The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I've said it before and I'll say it again...I have taken the "run" out of "RunDisney":goodvibes. For me, I don't want to "run" the 1/2 marathon...I want to "participate" in it. I look at it as a unique way to see Disney World and interact with characters spread over 13.1 miles. Since I am required to complete this tour in less than 3 1/2 hours, I must train myself to move at a faster pace. Sure, it would be nice to say that I finished my first 1/2 marathon in under 3 hours, but I would rather have a nice batch of photos along the way to show how much fun it was! For me, it is probably going to be the only chance I will have to participate in a RunDisney event. Schedules and finances just happened to align this year to allow us to do it. There is very little chance it will happen again so I want to really enjoy it. I'd love to turn in a great time, but since this will be my first attempt at 13.1, I know that it will be my fastest so I will not be disappointed:cheer2:.

Today, I set out intending on going 10 miles. I have 2 pairs of shoes that I run in...my Saucony Cohesions and my Saucony Triumphs. Until now, I had always used my Cohesions only for runs less than 5 miles. For those longer runs (and a few shorter ones), I would use the Triumphs. I made the mistake today of trying the Cohesions (a lighter shoe) on a long run. Ugh:headache:! By mile 5, my shoes felt like there was no support at all and my feet felt like they were slipping around in the shoes. This is odd because the Cohesions are actually a half-size SMALLER than my Triumph's:confused3. By mile 6, my feet and ankles were hurting...by mile 7, my knees and hips joined the party...and by mile 8, I resorted to walking more than running. I was on a "loop" so I was forced to continue by the time I hit mile 5...the shortest route back to home was 4 miles! I trudged through, determined to make 9 miles and stay under a 13 minute pace. To my surprise, I finished at a 12:19 pace:yay:. I am really sore, despite a lot of stretching, and I am headed for a nice, cold shower now to try and calm my muscles. I'll follow that up with a little Tylenol and some ice to my knees for about 20 minutes. The last time I was this sore after a run was when I tried the Brooks Dyad's. I totally blame the shoes! No more Cohesions on the long days...I'm sticking to the Triumphs:thumbsup2.

Great perspective! :thumbsup2 And a double :thumbsup2:thumbsup2 for the Triumphs! Saucony fans seem to be few and far apart here, so it's nice to know I'm not the only one they seem to work well for. :yay:

Thanks to the Prairie Princess Runners blog yesterday, I found this! http://mountstream.com/shop/mountain-stream-elite-the-product-shop.html
No more painful ice baths for me!!!:dance3: :cheer2: :cool1:

I've been lurking on this board for about a month now. We are planning to run the Wine & Dine half next year so I'm curious to know how your experience will be. I've never run a half. I just started running this year and have done a few 5ks & have a 10k on Saturday. I will definitely need the year to build up to a half!

Made in Canada!!! They must have heard me screaming when I took my first ice bath last week and then came up with the idea!!

Sent from my iPhone using DISBoards

Stargirl I love all the pictures!! Those are fantastic, thanks for sharing them with us :) You really got a lot of good character pics on the way through the races

Fantastic pictures, Stargirl! You obviously have a blast at these races. Love it!

So, two things tonight:

First, I had a blue Mickey running shirt that DH bought me at the ToT expo last year. I love this shirt because it matches my favorite running shorts. Well, the shirt went missing just before our big summer trip. When I came home, I ransacked the house and concluded that I must have left it at the gym in the week before we traveled and so it was a lost cause. (They donate unclaimed gym clothes within two weeks and it had been five.) I have tried all summer to replace the shirt with a plain shirt to match my favorite running shorts with no success. Today, i was looking for a book and there was my shirt, balled up behind the magazine basket by the bed. I know I've looked there before but I must have missed it since it was stuffed behind. Of course, from the smell of the shirt, it was only a matter of time before it rose from its hiding place to smother me in my sleep. I hope I can save it with a really good baking soda soak because it hadn't been laundered after its last run and sat for over three months. Ick!!

Second, I feel very dumb saying this but I run much faster with food in my system. I always run in the morning on an empty stomach. 6am on weekdays and 6:45 for my weekend long run. Well, this morning it was too dark to hit the trails before DH had to work so I decided I'd run this evening. (Because I really should be doing a few evening runs anyway to get ready .) Well, I hit my first mile 30 seconds faster than usual. I ended up finishing over 20 seconds per mile quicker than my typical pace for 3-4 miles. It was one of those "duh" moments for me. I'm still not going to eat before my weekday runs because I don't want to get up at 5:15 to eat and digest and I cannot tolerate food less than an hour before running. But it was interesting to note the difference. Of course, it may have been a complete fluke. We'll have to see next week.

Let me sum it up this way as last year was my first...as soon as I finished I swore I'd never do another runDisney race ever again (crowds, running alone,
blahblahblah). One week later, "when can I register for next year's Wine and Dine! :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2: Lurking on the DIS and finally jumping into the conversations makes all the difference! :thumbsup2 :grouphug: :cheer2:

I know I won't end up running the whole race. More like jogging along until I see a character to take a picture with. :rotfl: And those pictures will not be shared because I look like a hot mess when I run! :lmao:

Welcome! You can definitely do a half next year. I started running in the middle of January after a friend told me she had just run the Disney marathon. Disney? Running? That sounded like more fun than just running. :thumbsup2 Here I am now 8 months later. I have run a few 5Ks, a file miler, 2 10K, a 8 miler, a 11.6 miler, 2 1/2 marathons, I have 2 local 1/2 marathons coming up in the next 4 weeks and W&D in November and in January I am doing the marathon. You can do this! Have fun with your training and if you have any questions just ask. ;)

Oh that poor shirt! Hopefully it can be resurrected! :lmao::rotfl2:

No duh moment on the food. I have had it too. I was going slow during my morning runs and then on the weekend runs when I go a little later I found I was running faster. It is just neat to see what tweaking our routines just a tad will do for our pace. And finding out what works best. :)

Wow! Great job! :thumbsup2 I've definitely been taking notes from you guys and found a half marathon training schedule online. Does anyone know of an app for that? I know they have them for 5k and 10k (I'm currently using one!). It's over a year away but I'm really looking forward to it.

Yup, this is my goal!!! No PRs for this race, it is all about characters, pictures and looking like a sweaty hot mess in all of them! :cool1::thumbsup2:lmao:

Oh I can't wait to see all of these pictures. I'll share next year if you guys share this year. :rotfl:

Same here! If I want to run a race for a PR I'll do it at home. PRs won't ever happen for me at Disney for many reasons...course crowding, distraction due to running through the parks and pictures with characters, etc. :thumbsup2

I can certainly understand the viewpoint of those of you that don't stop for pictures though! :goodvibes I hope those of you going for PRs get them!

If you use runkeeper to track your runs, there a number of half training programs available on there

I've tried to keep up with this thread, but it has gotten pretty long. I can't remember if this question was answered before or not. My 14 yr old son is running the race with me. He obviously does not have a drivers license. Will he be required to show ID to pick up his race packet? The only picture ID he has is his school ID card.
