The Running Thread - 2016

Ran the Inaugural Historical Hillsboro Half (doesn't the name seem like an oxymoron) Goal time was 1:45 and I finished 1:45:09. I was panting up one particularly long hill and thought man this was a bad choice for a POT race for my buddy. My friend looked and me and said you should have known it was gonna be tough "Hills" is right there at the front of the town name...

Training question for everyone. I'm coming up on the last long run in my marathon training (14 miles). It coincides with the Bull City Race Fest half marathon and I was thinking about running the race at training pace so I could test out a couple of changes (bib on shorts, increased fluid intake at aid stations) under race conditions prior to marathon day. Good idea? Bad idea?
I think it's a good idea. Others have posted that you shouldn't let yourself go out to fast. If that race has pacers you could get in with one of those. That could be another benefit.

I'm not a big fan of hills, either. As long as they're not like the ones in Umstead that the NCRC Half in May ran through it should be ok, though. Hope to see you there!

Umstead is where I did most of my training runs this summer. There are some brutal hills in there. The Umstead marathon is something that lots of people love.

I need suggestions for wireless headphones. I have been reading reviews but still not sure which brand to try. My personal trainer's son recommends the Beats brand but he doesn't use them for distance running.
I just hate to spend the money and end up being disappointed.

I've long been a fan of Yurbuds. I recently purchased the Yurbuds Liberty Wireless. They are my first wireless headphones and am definitely the like them a lot. I bought certified refurbished ones of Amazon for about 75% off retail price.

I highly recommend the AfterShokz Trekz bone conducting wireless headphones. They sit just in front of the ear and send the sound through the cheek bones to the inner ear. As a result there's nothing covering or plugging your ears, allowing you to hear your surroundings and stay a little cooler. It's a nice safety feature.

Ran a 16 miler today at my rD race pace. For some reason the first 3 miles were brutal. Then I found my groove a coasted through the rest of the run, but I was so worried about my first 3 miles that I never totally relaxed. My heart rate was only 144 throughout, so I don't think that I am over-trained right now, but I have not been sleeping well and that is a sign of over-training. I have a business trip to Michigan through Wednesday, so I'll take those days off and see if I feel better. I have only taken 3 days off in the last 130 days, so I probably need a break.

I am just being overly cautious since I got hurt so late in my Dopey training last year. Better safe than sorry.

@camaker @baxter24 and @IamTrike - I agree, hills suck! The only hilly race I did was my first half, so I automatically PR'd. lol The only advice I'd give (besides hill training) is to make sure it's ok to have the bib on your shorts for your race. My recent half they were very adamant that the bib be on the front of your shirt and made everyone move their bibs.

The results for my tiny local race are posted but there's definitely not enough people listed yet. I'm sitting at first in my age group but I kinda think there's no way that stays. They must need to add same day registrants or something. But for right now I'll bask in the glory. There were some very fast women in front of me of indistinguishable ages :)

Awesome! I've never placed before so I'm super jealous of you! :P I love your medal. Good thing you ended up doing that race!

You run 7 days a week? I thought 6 was hardcore. Eeks, I hate overtraining. It's the worst feeling: insomnia, poor appetite, irritability, elevated heart rate, inability to keep even slow pace. I think I had to take 2 weeks off. Sometimes it takes a while to get into a groove especially for long runs. Hopefully it's just a one off and you're not on the edge. But best safe than sorry!

Yeah, but remember that the vast majority of my mileage is at an easy pace. It really doesn't become a problem for me until/unless I push myself too much, meaning that I increase the number of "hard" days/week. I am actually better off physically and mentally if I run every day.

I knew that I was in a bit of trouble though when my Garmin suggested recovery time after my 7 mile tempo run on Thursday was 65 hours. :scared: Typically my suggested recovery time is less than 12 hours after an easy run, and about 26 hours after a tempo run. I thought it was a glitch, but apparently it wasn't.

I hated those hills during the half in May. So much I probably won't run that course again. I'll take your word on people's liking it, I've found the opposite to be true! That could be why it was one of the smallest halfs I've run, I guess.

Well marathon #9 is in the books. It was a tough run for me. Still able to nail a PR at 3:23:43 and nail new PRs regardless of race distance for overall place %, gender place %, and division place %. Surprisingly 28.6% of people who started the race did not finish. Tough day! Hoping my left leg heals well enough to get back to training for Dopey, but I'll be taking a cautious approach.

Haven't had a chance yet to read your recap, looking forward to it! I hope the leg issue is minor and disipates with some recovery time. Which by the way, you have totally earned!!! Congrats! I believe that running is more about the journey than the destination, but given what you just accomplished I think you should consider yourself a hard worked traveler who now deserves to enjoy some time on vacation! Great job @DopeyBadger.

Thanks! I think everyone in the family is looking forward to two weeks off from any running (pre-planned). More GiGi time is always a good thing! :flower1:

Just catching up......

Bad smells>goose poop is typically all over my road early in the morning and it's awful to step in. Trash day not too great. And somebody has a propane gas smell that just doesn't seem right (I have told them about it), but hard to beat the porta-potties and the WDW treatment plant for overall bad smells.

Tasty treats-I can't remember them all but one of the best was a cupcake from Planet Pizza decorated with a little tiny Baymax. Cute and tasty.

September mileage-can I use smaller font for this one? My goal was to run 170 miles and I did 10.2 miles on just 2 runs and no crosstraining workouts.
I hurt my knee on August 19th and doctor wanted no running for 6 weeks which is officially over---NOW. Yay. But it still hurts.
I hope to do some cautious and easy runs this week and try to get back in shape in time for a respectable finish for my November marathon.

Congrats everybody for your mileage during the month.

Gigi is absolutely adorable! I have two daughters both older now at 14 and 9, they are a light in my life. Seeing your pictures really took me back. Take care of that leg!

I ran only 8 today and that's how I was. My first 3 miles were rough and then I found my groove and had a nice final 5 miles.

Re: wireless headphones. I have Jaybird BlueBuds X, which are a generation before the current ones, X2. I love them. I have had them for 2 years now and they are still going strong, battery still lasts a good 5-6 hours.

RE: Headphones - A couple of months ago, I tried a bunch of inexpensive bluetooth ones, and found that even if they were fine inside, the sound would go choppy when trying to run in them. I ended up with a pair of Jaybird X2s that seem to work pretty well and only cut out very rarely. I think they've been discontinued, as I was able to get them at a fairly significant markdown from Best Buy. (~$75)

Weekend run - Saturday was scheduled for my longest run before my half this coming weekend. My left calf/ankle was bothering me a bit and it got really bad around 7.5 miles in, which forced me to stop the run early. I'm currently limping and hoping that it'll recover enough for me to be able to run this weekend. In the meantime, I'm resting, foam rolling, and wearing a brace. I've had a 10 miler and a couple of 8+ in the training regimen to date, so I think my base is there for the half, it's just a question of where I'll be in the healing process.

September's mileage total was 80.24, with an average pace in the 10:30 range.

September miles: 44.1
Yoga: 4 sessions
Strength training: ~4 sessions (I started w 2 sessions/week, and seemed to have fallen off the wagon! Back on today!)
Pace: Started at ~11:30-40 after a few weeks with a sore knee, but as the month went on and my knee felt better (and the weather cooled down!), I ended up with an average pace around 10:30.

Congrats on all the PRs. Hoping your leg is fine and just needs rest. Gigi time sounds great! That way rest turns out to be a good time!

RE: bad smells> Chicken litter placed on fields for fertilizer! It's tough to breathe!
