The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: Injuries happen from time to time. What was your last injury and what was the last problem? How long did it take to recover from it?

As others have said, nothing major. Just the normal aches and pains for a 57 year old. I am not trying to be a speed demon in training or on the course. Just trying to stay healthy.

ATTQOTD: I have not volunteered...mainly because the races that I am interested in, I run them. If for some reason I couldn't run them, then I would certainly volunteer.

Todays QOTD was another great suggestion from a fellow poster. Thanks again!

QOTD:Has anyone volunteered for a race before? What was your experience and would you do it again? I am still deciding if I want to wake up early two days in a row but am intrigued. Anyone know what a race monitor does?.

I am only a couple of hours away from Disney World. I would love to volunteer at the RD events if I am not running them. The sign up process is just as crazy as runner sign up. Very limited spots and you have to be sitting at your computer right when the window opens.

I will soon start volunteering at local 5k's and sprint triathlon's.

(Of course, knowing my total inability to estimate how far I am from home, odds are my planned 20 will wind up being 21ish anyway, lol!)
I always map my runs out in Strava before my runs so I don't have to try and do mental math, I'd be completely terrible at judging where I was! :) I usually try and plan them a little long, though, since they never seem to end up quite the same in the watch vs in the route map, plus Strava is the worst sometimes and always rounds you down. I have so many runs that end up like right on the nose distance wise or like 9.96 and Strava rounds them down to 0.9! ;)

I have volunteered for a race! As part of my dad being a high school baseball coach the team and families volunteered at the Milwaukee Running Festival full marathon this past year. Our jobs were just watching intersections that runners would be going by incase cars in the area some how snuck through. I know Mike and Michelle from the Mickey Milers volunteered for the 5K and Full in January this year. They then did a podcast on their experience volunteering with one of the volunteering directors.

ATTQOTD: Well, I'm the one who asked the question :) I am running a 10k this Saturday morning and then have the new opportunity to volunteer for the marathon with my cousin (who is doing it through her travelling basketball team) on Sunday morning. I think you may be right that "race monitors" will be the people along the course waving runners the correct way. I have to decide if I want to do it though soon.
I really want to volunteer for the Chicago marathon this year since I am not running it and I know a lot of people who are.

[QUOTE="ebradley23,: . I volunteer to run with a local group called Inclusive Racing at least once or twice a year though. I am part of a team pushing a disabled athlete in an adaptive stroller. ..... Loaning my legs so someone can experience racing is one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had.
/QUOTE]

That is so Awesome!! I have seen similar groups pushing adaptive stroller athletes at other races and always admired their efforts. Can only imagine what a great experience it is for the team and the athlete. You rock!

I just volunteered as a course marshal this past weekend. I was making sure runners stayed on course for both the half marathon and the 10K, but more than anything I was there to cheer the runners on. I shouted encouragement, handed out licorice and held up vehicle traffic...it was a lot of fun!

@Waiting2goback thank you for posting that training plan. I am going to switch over to that one as I think it will get me ready at a better rate. And if I start it next week it works perfectly as I have 18 weeks until my marathon! I was looking at the other plans on his site and am thinking of doing the Novice 2 between my Sept marathon and the WDW Full as there are 18 weeks in between those also. Thanks again!

@PrincessV Thanks for your input! I'm going to switch to the Hal Higdon Novice 1 plan and top out at 20 (although I may also stretch that to 22). It is very helpful to know that only going to 20/22 works for you guys and that makes me confidant that it will work for me too! :)

My pleasure. I just want to point out that the biggest thing to take from PrincessV's posts are that it is OK to be flexible with your training. If you put in the work consistently and hit the majority of your long runs then you will be fine. If you have to adjust a little here and there it is OK.

I just had one of the most painful runs I have had in a long time. I think I hit the mileage limit on this pair of sneakers. I didn't get nearly as much miles out of the Cumulus as the Nimbus. It didn't help that it's 40' and rainy here today. Then I got home and tortured myself on the foam roller. As it usually happens when I have a bad run I questioned many of my goals for the year.

Follow up ATTQOTD: I almost forgot about my worst running injury. During training, my toenail was weak. I went to a petting zoo with my family wearing flip flops (first mistake). I was attempting to keep a bunch of goats from getting loose (second mistake), and I kicked a fence on accident. The nail on my big toe peeled up, but didn't shear all the way off. Lots of blood and yuck. Four days later, I had to run my first 18 miler. Trying to leave the nail on made running unbearable, so I performed my own nailectomy the night before. It was awful, and I probably should have used a rag to bite down on like I was having a bullet removed in the movies. My family still refers to it as my "goat toe" and my kid would walk past and bleat at me if I wasn't wearing shoes.

That is an awesome injury story! Major props!!!!!

I have volunteered for a few local 5K's. It was very inspiring to see kids, families running. Everyone was very positive and I got more thank you than I earned; outside having to get up so early. I do have to say it was hard to not be running in the races though. I would love to volunteer at a RunDisney event someday.

Just a reminder, today registration opens up for WDW marathon weekend. Let us know how it goes this year and good luck getting the race you want.

I was able to get registered in 7 minutes. Saw the green running man for only about 1 minute and then I was in. It went really smoothly and now I am set for my second Dopey! Good luck to everyone still trying to get registered.

ATTQOTD: I volunteered for Tink last year (my first and only so far) for the kid's races. I'm local to DL and get a little sad when there are races going on that I'm not apart of (I like to be in on the hoopla, I guess). But sadly, one cannot afford to do ALL the RD events in a year ... (or can they ...? :) ) I had also registered my great nephew (just shy of 2 at the time) for the kid's races during the DLH weekend and I wanted to get an idea of what was going, so I could help direct my family. I was lucky enough to get the handing out medals job. Oh my goodness, talk about the cutest things! It was a great experience. Plus, for RD, I think if you do 2 shifts you get a free park ticket or something? I think that's why a lot of people do it.

ATTQOTD:

I've never volunteered for a race; mainly because most in my area are too small to need extensive volunteers beyond the organizers. I would love to volunteer at an rD race, but can't see building a trip around volunteering at a race (not to mention the difficulty in even signing up to volunteer at rD).

ATTQOTD:

I haven't volunteered for a race, per se. But I am very hands-on in various events leading up to our big Marathon Weekend here in my city. I'm hoping to become even more involved with race day, but from an organizer/race director standpoint. I'd love to one day be able to organize my own local races, even if they are small ones.

Mrs. BuckeyeBama is in for the 5k and 10k. So happy that she is going to try running again. She had a car accident a few year ago and has had to stop almost all exercise, but she is going to give it a whirl. We also registered on of her good friends for the same races.

Me and my husband are in for Goofy again this year. Woohoo!!!

Question for anyone here who has dealt with knee issues. I mentioned on the ATTQOTD about injuries that I'm fighting my knee right now. I think it is some tendonitis that I ignored until it turned into more of a tendon strain or something. So, it's steadily improving, but still not 100%. I've stayed off running for about 10 days so far. Planning to go at least 2 weeks and maybe more before I try running again. Once I do think it's ready for running again, I'm debating if I should wear some kind of knee compression sleeve or something to give myself some added support. I'm worried about reinjuring it, but I've also read that sometimes using those sleeves can stop the injury from fully recovering. Any input? Would you wear one? I suspect for me it might be more of a placebo effect making me feel "safer" once I start running again.
