The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

Will Smith defended his wife, as he should have, and didn't really hurt Chris Rock, who probably didn't think his words would be as hurtful as they were. Divertive event but not a big deal.

”Rock declined to file charges with the LAPD in the wake of the blow, but a legal expert told The Sun the strip could still appear in civil court.

Beverley Hills attorney Adam Michael Sacks said both Smith and the awards ceremony were at risk of being embroiled in legal action.

Rock can sue for public humiliation and shame. He could say the attack damaged his confidence and career.

“Chris could even sue the academy… As a performer on stage, he could argue that he should have been protected.”

Sacks went on to suggest that Rock and Smith would likely settle out of court should the comedian decide to file a civil suit, but added that Rock can still change his mind and go ahead with a criminal case.

Chris Rock, who has not been seen since the attack, has been given a “aftercare package,” including a rescuer if he needs one, the insider said.

Meanwhile, LA’s rich and famous still welcomed Smith like a hero as they partied with him Sunday night.”

Maybe it’s just that we haven’t heard much about it, but I wonder how it felt to be Chris Rock after the show last night.

He is going to be in Boston for the next week or so performing in several sold out shows. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say about it.

I pretty sure Chris Rock doesn't write all of his own material. And as PP said...it was rehearsed with no pushback (or slap). I am still shocked Will Smith behaved in that manner. My first thought was he was drunk or high on something.

I read an article that interviewed one of the show runners and apparently that joke was added in by Rock. It was not in the script according to this guy. Also, he said there was no wardrobe malfunction that he could see during Smith's acceptance speech. I read this earlier today - will try to find it again and post it.

Ms. Jada claims to be a tough, strong woman. Why didn't she say anything to defend herself? For quite awhile she's been rockin' the close, cropped hair thing. Maybe Rock didn't see any difference from her usual style. But I really think Smith was wrong on so many levels, and so was the entire crowd when they gave him a standing ovation! I would've boo'd him off the stage! And then for the Smith entourage to party the night away and everyone around them thought that was ok? What a weird society and warped values the rich and famous have....

I don't think Jada should have had to sit there undefended as Chris Rock made fun of her medical condition. Maybe in the future Chris Rock will be more careful about pointedly insulting a specific member of the audience. That isn't appropriate.
Now Chris didn’t know about the alopecia, but why did either Jada or Will got offended, when just days before she was on TikTok saying she didn’t care what people thought of her hair? Will’s reaction & subsequent “explanation” just doesn’t add up. I stand by it being trying to save his own butt because he laughed at the joke.

I think Will Smith just gave Chris Rock a whole lot of material.

Actually, you can see Venus having a bit showing at the 3:41 mark in this video of the acceptance speech. I don't know if she moved, so they decided to show the Williams family after all. But, part of her is still peeking out.

Honestly, I thought she was showing a little more than intended on the red carpet also. The ABC exec interviewed in the link I posted doesn't know what happened during the acceptance speech, but didn't think it was because of a wardrobe malfunction. But maybe the guys with their fingers on the button as he put it saw more than he did.

I thought this was so strange. You would think they would have gone home and stayed out of the spotlight. There were reports of Will partying and dancing the night away, singing and waving his Oscar around and posing for pictures while singing his past hits like Getting jiggy with it and Miami. So weird. Hit someone. Get award. get standing ovation. go party it up like nothing happened. What a world we live in.

I think if he hadn’t of won the Oscar, he may have played it more low key, and not attended an after party. But he had his ego stroked with the win. Plus it looked like 100% support and admiration from his peers.

Unfortunately, he was on top of the world after the win with the audience reaction, and ready to party. So full of himself.

It's the message it sends. Your scenario is VERY different than what happened. Again, we keep pushing the pendulum towards a pretty classless and more violent direction and it's showing.

I agree! Just a few years ago it was shocking enough when Kanye West stormed up on stage to take the microphone from Taylor Swift (because I guess he was personally offended that she won and Beyonce didn't?) - and now we have devolved into someone thinking its acceptable to walk up on stage at the Oscars and smack someone else in the face. That's some crazy happening right there.

I am half and half. He won that Oscar before his disgusting actions. There was a lot of hard work put into that movie and it should have been celebrated.

I do however believe that he should be done now. Future projects should automatically be taken out of consideration for ANY award if Will Smith is involved IMO.

I don't even see what was so offensive. How is it insulting to be compared to GI Jane when Demi Moore looked great and was a strong and admirable character?

Watching GMA this am and they had a guy on (didn't get his name) discussing the fact that if this had been a comedy show, and someone got up from the audience and smacked the comedian, they would've been hauled away. He didn't understand why Smith wasn't escorted off and not allowed back. He also said that the academy may indeed punish Smith by not allowing him back next year to present the award for best actress. Time will tell. But I do agree that had this been an average joe bum-rushing the stage he would've been in jail. The rich get away with everything!

Yes, Will said Denzel Washington said to him after the slap, "At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you." Will was trying to insinuate that Chris was a devil or hater coming after him. But, there's another way to interpret that sentence. Denzel could have meant one's own ego, thinking one is above it all, has become entitled, privileged, so much so, that one can decide to just walk across a stage and smack someone else if they want to. :sad2:

ABC said their sources saw Will and Denzel at the Governor's Ball afterward, when there were finally no cameras, the two men were, according to the description, having a long "spirited conversation." Maybe it was then that Denzel was trying to set Will straight on his meaning of that sentence, as in "What the heck were you thinking???"

Meanwhile, TMZ, ABC and Extra have said their sources saw Chris Rock at a different afterparty, and he was still bewildered about the whole incident.

Harvey Levin at TMZ, also reported he personally talked to an extremely, extremely successful and powerful black entertainer who was at the awards, on the phone the next morning. He said that man said, "Every black person in the audience felt broken after that slap." There are three extremely, extremely successful and powerful black entertainers I can think of off-hand, who Harvey would have their private phone numbers and would take his call: Denzel, Tyler Perry, and Samuel L. Jackson. Three men who worked so hard to get their achievements, yet still understand how easily, due to social perceptions or a social injustice, it could all be taken away.

How sad for Will that has has to put out such a formal statement online. If only he had been given an opportunity to speak about this and apologize in person.... :rotfl2:
What surprised me the most is that Chris Rock barely flinched after taking Will Smith's best shot, a guy almost twice his size.
Will Smith just proved he's no action hero...

The GMA guy was their legal expert. I forget his name too. Yet, he's always good at breaking stuff down and explaining things. I love how George Stephanopoulos kept saying something like, "Why wasn't Will hauled away?" :lmao:
