The MKFan familys Dec Trip
The cast:
MKFan-PR: Me, 35, Disney maniac since my first trip way back when I was 5. This was my 11th trip, the 7th with my DW, the 3rd with our DD. I love planning, but Im no commando. I go to WDW to relax.
DW, 39. This is her 8th trip total. We really enjoy being here. And she loves the fact that shes becoming an expert.
DD, 4. Well call her Non-Stop, since she literally was during the trip. This is actually her 3rd trip, but it will also be her most memorable, since she was 9 months and 3.5 YO on her two previous ones.
Ive been sweating out this trip since April: looking at air fare, rental car rates, room rates, etc. We had 3 different dates until we settled on Nov. 28 to Dec. 6. Got great deals on everything, and managed to snatch an AP rate for a Garden View at the Poly, with an added night at AS-Sp. Since we live in Puerto Rico, a WDW is a major project and expense for us, so we try to enjoy each trip as much as we can.
Well, enough with this stuff, lets begin:
Day 1 Nov 28: The one where we arrive and never get to rest
Yesterday was Thanksgiving. We left home early to visit my family and DWs family, and to drop off our dog with DWs family which will take care of it while were gone. We end up at home at about 9 PM, which is way later than we wanted. Theres still a lot to do. We finish up packing and everything else. Thankfully, Non-Stop went to sleep quickly at about 10 PM. DW falls at about midnight. Thats not so bad, except that our flight leaves at 8:45 AM which means we have to be at the airport at about 6:30 or 6:45 which means oh, Ill skip the whole reasoning part and tell you that we had to get up at about 3:15 AM!
To make things, well interesting, we feel that Non-Stop is a little hot. We check her temperature and she has a little fever.
Perfect timing! Since the friend that will drive us to the airport is a Pediatrician, well tell him to examine her once we get to his house.
Best case scenario: just a small infection prescription for anti-biotics all is cool. Please, Lord Please!!! Worst-case: well I dont want to think about that. Last year she had a virus that knocked her down for over two weeks, complete with a stay at the hospital. We watched helplessly as our little Energizer bunny was left subdued an quiet by the virus. Id gladly sacrifice the trip if we dont have to go through that again.
I finally crash at about 1 AM. Since Im the one who must wake everybody, I fear Ill sleep right through and not wake up on time, so I just move to the sofa, and sleep with the lights and TV on.
Stop looking at me weird I do whatever it takes to wake up on time!
At 3:30 DW and me are up, and start to get dressed. We check Non-Stops temperature its a little higher. While half asleep, we give her a little Childrens Tylenol, then we let her sleep. Well change her at our friends house, so that she can sleep as much as she can. Once she wakes up well know how sick she is: if shes still happy and filled with energy, shell be ok. If not, well
Positive thoughts! Pray! Pray!
Were on the road at about 4:45 AM. We live in a town called Morovis, which is about an hour from San Juan, the capital (and the airport). We get to our friends house, which is just a few minutes from the airport, at about 5:45 AM. Hes expecting us by 6:00, so we wait a little before calling him.
Then Non-Stop awakes
we look at her
she looks at us
we ask how do you feel?
she says good then she realizes shes not home, her eyes light up and says Are we at the airport? Are we going on the plane? Mommy, my clothes, change me!
Looks like well be fine.
Once its 6 and Non-Stop has changed, we go inside our friends house, where he examines her
And after the Open your mouth say Aaaaah part, he says:
Its just a little infection Ill prescribe you some anti-biotics for you to get when you arrive. Shes fine
Yes Baby! Thank you, God!
We arrive at the airport with plenty of time. I do the self-service check-in at Song (really cool!), we take our bags to security, and were ready in no time. We go to McDonalds for breakfast, especially for DWs coffee. She REALLY needs her coffee in the mornings. If she doesnt get it by 10:30 or 11, shell get a headache, and shell become Mrs. Evil Crab for the rest of the day.
Were flying on Song, flt 2484, from SJU to MCO. They started to fly from SJU this year, around Feb. With their prices, I was eager to try them.
Boarding is a breeze. The plane is comfy, with good legroom. The talent were really nice and easygoing. There was food for $ale. I was aware of the costs, since they publish it on their site. Non-Stop and I share a ham and cheese, while DW tries to sleep a little. DW does not like to fly, although I dont think she would use the word hate. She basically puts up with it.
The flight is smooth and were in MCO in no time. Its a one-hour difference from home (were in AST, but without daylight savings time; so for six months were the same as EST, and for six months were an hour ahead), so were in MCO at about 10:30 AM. We gained one hour!
We enter the terminal, stop, take a deep breath Ahhhhh, yes, the sweet aroma of vacation
Since DW loves traditions, DW and Non-Stop have to comply with ours once we set foot on MCO, they must, without delay enter the ladies restroom
Once the ladies are done with the formalities, we board the airport monorail (Love that voice!, Never get tired of it!) to the terminal, where we get our bags rather quickly. We then went to the elevators to go down to the Rental car counters, where I braced myself for the mess that Alamo could be
Surprise! Just one guy on the line!
Everything is ready. They try to get me to take an SUV for about $8 more per day. It would have been nice, but since our budget is set and since a sub-compact is more than enough for all of us, I decline. (It would have been about $64, plus tax. Id rather spend that on a nice meal than on a car).
We then exit to the car aisles, and we brace for the chill. You have to remember, we come from the Caribbean. Anything below 75 is cold to us. As we exit we feel nothing!
The weather is perfect! Not hot, not cold. Like I said, perfect!
Wow, this is gonna be great!
When we get to the aisles, there are no sub-compacts, but no problem. We get a nice, Navy-Blue Cavalier. Non-Stop is beaming! We are now on our way!
When we arrive at Orlando, we never take the new road (417). It is very pretty, but I prefer taking the other way. Its corny, but it makes me feel Im on vacation, seeing all the hotels and the signs.
After a while, we drive up to the All-Star Sports, where well stay this first day. Tomorrow, we move to the Poly.
The line is long for check-in, but everybody seems to be in a good mood. Im worried that our room will not be ready. We are excited, but we are also groggy from the little sleep we had. If the room is going to be ready after 3 Ill figure well just crash on a lounge chair or in the Food Court!
Im relieved when I hear those magic words your room is ready. Yes, baby! This is going good! Room was #5132. When I saw the location (Center Court, building 5, at the back of the resort), I thought we would be far. Wrong! It was a great location. We were right beside the parking lot, on the first floor (where the landscaping blocked the parking view), in a corner, just a few minutes from the Main Building through Surfs Up.
After we get a bite to eat at the Food Court (the chicken quesadilla was great!), we go in the room, I haul all our stuff from the car. Non-Stop and DW suddenly are excited and filled with energy, and with the perfect weather decide to go to the pool. I leave them there, while I head to the bus stop to go to Epcot to pick DWs pass and my AP, which are on will-call. Once I have my AP, I feel tempted to go in and try Mission:Space, but I still have A LOT to do.
I get back to the room, make sure the ladies are alright and to leave them some $$, for $nacks. Non-Stop is Ok, her fever is down, but I still have to get the anti-biotics. I get them from the Kissimmee Wal-Mart, along with a second disposable camera for Non-Stop to get her own pictures. By the time Im back in the room I need a rest! After a short nap, the ladies come in the room. Non-Stop is so excited, she wants to see some characters Please, daddy can we see Mickey now?. Today was not a park day, and its already 7 PM. What to do? Chef Mickeys!
We drive over to the CR, where we venture to Chef Mickeys without a PS
. No problem, just a 45 minute wait. They give us what looks like a mini-UFO from a bad 50s Sci-Fi movie and we browse around the shops. After about 20 minutes the UFO starts vibrating, the lights start dancing and it starts talking! Apparently the aliens were telling us that we had a table ready, or something.
We start to enjoy our meal. Chef Mickeys has some of the best food Ive seen in a buffet. Everything was great. The characters were very nice, we did our napkin-twirling and generally had a great time. Non-Stop started feeling tired, and the medicine was giving her stomach cramps (and a little diarrhea later, but it was just side effects, and she was fine the next day). We then headed to our room, where we settled for the night.
Great first day, but we are BEAT.
RHETORICAL QUESTIONS:
-Why is it that you cant sleep when youre either very worried or very excited about something the following day?
-Why do Car Rental companies always try to get you to add something else to your reservation?
-Why does almost everything in Orlando end in World (SeaWorld, GatorWorld, T-Shirt World)?
-Why does my heart always skip a beat when I see the WDW entrance sign?
Tomorrow Day 2 The one where we enroll in the Monorail frequent traveler plan
Stay Tuned!
