The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

What surprised me the most is that Chris Rock barely flinched after taking Will Smith's best shot, a guy almost twice his size.
Will Smith just proved he's no action hero...

That was one of Chris Rock's jokes at the afterparty he attended, that he had been hit by the guy who played Muhammad Ali and he's still standing. :lmao:

Have you watched Stephen Colbert?

In the end, the main issue, before we can judge Will's actions: Did Chris know about the alopecia, or was it just a GI Jane joke?
And does Will know if Chris knows? Or does Will just assume that everyone knows about his wife's condition?

TMZ sources who were at the awards say Chris didn't know about the alopecia. Looking at the photos I posted yesterday, during the commercial break right afterward, it looks like Chris did try to apologize afterward. (This was before Will won and apologized to everyone and the presenters, but not Chris. )

There has to be some form of penalty. Otherwise, this will happen again.

People have lost their minds since lockdown.

If Will Smith and Chris Rock show up on Wrestlemania, I will feel thoroughly PUNKED...

I don't think Jada should have had to sit there undefended as Chris Rock made fun of her medical condition. Maybe in the future Chris Rock will be more careful about pointedly insulting a specific member of the audience. That isn't appropriate.
I think a better response would have been him just slapping Rock, then staying silent instead of yelling and cursing, but no one's perfect.

Full disclosure, I've suffered for years from what Jada has, so I have zero tolerance for seeing a woman being singled out and made fun of for that painful condition. Jada didn't deserve that and was obviously hurt. I'm glad that Smith defended her.

There is and has been way too much criticism of women's looks, as if they're objects to be evaluated and judged. Don't feel at all bad about one of those casual, public criticizers taking a pop to the mouth. Sorry not sorry.

First, I am sorry you have had to suffer with alopecia. I can tell just by reading your responses it hits home and you have been deeply affected by it. I understand and for that I am sorry.

However ...

I don't think that Chris Rock knew that Jada suffered from alopecia. You can clearly see by the photos afterwards he is trying to talk to both of them in what looks like an apologetic stance. Jada has worn her hair short and long, and I as well as many others never thought twice about her haircut. I thought she was rocking a new look (which she can pull off beautifully), not because she had a medical condition.

Next, I don't know if she was hurt, does anybody truly know? The only reaction we saw was that she rolled her eyes. That could've been a "whatever" reaction because she is still miffed at CR from 2016 -- and possibly that reaction was not one of hurt and vulnerability. I honestly don't know!! And if she was hurt (which is understandable), do you really think CR was out to cruelly hurt her in that way? Intentionally mocking a medical condition? I really don't think he was. I think he had no clue she had alopecia. YMMV.

The hardest part I am having is understanding your stance, that you are condoning WS slapping CR? Why is violence necessary and/or justified? It absolutely isn't. No, nobody needed to stop the show and give a speech on alopecia. But Will could have conveyed his displeasure with saying, "Not cool, man. It's not by choice," or leaving it until a commercial break to deal with it one-on-one. There is no way going up on stage and assaulting him should be acceptable. Period.

And alluding to presenters not singling people out in the audience ... I just don't see that happening. They talk to individuals all the time on these shows. It is part of the banter, that is what keeps people watching. Audiences aren't tuning in to watch someone we don't know make a speech after winning The Best Editing of a Motion Picture award. They are watching it to see the side clips and interactions. And yes, traditionally that has always included singling the famous out. Jokes at their expense has always been prevalent.

It's nice to see how his PR team feels.

I hope they got hazard and OT pay because I doubt they've slept since Saturday night!

The plot thickens. Richard Williams came forward to condemn Will Smith's behavior before Smith issued his apology. I'm sure this was a factor in his choice to apologize. I saw King Richard and it seems to me that he raised his daughters to be respectful and above the nonsense.

I'll be honest, I didn't realize he was still alive. Shows you that even someone who likes and watches sports (including women's tennis) and likes and watches TV/Movies can not know that Jada had alopecia and that Richard Williams was still alive. But good for him to comment, since he was used a prop in Will's speech justifying his actions.

He used Richard’s name as a way to condone what he did. At least that’s the way I took it.

I haven’t seen the movie, but when WS said “life imitates art” and “love makes you do crazy things,” it made me think Richard Williams might be violent/crazy?

Same. And let's be honest. Whatever Venus and Serena had to put up with as young girls was worse by a magnitude of millions compared to the joke. They also had to deal with it when they had literally NO power as compared to the power and platform Will and Jada have.

Do you think the Gyllenhalls should be insulted that he joked about them being married? Or maybe that there's incest afoot? C'mon -- it's a joke. Have you never seen Rickles or Gervais or Rivers do this?

But honestly, I get people may think it was a bad joke, but where was the insult? That he acknowledged she is currently bald? He didn't make a joke that she looks like a man or that she's somehow less beautiful. I GET that she may not have liked the joke. But she rolled her eyes, she didn't start crying or even look angry. Bad joke, then spend an hour at the red table discussing (even invite him for an honest dialog).

Men have protected women for millenia. There's nothing wrong with it.

This removes agency from women. Women have the right to decide what happens next when something happens to them. Unless Jada said "please go slap him in the face right now", then Will took her agency from her. That's messed up, even if it's the "thought that counts" or whatever.

While I am glad Chris was not punched, I am a little shocked that a grown man went for a slap to the face :rotfl2:

Maybe because Jada orchestrated this whole thing for publicity. They already knew the jokes would be told, maybe him going up there wasn’t a spur of the moment thing.
Had he punch CR he could have really hurt him, but a slap, wouldn’t do as much damage. We see how people actually defend WS, maybe the couple thought they’d get more support than backlash.
Either way though, that’s who people are talking about still. I wouldn’t put it past attention craving celebrities to do that.

They are one of the most famous couples on the planet. He has 62 million followers on instagram. He was about to win an Oscar from the front row of the auditorium. They have never LEFT the public eye. Their kids are famous. I simply can't imagine that the amount of attention they already have was put at risk to get THIS kind of attention...on purpose? This isn't a "any publicity is good publicity" situation. Leave that to people are D list celebs or influencers.

Nope...the main issue is someone assaulted someone else. Just like we teach our kids no one can make you do anything. You're the only person that can control how you deal with situations in life. Only Will had the power to decide he was going to go assault a man on national tv in the middle of an award show.

Thank goodness for CR taking the high road and deescalating the situation unlike the moron who took the situation to an entirely different negatively escalated place.
