Don't let the ending kill it for you. Trust me, every little plot twist and character has a meaning and purpose. Everything resolves itself within the course of the next two books.
Trust me, I wouldn't say anything like these about books if I didn't mean it. No one was more shocked by the ending than I was.
I just couldn't stand him sitting there telling Clary "don't" when she was trying to expose Valentine and snap Jace out of being so supportive of Valentine in the big end scene. Supposedly Valentine had convinced Jace to go along with his plot??? Give me a break. So what if he wanted a "father" in his life. It wouldn't have made him change his entire perspective on right vs wrong.
They were both there when Blackwell and Penblog (I know those aren't the right names but you'll remember who I'm talking about) were talking to Luke and saying that Valentine would trade the cup for Jocelyn. Jace knew that Valentine didn't care about Jocelyn and that he was ruthless. no matter what lies Valentine would have told Jace .... Jace would have had to be under a spell to have even SLIGHTLY forgotten all that he knew to the contrary. The whole "oh it was a misunderstanding" was so annoyingly obviously intended to make sure there was an out for Valentine and a way to clear the path for book 2. Blech.
And the idea that people who don't lie (Jace) and who are supposed to abide by a strict code to continually hold back information (the fact that Hodge betrayed the kids and gave up the cup) so that there can be a big blow out later and create a new "distrusting" relationship... blech. I don't know.. the whole thing just stung me. Ya know? It felt very contrived....
The brother/sister relationship was only second in my list of grievances but it was HUGE as well! LOL
I really liked the story before that though.. a lot of action right away! I like that.
