casually, 1 in my running rotation (along with a pair Brooks Launch 1), and 2 pair still in boxes because they are slowly disappearing from "the shelves". The moment I tried them on, I knew I liked them. After running in them, I liked them even more. I've heard the changes from the 2s to the 3s are more cosmetic. It's possible you can still find the 2s though. I know Brooks still has them online.

ATTQOTD: furthest I've travelled for a Running Event?

Dc to DL would be the furthest.
But DC to MCO/Orlando airport, Magical Express to WDW, walking to Bus to get to Epcot for 5k, 10k, HM, and Marathon, running Dopey, walking to Bus to get back to hotel, plus walking around all of the parks for 4 straight days......that has to add up to at least a million miles, right?

ATTQOTD: LAX to MCO is about 2200 "flight" miles. That's far enough for now! HA.

For those interesting, a store on Amazon has the FR 235 at 250 also, and at least for me, there is no tax/free shipping. I'm am impatient and plan to head to an REI store and pick it up in person. I'm telling myself it's because of the great return policy .... uh-huh yep. But that is true right? LOL

I unexpectedly found a new trail to run on yesterday. It was definitely different for me, but the uneven terrain made me slow way down. It seemed like it was grass that they have layered a ton of saw dust and wood chips over? What's interesting is that it disguised how hilly it was, although I should have know that since I'm familiar with the area! HA. I guess that it's good to vary my runs. I'll probably go back there, but maybe not the first run after sprints. :)

My next planned equipment purchase is a Garmin Edge Touring. It is more for getting out and exploring more places on my bike but will come in handy as I ramp up my bike miles.
Before you buy the Edge Touring you should check out the Edge 520. You can load maps on it as well. Reviews on it are very good, check DC Rainmaker. The Touring's big flaw for me is lack of ANT+ or Bluetooth, meaning you can'r pair speed and cadence sensors or power metres with it. That might be totally fine for you, but it was a real surprise to me when I was looking at them.

ATTQOTD: Arkadelphia, AR to WDW: Around 1000 miles, 5-6 hour flight as there are no direct flights for me, ever!
