The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: During a trail run recently I was going across a footbridge. It had been raining and the bridge was slick. I put my right foot down and slide right off the edge of the bridge ending up in knee deep pond water and weeds. Almost lost my shoes trying to get out of that goopy water!

Worst part I still had several miles to get back to the car, very squishy miles.

Yikes, that sucks. I hope they get it together. I'm pulling for you to place!! Do they give out anything special? My last half, they gave coffee cups to the division winners.
Thanks! I have no idea what is going on with the results, other than it poured during the race and maybe they had snafus with the timing??? The awards were small Christmas ornaments and I'm sure they already handed them out (we didn't stay for the award ceremony) so I really have no idea. I may be the annoying person who emails them by the end of the week, but I'm afraid of a bruised ego if I'm like way down the list in actual placement :)

ATTQOTD: All my accidents so far are while walking around and not related to running..yet. Unless there's something I've blocked out and am forgetting. I do bruise myself at least twice a week running into walls or tables...not running related.

ATTQOTD: I was out running with one of the dogs and he saw something he wanted and took off. I had a tight grip on the leash so he jerked me forward and it was one of those falls where you keep trying to catch yourself moving forward. I face planted on the asphalt, hit my chin, palms, elbows and knees. On a running path a mile from home at 6:00am, no one else around and no cell phone. Plus I had to catch the dog before I could crawl home, lol. Not embarrassed to say I bawled all the way home. Worst damage was to my chin and palms. Asphalt and skin to not go well together!

I need suggestions for wireless headphones. I have been reading reviews but still not sure which brand to try. My personal trainer's son recommends the Beats brand but he doesn't use them for distance running.
I just hate to spend the money and end up being disappointed.

I have used a pair of Photive Sport wireless headphones I bought from amazon. They have worked great for about year, but recently they have started to cut out much more frequently. So basically, I wouldn't recommend these ;)

So for anyone wondering I often pull QOTD from personal experiences. I figured if I had an experience its likely someone here has as well and learning how they handled the situation can help me out as well as those who may not have yet had a similar experience can learn what to or not to do. Well, todays QOTD will be one of those. I am going to show just how goofy I am.

QOTD: Have you ever had a accident while out for a run? (This isn't bathroom related, but if that's a story you want to share, go for it!)

I feel like I have to knock on wood after reading all of these accident stories! So far nothing too bad has happened to me. I have stepped funny in my stride a couple of times, and my foot felt all twingy (pretty sure I just made this word up) for a day or so. I also slipped on ice while training for Princess this past winter, but didn't get very hurt.

September milage: 75.5 Not quite what I had planned, but still an improvement from August. Also, I still am doing more easy treadmill runs than I would like. Hopefully I will be ready for my half in 2 1/2 weeks!

I've had small accidental trips and near misses but knock on wood, nothing serious. On another note, my running did not go well this weekend. I was supposed to do 9 but ended up only doing 3 because I was having sharp pain in my right knee. It hurt when I ran, didn't hurt when I walked, and was worse on the hills. Sadly, now it hurts all the time, i.e. even just doing my normal walking around :( I'm taking advil and plan to ice it when I get home from work. I'm crossing my fingers that it gets better because I'm signed up for a 10 miler this weekend. The good news is that I think the race doesn't have a lot of hills. Worse case scenario, I'm hoping I can just take some advil before the race and it will carry me through to the end?

QOTD: Have you ever had a accident while out for a run?

I run a lot of trails, so "accidents" happen every couple of weeks. They usually involve tree roots or stumps and me staring up at the canopy. Only scrapes fortunately as I have learned how to be like Buzz and "fall with style". Trail runners know what I'm talking about :)

July 4th 5K last year - ran off the trail to get around som walkers with a stroller who thought they should be up at the front. Tripped on a rock I didn't see in the grass and fully bit it on the gravel ...

ATTQOTD: The only accident I had was when we were doing one of our last runs before Goofy in 2015. It was December and right around freezing temps. We were running across a bridge and hit a patch of black ice and my husband and I both went down hard. I was panicking once I hit the ground thinking that we were leaving for Florida in less than a week. Luckily other than a bruised hip though, I was okay as was my husband. PHEW!

This is exactly what happened to me - one week before the Disney Marathon this year. Heading out for my 8 miler and slipped on some ice, just like in the cartoons - feet up in the air and came crashing down on my right butt cheek. I thought my dreams of running my first marathon were over, but fortunately a week later I was okay, just a softball sized bruise every color of the rainbow.

September mileage: 93 miles, plus yoga 2 to 3 times a week. As always, my totals should be a little more, but family obligations have to come first.

Congrats @DopeyBadger on your marathon PR's!!!

ATTQOTD: I have fallen three times during runs. Twice just scuffed a knee and my hands. The thrid time was the worst. Wiped out on some lose pebbles on the road, and fell hard and scuffed my hands, knees and knocked my head pretty good during a weekend long run. Luckily there was not much blood. I was about 3 miles from the car, so slowly started walking using my water to wash my head and hands. As I started getting closer, I was able to add some jogging in to get back to the car quicker.

QOTD: I have not fallen on a run yet but on my bike, yes. At the bottom of my hill that goes onto a busy road I hit sand as I was turning. Down I went. Thankfully I didn't end up in the road or I would have been hit. I caught myself on my hands and it bent my front wheel. That was the extent of the damage.

I went to PT today and since I have yet to ask the PT when she thinks I can't start running I decided to ask her. She told me to plan on February to be safe. HUH? Did you say February? I told her I was going to kill my doctor because every timeline he gave me has been doubled at least. He told me out of work 3-5 weeks and running by November. I have been out of work 10 weeks so far and now running in February. She explained why its better to wait, and I understand it but still.

I was running after a thunderstorm one afternoon and came to a spot on the sidewalk next to a hill with a lot of water flowing over it. Rather than splash through the water I elected to run on the uphill slope for a few steps in hopes of staying a little drier. Bad choice. I stepped on the slope with the side of my foot and it gave way. Ended up being a total wipeout with mud covering the entire right side of my body and legs. Fortunately nothing was injured but my pride.

This, for sure. I do most of my running on trails, and every trail runner suffers once in a while.

ATTQOTD: Funny, the first time I really almost ate it while running was last week during my "easy return to running week". Luckily I got my feet under me at the last minute. It was on cracked asphalt, so I don't want to know how bad that would have turned out.

However, I'm notoriously clumsy and will trip on air while walking.

ATTQOTD- nothing major but I have had several running accidents over the years.......try to withhold laughter until the end of the presentation:

1>running under a bridge and stepped in a pothole at MCM....twisted ankle.....pain arrived.....limped along for a while before walking last 6 miles
2>out for a scheduled run in my neighborhood and took the turn at a cul-de-sac too wide and ran into a mailbox (just like the cartoons!)
3>about a month later, ran into same mailbox!
4>not sure how to categorize this and I really hate to share this again........fell out of a porta-potty at the Shamrock HM in Va. Beach......opened the door and missed the curb and just went down and rolled over on my back. Got quite a few cheers from the crowd. Luckily it has not surfaced on YouTube.

ATTQOTD - no major accidents, but I've fallen a few times (not in any recent years luckily) & rolled my ankle plenty of times (actual just a few weeks ago did this) but luckily I guess I've done it enough it bounces back okay. Some of you have sure had some painful falls, ouch! Now in real life, I tend to have lots of accidents like running into walls, shelves & rolling my ankle stepping out the door. I think I'm safer while running :)
