The Disney Dog Collar (MagicBand)

What is Disney bringing on itself?? Speculation on DISboards? I'd say that at this stage, that's all pretty inconsequential to Disney. This is a very specific audience here. I have a feeling that at this VERY EARLY STAGE Disney is doing ok in most people's books on this one. Not too worried about them. :)

If I was close to someone working on this project, I think I'd steer clear of these boards, and remember that MOST people aren't so critical, so early on, and with so little info. :)

I wasnt trying to stir up a debate with you on "who said what"..i sincerely apologize if it seemed that way and meant no offense or disrespect.:)

but i rarely get involved in these type of threads on these boards bc i think most of the arguments are pointless and ridiculous..but in this case, I know several people, family members and close friends, who are working their tails off, putting in so many extra hours, going through a lot stress and panic, spending less time with their families, losing a ton of sleep, all to try and create a more fun and efficient way for people to try and experience Disney. and when people get on here and criticize it prematuerly(not just on this thread but others as well), without even experiencing it to it's fullest, it pretty much ticks me off. it's almost like a food critic writing a bad review on a restaurant he/she hasn't eaten at yet, based on his own personal prediciton, without taking in consideration the hard work people put into creating it...so, im sorry that im not sorry, in this case i'm backing up Disney.

I'd rest assured that not only do most people NOT have such negative feelings about this at this stage, but that a good fraction of those who do will change their tunes after full implementation. What do I base this on? They've kept coming back every other time a change was made that didn't immediately sound to them like the best thing since sliced bread. :)

Perhaps, I should have punctuated, better.

"They're bringing it on, themselves."

Agreed -- they're feeling very little pressure from the DISBoards' rampant speculation. In fact, I'd expect they'd find it funny when the speculation is 'way off base, and eerily prescient when the speculation is right on.

now, if only someone would confirm for us which is which!!!

Coca Cola certainly found enough excited focus groups to think everyone would appreciate "New Coke too.

This initiative has a lot of pieces:

MagicBand
FP+
MyMagic+ web and apps
Data transmission and servers
RFID room locks
RFID point of sail
Park FP RFID
Etc...

Disney is pretty much rolling it all out together; and Disney marketing has tied it together.

This is like going "all in in poker." One major failure of acceptance and there is a risk it all gets branded as "new Coke".

I don't buy the analogy. Coke was a one-product brand (essentially) and they changed it. Disney has a gazillion (super technical term, obviously) products across multiple SBUs and a track record of pulling off big initiatives and introducing new products.

I trust Disney to do this better than Coke did. :)

But I guess we'll soon see... ...

It's not like we're entitled to it or anything... ;) After all, people plan their trips a year or more out, and it's hard to plan if you don't even know what the FP system will be like in 5 or 6 months down the road...

Believe me I know all about planning in advane been going to WDW 30 +
years have only been a Floridian for 5 1/2 years if you heard me 'tawk' you'd hear 'Nu Yawk'

I get the frustration I do, as a local I'll be affected too BUT I feel no nada zero zipadeedodah stress about this Not trying to be all Pollyanna here but its out of our hands for the most part oh I detest the next thing I'm going to say but kind of true, It is what it is

Yea... my first thought was 'big brother is watching' I don't think I like that!

:thumbsup2

This goes hand-in-hand with the reason every place you shop offers a shoppers card, link to your phone number, purchasing habits, where you travel, etc. Same with owning a smartphone. We are constantly being tracked.

Wasn't it only a few years ago one of the resorts got hacked and some guests cc numbers were stolen. Nothing is perfectly safe, but I think it would be rare for someone to get yor info off your band.

Bahahahaha! You have too much trust. :rotfl2: Search YouTube - look at videos that show how people's credit card numbers are stolen from a little chip on your credit card....while in your purchase or wallet on your person.

Ah, but we're promised that this chip will contain only a reference number. The system behind the scenes will contain all the actual data, in our guest records...

The major threat would be cloning the RFID id number. Don't know how the system will work when the same number shows up at two different parks simultaneously...

For park tickets, the fingerprint will prevent access. For paying via room charge, the PIN will prevent that. Are there really going to be thieves stealing RFID numbers and printing out new chips (which would have to be placed on something to fool the CMs and security watching the posts) to steal dining credits and FP+ entitlements that you don't even know what they are?

Credit Card thefts are far easier and more lucrative. Mag strip skimmer and use the card number off site/online. Or just pickpocket it, that's fairly simple too if you're good at it.

Completely agree! :thumbsup2 The problem I see here is that people are assuming that this is all doom and gloom. I have pointed out a number of really positive things that this technology would be capable of. Will they come to fruition? No one knows at this stage, but what I do know is that Disney doesn't invest this kind of money just to play guest eye spy! Too many people assume the worst and don't look or take the time to imagine what good could come out of it! Then, when someone does use a little Disney style imagination to share some ideas of the things this technology could offer in theory, it's "yeah, but I don't remember Disney saying anything about that!" Of course you don't, because Disney haven't released much of anything about this initiative YET!

Disney's bringing it all on themselves. If they'd release some information, there'd be a lot less speculation (and by extension, would reduce your stress level over some of it). It's not like we're entitled to it or anything... ;) After all, people plan their trips a year or more out, and it's hard to plan if you don't even know what the FP system will be like in 5 or 6 months down the road...

I'm sure they will release more information when they have it straightened out. I don't see anything wrong with speculation. Nothing wrong with that in my view, it's good to exercise your imagination and consider what this all could mean for the guests in future. What I get irked about is people complaining and scaremongering.

This whole debate about being traceable is a fine example of that. How many of the people who are determined "not to share" data and be "tracked" have cell phones? Don't you think that you're being tracked already? Most of them these days have GPS in them, but you're worried about Disney knowing when you eat a Turkey Leg or Cinderella knowing your kids name?

We all need to be patient and consider the positive things that could come from Next Gen. It's not like Disney hasn't rolled out new initiatives before, they know what they're doing. I agree that it is frustrating but that doesn't mean we need to jump to conclusions and make assumptions. All of us that have trips booked are in the same boat. Let's all wait and see, without assuming that Disney are in it for themselves!

This may have been asked already (and if it has, I sincerely apologise!!!), but I assume these will be totally waterproof, so that you can keep them on your person in the waterparks, swimming pools etc. Right?

Correct

Digging the passes out of my pocket for admittance or during PM EMH is kind of a pain in the butt, so I think the bracelets could be a good idea. As long as they fit somewhat loosely around the wrist and credit card info is not on them I'm good with it. I was thinking you could always just snap it on a belt loop if you didn't want to wear it.
