The Running Thread - 2016

Sept Totals:

Miles : 179.95
duration : 27:18:18
pace : 9:06

I had the worst run of my life before we left for WDW. Out of the 18 miles, I had to do walk/run intervals for 9 miles. And, most of those were predominately walk. It was extremely hot, and I needed to take extra salt pills. I wound up having the worst muscle cramps. If I were to take that run out, my average pace would drop to 8:51. Crazy. Thank goodness I hd a great 20 miler last weekend to build my confidence back up.

Training question for everyone. I'm coming up on the last long run in my marathon training (14 miles). It coincides with the Bull City Race Fest half marathon and I was thinking about running the race at training pace so I could test out a couple of changes (bib on shorts, increased fluid intake at aid stations) under race conditions prior to marathon day. Good idea? Bad idea?

If you're tapering, make sure you can hold yourself back. I struggle with this thanks to my competitive nature and the hype of a race. I ran a half during one of my fall back weeks last year thinking it wouldn't impact me much. I wound up setting a PR, and I definitely felt it when I ran my 20 miler the next week. It was a struggle. I was glad I made that mistake during training and not before my marathon.

Good idea. It's a fully supported training run as long as you hold yourself back to your training pace.

If you decide to do the race, maybe I will see you out there! Excited about the race but not looking forward to the hills!

I'm not a big fan of hills, either. As long as they're not like the ones in Umstead that the NCRC Half in May ran through it should be ok, though. Hope to see you there!

Sept mileage 150.5 (Lumiere's challenge training) I've been slowly building mileage since like March and so each month is just a little more than the last so have not been hurting myself running, but I take photos of kids/families/etc and always end up over stretching something to 'get the picture', so my October goal is take photos "smart" & not hurt myself being careless in everyday stuff:)

QOTD: Lets discuss "official race photos". Do you buy them or plan to at any point? Do you look at them to check on your running form? If so, did you see something in them to where you got a video taken on you running to see your form in more detail to try to change it up any? Or do you just look at them and wonder why in the heck am I making such a strange face? Any other type of info you try to gather from them?
Getting caught up here - I love pictures and videos at races. I'm lucky where I live - two of the major event organizers in the area employ quality photographers who take tons of pics and upload all of them for people to download for free - my Facebook feed has a bunch of them. Egged on by my family and FB friends, I mug for the camera shamelessly to the point where I will change from my normal pitter-patter feet low-to-the-ground rapid shuffle-slide stride to an exaggerated bouncy bounding stride in an effort to get my favorite levitation pose with both feet in the air. I pace my races so that I can sprint at the end, and keep a sharp look-out for the finish photographer as well as "competitors" that I can race to the finish against for the always cool me-as-Usain-Bolt winning sprint pic. That said, I do respect the space around fellow runners so that they can get good pics too.

On a related note, I'd like to provide a literal response to an earlier QOTD concerning "running naked". For you gents out there I propose a new Man Law - before acting on the urge to run shirtless especially in races, first float that idea past a trusted loved one. If that trial balloon gets shot down with extreme prejudice coupled with peals of laughter, there's probably a message worth listening to somewhere in there. As in, don't be that guy with the tummy in everyone else's race pictures. And no, I won't be running "naked" anytime soon...

QOTD: What are some unpleasant smells that you have experienced while out for a run? (Could be a race or training run)
For long runs/races where I'm wearing a belt, as part of my personal care kit (chewable aspirin, mini-body glide, etc.) I pack an itty-bitty thing of hand lotion. If I encounter stinky places (like the WDW treatment plant) I dab a little under the nose and it does a good job masking the odor.

Yikes, I am so glad I waited until after my little procedure today. If you have turned 50, you probably have a good idea what I had today..... 36 hours of no food was torture!
Been there done that. There's nothing quite like that first Egg McMuffin on the ride home (if you did a morning procedure) as long as you're not feeling nauseous from the anesthetic...

September
Mileage: 29.3 miles
Pace: 10-11 min per mile

I slacked off the last couple weeks. First it was a cold, then it was getting used to all my daughter's activities. I was happy though to get in a nice 4 miler today while she had practice, so off to a nice start. Started Pilates on Tues (never took a class like that, so a bit different and challenging in a whole new way), so excited to see if that helps with stretching and injury prevention. I may have to do a training journal to keep me accountable as a race I was aiming for falls the same weekend as my daughter's first swim meet so that's a no go.

Good job everyone on their training, here's to a great October!

I met my goal of "finish" for our local 5k this morning. Hubby and I ran whole thing together at the pace my training plan had for me today and crossed finish line hand in hand. Got a medal we didn't know we'd be getting (score!), grabbed our gear check (aka free tshirts) and then kept on going to finish my mileage home. So snuck a race in the middle of my training, haha! Also it rained on us and I didn't melt so that was a victory.image.jpg

I'm not going to post my September miles because it was embarassingly low. I've definitely got to ramp it up in October with Lumiere in only 5 weeks (without overdoing it of course and risking injury). Fortunately, the weather is finally settling into a fall pattern, so I hope sticks around so I can get some good runs in.

@DopeyBadger Good luck tomorrow in the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon! I never ended up signing up to volunteer :( but I can't wait to hear how it goes! As long as the rain moves out, it should be good weather since it's supposed to be overcast. I've heard really good things about the Lakefront Marathon, so if I ever decide to go for one and Disney doesn't work out, this would be one of the choices. :)

Thanks! On my way!

The results for my tiny local race are posted but there's definitely not enough people listed yet. I'm sitting at first in my age group but I kinda think there's no way that stays. They must need to add same day registrants or something. But for right now I'll bask in the glory. There were some very fast women in front of me of indistinguishable ages :)
