The Real Housewives of WDW - 11/15: In Closing

OH NO:sad1:. I hope Leo ended up being OK throughout the rest of the day. That is terrifying. You just don't know how they will react. My DD4 hasn't been stung yet and am always very nervous.

I know I can google, but why don't you pull the stinger, but scrape it.

Hoping your adult night turned out.

Awww.... poor Leo! He was a really good sport about it though. He did mention how much it hurt, but never seemed to complain about it afterwards. :thumbsup2

Ok, this may be a total faux pas, but I did online check-in and just went up to whoever was available at check-in. Both times I checked in, no one was "manning" the Online Check-In counter, so if felt kinda silly to walk-up to an empty counter, KWIM? :confused3

AAAHHHHH!!!! My two favorite things...Walt Disney World and Real Housewives! So excited to ready your TR!

Poor little guy.
I had 4 kids with allergies, plus sometimes a virus or allergies would trigger an asthma attack.
The most important thing you can do, is just stay pro-active.
I remember crying many times, but crying helps, in some odd way.

I want to say, you went out for the evening,
but my gut is telling me you didn't and everyone
came over to your room.

Glad you like AKL. I actually made a ressie there and cancelled it.
I'm just not ready to stay there yet, when there are other resorts I want to stay at. Maybe someday when I have grandkids.

Awww man, that stinks about Leo! A positive (I like to see silver linings) is that you found out he's allergic and had a helpful CM instead of the same thing happening at school and no one noticeing.
EXACTLY how I saw it, too! :thumbsup2
I'm glad you mentioned the Bethenny DVD. I like to do yoga, when I actually do it. :rolleyes1 But I've been thinking of getting her DVD - do you like it?
I love it! I've been practicing yoga for around 15 years, but I'm easily bored and need things to move along. I'm more of a Power Yoga kind of gal. Body by Bethenny is totally that - it moves along well, and it's a thorough workout. I generally do one of three things: Body by Bethenny on its own, 20 minutes on the treadmill plus Rodney Yee's Power Yoga, or an hour of Inhale on the Oxygen channel. Of the 3, I enjoy Bethenny's the most. :thumbsup2

But, I can only image getting stung on the bottom of your foot is probably the worst place to get stung.
I know, right?! I really figured our trip was O V E R. :sad2:

Bees should be outlawed at Disney, along with all other stinging biting annoying creatures!
:rotfl: Funny you should say that - a pool person came over whil;e we were waiting it out and asked where Leo's beens tung, because they planned on "spraying" that night. I had no idea you even could spray for bees!
And for heavens sakes, washer hoses reversed? How long would THAT take to fix - 5 minutes? That is NOT disney-like.
I have a theory about WDW resort maintenance and it goes like this: they only respond to direct calls. Meaning, even though lots of other folks had called about the hose issue in other units, no one went to check the units that hadn't been called about. Which is why I feel really badly about not having called myself. :guilty:

Poor Leo - just read your update and, although I don't suffer from systemic allergies, I have a phobia about them because my mother is allergic to everything antibiotic known to man as well as bees.
Oh boy, how I understand this; the older I get, the fewer antibiotics there are to which I'm not allergic. :sad2:
I don't know if you have seen it, but there are now commercials on TV regarding allergic reactions in kids. I think its great because it increases awareness.
I haven't, but that's terrific! It's so hard for folks unfamiliar with it to understand.
I'm glad you liked Kidani. I absolutely loved it there and can't wait until I return one of these days!
We really, really did! I'd love to return there. You know, when I have points available again.

I'm so glad that lifeguard knew what to do and, as you said, that he happened to be there.
::yes:: I think I'm so jaded by our weird reactions to things that I wouldn't have realized it even was an allergic reaction, though my response is always to throw Benadryl at it, lol!
I'm really enjoying your report and can't wait to read more! Plus I gotta tell ya, I'm in love with that little guy's smile! What a cutie!
Aw, thank you! I'm glad you're here :)

I'm glad to read that you liked Kidani, even though you had a few specific areas of concern.
We so did! And that we still loved it despite all the negatives speaks volumes for us. :thumbsup2
I'm familiar with your Rafiki elevator, that's how we always go to the pool. Rather than going through the lobby, we'd walk to the Rafiki elevator and take it down to the parking area and walk to the back entrance of the pool.
It's a great location!
Oh, online check-in. I've never done it (because I suspected that it wasn't really that different from regular check-in)...
I have to say, when I've not had to wait long, online check-in has been perfect for me; no muss, no fuss, grab my keys and go. I've also consistently gotten my requests fulfilled doing online check-in, though I'm not necessarily convinced there's a connection.
After we returned from our trip, I was sent a link by Disney to complete a survey.
Yep, I got that, too! I voiced my concerns there and in email. :thumbsup2

I hope Leo ended up being OK throughout the rest of the day.
I won't leave you in suspense - he really handled it well! :thumbsup2
I know I can google, but why don't you pull the stinger, but scrape it.
As I recall, if you pull, there's a chance it'll break apart, leaving the venomous end stuck in the skin. Scraping apparently prevents that.

Awww.... poor Leo! He was a really good sport about it though. He did mention how much it hurt, but never seemed to complain about it afterwards. :thumbsup2
He really only complained about itching for about 3 weeks, but wasn't in much pain after that day!
Ok, this may be a total faux pas, but I did online check-in and just went up to whoever was available at check-in. Both times I checked in, no one was "manning" the Online Check-In counter, so if felt kinda silly to walk-up to an empty counter, KWIM? :confused3
Ooooo, this is interesting! I was tempted to go to an open non-online check-in window, but didn't want to get my hands slapped. I'll try it next time, though!

AAAHHHHH!!!! My two favorite things...Walt Disney World and Real Housewives! So excited to ready your TR!
LOL, excellent! Welcome aboard!

Poor little guy.
I had 4 kids with allergies, plus sometimes a virus or allergies would trigger an asthma attack.
The most important thing you can do, is just stay pro-active.
So true. Fortunately, Leo hasn't yet had a systemic reaction to anything. I'm hoping it stays that way!
I want to say, you went out for the evening,
but my gut is telling me you didn't and everyone
came over to your room.
:rolleyes1 ;)
Glad you like AKL. I actually made a ressie there and cancelled it.
I'm just not ready to stay there yet, when there are other resorts I want to stay at. Maybe someday when I have grandkids.
No, don't wait! It's such a relaxing place - I bet you'd love it!

Poor Leo, all his fun ruined by a bee. I am glad someone who knew how to handle the situation was there. My son and I have crazy reactions to bug bites too, so far only local reactions. I hope it stays that way.

You villa sounds very nice, but I don't know if I could deal with all that darkness. I need light. Did Disney respond to any of your problems?

Subbing to read the rest!:surfweb:
:goodvibes
Oh, it's seems soooo nice to have friends made among DiSers!
See you around!

Ah, Day Four. I’d been looking forward to Day Four of our trip for a long,First, we got evicted from the Yacht Club. Okay, maybe not evicted (NO OC Housewife Lynn) – but it was, indeed, moving day. Which meant the Envelope of Doom was tucked under our door, saying in no uncertain terms, “GET OUT!” Only, the Yacht Club is a Deluxe resort, so I’m pretty sure it said “GET OUT! Please. And have a magical day!”

Oh, so its not just us folks in the values they kick out;)

1. The Online Check-In-Window-hogging couple should have been asked to speak with a non-Online-Check-In CM the moment they required more assistance than key and map delivery.

OR…

2. A non-Online-Check-In CM should have beckoned the lady in front of me down to his empty window for assistance.

I totally agree!

So Kidani gets an F from me on lighting, though an A+ for ambiance.

Yeah, but ambiance is pointless if you can't see it:lmao:

Kidani also gets an F of epic proportions for this stupid move: the hoses on the washing machine were switched. So when you set the washer on Cold, you actually got Hot. No problem, right? Just select Hot if what you really want is a Cold wash. Only… the washer is set to rinse all cycles on Cold. Which is actually Hot. So you can’t win. Whatever selection you make, your clothes will at some point be bathed in hot water.

That's sounds like a brilliant plan:confused3 Have heard back about it? Are they going to reimburse you for the shunken clothes?

I wrote in about that, too. In terms that may or may note have referred to their HVAC people as “idiots.”

Nicer words than I woul dhave used I am sure:rotfl2:

and then get into a car that wasn’t 200 degrees was absolutely wonderful. :cool1:

:cool1:

“My next mental sense of alert was this: “I’m allergic to bee stings. I’m also allergic to mosquito and fire ant bites. Leo’s allergic to mosquito and fire ant bites. Could he also be allergic to bee stings? I need to get a lifeguard.”

Poor Kiddo:hug: WTG keeping calm. Much better than me, I would have been freaking!

Kevin rocked my world.

WTG Kevin!:woohoo:

So I got out my laptop, popped in my Body by Bethenny DVD and yoga’d it out. At the end, laying in relaxation pose, the tears started. Then the sobs. Like I said, I’m good in an emergency, but I freak out later. It was time to release, apparently. The bee sting scared the crap out of me. Because, as a person with major allergies, I know how it goes; what triggers a localized reaction the first time can easily result in a systemic reaction the next. You just never know. And that’s just plain scary.

:hug::hug::hug:

Sounds like a rough day V. Hope everything is okay:hug:

At least the "get out" sign was just to change resorts & not go home yet! :)

Glad to hear you like Kidani! I'll be there during the last week of October for the first time!! :cool1:

Poor Leo!! He has certainly been having a memorable vacation....lost cellphone & now the bee!!! Thank goodness for Kevin! Sounds like he was really the right person to be there! :thumbsup2

Leo likes to thoroughly inspect a pool area before diving in, so to speak. He wants to be aware of all options and potential pitfalls. And so he’d walked around the pool deck, dipped into water in several spots, inspected the slide. He then wanted to take a look at the splash zone, where a maze of interesting things squirt water. He liked it in there. He was having a good time, running between a couple spraying thingies, when all of a sudden he went down. Looked at me horrified, but silent, for a moment. And then screamed bloody murder.

“BEE! BEE!! BEEEEEEE!!!!!”

“Where?! Where is it?!” asked I.

And he showed me the bottom of his foot. To which was attached, yes, a bee. Know what? They really do die when they sting. I know now, because I grabbed a leaf off the ground to shoo the bee away, and it just fell off. Leaving behind its stinger. In my baby’s foot.

FYI, I’m good to have around in an emergency. Because I go into instant paramedic mode and freak out later. Somewhere in the recesses of my mind I remembered “never pull the stinger out, scrape with a credit card.” No credit card, but I did have our room keys with me and I quickly scraped the stinger up and out.

That made Leo scream louder.

My next mental sense of alert was this: “I’m allergic to bee stings. I’m also allergic to mosquito and fire ant bites. Leo’s allergic to mosquito and fire ant bites. Could he also be allergic to bee stings? I need to get a lifeguard.”

There are no lifeguards on that side of the pool complex, so I helped Leo hobble over to the other side and grabbed the attention of the wonderful Kevin. I explained quickly and concisely what happened and Kevin asked “Is he allergic?” I told him that I didn’t know.

Kevin rocked my world. First, he started talking to Leo. I mean really talking to him. I later found out that he was trying to keep Leo from going into shock, in case he was allergic. Shock just makes things even worse. While talking, Kevin alerted another lifeguard that he was handling an emergency, cracked open an ice pack, and readied anti-sting swabs and a cell phone, just in case.

~sigh~ Kevin took one look at the bottom of Leo’s foot, which was now five times its normal size, purple-red and hot to the touch, and said “Yep, he’s allergic.” Kevin knows what he’s talking about. See, Kevin just found out that he’s allergic to bee stings. The same way. He stepped on a bee at work a month before our trip, and experienced the same type of reaction. His manager sent him to the Dr., who confirmed that Kevin was having an allergic reaction.

I’m so grateful that Kevin happened to be on duty, in that particular lifeguard chair, that day. He asked if I had antihistamine – I did, but up in the room. Kevin didn’t want Leo going that far yet because Kevin could have an ambulance there in seconds, whereas it would take longer if I called from my room. And we just didn’t know at that time if Leo’s reaction would be localized or systemic. Kevin had an antihistamine in his first aid kit, and the dose would be fine for Leo, but he’d have to swallow the pill, not chew it.

Between Kevin and I, we encouraged and cajoled until Leo somehow managed to get it down. We waited another 5-10 minutes and nothing more seemed to be happening. Kevin went back to his post, asking that we stay put another 15 minutes, right there behind his chair. We did, and nothing more happened, so we got the go ahead from Kevin and headed back to the room.

At that point, we’d still not gone grocery shopping and it was lunch time. Leo was in no condition to go in search of food; all he wanted was to lie down in the room and he couldn’t really walk well. We wound up in Kidani’s gift shop, where I grabbed some kind of Oscar Meyer lunch pack and a Mickey ice cream bar for Leo, and we went back to the villa to eat.

By the time we were done, Leo was nodding off. The antihistamine was hitting him hard. So I tucked him under his three blankets and wondered what to do with myself.

Know what I hadn’t done at all yet on the trip? Work out. And I was feeling it. Yes, we’d had plenty of walking, but my back and shoulders were tight. Made tighter by the whole bee sting situation, too, I’m sure. Some yoga was just what I needed while Leo slept.

Still, Leo was okay. And now we know. So I finally pulled myself back up, grabbed a shower and got back in gear. Though I still wasn’t sure what the rest of the day might hold. We had plans for the night, big plans. Plans that involved leaving my allergy-ridden baby in the care of strangers while I lived it up with my grown-up friends.

Would I be able to leave Leo? Would he even want to go? Was my favorite dress destined to stay in the closet until our return home?

Stay tuned.

OMG! This read like a whodunit novel. I actually leaned closer to my computer as I read it because I was so anxious to find out what happened. Poor little Leo. I know what you mean about reacting at the moment and then letting go emotionally some time later. That happens to me sometimes too.

I'm sorry I missed the first several posts, but I'm here now. I love your "family" and love reading about your son.

And The Look segment...I laughed so hard! and I'm at work! :rotfl:

Poor Leo, all his fun ruined by a bee.
I knwo - I felt awful for him! :guilty:
You villa sounds very nice, but I don't know if I could deal with all that darkness. I need light. Did Disney respond to any of your problems?
Y'know, I'm normally the same way with needing a lot of light, but it was okay, other than not being able to find things. Maybe because it was so hot, the darkness felt good? :confused3 I got the usual canned response from Disney, "Thank you for your correspondence, blah, blah, blah..."

Oh, it's seems soooo nice to have friends made among DiSers!
See you around!
Excellent, welcome aboard! It's been very, very cool having such wonderful friends with whom to vacation. :goodvibes

Oh, so its not just us folks in the values they kick out;)
Nope! :rotfl:
Have heard back about it? Are they going to reimburse you for the shunken clothes?
Just the canned response. No, I didn't ask for reimbursement since it mostly turned out okay. I sent the one top that shrank too much to a friend's daughter. ;)

At least the "get out" sign was just to change resorts & not go home yet!
So true! :thumbsup2
Glad to hear you like Kidani! I'll be there during the last week of October for the first time!!
It really is a fabulous place!

I'm sorry I missed the first several posts, but I'm here now. I love your "family" and love reading about your son.
Aw, thanks Wendy! I'm glad you're here!
And The Look segment...I laughed so hard! and I'm at work! :rotfl:
Oops, sorry 'bout that! :ssst:

Also... is that PATRICK in your signature?!?! When did he get so big?! What a handsome little man. Now, when are we gonna get him to The Mouse? popcorn:: :)

:sad2: Do we need to send you off with Jo to Fake Heritage Reform School? :rotfl:
Hey, what are you saying? :rotfl2:

I've finally caught up, I'm so sorry about all the Kidani problems and poor poor Leo, I stood on a bee when I was about his age and it's nasty. I'm allergic too but mine is progressive so wasn't too bad then, I hope he stays well away from them in the future!

is that PATRICK in your signature?!?! When did he get so big?! What a handsome little man. Now, when are we gonna get him to The Mouse? popcorn:: :)

Yep, that's my little guy. :lovestruc

Mouse is out for a few years because next year we're going on a Hawaiian cruise (celebrating Mama's 40th birthday). Hey! I have an idea! You got some extra cash lying around? Take Leo and we'll all cruise to Hawaii together.

Well, I thought I had responded to this chapter, but I evidently didn't. Thanks for the 411 on Kidani, V. I had heard all wonderful things, and though I don't love hearing about some disappointments, it's always good to be prepared! That washing machine glitch is bizarre! And I can't believe they haven't repaired them all yet! When and if we stay at Kidani, that will be the first thing I check! (And I'll be sure to bring a flashlight or two, as well ;))

Poor Leo!! And YAY for Kevin! I am glad it all worked out as well as could be expected, but I can only imagine how stressful it all was for you. I hope your evening plans didn't get too messed up.....

Hucifer, m'dear, I have been speed-reading your TR, but got in much too late, so I'm still trying to catch up before posting. First rate stuff as always!:thumbsup2 And yes, Patrick looks so grown up in that photo! What a handsome boy!!

I'm here! A little late to the party, but here nonetheless! I'm thinking we are pretty close neighbors of yours, we live in Bradenton. I have to say, Leo is just so stinking cute!!!! I love your avatar!!! I saw the Gator and figured it had to be a great TR, the author is a Gator fan!! :rotfl: Can't wait to read more!

Hey, what are you saying? :rotfl2:
Don't worry - you're still my favorite fake-Brit! :teeth:
I stood on a bee when I was about his age and it's nasty. I'm allergic too but mine is progressive so wasn't too bad then, I hope he stays well away from them in the future!
Exactly my fear - my allergies have all been progressive, so we're concerned about that for Leo, too. :worried:

Mouse is out for a few years because next year we're going on a Hawaiian cruise (celebrating Mama's 40th birthday). Hey! I have an idea! You got some extra cash lying around? Take Leo and we'll all cruise to Hawaii together.
Oh, how I wish! That sounds positively dreamy :cloud9:

And a plumber's wrench, lol! Honest - Kidani was fabulous, even with some negatives. The light situation only really irritated me when doing make-up, and that's more often the case for me in hotels than not.

Hey there neighbor! Yep, I'm just a bit north and west of you. Thanks for joining in, and... GO GATORS!!! :cheer2:

It speaks volumes that with your list of not so great things that you still loved Kidani. It's on my list of resorts to try soon.

Poor Leo! Glad you had such a great lifeguard to help you out. Hope you got an epi pen for Leo & hope you don't have to use it anytime soon.

Good for you for holding it together in the middle of the crisis & falling apart later. I am a nurse & did pediatric nursing for 10 years & you are the kind of Mom I loved because I could take care of the child & then comfort the Mom later.:thumbsup2

Leo's a lucky guy to have a mom like you! :thumbsup2 I hope the pain from the sting and the swelling went away for him quickly! Is your yoga DVD Bethenny from Housewives?

Hope you got an epi pen for Leo & hope you don't have to use it anytime soon.
Not yet. Since it wasn't a systemic reaction, they won't prescribe one.
Good for you for holding it together in the middle of the crisis & falling apart later. I am a nurse & did pediatric nursing for 10 years & you are the kind of Mom I loved because I could take care of the child & then comfort the Mom later.:thumbsup2
Thank you! I can't even imagine trying to do your job with a parent freaking out, too!

Is your yoga DVD Bethenny from Housewives?
It is! It's very good; I definitely recommend it! :thumbsup2

Leo slept. And slept. And slept. When he finally awoke, he was pretty groggy, but not in much pain and was determined not to let that mean ol’ bee get the better of him. Which is to say, the boy wanted his night out as much as his momma wanted hers. :woohoo:

And the swelling in his foot had come down quite a bit. He took a shower and dressed, and we iced his foot once more. While he iced and watched a movie, I got all prettied up and we soon headed out for a lovely evening.

I hadn’t previously commented on our room view, and this is a good time to do so. I booked Standard View to save on DVC points. Remember I’d also requested a room in the Rafiki section of Kidani. What we wound up with was a ground floor unit on the side of the main entrance’s traffic loop. It was surprisingly quiet – I never really heard the noise of Magical Express buses passing by. And there was a tall screen of shrubbery between our railings and the road, so the view wasn’t bad at all.

And we got a good dose of animals with each walk to and from our room. Each time, we’d pass a large window in the hallway and we often saw a few Anclote cattle, a couple zebras, or the occasional ostrich through it. It was more than adequate and I didn’t feel like we missed out by not having a savanna view at all. :thumbsup2

So Leo and I waved to our cattle friends as we passed by on our way to the car. We drove over to the Jambo building, valeted the car, and went in search of the kids’ club, Simba’s Clubhouse.

We’d never been to that one before, and I just expected it to be near the lobby and restaurants. FYI, it’s not. It’s actually on the far side of the pool, all tucked away and not at all obvious. Which made it sort of secret-like. Like a secret clubhouse. Just for kids. According to Leo. ;)

Maddie and Evan were there, getting checked in, and Michael was already in and waiting. Those kids could not ditch us parents quickly enough. They all LOVE them some kids’ club time and look forward to it every year now!

As for the grown-ups? We were bound for a lovely evening of food and wine at Jiko. Minus the sounds of children. :cloud9:

Listen, we adore our kids. Clearly, we love spending time with them and probably spoil the heck out of them. But with 10 days in Disney, they needed a break from us and vice-versa.

Lauralee (LL) and Tony, Tracy (T) and Andy, our DIS friend and Orlando-ite Angela, and I settled into a C-shaped booth. We ordered wine and cocktails, started talking and laughing and, well… never stopped. Talking and laughing. Which is why I don’t have a whole lot to report about the night! I don’t remember everything we said, and I wouldn’t rehash it all here, anyway. But trust me when I say that we had a remarkable time and I’m so glad I was able to make it! :grouphug:

4789501687_b3b2f5a8d2.jpg

Andy, T, Angela, V, LL, Tony

As for the food, first up for me was a seasonal salad, with Florida peaches and blue cheese. Yum! For my entrée, I had the maize-crusted halibut and it was fabulous. Not quite as fabulous as two other meals that come later in the trip, but still fabulous. It was light, which felt right in the heat of summer, and went beautifully with the South African white wine recommended by both Angela and our server. The artisan cheese plate that I ordered for dessert didn’t fare as well. It was good, but didn’t quite wow me. I was also pretty full.

After dinner, T and Andy sprang Maddie and Evan from Simba’s Clubhouse, while the rest of us detoured to Victoria Falls for an after-dinner drink. And there, I discovered my first new, exciting and delicious drink of the trip: an “Eco-tini.”

I have no idea what’s so “eco” about it, but the ingredient list is what caught my eye: it includes agave nectar and a liqueur derived from the acai berry. Why is that so exciting? Because acai is a major component in the best thing I did to prepare for this trip – the Brazilian Blowout. The Brazilian Blowout is a keratin smoothing treatment for hair that turned my fuzzy mess into a frizz-free work of art… even in the humidity of a Florida summer! What a difference it made during my Disney trip. Never before have I been able to wear my hair down outdoors in Flroida, in summer, but I did multiple times during the trip. It was wonderful!

So I thought it fitting to order an Eco-tini in honor of the majestic acai. That it was wonderfully tasty was icing on the cake! Not too sweet, a little sour, crisp and refreshing. Yes, it was a grand choice.

It had been such a nice evening in the company of friends, I was loathe to let it end. But Leo needed to be picked up and I was getting sleepy. We said goodnight to Angela, with promises to get together again next time I’m that way, and Leo and I headed back to Kidani. He said he’d had a fun night with his friends, too.

I noticed that he was limping again and his poor foot had swelled up quite a bit. I had him ice it again while I changed into pajamas, gave him a Benadryl and tucked him into his three blankets for the night.

The next day was July 4th. Our plan was to park it at the pool all day with our friends. But the forecast I saw before falling asleep didn’t look good; rain, rain and more rain. Would we decide to tackle a park on the most crowded day of the year? Would the fireworks be rained out? Would Leo awake to a foot as big as his head?

More to come.
