The *New* Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa Frequently Asked Questions (FEB2004) Part 2

Heather,
Thanks for the pix. We were just at the Grand for our 10 year vow renewal with our entire family---16 adults, 11 children 9 and under. We almost always do RPC for at least part of our trips and since this trip was once in a lifetime, we wanted our family (most of whom had never been to Disney) to stay a while at our favorite spot. We booked and paid for 2 honeymoon rooms (1 reg and 1 turret), 1 reg RPC, and 4 deluxe RPC for 3 nights. Among the many GF missteps this trip, they upgraded my brother, his wife, their infant daughter, my father and my 6'4/250lb 15yo brother to the Victorian Suite. Very nice gesture, would've been much nicer if it were me but clearly they didn't check the notes on number of guests. No, that sofa is not a pullout, nor is it of a size that anyone over 5' could sleep on. So, yes, my dad and brother were "lucky" enough to sleep on rollaways for 3 nights at the Grand. It is, however, a gorgeous suite and they offered to trade with me because they felt so bad but we had the turret honeymoon room so not enough room there for the group either!

While I'm on my little vent, the other things we noticed/experienced this trip. Absolutely impossible to hear from IPO. I emailed several times, wanting to send in room gifts. I finally hear back a couple of days prior to our departure, with a here's the number for private dining. Needless to say, no in room gifts this trip---not that we didn't have enough goodies from the welcome bags and treats from the Mad Hatter Welcome brunch and vow renewal reception.

While there, we had requested several times that my parents room be close to ours since they were supposed to keep the kids. Of course, they were on another floor entirely and it took hours to straighten out---the RPC cm was not very nice to me either--I was in tears after our encounter.

We finally get everyone moved. We're very busy with our events so not much time at the resort. No happy anniversaries, nothing. Except for our old IPO Renee who remembers that I LOVE the teacup pillows and brings one down for our daughter:love: Wish she were still there planning.

When we go to check out to move to the Boardwalk we notice the bills on the doors. I specifically told everyone in no uncertain terms and checked again and was reassured at check in that no one would see how much the rooms were going to be costing us---our family would have had a fit if they knew the cost. One family in particular who had been very nosy and who I REALLY didn't want to find out, not only had a bill, but we had been recharged the entire room amount!

At this point, with dripping wet hair and a room full of cake, bouquets, centerpieces and luggage for 5 people, I'm running around trying to find the other bills on the other doors. We find them all and go to get it straightened out. Well, the gentleman at RPC proceeds to tell me they aren't in my room block, blah blah. Very condescending. He tells me he will try to get the charges taken off but that it was basically my mistake.

At this point I'm furious. We go downstairs and talk with a manager. She was very nice and apologetic. I explain how much we love this resort, even the kids and that we have celebrated many happy occasions here and how this stay was nowhere near magical. Even mentioned the ipo issues and how the "dissers" are all complaining too. She offered us 2 nights to come back. that was very nice. Of course, it will be nice on that trip, we have to call and let them know we're coming. But what about after that? I know the beancounters have done a number on Disney in the last 10 years we've been going, but how about that feeling that they're happy you're there? That doesn't cost anything. I'm not looking for all the freebies, just a feeling that you matter and that they're happy you're there. At the Boardwalk, Pete, Steve, Jackie and the rest give us big hugs and welcome us back and actually want to talk to you--and we've only been there 2 x before this. Same with Don, Sue and the AKL staff. The Poly isn't quite as personal, but so friendly and helpful as well. 14th floor contemporary--the ladies who were there were absolutely fantastic this trip---very helpful and friendly. I do still love the Grand, we have so many fantastic memories there, but I'm just not getting the warm feeling like I used to.

Oh, after we settle up with the manager, as we're getting off the elevators, very loudly the cm from earlier says, I looked it up and they were never in your room block. My hubby says to me, be the bigger person, keep moving. Of course, in the room I have my BEO (event order), group room block, and alpha list which had the family on every single paper, including their room requests!

The one desk cm who was friendly and helpful as always was Joe. Also, our bellman was the best cm by far at the Grand---Jerry. He helped most of my family and was of great service on our checkout day. He personally delivered all 33 pieces of our luggage, dress, cake, flowers, etc to the boardwalk and even drove us to epcot so we wouldn't be late for our ADR's. He was totally old school disney and unfortunately in the minority there lately.

Anyway, thanks for letting me get this off my chest. Yes, we will of course, give the Grand another try but the others are definitely gaining. I don't feel as bad about booking a stay at another deluxe without staying there. I hope they prove me wrong though, I really do.

On a side note, Disney fairy tale weddings did an amazing job! Our events were beyond my wildest dreams. If I win the lottery, I'd do a party there every year!

Lisa

Wow! How generous of you all to do this for your family. (that's my first thought - and what a FABULOUS thing it should have been:goodvibes )

My second thought is about the sloppy service. Wow - again. We are big RPC fans and repeat guests, too, and I noticed a difference in service and CMs, also. I know there have been management changes and many new CMs amoung other things that must be effecting the level of service. Please write a letter or email guest relations regarding the challenges you encountered. I know you spoke with a manager, but the higher ups need to know - and they most likely do not know any of the issues you had. It is so sad to see these changes taking place and read about the disappointments loyal customers are having.

I am going to gawk at your pictures now.:goodvibes The siggy pic looks adorable and I was hoping to see it larger!!!!

lives4disney,

Thanks! I am always loving all your pix and info as well!

Yes, I am hoping to do a letter with the good, the bad, and the ugly for WDW so the ones who were fantastic get their praise heard as well.

Now, I really should email the photo link to my family. Of course, I'm sure you all here on the dis are the ones who will really appreciate the pix!!!:rotfl:

Do you remember this CM name. I'll be happy to avoid him when we get there next month.

Its very disheartening to hear about all these problems. I also received the "here is private dining's phone number" in regard to a request.

I do look forward to hearing about your VR. We did the same for our 10th two years ago.

I LOVE your pictures. They are precious.:wizard:

Ok, dumb questions ahead..... Where was the reception? How was the band? I just want to ride in the carriage, haha. When I saw the first pics of you standing near it, I kept thinking to myself..."Get in, get in.." And you did!!!!:thumbsup2 How cool was that carriage ride?! Does the rest of your group love WDW? We (our small little family) are the only ones that love the place. Nobody else ever cares to go and we cannot talk them into it. Whatever. It looks like you had a beautiful day and everything looks so pretty - you inluded.:) Your husband and you look so cute and happy & your kids are absolutely adorable. Hope the kids remember this special event.:goodvibes

Where were you all watching the fireworks?? Was that a private party area, too??

I'd love more details if you have time.

Thanks for sharing,

Livinthedisneydream- how awful that the GF staff couldn't get it together for your trip!! It truly blows my mind how the "flagship" resort seems to have so many problems for some and none for others. How do you not put fully trained, fully capable people in the positions dealing with premium customers??? That it the kind of nonsense I expect from a Motel 6, not a $600 a night "Resort" :sad2: We have never stayed on the concierge level before at the GF and these reviews certainly don't make me want to pony up the extra money to do so!!

I am so-o-o-o- glad, however, that the Wedding Staff, put together a magical celebration for you. :wizard: It almost makes the above nonsense trivial (almost ;) ) ITA that you need to contact some higher ups at the GF and voice your displeasure. That is unacceptable- especially the CM who smart mouthed you. He should be removed from that position immediately!!

And completely OT, my ticker moved from months to days!!!!!!!! :woohoo:

When we got home, I wrote a letter to the General Manager of the GF, with copies to the Executive Office at WDW and to Jay Rasulo, Chairman of WDW Resorts & Parks, to express our disappointment at the lack of service and appreciation for repeat loyal guests, as well as to commend Jerry & Brett of Bell Services. I got a call back from a staffer at the Executive Office apologizing for our experience, but nothing else to try and entice us back... :sad2:

That's pathetic. :sad2: When were you there, Dingo?? Just curious....I know management changed early this year and NOBODY seems happy about the changes they've made over there. The "Be our guest" attitude has gone down hill. I still have some favorite wonderful RPC CMs, but w/out them our stays would be so-so.

I saw you tried the Dolphin....we stayed at the Swan in May and had a cruddy time (room, housekeeping, misc. other problems) & then to top it off they charged us rack rate vs the AP or AAA rate I was booked under and couldn't fix it at check out despite I was holding a copy of my ressie & rate. It did get fixed thru several phone calls and aggravation and help from DU. I did their little online survey and got a call a few days later from ex housekeeper. They did send me a free nt certificate at least to give them another try. Small thing, but at least they seemed to care about all the issues we had. I will try them again because of the SPG program, mostly.

We stayed there the 1st week in June... and you're not kidding about their "Be Our Guest" attitude having gone downhill. We spoke with Jerry & Brett for a long time and they told us about how the GF has slowly changed for the worst. Both of them have worked there for about 14 years so they've seen alot & heard from a lot of guests who are disappointed also.

We haven't stayed at the Dolphin yet. That's for our next trip in March. I'm sorry to hear about the Swan. I hope we won't get such cruddy service at the Dolphin. Have you decided where you're going next year?

About the S/D....The executive housekeeper that called me apologized up and down esp when she found out what room we had....they are now in the process of redoing all the rooms so you will probably get a new, refurbished room at the Dolphin in March. :thumbsup2 OR, it's something you might want to request. Not sure what the schedule is or what the timeline is, but they started this spring w/Swan top floors down and after that is complete, on to the Dolphin.

About the GF....Jerry is really great. He doesn't know us nor us him, but our RPC room wasn't ready on a trip a year or so back and we had Ohana ressies and by the time we finally got our room it was pushing it to get to Ohana on time. Jerry was our bell svc CM and he offered to drive us over in the golf cart. It was such fun....he'd yell to people on the pathway "VIPs coming thru"...:rotfl: and other silly stuff. We saw the Cindy carriage during that ride, too. Funny how the little things stick with ya. He was really awesome and DH tipped him a goodly amt.:goodvibes Made it to Ohana and had a nice time!!!

I wish they'd get their act together again at the GF. SAD because these changes in management have benefited NO ONE. :sad2: Guests and loyal CMs alike, it seems. I honestly thought the GF GM would care more & I am very disappointed at the lack of REAL response you got. :guilty:

We aren't sure where we are going for spring break. The bummer is our break is always the last week in March and Easter falls the first weekend of our break so no matter WHERE we go it will be so crowded. WDW is still a possiblity, but I am nervous about the crowd level - and of course it's peak season pricing!;) I am just not sure it's worth paying top dollar to be there with the crowds we may encounter.:confused3 The kids want to go to DL again, but still concerned about megacrowds.

Happy planning,

Lives4Disney :)

Lisa, what beautiful vow renewal photos! It looks like you had your reception at one of the GF rooms, and then an Illuminations dessert party. Is that right? I'm guessing that you probably had the Custom wedding, not the Escape one, since you had all those extras :) Very nice, and such lovely pictures. I especially liked the cake at the Mad Hatter breakfast. How cool was that!

My husband and I had batted around the idea of a VR for our upcoming 5th anniversary, but what with the house under construction, we decided not to swing it this year. Maybe some later date! I'd love to do what we did for our wedding, and get our immediate families back to WDW for a nice family vacation, like what you did with your VR.

I would also be curious to know the name of the CM who tried to one-up you. What a punk... Definitely write to the higher-ups; I know that someone earlier posted good names for you. They need to be made aware that they're alienating the loyal guests.

Channing, the Spring Break time here is PACKED at WDW. Seriously, majorly crowded. Of course, you came here for Christmas this past year, so you might be okay with that level of crowds. It's slightly less crowded than at Christmas time, but still unpleasantly so. On the other hand, there always seem to be some parks that you can hit on "off" times, like we were at AK on Christmas morning, and it was dead.

The best time to come (don't tell anyone!) :) is the weekend after MLK weekend in January. The crowds then were much more adult in general, so probably fewer problems with tots spewing at the Rose & Crown. The weather was beautiful, and the parks were half empty - lovely!

Cheers!

Heather, thanks for the info. :thumbsup2 I am kind of bummed because with Easter falling when it does I think we are basically screwed (lol, can I say that?:lmao: ) no matter where we end up. We did HI a couple years ago during this time w/Easter and it was a ZOO. Maybe just low key like AZ and visit parents & friends. LOL - it was no "tot" that spewed at R & C:rotfl: - I could actually handle little kid "spit up"...it was a BIG KID - maybe about 7 or 8!! ugh. We used to always come for 2 wks the end of Jan!! I miss those days. We were absolutely spoiled by the nonexistant crowds. Now that my kids are older, we have to come with the masses during school breaks. At least we've been enough times where we've done it all pretty much and now like to enjoy the pools and other resort offerings. The good thing is the March weather is so gorgeous in FL. From your post, it sounds like I missed some of Lisa's pics....need to go back and check out that Mad Hatter bfast/cake thing.:goodvibes How wonderful that whole VR looked. Like a fairytale dream come true for sure. Heather, your anniv stay is coming up really soon! I can't wait to hear about it and the surprise they have in store for you. :wizard:

Lisa, looks like you're going to have to name that jerky CM. We need to know.

I totally share your concern about megacrowds for Spring Break! :scared1:
We'll be at WDW mid-March, but leaving on March 18 so we'll hopefully avoid a few thousand guests at least...

IMHO, you should go to WDW, even with the Easter crowd & peak pricing because DL is so small with just the park & DCA, while WDW has so much more to see and do...

We're also disappointed at the non-response from the GF GM, and that's why we're giving the Dolphin a try. We'll request a top floor room, or one of the newly renovated rooms, & see what happens. Don't get me wrong, we still think the GF is the best resort at WDW, but we're ready to give another resort a chance...

I bet you'll miss the worst of it.....they'll all be checking in with us around March 21.:guilty: Ya, if we can swing it, we'd really like to go to DLR mid January. We went to DLR for our first ever visit last March (again last wk in March) and had a really fun time - it was super crowded, but we just loved it. We'd really like to go back during a slow time so we can enjoy it more and just take more in detail wise. It was a fast paced fun trip, though!:goodvibes

Lisa....OMG! LOVE the cool colorful cake and all the Alice in Wonderland stuff at the bfast! Kelly needs to see these pics. What a neat thing to do.:goodvibes Where was this held??? LOVE that room & that the characters showed up!!! Wow!!!! OK,...as I look at more of your pics, I keep coming back to add more to this post - INCREDIBLE!!! I cannot believe how that room was decorated!!!!! I am stunned!

Hello! I don't post very often here, but I subscribe to this thread and have gathered so much useful information from you all. Thanks!

I do have a question that I'm hoping one of you GF experts can help me with...

We are staying in the Main Building and have a deluxe room booked. When I made the reservations I requested a Beach View - rooms 4322-4329 or 4422-4429. This was based on recommendations from the UG book. For the deluxe caterory, are these the best rooms to request? I do realize it's just a request, but I'd hate to be asking for something that is more suited to a regular room category and that does not apply to the deluxe one.

Was it a deluxe room for 2 or with two queens??

If it were me (and family) I would request the deluxe room (2 qns) on the 4th floor right near the lounge. I got a peek at this room & thought I'd remember the number but of course forgot - the room is HUGE and love the layout and the lounge is right there for convenience. The view from this room is courtyard. I am not sure where the other 2 qn deluxes are located, though.:confused3 Somebody else will know.

The deluxe honeymoon rooms are either on the 2nd floor (marina/Wishes view) or beautiful turret rooms with differing views.

Happy planning! I can never get lucky and have a deluxe available.

Hi everyone
I have been enjoying reading everyone postings so I decided to join.

Lisa, Love your pictures and THANK YOU for sharing them with us.

Everytime my husband and I go to Disney, we usually stay at the moderate hotel b/c we are at the parks all day and use the room to sleep and shower. It was always a dream for me to stay at the Grand Floridian. He surprised me...Mother's day present to go to Disney world the following week with our 2 year old son.

Question... are there any rooms in the Sago that does not have connecting room?
Thanks
:dance3: :cool1:

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted about their cabana experiences. My TA was finally able to book one for us after 6 phone calls and 24 hours, she finally got a hold of someone who knew that yes you can still book a cabana even if you are not a concierge guest.

I would have given up long ago if I hadn't learned from these boards that it could be done.

Thanks! :flower3:

We have the 2 queen beds booked. Do you remember if that room would have a castle view? Or for that matter, do any of the RPC deluxe rooms have a castle view?
Thanks for the info! And thanks also for posting your pictures of the Roy Suite. I've never seen those anywhere, what a fabulous room! Did you have a standard room booked before the upgrade? I would have a very hard time staying in any other room after that one!

Wow! I go away to pick the kids up from zoo camp and it looks like you've all been busy. Meanwhile, I emailed the pix link to my actual family and only 3 of them have viewed them:confused3

OK, I'll try to answer everything I can.

First off, the cm's name. He's been there for a while, I remember him being kind of "attitudy" (my new word). Of course, in my post vow renewal almost 40 brain, I cannot remember the name but he's from Independence MO. Those of you regulars will no doubt know who he is.

Yes, I will definitely let the higher ups know. I'm sorry no one else was able to be "enticed" back. I'm sure the manager, Beth saw what a wreck I was about the whole thing and wanted to make it better. Good for her!

I just called the number on my sheet and spoke with a very nice and friendly cm who has us booked for our 2 nights on Dec 30/31st. Figured if I'm going to give them another chance, why not for New Years?! He said the Grand is amazing with bars in the lobby, a balloon drop and the band in the lobby. Sounds fun. Hopefully it will all work out. We used to go earlier in Dec but with 2 out of 3 in school full time....

Lives4disney---since we received the ap's for doing the vow renewal we will probably go for a couple of days at Easter too. We actually stayed at the Poly the night before Easter in 2006 and hit all four theme parks on Easter day with the three kids!! Crazy!

OK, The band was excellent! Her website is www.davondasimmons.com. She plays around the Orlando area and was awesome. Much more than the original quote for a "jazz trio" but worth it!

Our reception was in the Whitehall Room and patio. It is the patio at the Grand's convention center that you can see from the monorail. There are nice pix and 360's on the www.disneymeetings.com website. I liked that the room was more unique than a regular ballroom and didn't need much decorating. Lots of people use it for Mad Hatters or cocktail parties. It worked out well b/c the kids could run around outside too.

The carriage was AMAZING!!! Yes, it costs about a mortgage payment for a few short moments, but time stands still. I'm sure I am in so many people's vacation pix b/c they pick you up at the side of the Grand and then pass by the front so everyone sees you. Little girls were going nuts! It was, however, like being under a magnifying glass under the July Florida sun but I wouldn't trade it for the world!

No, our family is not like us when it comes to Disney. I have to avoid telling them when Im planning another trip b/c they never understood. On this trip we had 16 adults and 11 kids---none of my nieces and nephews had been and most of the parents had never been either. That's why I really wanted to show them a great time. No one could understand why we need to go for more than 2 days and why so often. I think they now get it. Of course, they'll never love it like I do and that's ok, but at least I won't be quite as embarrased to tell them when we're planning another trip.

The fireworks were a private Illuminations party at the Lower UK pavilion at Epcot. Anyone can actually book this. The view was amazing and I love the pictures we were able to get.

Oh, for anyone looking for pix of the new rooms. Over on the weddings board JJClemson has some on her wedding trip report...Jen and Jeff's wedding. They had problems too and Joe helped them out. I do like the new flatscreens but the rooms don't have near the charm they used to. The cm I spoke with about our next stay said they had too many conventioneers not liking all the floral. Man, I was upset enough when they got rid of the adorable Alice toilitries. good thing I just won an Alice comforter on ebay. Maybe I'll try for the Mr Toad one too so my 2 yo can change out her "big girl" bed!

any other questions, just ask. I'll try to answer quickly as I can.:) Lisa
