I have a gas fireplace and hate it. Haven't used it once in the two years I've lived here. I would prefer to NOT have one in my home. The house is so much colder in the winter months because of it I think. I would think the cold air comes in from outside even with the flu, flew, floo closed. LOLOL! I've recently been looking at listings of homes, and every single one of them have a fireplace. No thanks!
Of course, I recently started seeing an interesting male. Hmmmmmm...a fireplace might be nice. LOLOLOLOL!
We have lived in our home seven years. We have used our fireplace TWO times.... and if it weren't there I could set up my home theater in the family room instead of the basement.
To me, a fireplace is warm, cozy, homey, soothing, and sometimes romantic. And it is a little bit of nature right in the living room. I even love the smell.
We have 2 and a brick pizza oven in the basement. I think fireplaces are great, but I am afraid of fire and around here wood is about as plentiful as oceanfront property in Idaho. We almost lost 2 different houses to fireplace mishaps as a child. I prefer not to use fireplaces, but we are tempted to use the pizza oven this summer. Just wish we had one outside instead.
When we were looking for the house we have now - we never had a fireplace so we could care less about one.
Then we found this house with a fireplace and we use it all the time and we love it. If we had to move - I would really prefer to find a new house with one.

Got ya beat . . . we had one for nine years and NEVER used it. Had to have the doggone thing cleaned when a raccoon climbed down the chimney and entered The Big Sleep.
really wanted one and bought a home with one...but three years later I am not crazy about the gas fireplace. We are making plans to change it to wood burning. I grew up with a wood burning and the gas fireplace is just not the same. I agree about the space and decorating issues - I would love to move ours toa corner, but that would just add even more expense.
We love our fireplace and I no longer panic if the power goes out, we can still stay warm! It does drastically cut down on our heat bills but burning wood on the weekends when we are home more.
I love fireplaces. This house has a great corner Gas one in the living room and we use it quite a bit, the new house ( God Willing) has a wonderful wood burning fireplace with a gorgeous mantel... I cant wait to use that!!
Our house has a wonder brick fireplace, but we haven't used it in over 10 years. It was nice when we used it, but I guess we could have lived without it.
When we bought our house 9 years ago, it was a *must have*. Ya know what, we've not lite it even once! In fact, we don't even have those "poker things" to start/control the fire.
