The Maelstromers... a FASTPASS! Part 2

Ah, the kids are finally in bed, and I get to enjoy a little bit of relative peace and quiet (old kitty and new kitty are still hissing at each other quite a bit, so, as I say, the peace and quiet is relative). Long day at the ranch -- rained pretty much all day, which meant of course, the kids were on me like white on rice all day, whilst their mother enjoyed a lovely day on the beaches of San Diego. I swear, I'm going to call the hotel where she's staying and get her a wake-up call for 3:00 a.m. I mean, you know you've gone 'round the bend when you tell your 6-year old daughter, without a trace of irony in your voice, that if she can't sit still and play Princess Monopoly seriously, she's going to be expelled from the game. It was at that point that I began to look longingly at the Tanquerey bottle.

PolyJennJenn -- your story about the woman with the fake, ahem, assets, reminded me of that Seinfeld episode where Jerry sends Elaine into the women's locker room to see if the girl he is dating is artificially endowed -- "they're real, and they're fantastic". You should've pushed her in a pool and see if she floated ....

Bad Kitty -- ah yes, loved Bloom County and Calvin & Hobbes and the Far Side. Nothing in the paper today really compares.

P Pooh -- read the above about my day and count yourself exceedingly lucky.

Zzub -- yeah, I get slapped a lot. Have no idea why. Perhaps it's my sunny personality .... :lmao:

JW -- yeah, but can you explain the whole "Love Story" thing?

Everyone else --

chappiechapchap!!

You'd win even if they were A-cups Jenn. It's not the size of the melons, but the size of the heart behind them that counts. And that heart is a definite Double-D.

I'd expect Ed to show up around now.

I guess he doesn't like to CHAT with us, huh? We don't talk about Melons like PolyMelonMom.

No he didn't "invent" the internet and he never actually claimed to "invent" the internet. What he did say was "I took the initiative in creating the Internet." (This was in an interview with Wolf Blitzer in 1999). Considering he is a politician I guess you could make a claim that this was kinda true since he was a supporter of funding for high speed computing and networking in the late 80's and the term "internet" really didn't come into use until the 90's. The actual beginnings of what became the internet is generally considered to be ARPAnet which started in 1969. ARPAnet was to support military research by Universities and was expanded under the auspices of the National Science Foundation in the late 80's and the 90's.

So I guess you can also make the case that the Russians were responsible for the creation of the internet ;)

Hey, I was going to say that. So who invented e-mail and what was the first e-mail message, know that one? The second?

Is this what you were looking for? :)

Richard W. Watson, for example, thought of a way to deliver messages and files to printers at remote sites. He filed his "Mail Box Protocol" as a draft standard under RFC 196, but the protocol was never implemented. In hindsight and given today's problems with junk email (and junk faxes before that), that's probably not all that bad.

Another person interested in sending messages between computers was Ray Tomlinson. SNDMSG, a program that can deliver messages to another person on the same computer had been around for about ten years already. It delivered these messages by appending to a file owned by the user you wanted to reach. To read the message, they would simply read the file.
SENDMSG CPYNET = EMAIL

Incidentally, Tomlinson was working in a group at BBN Technologies that developed an experimental file transfer program called "CPYNET". CPYNET could write and read files on a remote computer.

"Why not deliver text to a SENDMSG mailbox with CPYNET?" Tomlinson probably thought, and made CPYNET append to files (instead of replacing them). He then merged its functionality with that of SENDMSG so that it could send messages to remote machines. The first email program was born.
The Very First Network Email Messages

After a few test messages (containing the timeless words "QUERTYIOP" and maybe "ASDFGHJK"), Ray Tomlinson was satisfied enough with his invention to show it off to the rest of the group.

Delivering a display of how form and content are inseparable, the first "real" email, sent in late 1971, announced its own existence (the exact words have been forgotten, unfortunately). It also included instructions how to use the '@' character in email addresses.

2Infinity: Thanks for the barf bags. I ordered a gross to keep at my desk for whenever I read LaLa's musings. It's not just her trip reports anymore. Now she's posting links to putrescent dancing mini-Michaels. I've long since past throwing up in my mouth a little. I've moved on to full-on projectile hurling. Thanks, LaLa. HY/MI.

Hey look everybody, I found a picture of ZZUB as a kid. Betcha can't pick him out of a crowd. Yeah, apparently he had a weak stomach back then too.

Quick. Somebody get him a fanny pack. Or a barf bag. ;)

Hey folks - Rhonda and Wesley made it home safe! They did get to meet SNAP - though I'm going to wait on her to make sure it's okay before I post that pic. Thought I'd share these 2 from their trip. These are from the meet and greet they had with Princes Aurora and Prince Phillip.

This one is him dancing with her...

I'll have another one in a minute maybe...

Blessings!
