The Fleecing of Americans at WDW

1 USD = 1.00000 = Euro 0.74326 = Pound 0.50205

Here's the rate as of today.

those are simply the current exchange rates. If a room is $300, someone from the UK still pays $300, although it will be converted into GBP on their credit card statement.

You've missed my point which is Americans are not filling up the deluxe resorts, international visitors are. For example, the British receive 50% off rack rates simply based on the exchange rate. This is before any discounts or free dining incentives.

Well, all I can say is I spent a week split between WL and AKL in early June (a time when no AP or GP discounts were offered). I'm an American and there were plenty of Americans (or at least American accents) surrounding me at both resorts. It sure didn't seem to me that international visitors were filling up those deluxe resorts when I was there.

And really, so what if they were? Business and exchange rates go through cycles all the time. WDW is booming and I doubt very seriously if company management cares where their customers come from, as long as they keep coming.

Which means it's 50% off.

Gasoline today in South Jersey was $2.41 !!!!
Wonder how they did that

$2.41? WOW. It's still $2.66 or so here in Kentucky.

I think the Trilateral Commission, which of course controls both Disney prices and all gasoline prices, is giving New Jerseyans a break, and it's being breaking the backs of us poor Kentuckians.

It's a fleecing alright!

It doesn't work that way.

But I fear that this discussion is not a good use of my time, based on the posts so far in this thread.

I know that the concept of foreign exchange can be difficult for some to understand, but you have far oversimplified the argument by simply posting exchange rates and saying that 'it is 50% off'

Best of luck, and enjoy your third deluxe vacation trip of the year. :)

As bavaria said, I think we're on two totally different pages here...

Do you think that just because 1GBP=2USD at the present time that if I pay in pounds I basically get "half off" my room??

Troll Alert!!!!

IGNORE the "UGLY AMERICAN"

Which means it's 50% off.

No it doesn't.

The pound, and most other foreign currency, is very strong against the US dollar currently. That's a great thing if you are visiting the US from other countries.

But the "rest of the story" that you're not considering is that people in Britain probably do not make as much in pounds as they might if the exchange rate were more even, since a pound goes further than our dollar does. So while $300 may come out to something like only 150 GBP on their credit cards, they may only have disposable income equivalent to that 150 GBP, while an American with the same income (but in US dollars) might have disposable income equivalent to the original $300 amount.

Anyway, this has nothing whatsoever to do with Disney pricing. It's going to be the same whether you buy gasoline, shoes, airfare or anything in America with foreign currency.

Lol- that is only because everything in our country is double the price! Right now, with our fabulous exchange rate we pay $11 for 20 cigarettes and $9 a gallon of gas So half that- if £1=$1, then we would still be paying $5.50 for 20 cigarettes and $4.50 a gallon of gas! So no, not only are we not getting the prices you claim we are, we are still paying more.

If we get 50% off everything in Disney (and as some said America), how do you explain that we are still paying more than you regardless of the exchange rate? So when you pay $300 a room= £150, doesn't mean we get it cheap. That £150 we are paying for the room is a lot more (proportionately) of what the Brits earn that the $300 you pay for the room. It is about global economy as a whole- not an exchange rate!

The discussion is not about me, please stop attempting to make it so. The original point was that Disney is overcharging for what they offer! It's a shame for the future children who won't be so fortunate in visiting Disney during holiday periods when they're off from school.

Methinks you are right. But it was fun to shoot down bogus economics arguments!

Yes, but Prejudice is hard to change over the message boards.

(My personal fav of this is the "fleecing" of America. Hmm... Did I miss something? Is there some type of LAW that MAKES you pay money to Disney??? :rotfl2: )

I know. I have suffered unspeakable trauma from having to visit Disney World during October. If I sue Disney, do you think they would reimburse me for my therapy???

When did a trip to Disney World become a right? Something every child has to do or else suffer unspeakable horrors?:confused3

Answer: It is NOT a right to go to Disney. Just like a trip to anywhere, you only go if you can afford to.

I have decided to violate my own rule and I will probably get the "nasty gram" from the mods, but......

This is about you. Look in the mirror. Know what looks back. AN UGLY AMERICAN. It's attitudes like yours that give our citizens a black eye all over the world.

The name VILLAN fits, there are lots of other things I can think of however.

With this type of attitude you don't deserve any Disney Magic so it's hard to feel sorry for you.

Please crawl back in your hole and STAY THERE!!!!!

"Overcharging for what they offer" is your opinion. Expect others to have other opinions.

Staying onsite for what everyone in the world would consider a reasonable price is not a God-given right for guests, regardless of national origin. We all have the right to stay offsite if we don't like the onsite rates. Disney is NOT a charity!

"An item is worth only what a willing buyer will pay." As long as WDW doesn't have any problem filling their resorts, they can charge what they like. Simple supply and demand. Don't like it? Buy DVC! :lmao: (tell 'em I sent you...)

ETA: having grown up in Germany when the dollar was VERY much in our favor, I never heard the Germans whining about us spending our money with them. Exchange rates do NOT equal "discounts".
