The DIS secret handshake - Bad Idea!

Hi everyone! After a post about how LisaInNC was scammed by a fellow DISer during a trade a few of us "good" DISers got to thinking about a way to prevent this from happening. How can you feel confident that you are trading with a trustworthy DISer? Since there are so many new members here on the VMK board it is difficult to know when so many players have DIS in their signature.

Iluvcountry had the idea to have a secret "DIS Handshake". After consulting with BriarRosie, I think we have a come up with a good system that might actually work!

Our idea is this:

-There is a secret password that only a true DISer would know.

-They would know this secret password by being PMed by another DISer.

-You are only to pass this along to DISers you know to be trustworthy.

-The password is used in the trade chat box only so that no one else in the
room can access it.

-If the trader does not know the password, you refuse the trade immediately.

-If the trader says he or she forgot the password, refer them back to their PM to retrieve it. Do not share it on VMK!!!!!

Now, I am not sure of the best way to pass this around other than that you can share it with someone you are friends with. It is likely that you will get numerous PM's with the secret password at first from friends and aquantances.

So, that being said, I am going to start it by sending the "DIS Secret Handshake" to a few friends.

Yes, I believe that should cover it. The only problem I foresee is
that "new" posters to the DIS will want the password, but I'm not sure if
they'll be like Flowergal or if they'd be completely trustworthy.

I think that if you've been a member of the DIS prior to VMK beta, it's
probably a fairly safe bet to share the password.

I'd also share the password with people who've been praised on the "good
deeds" thread for sure.

At the moment, only Buzzfanmom and I know the password "secret handshake", so I'll respond to PMs with the password if I "know" you.

You can PM me or BriarRosie for it, but if we don't know you or know that you are trustworthy than we won't be giving it you

sister of mine, good idea. just watch out for ******** who report you for "harrassing" them when you say, "no i wont trade my teleportation pin!" five minutes later, i get a message "sexually harrassing other ppl is not with VMK values. dont say stuff like i want to do u" something like that. one of the reasons why i left VMK

hey jenn(that's buzzfanmom, not the person im quoting), on the dis boards, ppl you no you can trust should be im'ed the password. im not trying to leave anyone behind, but it just a thought. if i come up with a better idea or get the answer in a dream ( ), ill edit this.

For example, say I am scammer; I see on Dis that there is a "secret password". I use this to my advantage in trading, by asking for the secret password in the trade window. This would be a way to "scam" the password, thus necessitating a new password.

I see what you are saying. I guess if you don't think you can trust them then you can ask them to say it first. Hmm, I might have to think this one over a bit.

Okay I know the concern over scammers. However, considering that VMK is STILL geared to the children, I find the idea of "secret handshakes" a bit exclusionary; especially for newer players.

Perhaps what is needed is a "third party" trade such as are used in real pin trading when the two principles don't know each other. We already have the thread set up for "mule trading". Why not extend it a step further so that there are several volunteers who can serve as a go between in these trades.

Seeing as how I'm kind of new, I don't now if I'll be receiving the password or not. But regardless of that, I do have a question and a suggestion regarding the scamming.

My question is "Is the password only for doing a trade with someone who has DIS in their signature? " I'm assuming so, because someone who isn't on DIS wouldn't know what you're talking about.

As for the scammers, I think the best solution would be to make it a two part password, where the person initiating the trade has to say part one of the password first, which must be followed by the correct response (part 2) from the other party.

It would probably best if the two parts are completely unrelated, so as to prevent someone from "accidentally" stumbling on to one of the parts.

Part 1 could be something like "Under pants are over rated." and part 2 could be "But the football likes to eat.", or something like that. I'm sure someone else could come up with better phrases.

Anyway, just a thought.

It absolutely is exclusionary. It's meant to exclude dishonest players who would try to scam you. I know the VMK is geared toward children but I don't want to trade with them. There are many parents on the VMK who do not allow thier children to trade unless they are in the room with them. I am one of those parents as well. Most of the people I talk to on VMK are grownups that I know through the DIS except for a few kids who are in my family. I don't want to sound like a jerk and please excuse me if I do. I don't want to be part of the kid side of VMK with boyfriends and girlfriends, pets, armies.

Bev- your idea about the third party is great too. We just thought this might be a little easier. I am willing to consider anything that would prevent players from getting scammed.
