poll coming.

If you were buying a home, how important would having a fireplace be?

Until I get lucky enough to move to Florida someday, living where it gets really cold a fireplace is a MUST HAVE.

IMO a fireplace is the only thing that makes winter tolerable!

I wouldn't mind having one but it's no where near the top of my list of things I want. One of my biggest problems with them is that they sit right in the center of where you would normally put a big screen TV. :rotfl2:

It's a "Must have." There's nothing nicer than a warm fire in the fireplace and a big picture window while watching it snow outside.

I would prefer one, but it's not a MUST HAVE. My home now doesn't have one, but it would be nice if it did!

100%, absolutely, positively TRUE.

We have lived in our home seven years. We have used our fireplace TWO times.... and if it weren't there I could set up my home theater in the family room instead of the basement.

both the homes I have ever lived in had at least one. Our old drafty home made our coal stove a must. We had two fireplaces but only used one.
When we built our new home which we have had for 4 years, we had a gas fireplace put in. I was tired of the coal dust. I like them but don't have to have one.

I would prefer to have one. However, if everything else about the house was perfect, the lack of a fireplace would not stop me from buying it.

I picked "I would prefer to have one" because we have a wood fireplace in this house and I love it (the smell of a wood fire is so homey and comforting) ~ but in our last house there was a gas fireplace and I NEVER want another one of those...I hated the look of it (so obviously fake it was tacky to me), it was always having switch problems and it was just a pain, lol. Disclaimer:I know lots of people like them, that's just my opinion and we may have just had a bad one ;)

When we look for a new house, I'd be thrilled if we found one with a wood fireplace but it would not make or break my decision.

We actually designed a home and requested that it not have a fireplace-we just don't like them...Our old home had one and we never used it, and it was one of those gas ones that you just flip a switch and they are on...we would look at it and say look at all that wasted wall space.

A fireplace with gas logs is a MUST HAVE for me. They are virtually in nearly every old and new home in this area. If one is missing, I move on to the next house.

Fireplaces, yuck!

They take extra cleaning/maintenance, they take up a wall and huge portion of the room (can't put anything near one because of the heat they give off), they actually make the house colder instead of warmer, and they pose an extra vulnerability for fire and infestation.

I might put up with one if I really liked the house, but I certainly wouldn't go looking for one.

I agree! We have one and don't use it very often, but I often think that we'd have so many more options for the layout of the room without it! (And we could have fit a bigger tv in the room...) :goodvibes

A wood burning fireplace is a must have for us. We use it all the time in winter. (almost every day) It's no bother to maintain or clean, we have never had an "infestation" (?) and I would much rather have a family room with a fireplace in it than a big screen tv.

If I was buying a house and it had everything else I wanted and was in the perfect location but had no fireplace, I would add a fireplace. (and a gas fireplace would have to be replaced with a real wood burning one)

I cannot live without one.

I have two. I never "use" the one in the living room, but it does "finish" the room. I love decorating it at Christmas; we have our tree near it.

The second fireplace is in the library, and I use it a lot in winter. I like curling up with a good book in front of it on our few cold days. It's where "Santa" finds our stockings hung with care.

The big TV, etc are in the adjacent (and much larger) family room.

Must for us - wouldn't look at any homes without one.

We lived in a rental house without them for 2.5 years and every cold night sat in our living room whining that we didn't have one. We knew then that we had to have one if at all possible.

This was our first winter in our new house and we LOVED having that fire roaring on a chilly night! And we're in TX!

I voted must have although we only use ours 3-4 times a year. I put the tv in the small extra bedroom. If you must do something as shameful as watch tv you should have to suffer through being crammed in the smallest room.:lmao: Your not going to defile my lovely livingroom with that big black box!;) :rotfl2: My poor family.
