JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says a new Florida law is now in effect, and drivers who hide or alter their license plates could face criminal charges.

Florida now considers it a second-degree misdemeanor to cover, tint, obscure, or alter a license plate in any way.

They will handle out of state the same as they do in state- if they see it and they want to snag you’re gonna get caught.

A quick google search says basically all states have laws like this against tinting or obscuring plates so it shouldn’t be a big deal for anyone anyway…

I know two people in Upstate NY who got pulled over for plastic plate covers. One is a woman I worked with for a yellow tinted cover a couple of years ago and the second is my son who had a clear plastic cover just two weeks ago.

I think most driver's realize that attempting to obscure your license plate is probably illegal regardless of where you live.

Tinted tag covers look really cool, and Amazon will sell them to you, but they are pretty much illegal in every state. Even clear tag covers are illegal if the laws are strictly enforced. Anything that can obscure the tag is illegal. There are no exceptions to traffic laws or vehicle equipment laws for out of state residents. If you drive in Florida, you have to play by Florida rules.

Define alter. Georgia gives you will stickers every year when you renew your tags. Technically, scrapping off and applying the new sticker is altering. Just saying.
