The Fishy Bagel Debate

Do you put lox on your bagels?

  • Yes! It's great!

  • No way! No fishy bagels for me!

Yes, I have heard of lox on bagels. My typical order at Gibs NY bagels, here in Colorado, is a seasame bagel, cream cheese, with lox, red onions and capers. I pity the close talkers who talk to me after eating it...

Geez Louise...

you forgot to add in an option in the poll for those who may try it/other.

I have not tried lox yet.

Have I heard of bagels & lox?

%$#%, yeah.

Do I like it? Sure do. Grew up on it... in NJ.

NB, if you hit a bagel store in Bergen County, you'll find it. Lots of kosher bagel places there.

(I don't know how it became a Jewish thing. I guarantee you it's found nowhere in the Talmud.)

My favorite breakfast to pick up on the way to work: toasted garlic bagel with cream cheese & lox.

I make yummy sounds the whole car ride on the Deegan Expressway.

I like fish and eat a lot of it. I also enjoy bagels. I don't, however, enjoy them together.

Lox are ok, but NY Style bagels have nothing on Montreal style bagels. Says the Canadian girl.
Mmmm with warm cream cheese. Ok now Im hungry ;)

LOVE lox and cream cheese bagels! Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I love the lox cream cheese spread where it's all mixed together... 'cause I'm lazy.

I'm really more of a fishstick eater - and less of a fish connoisseur, so salmon is the last fish I want near me......or my bagel.

Agreed! :thumbsup2 (although we call them fish-fingers here)

Hi everyone, my first post on the podcast boards! :yay: I normally lurk around. You guys all seem so nice here :)
Debbie

Welcome Debbie!

I had to look up what Lox is, we just call it smoked salmon in the UK! I don't like both salmon and cream cheese, so apart from the bagel its all gross!

I have definitely heard of bagels and lox and love them both together with onion. However, I don't like capers and avoid them at all cost. I usually push them off my plate, so that when it's picked up, there is a little ring of capers on the table.

Me either-I keep my bagels and fish (and capers) separate, thank you. I grew up in NJ and am very familiar with the bagel and fish combo, but it's not something I've ever done or will do.

No fish on pizza either....YUCK.

Bagels and Lox are a certainty on the holidays and at special occasions. But my personal taste, I'd rather have a nice tuna fish salad on a lightly toasted sesame seed bagel, thank you very much.

There seems to be some confusion on Miss Nikki's part.

The conversation started when Nikki announced that "she had never heard of putting fish on bagels" and that "no one in NJ eats bagels and lox".

So in order for the poll to be an accurate representation of the conversation held in Chat....the poll should read HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF BAGELS AND LOX.

I know many, many people that dont care for it and that is certainly understandable.

You could wrap grapfruit in chocolate and $20 bills and I'm still not eating it.

But...please first let Nikki know whether you have ever HEARD of bagels and lox and then let her know if you actually like it.

What if the 20s were just used as a wrapper and you were allowed to take them off?

If you go to your local supermarket and go to the cream cheese section you will find cream cheese with salmon blended in.

It's not as good as just layering lox on a bagel but it has a longer shelf life and a bit more convenient.

Also Mickeys Breakfast buffet and the contemporary has Lox and Bagels on the buffet.

I don't like fish at all anyway, but my mom love bagels & lox. We live in NJ. One of my close friends lives in north Jersey, and she LOVES it. I just like butter. ;)

I was just looking at the Delish menus and pictures and can't wait to get some bagels on our next trip down in April. We have awful bagels down here in Southern NJ.

I'm in South Jersey, and we have a great bagel place 5 minutes away from us. I actually just had one this morning. :)

Now that's where I'd prep a tuna melt in my toaster oven. I'd put some tuna salad on a bagel and put a slice of American cheese on it until it melted over the top. Yum.

Not to change the subject, but you ever heard of an LEO?

Lox + eggs + onion

Great breakfast treat - on a bagel or straight up.

Ah, the tuna melt bagel. I personally prefer mozarella. The pizza place near me makes a mean tuna melt bagel in the brick oven.

I used to make grilled cheese and tuna salad sandwiches. Haven't had one in a long time. I haven't bought sliced sandwich bread in a long time!
