The Running Thread - 2016

Trying to catch up after a hot and lazy weekend. I had every intention of running, but when I got up Saturday morning I realized I forgot my running shoes. In fact, I forgot shoes of any sort, had nothing but flip flops. It turns out the shoes were just one of many things I had forgotten to pack, poor kids had no syrup for their pancakes either.o_O

I've never tried a virtual run, but the Harry Potter one is tempting!

I don't drink a lot of pop (that's what we call soda in these parts), but I do love a regular Coke every now and then, especially with pizza.

When my kids were really little, we would put them to bed at 8:00pm and then I would head out for a run after that. At the time I was only running 2 to 4 miles. I can't imagine running that late now, especially any longer than that.

Speaking of soft drink, I have noticed people have a lot of different names for them. We have always just called any type of soft drink a coke. As in, what kind of coke do you want to drink? It is my observation, that southerners are very loyal coke drinkers as opposed to Pepsi.

ATTQOTD: I have started runs in the middle of the night a couple times during Ragnars, but you just have take those as they come. I never really run at night for just a training run. I'm comfortable with running in the dark but I never really have any reason to go out too late.

I think it depends on where you are in the south. Coke is based in Atlanta, so I think that leads to some of the loyalty. Pepsi was developed here in North Carolina, though, so it tends to have a pretty strong following locally. Also, Cheerwine has a (relatively) strong presence here as another local product, although not nearly as strong as Coke/Pepsi...

ATTQOTD: I run solely (heh, get it?) in the mornings. I don't trust the drivers in my neighborhood not to mow me down at night, even if I am wearing reflective gear.

So I had a strong run this morning. Ran my fastest mile since I got my Garmin and I felt I was just going at a normal pace, not pushing it. I think my legs were thanking me for taking a rest day on Monday.

ATTQOTD: I think the latest I have done a training run is about 8 p.m., but only going to the track. I do not trust my neighborhood enough to go that late anywhere else. Even when the lights go off (that happened to me once) I feel safer there than anywhere else. Mostly because I'm not alone.

We call it pop here in Canada

My parents are from upstate NY (Rochester) and also called it Pop. I was born in California, but also called it pop for a very long time. All of my friends looked at me like I was an alien. LOL

I haven't run since last Thursday because of the heat, so I told myself I was going to get up early and run before work. Guess who had the best sleep in weeks and didn't move until the SECOND alarm went off? LOL. So, I wore my Sparkle Skirt to work (it's patterned, it can pass. Plus, I don't really leave my desk.) as extra motivation that I will run after work NO MATTER WHAT.

I grew up loving Mello Yello, then switched to Mt Dew. Was never much of a Coke or Pepsi guy. But I agree, most folks where I grew up drank Coke.

Now I drink mostly water, and I avoid calories in my liquids.

In the Philly/NJ/NYC areas (I've lived in both) we also call it 'soda' but we pronounce it more like 'so-dah' or 'so-duh'

When I decided to run my first marathon because I had fallen into bad habits and gained weight, I ran when I could. It took me a few months to develop a reliable schedule. During that period I regularly ran after work, but only once made the mistake of running after dinner. My latest run during that period was probably at around 9 at night.

I am a morning person, so I run almost exclusively in the morning. I sometimes get up as early as 3am to run if there is a need. This would make it hard for me to hang with @Keels since I am almost always in bed by 9pm.

At 3 a.m., we would be two ships passing in the night ... that's usually when I'm heading off to sleep.

Growing up in California, we call it soda (and my mom rarely let us drink it lol). We would make fun of our Minnesota cousins who would call it pop ;)

QOTD: What is the latest you ever decided to go out for a run?

ATTQOTD: 11:29 PM last night for 4 miles. I was working late trying to get to bottom of a huge mistake I made about 8 weeks ago that has just surfaced. I was hoping it was an error else where, but unfortunately the majority of the blame is on me. I did not rest well last night and feel sick to my stomach. I am not sure what is going to happen or how long its going to take but I don't see things working out for me.

I'm a nighttime runner in the summers, and I've gone out as late as 10 pm when I had to in order to get it in. Sometimes my husband will skateboard around the neighborhood with me if it's dark so I'm not alone.

@LSUlakes, best wishes... I'm glad you could get out for a run.

I think like 9:00. I'm normally an early morning runner, but I was getting back from a Christmas week long break and I drove back home from my in-laws. My wife and kids stayed up because (ironically) we had about 4 days before we left for our Disney vacation and Marathon weekend. Anyway, I thought I would have been home earlier and kicked myself for not running in the morning. I however was bound determined to get a run in.

Hope that mistakes clears up. It'll all work out in the end. Hope you can rest easy tonight.

ATTQOTD: not a fan of night runs. Latest I've started is 6:30. I'm a morning person:)

Up here in New England it's "soda", pronounced "sew-der" :)

Where I grew up in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts all drinks like coke, Pepsi, Sprite etc. were called "tonic". No clue why. Practice seemed to stop with people my age (40s)who generally call it soda. But my parents aunts, uncles etc., all call it tonic.

Thanks to everyone for the positive thoughts. I ended up getting to talk to my boss late this afternoon, and he appreciated my honesty on what was taking place. He assured me that this was a valuable lesson learned and I do not to fear the loss of my job. In reality we could restock the pipe and fittings, but we would end up losing about half of the investment due to fees. The other option is to keep it in our laydown yard and wait for a job to come along and use it. I had a opportunity to try to place blame else where, but if I was doing work by the book, this would not have happened. I learned that just because I am told to hurry up and put in the order, the extra time required to CMA is much less than doing it in a hurry. It was a very long day, and I am still at the office catching up on lost time on my newest project. I am going to go for a run soon, but I am tired and not sure if I will get in the total 6 miles tonight... Again, thanks again for listening to my personal problems and the kind words.

Yeah, that's another regional thing that centered around Boston (eastern MA, southern NH/ME). My experience in Seacoast NH is the same, although my mom and dad (mid-60's) don't call it that, and neither do I (40), but my older relatives all did.

I wonder if it didn't come from back when stuff like Moxie was marketed as medicinal drinks. Speaking of another regional thing that all my older relatives drank... :)
