The Running Thread - 2016

Wishing you the best on your work issue. Hoping it's something you can work through and minimize the effects of the mistake.

As far as your work issue, I know how you feel - I have been there before. Not a good feeling, but as I remind myself, it's not the mistake but how you respond that shows the type of person you are. Plus, even though it seems huge at the time, in the long run, it may not be as big as you are thinking right now. As my wife asks, "is anybody going to die because of your mistake?" She is always good about keeping things in perspective.

Thanks folks. Its a finical cost at a estimated $500k. If it was my company I would fire me for it. Its such a terrible job market right now to is what really has me concerned.

Sorry for not keeping it to running this morning.

QOTD: What is the latest you ever decided to go out for a run?
When I decided to run my first marathon because I had fallen into bad habits and gained weight, I ran when I could. It took me a few months to develop a reliable schedule. During that period I regularly ran after work, but only once made the mistake of running after dinner. My latest run during that period was probably at around 9 at night.

I am a morning person, so I run almost exclusively in the morning. I sometimes get up as early as 3am to run if there is a need. This would make it hard for me to hang with @Keels since I am almost always in bed by 9pm.

QOTD: What is the latest you ever decided to go out for a run?

I don't think I've ever gone for a run past 8:00-8:30. I am not a big fan of running in the dark and in the summer time the temperature doesn't drop fast enough to make the later running that much more appealing.

ATTQOTD: I started one around 10pm last month and was surprised to see a few other runners and dog walkers out and about. It's always interesting to see the different times of the day people choose to get out. When I lived in Houston, I'd drive by Memorial Park which has a 3 mile crushed granite loop and it didn't matter the time of day or even weather condition, you'd almost always see at least one person running on the loop.

@LSUlakes - Hang in there bud, it will get better.

I was working late trying to get to bottom of a huge mistake I made about 8 weeks ago that has just surfaced. I was hoping it was an error else where, but unfortunately the majority of the blame is on me. I did not rest well last night and feel sick to my stomach. I am not sure what is going to happen or how long its going to take but I don't see things working out for me.
I am a director and have worked at two of the largest multi-national firms in the world. My advice - calm down and with a calm mind determine exactly what happened, how & why it happened, and what you can do to ensure that it will never happen again. Also, understand that the consequences are out of your control, so try and put them out of your mind. If you melt down you are less likely to survive. Stand tall and confident, taking responsibility while also believing that you are the best person for the job. Everyone makes mistakes. I have no idea what this one will cost you, but you will be fine as long as you don't let it define you.

QOTD: What is the latest you ever decided to go out for a run?

ATTQOTD: 11:29 PM last night for 4 miles. I was working late trying to get to bottom of a huge mistake I made about 8 weeks ago that has just surfaced. I was hoping it was an error else where, but unfortunately the majority of the blame is on me. I did not rest well last night and feel sick to my stomach. I rarely run in the evenings. I have a hard enough time falling asleep as it is, working out late at night keeps me awake longer. I would go out at 7 at the latest I think.

I'm sorry you're going through work stress @LSUlakes. I hope things turn up for you!

ATTQOTD: I couldn't tell you when my latest run has been. The only time I run during the day is on weekends and when I'm able to run at work. Most of my runs don't start until 8:30 pm or later. I'm a night owl by nature, so it works for me. I have a Noxgear vest, and I run with pepper spray. Plus thanks to my aunt and uncle and years of martial arts training under them, I can defend myself.

@LSUlakes I have no words of wisdom or advice. I'm keeping you in my prayers though.

Right after I hit enter I remembered my training runs during our Disney vacation last year. According to Garmin, I started a 9 mile run at 9:53 PM. That was the night I wound up running with some random lady. She told me she felt guilty after seeing me out there when she came back to the resort that night. She hadn't been getting in any running, but I gave her the inspiration to quit making excuses. I was pretty pumped after hearing that.

I was afraid this would be over 300 pages after being gone for two weeks! Too many QOTDs to go through!

Getting off the plane in Houston yesterday after being in Europe for two weeks was a cruel slap in the face. Was not ready for 90+ degree temps amd humidity again.

The Harmony of the Seas was an awesome ship that did not feel like it had over 6000 people on board. The only fight with crowds we had was getting off the ship at the Rome port and having to fight the masses to get on a bus to get out of the port. Both my boys almost got crushed as a mass of people tried to arrange themselves to get on a bus as one pulled up. The port did not seem to believe in a queueing system for the buses.

The aqua theater show on the ship was about the best show we have seen on a cruise. Grease was the broadway show on board and it was entertaining as expected.

I did go for a run one evening on the ship while at sea. On most cruise ships, it is anywhere from 6 to 12 laps to go a mile. On the Harmony, it was 2.4 laps. 12 laps just about equaled 5 miles. For fun, I used my GPS while running, and based on it, I was running about 3:30 miles, a 5k in just over 10 minutes, and 10k in just over 20....needless to say I reset my new PRs on the watch post-run.

I think it usually sells out but I'm not sure how long it takes. Looks like they take around 330 and maybe 60 or so slots already gone.
There was a marathon in Western NC that I was hoping to sign up for this year. It's a smaller local race and it sold out in minutes so I missed it.

Not really sure. I've done some really early morning runs helping friends that are training for 100 milers.

I hate to hear that the work stuff is stressing you out. I know how hard it is when you realize you made a mistake that caused a problem. I'm no sure what industry your in, or the type of mistake but I'd second Buckey's advice, Stay Calm, Identify what went wrong and Identify what you can do to prevent it in the future. Own your mistake and show them you've got a path forward.

Another way to look at it is they just invested 500k in you and you are really unlikely to make the same type of mistake again. If they fill your role with someone else that person could make the same mistake. As an employee it can be really easy to see your mistakes and your faults, but sometimes miss how valuable you are to the people that you work for. How much have you contributed to revenue? How long would it take to train someone so that they have the domain expertise and organizational knowledge that you have? If you are a quality person, quality people can be hard to come by. I don't know what they are going to do, but it sounds like you've at least got the right attitude. I hope that things work out for you.

Being a female living in the city, I don't usually run after dark. my last late night run was in 2014 After the Boston Marathon Bombing manhunt, Boston and surrounding communities were in lock down so I was coop up in the house all day watching news about the man hunt. By late evening when the lock down was lifted, I felt very jittery and went for a run past midnight. At that time, news were reporting that the bomber was being rushed to a hospital in Cambridge, but as I ran towards the Longwood Medical area, I saw this convoy of ambulances and police cars, turns out the bomber was going to the medical area. So I probably witnessed the bomber in the ambulance.

@LSUlakes..I hope the work situation resolves without much damage.

ATTQOTD: Latest was probably around 10pm and that's when I drove to a gym to run on their treadmill.

@LSUlakes I hope everything works out. I know it's an awful feeling when you make a huge mistake. At least you're taking personal responsibility and attempting to rectify things as best you can.

ATTQOTD: I pretty much never run in the evenings. I think maybe I've done a few 5 PM type of runs (although not in summer months). The latest I've ever run a race was this past year for Wine & Dine. I have horrible runs when I run at night.

ATTQOTD: I am not a night time runner. I can't think of the last time I ran in the evening at home... the only time I can think of was the shakeout run I did at the POFQ/POR paths after I arrived for W&D last year.

The latest I have started a run is about 10pm. I have started as early as 3am but that was after sleeping so doesn't count.

@LSUlakes many of your posts have shown a strong commitment to doing good work and being career minded. I am sorry to hear about this new stress you are facing at work. I can only imagine how difficult this is for you. Sending you good wishes for a positive outcome.

QOTD: What is the latest you ever decided to go out for a run?

Never been able to make time for evening runs. With three kids ages 5 and under, our evenings are busy. I am not opposed to running at night but it is currently easier for me to run early in the morning before the kids wake up or during their afternoon naps. Props to people who can run late at night. I am usually too wiped out to accomplish much after the kids are in bed.

QOTD: What is the latest you ever decided to go out for a run?
I don't like to run in the dark. I think the latest I've run is maybe 6-7PM in the summer time when it's still light out during that time. I also don't have the gear to make myself seen in the dark so that's another reason I don't run at night.

I use Backbeat Fit by Plantronics:

Sound is excellent. Battery life is great. I find them to be comfortable and you can even take calls from them while you are running if you need to. I have actually had people not know I was talking through my headphones when I had to use them.

I've had these for over a year and really like them. They've been flawless and have no issues in rain.

Sounds like a great trip! I just booked a cruise on Allure for February, and I hope the track is similar to Harmony's!
