The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

Absolutely agree - it was highly inapporporate to do it right there on stage. If the academy, or theater wants to take further action, then by all means.
Agree. I cannot personally speak on domestic violence, but it sounded like a "Yeah, I know, I shouldn't have slapped you, but you had it coming with being disrespectful." No apology to Chris, which should have been his first apology. It was almost as if the speech made him out to be the victim. It is so bizarre and disappointing.

According to the NY Post, the Academy Awards membership by-laws or membership rules, state something like no violence. They even weakly, publicly stated after the fact they don't condone violence.

I think, at the time Will was crying and Denzel and Tyler Perry went to talk to him, and later Will also crying onstage during his speech, was more because he was worried that the Academy would take away his oscar after he won, than what he did to Chris. He didn't apologize to Chris. Yet he did say something like, "I hope the Academy invites me back."

So, as far as HE was concerned, he was the victim, and his wife was the victim. Not Chris Rock. :sad2:

I think the Academy will do something weak, like suspend Will Smith from voting next year as punishment. That's it. Maybe they will even have someone else present the Best Actress award. Unfortunately, I can also see they let Will hand out the award, and he makes some stupid joke again about protecting his wife's honor, and that he did the right thing. :sad2:

Whoopi Goldberg, (a previous, multiple time Oscars host,) said on The View today, she doesn't think they will take his award away from him.

I do believe he should be penalized in some way by the Academy for slapping Chris there. Otherwise, they are basically condoning violence to other Academy members, and on their show.

If the men had taken it outside after the show, even if it was all over social media in the same way, it would have been different. That would have been a private fight.

According to the CNN article I read it is the autoimmune one (areata).

The CNN article is just regurgitating what Jada has been telling people. It's not necessarily accurate. She likely does not have the autoimmune version of alopecia. She still has plenty of hair follicles in a normal hair pattern. All her hair loss is along the forehead and she does not have the characteristic round bald patches associated with alopecia areata. There is a YouTube video by a hair loss surgeon who himself has alopecia totalis, and who had a lot to say about Jada's claim of having autoimmune alopecia (this was posted 2 months ago when she went public about her hair loss).

Alopecia simply means "hair loss." There are plenty of types of alopecia that have nothing to do with having an actual illness. This surgeon believes her linear "bald spot" is an old scar from a brow lift, because alopecia never causes a linear bald spot like the one she has.

She is a woman in her 50s with a history of tightly pulled hairstyles. Hair loss is common for men AND women as you age. It's a normal part of life.

Regardless, she is not someone "suffering" from a disabling medical condition. She isn't bald due to chemo or something. If that had been the case, the joke would have likely never been approved in the first place, and Chris Rock is not a comedian known for punching down. He is an observational comedian who likely was just riffing on Jada's current hair style in a harmless way.

Would someone with an autoimmune condition go to an indoor large event without a mask on at this point in time? I mean, come on. She isn't sick. The defense of Will's behavior based on this premise is a misdirection, at best. (Not saying you are doing this at all, Jennasis)

It does not look like Chris Rock has said anything publicly, but P Diddy said they made up. There were also reports of Will at an after party singing and dancing the night away so I guess it's all good?

I was thinking afterwards why nobody stopped Will while he was stalking up to the stage. Where was security? Maybe it was all planned, but I just can't wrap my head around that. Why would Will embarrass himself like that willingly? If it was part of a bit, they would have hugged and laughed after. At least I think they would.
He's trying to reestablish his manhood after all the jokes about him over the last year. He's become a laughing stock because of his wife's confessions for the world to hear.

I don't think it was planned. Or they would have been seen publicly hugging it out later, last night. (Supposedly Puff Daddy/P.Diddy/Sean Combs has said the two men "have worked it out.") But why no photos of that?

With Cancel Culture the way it is nowadays, it would have been foolhardy for Will Smith to agree to a stunt like that. That's probably also why he was crying. He could be canceled and pressure created for him not to be allowed to work again. We should be talking about his win today. What Oscar winner, who waits a lifetime for a win, wants people talking about him slapping someone INSTEAD? That's a ridiculous idea. Will and Jada were complaining after Ali and some of his other movies that he should have been nominated or won THEN. The focus should have been on his work, not a SLAP. I think only people who've never created something unique and personal and special, would think this was a stunt. People who create something, truly do want some recognition that their work counts in a meaningful way.

It was definitely not a stunt.

The slap, I could see as a stunt.

The mouthing off afterwards...nope. That's how you know it was real.

And Will did not apologize to Chris in his speech.

Nor did he even thank Jada.

Will was laughing at the joke until he looked over at Jada. There were dozens of other ways he could have supported his wife that would have been more affective. But in the end, it looks like he knew he was in trouble with her and picked the worst possible way.

He did not apologize. He excused it.

That's the part that's odd to me (aside from the assualt in general). So he thought it was funny enough to smile and chuckle. Then sees his wife feels very differently. So isn't the move to stop smiling/laughing and grab her hand? How on earth does your emotion go from "this is funny" to "I'm so pissed at you". It's possible to find humor in something and have your spouse/partner be hurt and then adapt to that. It seems IMPOSSIBLE to go from "this is funny" to "I'm going to assault you for saying such a thing". It's really weird.

Like is the thinking that he saw her face and IMMEDIATELY knew it was so "offensive" that he had to get physical? And if so, how is it possible that he first thought it funny? I would think the move is to stop laughing, talk to her about what her thoughts were, and then talk to Rock afterward? Maybe she just thought it was a stupid joke.

I don’t think he did either.. She’s had super short hair for years. It seemed like a tame, kind of lame joke to me. I never knew she had a condition.

I stay semi-informed in pop culture (though never have seen her red table show), and had no idea. She's a stunning woman with or w/o hair.

I also don't think Chris knew about her condition. I think he was just comparing her to the iconic Demi Moore character who was totally bad ***. Jada does not look sick, or weak. It's quite the opposite, she looks fierce and strong and I thought her head was shaved because the wanted it that way. If she did look sick or feeble, then Chris would be wrong for picking on an ill person.

Exactly my take. GI Jane was a bad *** and Demi was a stunning bald woman. I understand why she may not have taken it as a compliment, but it is a gigantic stretch to suggest it was an insult of any kind! I'd actually be interested in Jada in military leadership or something. She'd probably be great in a role like that!

2. Regina Hall groping the male actors over the "covid" tests was beyond cringe-worthy. There is NO WAY that would have flown if the host were a male and the same rules should apply to her.

That was terrible. I was uncomfortable with the dialog (even though it was delivered very well) but the pat-down was beyond. Equality or nah?

Sorry I missed it , looks like a wild one :rolleyes1
I will catch up with reading the thread. Sadly working two jobs puts a damper on these things . Thanks Imzadi for the invite

Oh, well in this case there are plenty of witnesses and video of the incident, so sure, they could prosecute and likely win. Also though, a guy got slapped - do we really need all that?

Again, Will Smith was definitely in the wrong here - absolutely 100% no question about it. But I can also leave it to be between him and Chris Rock to settle it.
Yes, we really need all that. Unfortunately the human race seems to only care about things once there are consequences. Not to mention the insanely ridiculous message it sends. He chose to get up and assault someone on national tv. If he wanted to keep it between him and Chris then he shouldn't have done something so egregious in front of the world.

You missed a "good" one this year. ;) All those seasons we complained the Oscars was slow and boring that year, Will Smith made up for it this year. :duck:  ;)

Lady Gaga is the embodiment of a life led with love and light at the forefront. She is the real deal. This world needs more of that.

Will Smith needs to get some help. He has snapped.

I am going to watch Coda now.

That is all.

The gentleness and respect that Lady Gaga has shown both Liza and Tony Bennett is to be commended.

Will Smith ruined his own moment. Dumb.

Coda is excellent. I broke down to pay for the 7 day Apple TV trial so that I could watch it again.

I would guess that security never imagined they would have to stop someone from the audience from hitting a presenter. They probably worry about non-invited people trying to crash.

Will was absolutely wrong to do it, but, you know, sometimes with guys, they get in a fight and someone gets smacked. Then you buy him a drink and that's the end of it. It's certainly not an ideal way to handle a situation, but it's also not that big of a deal either, other than this being on a very public stage. It's between Chris Rock and Will Smith - that's good enough for me.

So assault is only a big deal if it's done in public?
I guess all those people smacking others behind closed doors can breathe a sigh of relief.

Sorry but someone not being able to handle themselves and resorting to violence when they just don't like what they hear IS a big deal no matter where you are. That's why there are actual laws against it. You can't have a civil society if everyone just went around hitting people because they don't like something a person says or does. If you want to be a part of society then don't act like a brainless animal.
I do agree that if CR doesn't want to pursue it that is fine, but I don't understand the brushing off the incident like it was nothing.

While the physical altercation is awful, the joke was in bad taste. To make fun of Jada’s medical conduction? I saw a husband supporting his wife.
I imagine if I had to shave my head because of bald spots I would be sensitive too.
And I’m surprised at the comments about their cheating- if their relationship works for them - good for them.
There is a very good chance Rock knew nothing about JPS having alopecia. Despite her chronic oversharing, I would hazard a guess that most Americans don’t keep up with her and her latest announcement. She has often worn her hair VERY closely cropped over the years. Quite possibly, he was just alluding to what seemed like her latest hairstyle being like the lead character in G.I. Jane. Will Smith was out of control and should’ve been escorted out as soon as he physically attacked Rock. Period. And he should never be allowed to return to the Oscars.

Will could be seen laughing at the joke until Jada had a reaction and said something like, "There he goes after me AGAIN." Reminding Will that this is the second time that Chris has made jokes about Jada. That's when he went into hyper-drive, feeling he had to do something to defend his wife.

Here is the clip when Chris was hosting the Oscars in 2016:

That’s still funny.

.Will Smith was out of control and should’ve been escorted out as soon as he physically attacked Rock. Period. And he should never be allowed to return to the Oscars.

And yet, the man was applauded.

Hollywood is weird. Can you imagine if Amy Schumer would have said that joke and was slapped? Are men only allowed to hit men? What are the rules when it comes to assault?

They cheered for him. So disgusting.

Agree, I don't follow Jada, she drives me crazy. I know of most of her stuff, but I had no idea on this until last night.

I dunno, I just can't get all worked up about it. I do agree that Will was in the wrong. It's been recognized and can be dealt with by the parties involved.

At the end of the day though, it just wasn't
the crime of the century. If Chris Rock doesn't want to make a big deal out of it, then neither do I.
Would you feel the same way about a husband hitting his wife? If she doesn't want to press charges or make a big deal of it, it's no biggie?

This mindset that Rock even gets to choose if charges are filed or not:sad2: He is probably embarrassed and doesn't want to make a big deal. Doesn't want to cause anymore issues or attention. Much like when a women is struck. What a strange culture to allow someone to decide if they want to press charges for a crime or not.

The crime was public. End of story. Charges should be pressed. Will Smith is out of control and should face some consequences. Perhaps an intensive in patient anger management course. Because if you have the nerve to walk up on a stage and commit an assault with millions of people watching you, you for sure feel brave enough that you won't get in trouble.

But, again, he was applauded.
