The "Newest" Moms Hangout...

Hi everyone. I will go back and read the thread tomorrow and reply to all the activity then. I just wanted to say we are home and our LO is recovering well.

We put him to bed on Tuesday night around 930 and he was coughing all night. He was waking up about every hour and at 3 was having a hard time taking a whole breath. His head was bobbing up and down and he was running a small fever. I drove him to the hospital and they admitted us right away.

His oxygen level was in the low 80s so they did a breathing treatment. They brought in a bubbling tower to distract him from taking the mask off and he fell asleep watching it. The doctor yanked back the curtain and he jumped and began screaming. He didn't even try to comfort him in the least. I was really disappointed and spoke to someone about it. I don't care if he's impolite to me or impatient with me, but my child deserves to be cared for better than that.

They decided to start an IV in case they needed to give him steroids later. They tried almost 6 times and couldn't find a way to make it work. After poking both arms twice and his foot, I told them he was done trying for a while and scooped him off the bed. They weren't happy with the progress he made so they sent us to the PICU. I felt so bad for him. He was so sleepy and wanted to nurse and nap. They let me nurse him while checking him in and he fell asleep. He slept from 8 until 11 and got treatments every 3 hours. He slept off and on all afternoon and took a good nap while my husband went to get our son from grandma's house. It was naptime and DH was coming back with DS for dinner.

His last treatment was around 9 and DS and DH went home for the night. We could see each other out the window of the PICU. It was strange seeing him drive away. I've never stayed in the hospital alone before, let alone with one of our babies while the other went home. I was so tired.

Since we put the kids down with no night lights, LO had a hard time closing his eyes. The room was a double glass door with a curtain so most of the light could come in. He just thought it was time to play. So after rocking him for a half hour I asked if we could move. They had stepdown rooms which were more like mother/baby rooms so we were able to switch. They wheeled his crib in the room and when they closed the door he was asleep.

His oxygen stayed at 95 or better all night and he only coughed once. His official diagnosis was bronculitus. Yes, they initially thought flu or RSV. Both came back negative. They let us go home this afternoon and he took a huge 3.5 hour nap. He's happliy playing on the floor. After two days of sitting with us and in bed he was ready to crawl away as fast as he could.

Thanks for the well wishes. :goodvibes I really appreciate them. I know we don't always have time to reply on each person's posts as sometimes it's like a running conversation. But to know that he was thought of makes me smile.

Ok I'm going to try a go at breastfeeding again and was wondering when I should expect the hind milk to pass to him during the feeding? Also when should I change breasts? Thanks

Have you been to www.kellymom.com ? That is a great site for questions and issues you have breastfeeding.

As for when to change sides, I don't unless I think the baby isn't full.

Have you been using bottles? You may need to work with a lactation consultant or LLL leader to help you transition back to breast. It might be hard work, but it's soo worth it and it will all work out.

My gosh you've all been chatty today!

Shootingstarmom, how scary! I'm glad your little one is better!

Welcome to our new member, and the baby pics are so cute!

I usually don't switch sides when nursing. I just swap from session to session. In the mornings, I set an alarm at 5, nurse on one side, go back to sleep until 6, then nurse on the other side before work. That is just so I won't end up at work lopsided!:rotfl:

I reworked my adrs last night, so I can see the new fireworks at MK on June 6. I just couldn't stand it! I was able to get what I wanted, except I had to drop LeCellier. I'm ok with it-really like the new schedule better! Here are my plans:
M 5/31 arrival, DTD, TRex for supper
T 6/1 AK, CM for supper
W 6/2 Epcot, GG for supper (was MK and CP for supper)
Th 6/3 off, WCC for supper (was Epcot and LC, but now we are just going to have a swim, nap, DTD, rest day)
F 6/4 DHS (SWW!), SciFi lunch (was Epcot and GG)
Sat 6/5 MK, CP for supper (was MK but with WCC for supper) ]*******my package ends this day, and so does the DDP, so Sun and Mon are oop********
I'm also surprising my girls with an early morning breakfast at CRT:). The boys and my sister are sleeping in.
Sun 6/6 MK, no adrs-Ds12 just wants Cosmic Rays twice!!!(this was DHS for SWW and SciFi oop)
Mon 6/7 Epcot, then fly home:sad1:

I messed up big time this week. My teaching license expires June 30, which I knew. Our licenses are good for 5 years, and we have to take 2 college courses (or get 10 CEUs) to renew them. I have taken 10 college classes in the last 2 years, and will have my masters in May. So I planned to renew then. I got a call last week from our county office that no, I had to renew now. They are not asking back anyone who doesn't already have a new license-they are looking at ways to cut teachers without really firing anyone. I'm not happy, but no big deal. I had to pay $5 and order my transcripts, fill out a packet of info, and mail it all in. I ordered my transcripts, and 2 days later got an envelope from the college. They have to be sealed in the envelope, so I didn't open it, just stuck it in an envelope with my application and other paperwork and mailed it. Today, guess what showed up at my house-another letter from the college-I opened it to find my transcript! So what the blank did I mail to the state dept of education???????????? I emailed them explaining what happened, and asked for my letter back. This is what happens when you have too much going on! I told someone at work today, before this happened, that if I don't have a nervous breakdown before May that I won't ever have one!

I am doing nothing but pumping right now and feeling I am having no time with the baby. Getting fustrated and disappointed in myself. I am pumping when he is awake and sleeping. I am producing just 2 ounces from both breast with no extra if we wants more which is happening alot. I don't want to warm a 3 oz bottle just for him to not drink an ounce and then be short that ounce for a feeding later. I don't want to only give him 2 ounces and let him be hungry if he wants more.

Try not to get too upset. It's easy to get bogged down when it seems like nothing is going right. Nursing and pumping is hard work, especially when it's all new. It looks so easy when you see people casually making it work but they at one point or another had a hard time. I would agree with a hospital pump if you're going to go long term. I have an Evenflo one I just used in the beginning for over production days but it wouldn't have worked for me all day long.

I'm almost at the point of supplimenting with Alex...we are out of the freezer stash and my supply at work is slowly dwindling. I've been getting less and less in the past few weeks. I think the sitter will have to give him formula tomorrow. I almost made it to 6 months! Just another 13 days and I would have been there!

Congrats on making that far!

Is there a reason you are pumping? I pump at work because I have to, but nurse at home (I'm nursing right now;)). I would not love pumping and giving bottles! It is none of my business-just wondering if there is a reason you are pumping instead of nursing?

I was wondering the same. I'm with you, December. Nursing was impossible in the beginning but now it's so simple I could nurse anywhere.

I've been lurking in this thread since DD was born, just never really posted. Even then nursing your baby is the best way to build up your supply. Those first few weeks I remember nursing all the time. I can't imagine pumping all that time and then having to clean the pump each and every time.

Good luck!

Welcome, I hope you stick around!

*Eta* Has anyone ever done the MOMS club thing? I need to get out of here!!!

I was looking to do the same thing. I found a few chapters on meetup.com but I'm afraid to just jump in. There are sample pictures of a few groups and they seem like a close bunch already. But my 2 best friends don't really get together much anymore, so I'm missing a lot of that. Very cute pictures, btw.

So I had to stop br feeding this week because I have been sick for the past 2 weeks and wasn't getting any better. I was on amoxicillin with no change. I ended up with pneumonia and didn't have much choice. I was planning to stop when she turned one anyways, but it is so bitter sweet.

I can't believe that she will be one in 2 weeks!

Wow, I can't believe a whole year already. I hope you are feeling better. I stopped nursing my first at a year as well. I found out I was pregnant just before his birthday so I think that also had something to do with it. I'm not looking forward to finding a way to stop. We're planning on a third but I won't be ready by the time he's a year old.

Hey DISMoms :) I'd love to join this thread and community.

Welcome Kate! I'm a SAHM with a 28m old and a 9m old. We share a lot of funny stories and good advice too!

So, you've all noticed that I've been chatting up a storm here.....;) Its the caffeine.

So Katie is a work out baby. Not exactly crawling, but up on hands & knees bouncing & bunny hopping & up to her toes in what we call "downward facing baby" -- butt up in the air, very cute.

I was just telling DH about the downward facing baby! I took yoga for a while and really miss it. My last class was the prenatal with my first born. It was so much fun. Maybe I'll find a new yoga place now that I have a little more freedom from nursing 24/7.

You guys are scaring me. Lucas has never had a blow out. I've never had to change an outfit because he got poop on it. I figure it's coming... the more solids he eats, the more poop he will produce is my thoughts. Anyway- I'm scared! I don't carry a change of clothes with Lucas. I did at first but it seemed like I never used it and would just pull it out, not even worn once, to replace it with the next size. So I stopped doing it.

Wow, now THAT is brave! I have to carry an outfit for each and have an emergency bag with diapers, wipes, and extra pants in the van.

Hopefully Lily will like the solids more and more. Have you tried fruits yet or just veggies? how about yogurt? Allison wasn't sure about the yogurt at first and now she can't get enough!

We just gave our LO yogurt for the first time last weekend. He loved it!

Mainly a lot of chit chat from today. Before that it was kinda quiet. I'm sorry to hear about the hospitalization. Hope all is much MUCH better now. Let me guess.... RSV?

Thank you! No RSV, that is what they thought first. But it came back negative and so did the flu test.

Oh no! Hope everything is okay now. I'm sure it'll be nice to be home!

It's so nice to be home. I will just miss being around the staff. They were awesome. I will not miss the couch/bed or scratchy blanket.

I have some puffs at home that a friend got us, but haven't tried them yet.

We started them around 8 months. He was able to pick them up and put them towards his mouth and they break down quickly. He also likes little bits of soft bread but I don't give him white bread since it just turns into a big lump. He loves sourdough.

I've been spoiled by my first born!
ShootingStar, I hope everything is okay! Glad you get to go home today.

Would he be able to chew an apple if I sliced it up?

I don't think without molars he could mash it up very well. I would bake them or mash it up really well. Did you say you have one of those teether bags that they can bite on? The apple would hold up in it but give him a taste he could handle.

Vinny's birthday is today, and I baked a up a little cake for him, and decorated it. We will get cupcakes. Ill do Jasmines later tonight. We are just giving them cake after dinner. We are going to have cake two nights ina row. Cuz we can. ;):lmao:

Happy birthday(s)!

Ok I'm going to try a go at breastfeeding again and was wondering when I should expect the hind milk to pass to him during the feeding?

You will be very sore for a while. I mean, crying sore. At least I was for a few weeks. It shouldn't hurt when your LO is latched on but you can get worn out fast from the constant activity. But the more you nurse the more your body will get used to it. And if you can keep nursing your supply should go up. Don't worry about the fore/hind milk. I read on Kellymom a good point that I shared with a friend the other day. It's like turning on a faucet waiting for hot water. Here's a quote from there:

"The first water you get out of the tap isn't usually hot, but cold. As the water runs, it gradually gets warmer and warmer and warmer. This is what happens with the fat content in mom's milk - moms's milk gradually increases in fat content until the end of the feeding."

I change sides after each session. So usually 15 on one side, burp, return to other side. If he refused the second side, or only nursed there shortly, I would start there again next time.

We got some pics taken the other day.
Love the headband!

Thanks, December. He's sleeping now so I hope it will be a quiet night.

Ok, now I'm caught up! ;)

I know I missed some posts! You did a good job-there was a marathon here today!

I should be asleep right now. I think I'm too tired to sleep. And someone is sititng in the park (we live right in the middle of the city park) with their radio blaring. That isn't helping anything.

Katie has never had a blowout either. I take an extra outfit in her bag, but have never needed it. Patsy, I need to check the size on it! I know I haven't switched it out in awhile!

She loves puffs! She gets more in the floor than in her mouth, but she loves eating them. She hated baby food, but loves table food. If I'm eating it, she wants it! And still not a tooth in sight!

I'm going to try sleep again. Right now, Katie is nursing-I hope she sleeps well tonight. I have to write my final paper tomorrow. I'm such a procrastinator. After all my other grades posted, I only need a 40 on the paper to have an A in the class. That isn't doing much for my motivation! I'm giving tests all day tomorrow, so at least I can sit and work on it! And as soon as it is done, this class is over!!!!!

Hi,

I've been missing for a few days because my LO was in the hospital. We're going to be checked out today and are just waiting for the nurse to come and give us our paperwork.

I figured I could write a quick note while we were waiting. He had a cold and icky nose for a few days. He had trouble breathing on Tuesday night so I took him to the ER. They did a breathing treatment and it didn't seem to help so we were admitted to the PICU. We stayed there yesterday and last night. He's doing much better now, but I will fill in the gaps once we are back home and settled. Looks like I have a lot to catch up on!

SO scary. Glad he is ok now!

Another crappy night for sleep here. :sad1: I need to wake my older son for school soon. Man, this is tough......

So I thought we were going to be in for a rough night last night. E was crabby in the evening, I knew he needed a nap, but he just wanted to fuss. I nursed him about 8 last night, planning on giving him a bottle at 9. Started giving him his bottle. He drank about 2 ounces, and promptly spit it all back up. Then, he fell asleep HARD! I tried everything to wake him up. No go. Finally, about 9:45, I decided that I should just put him down, knowing I would probably be up with him in like an hour. Imagine my surprise when I heard him fussing, I looked at the clock, and it said 3:15!!! i WAS SHOCKED!!

Guess he was full & just needed some quality time in bed. Glad someone got some sleep......

Ok I'm going to try a go at breastfeeding again and was wondering when I should expect the hind milk to pass to him during the feeding? Also when should I change breasts? Thanks

I generally don't switch breasts either. Not unless I've pumped recently so may not be as much milk there at the ready & the baby seems fussy possibly still hungry after feeding on one side. If you are working on increasing supply, double pump just after breastfeeding. You'll have milk on hand to supplement if needed (think v. small bottles 1 1/2 to 2 oz only) and double pumping stimulates supply better than single. I second the advice to head on over to kellymom.com -- some of the best breastfeeding info on the web IMO.

We had a bout of bronchiolitus a while back too. We are now the proud owners of a nebulizer. :thumbsup2 Anyway in Dylan's case we had a virus in the house that everybody but him recovered from. He did not appear to be in acute distress, but after 2 weeks he was also not getting better. A few nights of albuterol in the nebulizer at home was all he needed to get over the hump. Glad your LO is home & on the mend.

I promise it will get better. I never thought I was going to sleep again... But now they are BOTH sleeping through the night. It only took until they were 11 months old. :headache: I actually went to sleep at 10 the other night, and woke up at 5 with my husband, wide awake and ready to go. I hadn't gotten that much sleep straight through in a long time!

Another great resource is the La Leche League forums (http://forums.llli.org/index.php) .. I've been reading those on a daily basis lately!

I think I read on kellymom re: hindmilk , to think of it like when you turn on the hot water side on the faucet... it's cool when it starts and gradually gets warmer. The milk will gradually get fattier in content as the baby drinks more.

Good luck, mama. Pumping/nursing all take dedication! :)

So maybe by JUNE I'll get some rest. Oh good. Something to look forward to..... I'm so tired....

But its the weekend, so at least my DH should be around to help out somewhat. We can take turns feeding Katie all night long. Goody.

Twinfants have royally kicked my a$$. Something has happened that I never thought would. I have decended in crappy dog ownership. I feel like the kind of owner that gets their animals taken away on Animal Cops..... Sometime in the last week my dog started limping, but he was getting around so we watched & waited. Now he looks like his shoulder is bulging. Poor dog. Maybe he injured himself on all the snow & ice we've had. I dunno. Getting him to the vet is very tough. But we have a Sunday appt. Before twins he would have never had to wait this long to get medical attention. And he's old. Someday when he's gone, I think we need a break from having pets. Until the babies are way more self sufficient, at the very least.

Oh.. and I thought I would mention both babies started walking last night!!! They have both taken a step or two here and there.. But last night they just decided to get up and walk around!!!! I couldnt believe it! BOTH!! On the SAME NIGHT!! Crazy!

:hug:Im sorry about your dog. It IS hard trying to take care of everything you normally do! I was up at 5 yesterday, and I was on my feet cleaning, taking care of stuff... just totally on the go until midnight last night. I finally sat down, looked around.. my house was a MESS. Everything was destroyed. I was like...:confused3 what the heck have I been doing all day?? I feel like I spend half my day chopping up food small enough for them to eat!! Breakfast, lunch, dinner... snacks! JEEZ! I am out of groceries.. but have I had time to hit the store?? Not so much. I have a friend coming to visit today that I havent seen in years.. I was trying to get my house presentable. Its decent, but still.. Oh well. She will understand. I hope!

I wish I could blame my lack of sleep on Lucas. He sleeps a million times better than me. I'm so exhausted and it's not even his fault. A lady at the grocery store told me I had a newborn exhaustion look. I was like "Excuse me?"... she was flabbergasted when I told her Lucas has been sleeping through the night for months now.
It's my own stupid body that won't sleep. ugh.

I have felt like crap all day. My throat is sore, I have zero energy and I'm burning up. I actually turned the heat off and put Lucas' coat on because I was sweating.
I'm trying to stay away from him.. it's obvious I've got SOMETHING.. but it's hard to do! I curled up on the couch and let him have his run of the living room. I think he thought that was the coolest thing ever. There are DVDs everywhere! I just let him do whatever he wanted as long as he wasn't going to hurt himself.
The dog has started playing with him. It's cute to watch... Rink is just a Shih-Tzu so they're about the same size! He lets Lucas chase (read: slowly crawl after) him now. It's pretty adorable. Rink hated Lucas at first so I'm pretty excited they're getting to be friends.

Megan, that is so awesome that the twins are walking! And they did it together. Aww.

Sounds like everyone had the same kind of night. Katie woke up at 3am, starving apparently. She nursed until 6! Everytime I would doze off, she would hit me and yell at me, like I was crazy to try to sleep when she was hungry! Dh says he is moving back to the couch!

I'm still expecting her to walk any day, but she won't let go! She has to hurry up if she is going to beat ds12's record!

I thought my paper was due at 5, but I have until midnight. I got 4 pages done at school today, out of the 8 mandatory. It is probably enough for the 31 (redid the grades-only need a 31 for an A), but I just can't half-xxx it! Just the teacher in me I guess.....

Growth spurt or over eating?

DS has been eating alot more since I have been giving him formula to help keep up with his food needs. Here is his current 24 hour eatings.

21oz day 11
22oz day 12
21oz day 13
20oz day 14
28oz day 15 his latest feeding really jumped here

He was averaging about 2 oz a feeding 8 times in a 24 hour period now he is bumping up to 3 oz per feeding. He seems to also want to eat every 1 1/2 to 2 hours instead of every 3 hours at the 3 oz a feeding.

Does his onces look ok to you for his age? I read he should be having a growth spurt soon. Feeding him correctly is my biggest worry. I am pumping and giving formula to keep up with his needs.

UPDATE
DH weighed DS this morning and he has gained 8 oz in 5 days. He weighed 6lbs 3 1/2oz at his appointment on Tuesday and now he is 6lbs 12 1/2oz today which is Saturday.

Burping Question

I can't get him to burp after every meal. He does not fuss but I know he needs to burp. I usually place him in his Boppy and he'll end up bring it up himself within the hour of feeding. Should I be concerned it takes that long for the gas to move. Should I not worry about it cause it dosn't seem to bother him. DH is great at getting him to burp after every meal I just can't. DH says he dosn't pat his back but applies pressure as he rubs his back. I can't get that to work for me. Any advice?

Count me in for another one that had a bad night last night. I better see teeth soon or I'm going to hunt down the Tooth Fairy and kick her butt! :thumbsup2

Oh.. and I thought I would mention both babies started walking last night!!! They have both taken a step or two here and there.. But last night they just decided to get up and walk around!!!! I couldnt believe it! BOTH!! On the SAME NIGHT!! Crazy!

lol Crazy!! How funny!:lmao:

DH says he dosn't pat his back but applies pressure as he rubs his back. I can't get that to work for me. Any advice?

Another good point for breastfeeding. Breastfed babies normally will not overeat like they do with formula, but this early on I HIGHLY doubt he is overeating no matter what it is. If he is not splitting up, then he's fine.

Formula is deceptive when compared with breastmilk. LOs will eat more formula, because breastmilk is perfect for them nutritionally for what they need at any point in their life, but formula is not, so they eat more of it.

I would chalk it up to a growth spurt and formula weirdness and not worry at all.

Burping

Don't worry about it!!
That said, I would try laying him face down across your lap and rubbing his back. I've always had a hard time burping Lily, but that usually worked in the early days.
Just really pay attention when your DH does it. Rubbing always worked better for us than patting.
