The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

I would guess that security never imagined they would have to stop someone from the audience from hitting a presenter. They probably worry about non-invited people trying to crash.

Well, they definitely should have been prepared for a stage storming incident of some type -- activists (and unstable people) do it from time to time in sports, it's happened at political rallies, and it's happened at the Oscars before when I streaker got on stage. HOWEVER, I'm pretty certain they don't expect it to be from the "VIP section". Although I guess now they will.

Hollywood is weird. Can you imagine if Amy Schumer would have said that joke and was slapped? Are men only allowed to hit men? What are the rules when it comes to assault?

They cheered for him. So disgusting.

There are so many permutations of "what ifs". It's a pretty fascinating social exercise for sure. What if the "slapper" was a white man (or woman). What if the comic was white and the slapper was black. Would Smith have physically confronted a woman? I even read "takes" last night that white people should refrain from commentary. In so many cases it would be this scenario (already discussed from every angle) with additional societal concerns on top. Would any scenario result in removal/arrest. Does Jada (or any woman in her place) actually want a man to "defend" her in this way? Does a grown woman with a platform and fame like hers actually need to be defended?

His acceptance speech was a mess and the standing O was shocking imo.

This photo certainly depicts Rock and trying to de-escalate (hand extended) even after he was slapped. Such a shame that they weren't as gracious.

So is it open season on physically attacking comedians who offend us? Because Will Smith and the Academy just green-lighted that last night.
I saw a tweet from Kathy Griffin essentially saying the same thing.

Joy Behar, on The View said pretty much the same thing this morning. As a comedienne herself, she said she's afraid for all comedians now. :(

But, see, there's a flaw with that line of thinking. It's not open season on commedians. This incident will not lead to more. Most people don't do somehting wrong not because of the fear of consequences, but rather because they know it's wrong. The slope just ain't that slippery.

Supposedly the Academy is investigating the slap heard round the world. What will they do, pull Will's membership card? He already has his Oscar and likely won't be the favorite for another award any time soon.

Interesting that Will apologized to the academy but didn't mention Chris Rock. I think Chris is a sleaze but that doesn't give anyone the right to slap him for a stupid joke, probably a joke someone else wrote.

I think she also talked about how comedians are very much under the microscope now and this just makes it worse for them. The joke could have been about their marriage or her sex partners or whatever but it was a joke comparing her (a gorgeous bald actress) to another actress (a gorgeous bald actress). Perhaps he didn't know of her condition, but even if he did it's kind of a "meh" joke I guess? Like now a joke like that is considered off limits? Well, let's just end stand up I guess.

I'd like to know 2 things, 1-where is the footage of Smith as he went from laughing to hulk-mode? and 2-was Jada really wounded by his joke because what they showed looked like she rolled her eyes. I certainly think we'll never know #2 because if she was not pissed off, it would make Will look like a bigger jerk than he already does.

Well, certianly comedians have become targets on social media, but it's not really the same thing. The sentiment though that if Will Smith isn't punished it will encourage more of this, I really don't think that's true. If it happens at the next awards show, I'll rethink my stance.

The repercussions will be more about the Academy trying to hang onto whatever respect they have left at this point. If they do nothing, and let him get away with this, they might as well just close up shop because their reputation will be in the toilet.

At this point, I'd hazard a guess that the split among academy members is 90% condemnation/10% support for Will Smith, at BEST. The majority will rule. They will issue a slap on the wrist, likely expel him from the Academy (if he is even a member), and bar him from future awards shows. He will get to keep his Oscar. He won't face any legal consequences unless Chris Rock files a civil suit, which he very well might, given the circumstances.

This 2nd paragraph is my question as well. I want to how he went from smiling to storming the stage. And yes. She totally rolled her eyes.

I think we live in different worlds. I can tell you just today at our school we had more than one incident of a kid...a KID, who made a comment about how justified Will Smith was and one who told another he looked like Chris Rock getting ready to be smacked. In what I would say is the real world we keep moving the pendulum as to what's acceptable or justifiable and ppl. lose perspective and ethical values pretty quickly.

I did start my sentence with "also". But I think she may have meant the average Joe/Jane comedian in a club. Like people are so judgmental/unhinged/seeking conflict , would they approach a comedian in a basement club over a joke?

Yes, this exactly.

It looks like the academy is launching a formal review. They said there was a meeting today and there was fierce debate and no resolution. They considered removing Smith last night but obviously did not.

It's too late, whatever they do now is just because of backlash, it isn't because they are doing the right thing. If they were concerned about the right thing they would have had security escort WS out after he hit CR.
If one of us plebs went up there and slapped Chris Rock during the broadcast I'm sure there would have been no time wasted getting us out of there right then and there.

Wow. So, maybe both Chris Rock and Will Smith - but especially Smith - should be making some kinds of public statements. Both of them have role model status and what you say about your school shows the kids (some of them anyway) need these celebrities to share a different kind of influence. I'd include Jaden Smith in this, too. I'm guessing he's exerts an influence, and he's 23 not 13. (I just looked and he has over 18 million followers online.)
