The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I've tried to keep up with this thread, but it has gotten pretty long. I can't remember if this question was answered before or not. My 14 yr old son is running the race with me. He obviously does not have a drivers license. Will he be required to show ID to pick up his race packet? The only picture ID he has is his school ID card.

As a minor, you are signing the waiver for him..

Have I ever mentioned that I *HATE* getting wet? The only time I mind being soaked is in the shower or tub. I don't like to swim and I *really* hate the rain...

...OK, so that being said, I went out and ran 5 miles today IN THE RAIN:cheer2:! I hated every minute of it, but I did it and that is what counts. I figure that the W&D happens, rain or shine, so I better get used to it, just in case. Ugh, I hate puddles and wet feet and rain running down my face, but since I work the next 4 days, I figured I needed to get a decent run under my belt. I went 5 miles in 59:51 so I even kept it under my 12:00/mile goal. I switched up my intervals again and did walk 3/run 9 and it worked pretty good. I wore the Triumph's and had no pain of any kind:thumbsup2.

Yesterday, I cancelled our waitlist for BWV:sad:. Our banking deadline is September 30 and I cannot borrow from next year because I need to bank them all into 2015. I figured the best chance of the WL filling would be at 31 days out...which is October 5. I was waitlisted for a standard studio at the BWV for the final weekend of F&W so my chances were slim anyways. Oh well...I am very excited to be staying at my AKV home:goodvibes.

7 weeks from today, I will be on a plane to Orlando:beach:.

Well, I will end up with a PR no matter what, as long as I finish. I just physically and mentally can't stop and start again with character lines. (And I do want to be under 2:30 to enjoy some park time before I completely crash.) I will absolutely be slowing my pace in places to take in the atmosphere... I do want to enjoy some of the park running to the fullest extent possible. If I felt like I could handle restarting, I'd totally dance through the Osborne Lights section ;).

Nothing like running under the Harvest Moon, last night and tonight.
With how clear the skies were last night and will be tonight, its like running with a spotlight on, no need for my headlamp.

Enjoy the training for a night run.

And BTW, does anyone else feel like the weeks are flying now? :scared1: I swear I was just saying 11 weeks and now in 2 days I can say 7 weeks (until we leave). I think I must be losing days somewhere. ;)

But losing days for Disney is quite allright with this Disney Dork! :cool1: :cheer2: pixiedust:

Yup, this is my goal!!! No PRs for this race, it is all about characters, pictures and looking like a sweaty hot mess in all of them! :cool1::thumbsup2:lmao:

I'm thinking I'm just going to take on the attitude of running as fast as I can for as long as I can, take whatever pics I want, and get to the finish as quickly as possible, so I can enjoy as much of the after-party as possible. Don't want to miss it like I did last year because my cheer section got too snockered waiting for me! :scared1:

Not sure if all the discounted rooms are taken yet, but I'm cancelling my reservation for Pop Century for November 5th-11th in about 5 minutes. So it would be up for grabs for someone who wants it.

I had family which gave me use of timeshare as a gift, so I'll be staying offsite for the first time.

12.5 miles this morning. Fortunately the pouring rain ending before we started. I actually like running in the rain sometimes but not in driving storms.

I am doing a 10 mile race next Sunday to try to have a time for placement.

I haven't posted on here in quite some time and thought that I would pop in and say hello. :wave2:

I'm following Galloway's "upright position" plan for beginners doing the W&D, so today was an easy 4 miles with the first one being a "magic mile". I'm feeling pretty good with how my training is going. My magic mile times are getting shorter and shorter, which is the goal. Today's magic mile was 9:01. I use Nike+ to track my runs(love it!) and when I setup a distance run, it gives me an estimated time based on my previous runs. When I enter 13.1, it estimated my time to be 2:07:50. While I would LOVE to finish in that amount of time, I question whether I could finish with that goal in mind...considering the longer distance, more walk breaks, crowds, etc.

My longest run so far was 9.5 and my time was 1:34 and my pace was 9:53, so I would love to target a 10 minute mile and hope for a finish time of 2:15 (5 extra minutes for crowds, etc.) Do this sound reasonable? (My first half marathon and first Disney race, so I really don't know that I'm in for-lol!)

I have a 10K on 10/12 and my goal is to come in under 1 hour - even if it's 59:59. :hourglass I plan to submit my time at the expo. Are any of you submitting race times for corral placement? It would be awesome to find fellow disers to chat with in our corrals while we wait for the race to start. My dh plans to drop me off and drive to epcot before the race starts.

Best of luck to all of you now that we're down to the nitty gritty of our training.

:)

If only I had that kind of pace.....people like me are envious of people like you.

I am also doing the "upright position" Galloway and but never do Magic Miles. I never quite figured them out. Anything over 4 miles I do in intervals and that's it.

I'm so terribly slow and while I know that I will not be swept, I am almost ashamed to say I'm "running" a Half Marathon. I have co-workers that are runners and they are all A and B corral material and I feel like I'm not qualified enough to talk to them. Doesn't help that that's how they treat me sometimes.... :p

I'll do my 4 miles tomorrow but I'm just hanging on and hoping not to embarrass myself too bad in November. Or maybe I'm just feeling slimy today......:sad::sad::sad:

I'm not sure if this is true for your coworkers but not many people (ok, we know there are at least about 100k each year I guess but of the general population that's not much) get to run in a DISNEY race! So fast or not, you've got that cool factor. Plus there's the fact that only something like 1% of the population completes a half marathon. So just remember that it's quite an accomplishment, whether it takes you 2 hours or 3 and a half. Enjoy what your body and your mind and your WILL is able to do and be proud!

A magic mile is simply a "test" of how fast you can complete one mile - however that is. Galloway recommends that you run each lap or quarter mile segment progressively faster so you don't fade out before you finish. I believe he also says that many people find they have a better time when they take a short walk (10-15 seconds) in the middle. Then u just take your time (9:00, 11, 14, whatever it is) and multiply by 1.2. That is his predicted pace for you for a half marathon distance under IDEAL circumstances (weather, crowds, how you are feeling physically, etc).

Awww, don't feel that way. You should be so amazed & proud of yourself for sticking it out and training for a HALF MARATHON! That's huge! You shouldn't compare your numbers w/anyone else. When I started running, my SIL(seasoned runner) always said, "Run your own race." It really helped w/not getting discouraged doing local 5k's. I'm sorry if posting my stats discouraged you. I just hoped to connect w/the group, but I never intended to discourage. Don't let your A/B co-workers get you down either. If we all compare ourselves to others, we're setting ourselves up for a butt-kicking...if we set our own goals to do our "PB"(personal best), we can go out there on race day with plans to seriously kick butt! :)
As far as the magic mile goes, basically you time yourself & run your fastest mile( take as many walk breaks as you need.). Your goal is to get faster each time.
Let us know how you make out tomorrow! You can do this & you won't embarrass yourself in November when you're wearing your medal around your neck!
:)

Just to give you an idea here is my experience with Disney race and a local one:

My first half was the Disneyland half. I did it in 3:07. I started in the F coral. It was the next to last. I stopped for 1 picture took several while on the run. Taking in the entertainment on the way , crowded paths, forced to walk definitely slowed me down that and It was HOT and HUMID!!!
2 weeks later I ran a local 1/2 in 2:50. 64 degrees more hills than the Disney half and shaved off 17 minutes.
I followed the same plan end upright with a smile. What he doesn't say is you will have a smile and tears of happiness at the same time:goodvibes

Awww, Denice that makes me so sad you feel that way. I had these feelings when I first started running too, but very quickly came to the self realization that I am in a race of 1. I don't try to race against anyone else anymore, I just do my best and I felt so much better. Do I have times when I hear people are running 2 minutes per mile faster than me and I feel bad, yes. But I am lapping my husband and lots of my friends who never even will attempt what we are doing. I am proud of myself for having the courage to even try.

I saw this on the RunDisney Facebook and it is so true!!! "I'll never be the fastest, and hopefully I'll never be the slowest. My personal best may have already been achieved with my very first race. I'm just thankful that the good Lord has given me the ability to get up off of my rear and make it happen. No matter how fast, no matter how slow, I will strive to do the very best that I can and give it all that I have because, as they say, a mile is a mile, no matter if it's an 8 minute mile or a 16 minute mile. I just enjoyed it a little bit longer than some. There is no such thing as last place. You're really only the last to win!"::yes::

Denise - I love this! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Strawberry's Mom & Dad...wow a 17 minute difference is amazing! That helps me to put things into perspective w/timing too. :)

Okay fellow wine and diners, I'm off to run my 9-miler for the weekend. Have to say, despite having run several runs longer than 9 miles in the past year, I'm still nervous! Can't seem to quiet the nagging voice in my head that has been pointing out all of the little aches and pains and chastising me for not drinking enough water or eating properly this weekend. Hopefully I can at least drown it out with some new songs I just added to my playlist!

Go do it! Sometimes it's just hard to get out the door. I had to skip my long run this week for medical reasons (my thyroid is way out of whack and vitamin D is deficient). I did a 5k on the runway at our airport yesterday, had a PB at 35:49 and DS took first in his age group (1-19) with a time of 20:49. Pretty proud of my 13 year old speedy one, lol. Hoping to get back to running three times this week, I don't even have the energy for putting in a full day of work so the running is just too much this past week.

Keep up the training everyone!

Thanks! I did it! It actually went ok. A couple minor issues here and there (hamstring pain at about the 8.25 mile mark- figures- but it went away) and my knees are holding up at least for now. The best part is I feel a LOT better this year after a 9 mile run than I did last year at this point in my training. I think most of it is having a better handle on hydration and nutrition and some luck (fewer injuries/illnesses at this point this year). I'm hoping things stay this way!

I hope you start feeling better soon! Running on a runway sure sounds cool!

Thanks gang for the cheer-up. I've been particularly slimey about things in general lately (work, training, etc....) and I had to vent.

So on that note, I went out today for my 4 miles before church. I ran out of time and only wound up doing 3.6 but it's better than nothing and I ran with a metronome for the first time.

Doesn't someone else on this board run with a metronome? I definitely liked it and it gave me a pace I was super happy with. I think I just have to work up the endurance to keep that pace for longer. The sad thing is is that it means no music, just the soft beep in my ear.

Just keep running.....just keep running......just keep running......

Looks like possibly training doldrums along with work/life issues have kicked in.

Not to worry. It's all about scheduling and trying to fit in your long runs. What many folks find is that the long run starts to become tedious. Don't let it. Run your course backwards. Play a game with counting the number of runners in yellow. Plug in the ipod. Try to make each mile exactly the same interval.

There are lots of things you can do to spice up the run. Figure out what works and then bank that. You may need that little mental game on race day to pull you out of a trouble spot.

It's a short 7 weeks to race day. Even if you have not pushed out on many long runs to date, there is still plenty of time to get into race condition.

Hang in there gang.
