hahaha Maxbon..... I know who you are, and I think the rest of us do too

Maxbon!!!
I am so glad you joined us. We left a few hints last week to come and bark at us a while, but your meany master (or are you his?) said you were only allowed to lurk.

Jennalicious will be especially glad you've come! Woof, woof!

And I like your tags!

Thanks to everybody who's helping me out with the router problem - so, in no particular order, I'll try to answer:

Yes, I just came upstairs and am on the laptop right next to the router, adn I have "Excellent" signal strength. I never get anything better than "Very good" downstairs, and it's usually just "Low." I don't think there are any other cards I can see in my laptop, and there's only one slot to insert a wireless card into, so I'm not sure about removing other things, but I have tried removing and reinserting the wireless card, adn it doesn't seem to have any effect.

I've noticed it works better in one part of my living room vs. another - where it works better is directly below the room in which the router is located. And yes, we have 2.4GHZ cordless phones - I think 3 of them. Can they affect my signal?

Anyway, someone (I'm sorry, I don't remember who) said something about a repeater. I have no idea what that is, but if it'll increase my signal strength downstairs I'm all for it - can I just find it on the best buy website, probably?

The first thing to try is to change the orientation of the antenna on the router, if it is currently vertical try turning it horizontal and then see if that improves the signal strength downstairs. Also try changing the location of the router (I know you will not be able to move it very far since it probably has a short ethernet cable connecting it to the modem). And make sure the router is not close to any flouresent fixtures.

The cordless phones can potentially interfere with the wireless network since they both use 2.4GHz but you would notice that if you only lost the connection when a phone was in use. If there is any interference you can change channels on the wireless network (or on the phones) to minimize or eliminate the interference.

As Chappie said a repeater is also an option if nothing else improves the signal strength but it would be best to get one from the same manufacturer as your router. If you can tell us the make and model of your router we can tell you which would be the best repeater.

Since we are being all technical here, can I ask a question (well I am going to ask anyway) We are probably going to go wireless with our laptops...will us using them at the same time interfere with each others internet, like websites and such.

Thanks so much for helping me out. A few minutes after first installing the router and card on Friday, we did end up turning the router around, so the antenna wasn't in the back against the back wall of the computer desk, so now the antenna points more towards the front, and thus more towards the rest of the house as well. I've tried putting the antenna up or horizontal, that doesn't seem to make much difference.

Right now I have a "Very Good" signal strenght in the part of the living room where it usually waffles b/w low and good. So that's part of my frustration - I can't seem to pin down when or why it works or doesn't. So I'm guessing a repeater would be the best option.

The router is a Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless Router, Model #: WGR614. The wireless card is a Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless PC Card, Model #: WG511.

If you think there's a better brand of router and card out there, I think I could take these back and exchange them. But otherwise, if you know what type of repeater I should get, I would so much appreciate your help. Thanks, jw! :cool1:

Hey I got one of my tags by being taken for a ride to get "tutored".

Heck, I've been fixed. Half of my parts have been replaced and the other half don't work. Can't I get a stinking tag for that :lmao:

You'll be fine. Most wireless routers broadcast at 54Mbps. Most residential highspeed in the U.S. achieves only 3 Mbps as a top speed (unless you have a T1 or T2 line), so you'll have plenty of bandwidth. One interesting point: I have a brother who lives in Japan, and just upgraded his highspeed, that now runs at something like 32 Mbps. Yikes, that's smokin' fast. I take it you're not planning on networking your laptops together though, right? 'Cause if you do that, unless you password protect your private info, anybody on the network will be able to see what's in your hard drive (wow, that sounds totally rude when read out of context, doesn't it?)

JW - thanks for being an inquiring mind about my laptop. I got some duct tape, an ace bandage, and some Bactine and it seems to be OK now. I really need to replace it before it leaves me in serious trouble. All seems to be well again.

And BTW, I guess I fit the description of a designer dog so I know someone who is going to be in a real fowl mood because he told me to come out of lurkdom and post for all of his friends here. :snooty:

Maxbon, if EVER I were to spend real money on a dog, it would be a Bernese. You rock, dog!

We are wireless, and it a common scene for me, dh, and our babysitter to all be on the couch with our laptops, surfing at the same time.
There's never been any problems with interference or anything.

Hi friends! After days and days of lurking while working at other projects, I'm back. I think I'm caught up on the maelstrom of topics here. Thank you for entertaining me in a side window while I worked on other things.

I am so envious of your Maelstrom meet! I appreciate you including me on the traveling Mickeypants. I will be a good steward.

I'm trying to work on my neglected trip report today so I'll check in with you vikings later. I'm off to a few meetings (that makes me sound important...i'm not..at all) and carting children around.

You all are hysterical! I love it! Oh, and whoever said they had a crush on Grammy cannot have her. She's MINE. Not in the Mel+zzuB way. She's just my best friend and can't be yours. She's going to teach me how to buy and use a laptop, right?

hooP and Paslea-Pooh: I can't forget to tell you how much I love your story, signature, spice shop and subsequent banter here. Thanks!

Sheridac, I have found the 2.5 pounds you have lost. Come pick them up anytime. Somebody motivate me to stop eating. Please.

Horsefriendomine have a great trip wherever this one is taking you. Not Hawaii yet is it? OH, is it DC? Well, have fun and be safe.

Mark, Rhonda, and Amy I love that you met, especially at church!! That's terrific.

Jen PMM I am sooo missing my cozy setup at the Poly. Kiss the ground for me. I could cry. I'm homesick.

The rest of you, happy day!! Thanks for making me giggle at the spice cabinet!

Later,
Real name...Jami (rhymes w/ Tammy not Amy)

Hi Maelstromers!!!!! Howdy!

Well... looky here. I take off for a couple of days and I come back to a TAG. Wow. It looks like around here I get rewarded for NOT posting. Heh, heh. Geez. Maybe that's not so funny after all? But, anyhow, it's a special little tag isn't it? Yep. One that I'm sure my Mother would be proud of. I'm not sure it's better than "I like soup". However... I'm sure no one else has the same one. I think. It's looks like the Tag Fairy has gone a little mad around here... tagging Maelstromers left and right. I think Snap has two tags now. Whew. I'm also pretty sure Lil' Grumpy is the Tag Fairy. Or else he tore a strip off the Tag Fairy and that's how I got tagged. Yep. We both posted to the thread "Does this bother you?" and BINGO I got tagged. Thanks Lil' Grumpy. Your post there was superb. I thought some of your finest work. Yet. And I really liked your sentiments. SQUEAK SQUEAKER, my friend.

I really appreciate that picture of Grammy that got reposted. Thanks. Wow. Grammy!!!! You sure don't look much like any GRAMMY I know. You're gorgeous. You are "Hair-optional". Not a lot of women can claim THAT. Anyhow... it seems there is someone who (pronounced "hooP") wouldn't mind seeing that tatoo of which you speak. Perhaps you'll post it now. Have a sniff of nutmeg and think about it. And huge props to you for shaving it for a great cause. Your head not your tatoo. Cheers!!!!!

Horsegirliegirliegoo ~ Geez. What you said made me feel really good, today. Thanks, bud!!!!! Have a great trip and I'll miss you. But then I'll be gone when you're back so... I'll see you way down the road. Somewhere. Sometime. sob. (This is SO Casablanca. Bletch.)...

Bliss ~ For the LOVE OF GOD... post already. Geez. You're 3 for 3 on this thread. You're STILL 100 % a Maelstromer. Have you figured out those technical difficulties yet? If not there are apparently PLENTY of guys on this thread that could help you out. Yes... I am smelling the sweet scent of GEEK, today. Heh, heh. Anyhow. Come and play with us. No need to be scared. I don't bite. And neither does JW. Apparently. Actually, the only one you have to be scared of around here is a hit and run poster named ZZUB or ZZUBie (for short). He's mean. And he's also a bulimic supermodel or the lead singer in a boy band. We think. He hasn't been around for days. But sometimes I refer to him. Just now and again. Anyhow... I thought maybe I would PM you the correct editing procedures but I thought that might throw you for too much of a loop. Anyhow. It's TIME. To post. Go for it.

GeorgiaAmy ~ You got to see the Marky Mark Mark and Rhonda! Wow. That's great. And he said "Maelstrom"!!!! Too funny.

Alrighty... I'm off to PM that new guy named Maxbon.

See, now there's a quote that, taken completely out of context, is way worse than mine about the hard drive. Thanks Kim -- well done. :lmao: :lmao:
